Reliving the happy moments and clinging to them gives us positivity and strength, hope in tough times. After the clouds, there is always sunshine.... likewise clouds of suffering and distress are only temporary, but sunshine of joy and happiness is our eternal nature (of our soul), and can be cultivated within, in our heart, mind and soul, regardless of external circumstances, by removing the dark clouds of ego which pollutes our mind (and eclipses the natural light and happiness of our soul); removing the dark clouds of negativity, ignorance, resentment within our minds-- and patiently /stoically, steadfastly waiting for the sun to come out from the clouds and change our external life.

    1. Do only the essentials, speak only when required
    2. Regular meditation will help us to keep a queit mind.
Also, We should fully embrace the following facts:
    - our thoughts decides our inner peace, irrespective of what happens in the external .
    - every things comes to an end, nothing is permanent, that is how the nature has designed itself .
    3. Memento Mori :
Life will come to an end, so will the good times, the bad times, the pleasures, the pains...
Nothing is permanent, and we should not cling to a feeling or a situation.
We should focus on moving ahead with life and practice resilience.

Marcus understood the transient nature of our lives. That helps deciding what is really worth getting worked up about. I tell my subscribers that a way to stay calm is to avoid triggers. And I am someone who battled anger for decades. There are also daily things you can do. Physical fitness is key because that unwinds the mind as well as the fitness part. Then I add a "Mind Workout." Fifteen minutes when I come home from the gym. It can be yoga, tai chi or whatever meditative art suits you. On top of which I add habits that take no time at all. Slowing your breathing when talking to someone who is starting to aggravate you. Avoiding media that amps you up--including some music if that does it for you. But you practice this daily and soon you will develop a new neuro program in your wiring and calmness will become a part of you. Hope that helps---Charles

    • @jamessalvatore7054

      It sounds good on paper.
But our human evolution is founded in caring and trying.
If not for people disregarding this refusal for obsession Lord knows what in the world we'd be missing.
There are lessons to mind like balance and harmony. But there is a thin line between not taking things seriously and borderline apathy.
Stoicism and passion don't see eye to eye.
Maybe it's not for everyone. But I view it as critically flawed in that regard.
For just as pushing and trying has cons... So does it have pros. And we'd simply get nowhere if we didn't sometimes really try no matter the philosophical stance of "not trying. Go with the flow"
The world doesn't always allow that.

Priscilla Jimenez Many people I know use vacations as a time to finally relax and escape the daily grind. Unfortunately that may only be a few times a year. So if you’re relying on vacations as a time to have peace, that doesn’t leave you with much. Exploring the world as you’re saying is great. However, running from your daily stresses by traveling isn’t a good solution.

We should focus on moving ahead in life. Not looking back, but learning from it for sure. Our memory of the past (sadness) and imagination of the future (worries) keep us from enjoying the present. We should leave the past in the past and leave the future to unravel, it can be magically beautiful. We should work in the present. Tomorrow will take care of itself if we work for today. And this is never taught in schools but the greatest purpose of life is to have fun and enjoy and help others and love ourselves and others a lot. So let's do that in the present moment. Let's live now and relinquish the fear of the future beginning now.

Saumya, Life and people will never happen exactly the way you want. There is nothing like a perfect job, boss, friend, life partner etc--In fact some people are angry even with God. To reduce overthinking bne careful what you feed your mind. Avoid comparing yourself with others, avoid storing bottled up emotions, reduce watching negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress and overthinking. For a relaxed mind observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils and within the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. You can sit on a chair or lay down anywhere, be as still as possible, eyes closed but no deep breathing. Don’t fight your thoughts. Make it a lifetime habit to observe your breath before sleep, when travelling, when reading, at the workplace etc, if needed even with eyes open. Best wishes--Counsellor.

Marcus Aurelius was actually an opium addict, as we know from the records of his personal doctor Gallen. He took opium twice a day. Being rich and numbed by an opiod makes it easier to be calm and tranquil and explore the inner world without traveling ... So that's something you should keep in mind, because his advice and ideals are great, but hard to implement for a sober human being

Good point. The way I see it, to truly be a Stoic, everything else in life has to be in check/balance. If you are a rich and powerful dude, then of course practicing Stoicism is going to be easy. If you are poor and miserable, the last thing you are thinking about is "keeping your mind calm" as you struggling to find your next paycheck. It's an excellent philosophy though.

I really need this rn, thank you. I don't like to talk about my story but yesterday, I had a nervous breakdown at my classroom and no one even bothered to comfort me. I started crying randomly. I did think however that I caused a bit of a scene before crying, but after I cried for an hour, they just went to me as if nothing happened at all. When I saw that, after school, I began to weep again, because of it.
I was so stressed and pressured of school work since I'm failing one of my subjects and I need to think, but because of their constant noise, I began snapped and threw my phone across the room to shut them up.
I don't like what I did, and, if ever, I don't even want to do that again. I failed from being stoic around my environment. Because of it, I need to start all over again about stoicism.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear you had a bad day. But don't put pressure on yourself over stoicism, one cannot absolutely achieve or fail at being stoic, it is a daily quest along a road to peace. Sometimes you make it all the way, other days you fall into the ditch a few metres along. Perhaps today you were less stoic but tomorrow you will be more stoic!

    • @stinkmonger
      @stinkmonger 4 года назад +3

Actually in a way, having a moment of emotion in public isn't a fail at being a stoic. In fact, ancient stoics highly endorsed doing something in public that is normally seen as taboo, as a way of training you to not care what others think. Allowing yourself to be emotionally vulnerable in public (as long as its rare) is a good thing. Also, stoics acknowledge that humans are emotional and that total control isn't realistic. Even Seneca basically said that stoicism is like a bandage, and that putting a bandage on a wound too early can do more harm than good. So in short, as long as you are working to master your emotions it is okay to sometimes lose control. You're only human, after all.

Tâm an sinh vui.

Then why didn’t any of this God’s disciples or his son himself speak in such wisdom after their presence on this planet? (centuries after Epicurus lived) Why would a “complete” and sufficient religion like yours need to claim my own culture’s and religion’s wisdom as its’ own? The Hellenic ideas and wisdom are for all of humanity but not to be claimed as their own product! Keep Abraham and all the saints and leave Epicurus to Hellenism.

Thank you.

Traveling to find peace is definitely a waste of time. I think our greatest goal should be to actually be on a "vacation" inside our minds all the time rather than traveling two weeks out of the year to what is basically an escape from life. It's amazing how much time we spend escaping and recovering from our own lives when it shouldn't be necessary.

What doing less to me would translate that if i do more or beyond expectations, i would have a tendency to expect the same output from my peers, and that will get me riled up to know that my peers did not "meet my internal expectations" so i guess this doing less might help. Do less and expect less. Thank you for this video and explaining.
