For the longest time, I thought the line was “I left some rains down in Africa”...had no idea what that meant. My other big misread of lyrics was what I thought was “rises like a leopardess above the Serengeti”. Actually, I like my lyric batter 😀
I'm 56 years old, so I've been listening to music for a while now. Honestly, I think that this is my favorite song of all time. I don't know why I love it so much. It just sounds so dang cool. The music along with the harmony of the voices gives me chills to this day, at a point in my life when I don't get near as many "chills" as I used to. Something about this song makes me feel adventurous and brave.
This group is a "supergroup". They are actually a collection of "session musicians" who, not only played a lot of the best music you heard in MANY hit songs, but they ALSO got together in this group and put out their own string of hit music. They really had a head start on most groups out there, so their catalog is pretty deep and the music is top notch.

We'd play this song as we looked over the Los Angeles landscape, from the mountains to the sea, and planned our trip to Africa. He is considered by many, many of the greatest musicians, critics and fans as one of the finest and most talented drummers to ever sit behind the kit. Yes this song is a journey. Close your eyes take in the vibe and go on a melodic adventure every time. The arrangement of low register, high register vocals and backing vocals is spot on and the blend of instruments, notes, time signature and meter are off the charts. I love it every time Bobby Kimball comes in with "Gonna take a lot to drag me away from you. There's nothing that a million men ever do. I blessed the rains down I Africa. Gonna takes some to...." then when he cranks out the even higher "I blessed the rains" note during the instrumental solo.
Simon and Garfunkel did perhaps the most beautiful and timely song ever, "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Paul Simon went on to eventually make "Graceland", his ode to Africa and the their beat, with Paul's impeccable songwriting, makes for a MUST HEAR for you! You would simply love it!. I love the fact that you are noticing the drums, different types. Lots of percussion in that song! The stage set of the song showed the band standing on a large stack of books and the video was set in a library in the jungle.
there is a great video on youtube if you can find it about each individual instrumental track solo and when you hear each instrument independent of the others, your brain somehow magically fills the rest of it in and you can somehow hear the entire song in your head. its a pretty good testament to the musicianship of the band.
I'm autistic and due to auditory processing issues, this is how I hear songs until I listen to it a thousand times and make my brain "assemble it" in completion instead of hearing only one instrument, then one voice etc. This song is one that results in sensory overload and causes me to cry as a result due to it's "complexity" but it's actually tears of joy. I tried to explain it as best as I could given my struggle to find words, but I thought I would post this here because this is the first time in my 37 years of life that anyone has inadvertantly explained part of my autism that I struggle to😂 I'm going to track down the individual intrumental tracks and my apologies for interrupting your comment. Your video got me a flashback to a computer game I played years ago... It's called "Firewatch". A man serves as a firewatcher. He's alone in the middle of nowhere, sitting in a firetower, watching the woods for signs of smoke and fire. Once he's on a trip, watching for signs of a kid, missed years ago. He finds a cave, enters it, goes deep inside... Then he reaches a very big cavern... In total silence, suddenly the charakter sings as loud as hell: "I BLESS THE RAINS DOWN IN AAAAAFRICAAAAA..." and an amazing echo comes back!!! It was so much fun and took me by a BIG surprise!!! Watching your video I remembered this scene and had a lot of fun again! :o)

If you like this version, you should check out an acapella choir called Perpetual Jazzile, that uses a beat box rhythm. The choir is an Eastern European (Romania I believe) and very much worth listening to!

If you like this version, you should check out an acapella choir called Perpetual Jazzile, that uses a beat box rhythm. The choir is an Eastern European (Romania I believe) and very much worth listening to!

BTW, Perpetuum Jazzile is from Slovenia. Their a capella version of “Africa” (complete with simulated jungle rainstorm) was posted to RUclips in 2009 and has gotten MILLIONS of hits.
They still put on a great show!! I have seen them a few times in the last ten years or so.
If you like african music try "Osibisa" Sunshine Day, "The Dawn" and lots more. Great band from the 70's onwards.
My dad was never into pop music. He was born in 1940 and somehow skipped right past Elvis and the Beatles. But I remember him really loving this song!

If I'm in a "less good mood" I play the songs of Toto, and they make every time my day. These are all studio artists, and there is no tuning involved in their layers of voices. Amazing group and feel of their songs. And the songs never age. That's why Steve Porcaro started very early playing synths, Steve Luke on the guitar, one of the best guitar players like David Gilmore, Jeff Porcaro the brother of Steve with his amazing drum grooves, and Bobby Kindall with his hi pitch voice. David Hungate on the bass and the lead singer, on this song, David Paige.
