Avoid Bad Days In BJJ (Don't Set Expectations)

  • Do you have bad days on when you train BJJ? Of course you do. We all do.
But something that is important to remember is not to beat yourself up over it when you do. Also, try and avoid the mistake of setting your expectations to high every time you roll
We’ve had an influx of new students coming into the gym to train BJJ, which is a good thing. But now they’re all getting to this point where they are getting good enough that they are having some success which is leading to a negative thought process.
Since they have broken the seal and realized that they can actually hit their techniques during rolling. Many of my newer students have begun to set expectations for themselves.
When they first started training they were just like the rest of us. Happy to be on the mats, expecting not to be successful because they were so new. But not as they’ve become accustomed to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu they think that they are supposed to perform at a certain level.
This mindset is dangerous. First off, you have to remember that your training partners in BJJ are working hard too and they will adjust with you. This is the beauty of having consistent training partners. You build one another up, together. Like the old saying, “iron sharpens iron.” Right?
Second, and most important in my opinion. You’re going to limit yourself because of fear. If you’re solely fixated on winning and beating your partner then you will be forced to play your “A” game all the time. This takes away the ability to experiment with new positions of areas you’re unfamiliar. This will limit your growth and hinder you’re ability to be the best BJJ practitioners that you can be.
So don’t make these mistakes that I did and that so many BJJ practitioners make.
    Thanks guys!

I definitely feel this. One week I'll be doing great, submitting most of my teammates, defending great against my higher ranked opponents but then the next week I struggle. I get maybe 1 sub and get picked apart by all of my more experienced teammates. It's definitely a roller coaster. The one thing I always focus on is just GOING. Even on the days that you don't want to train THOSE are the days to go and work your hardest.

Really needed this today. Last week I felt unstoppable. Sweeping, subbing and controlling everyone and it felt effortless. This week I feel like a clumsy white belt. Everything was exhausting and disorienting. No coordination whatsoever. I legitimately feel like a different person. Hoping I'll find my mojo again next week

Definitely needed to hear this advice - had such a bad day today... Been doing it for 4 months so still very new. Normally I'd at least stalemate in guard or maintain top position for a whole round but today I got subbed so many times to some of the dumbest moves... Guess I gotta keep pressing forward though! Thanks Chewie!

Thank you for sharing the psychology behind some of the inner stumbling blocks when practicing bjj. I am a white belt and a therapist and I constantly catch myself experiencing those same emotions and display that same behavior when things don't go as I would like them to go. To me, this is gold because I get a frequent chance to examine my automatic thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

+Mike Carinum I'm sure as a therapist you probably look at the emotions and feelings you have differently than the average person. I'm glad the video helped and made sense.

I just got back from training. This has been my week, but today, I was like, 'meh, these guys are my friends. Who cares if I lose all the time?' and then I lasted 7 rounds, a record for me (47 year-old white belt, two months in). I might have even gotten a tap in there, but such a blur now...

This is a thing which actually has happened to me the previous week. After the things I've learned here, I realized that people train as well as I do. I should build, instead of just waiting them or just try beat them because I do not like losing. Thank you! : )

sage advice my friend. I think this especially applies in the beginning, white belt should be a humbling experience that causes you to search for advice and train.

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  8 лет назад

It absolutely applies to the beginning. So many new practitioners lack the ability to be humbled and continue their training.

I just want to say your videos really help me when I'm feeling down about jiu jitsu. I had a question, sometimes I feel like my coach might be holding off on promoting me to win competitions . I'm not totally sure but I'm a white belt and I find myself beating blue belts pretty consistently. Do you think this puts me at an advantage for not getting promoted as easily? Or do you think that people getting promoted a little easier waters down the meaning of the promotion. I know belts don't matter, but it does feel good to be praised. I still love my gym though, hope no one takes this the wrong way lol.

I try to look at it objectively, if I get caught I get caught, simple! Like anything it's good to view your progress over the long run, we all have up's and down's. Keep training!!

I'm sort of in the midst of this as a new white belt (4 mos). I'm mostly a choking dummy at this stage but still have some unrealistic implicit expectations. This post helped externalize what's happening. Thank you

Excellent! I'm glad it helped you brother. I remember being the choking dummy for my first 6 months on the mat back in 2003. So I feel your pain. I'm happy the video was useful to you.

@H i 3 rd week in on a long journey! It sounds like you have a great attitude. My advice would be to not be so attached to outcomes at this point. In guard pass learn how to build the fundamental skills that will allow you to become effective at one pass. For example, the samurai pass in closed guard. Learn how to maintain posture deeper into the engagement, remember to not let your trailing leg to be trapped in half guard and so on. Generally, as a new white belt one might expect to be swept and submitted. So manage your expectations. Set up your outlook to learn. Again, don't be attached to outcomes. If you train consistently, remain humble, teachable and keep a healthy perspective you will see results. The best skills to learn as a white belt are to keep safe, and work on escapes. Submissions, sweeps and so on will come in time.

In my class, I have 50-year-old recent blue belt who does not like to guide the basics, does not like to discuss on any questions, curses a lot, randomly says to shut up to lower belts or newbies and unfortunately, the instructors at my school are Brazilians and they do not understand English. It just makes me feel sick when I go to class. I do not know If I should I stop going to the class and work at the home gym, because of me being vocal and trying to correct him made things even worst and I keep getting verbal attacked and bullied, I initially thought BJJ is a great sport BUT lately started to realize it is just creating a negative energy, I am a contractor, I work with military and best folks in IT, I also do auditing for instructors on various aspects from technical to non-technical, combat sports is my passion and always has been. I do not want to go back to my old mud dog days of back and forth silly arguments or getting personal/physical. ATM I am completely avoiding him and basically, he is non-existent to keep my focus and positivity, appreciate if anyone has a better way for me to deal with this type of situation. REMEMBER I am 33 years old looking for wise advice.

Thanks Chewy, I figured that you had a video on this and specifically sought it out. I believed that I had a successful week of practice last week, but this week I felt like I got beat up on and left the gym frustrated with myself, thinking that I took a step backwards. This was so helpful to watch, thanks again!

Fuck bro. I feel this on another level, I started developing a game around the kimura.. and when people caught on I felt like all my other “go to’s” were gone.. I went against a buddy who trains only Muay Thai today. His first official roll, and I couldn’t darce him or guillitine him. (He tucked tight and shrugged shoulders) the reason this is discouraging, is considering my experience on the mat and his inexperience I felt like I should’ve been able to tap him WITHOUT that much effort. He was 1000% defensive and I was 50% offensive... should I have turned it up? Because now I feel like the smooth technicality I brought got shut down. Idk bro i was kinda surprised and disappointed in my self..
