It's really cool that you actually recognize when you have had people email you from a few years ago. One of the reasons people like your videos is that you talk to people in a very humble manner rather than you know everything. Yet, your experience really does help.
I stopped drinking quickly after I started bjj. I was not a heavy drinker at all but I quickly noticed that even a beer or two during the weekend made training on mondays much harder.
I started exercising regularly a few years ago and noticed how much worse I felt if I even had 1 drink the previous couple of days. The main thing that bothers me is that as a younger adult I would drink a lot as a way of having “fun” on the weekends but I never really enjoyed it. Now later in life I realized that the high I get from exercise is actually fun and what I had been searching for all those years. Wasted all that time and it had who knows what effects on my body. I noticed I lost mental sharpness during that time that I have never regained. I started bjj a few months ago and it has been a awful and great all at the same time. Wish I would have learned all of these lessons earlier or listened to older wiser people.
As a dad, it’s super hard for me to go as often as I’d like, especially in contiguous blocks of days. So I can often only go twice a week, and they’re split up. That makes muscle memory that much harder, and progress that much slower. As a result, some childless 20-something joins the gym and starts training 5+ days / week, and within a few months they’re beating me. I understand that my journey is my own and nobody else’s but it’s often hard to suppress the frustration at how slow my progress is. It’s a little ego death every time I go, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but is often discouraging.
Been having a lot of bad days lately. And no it isn’t my blue belt blues. My coach likes to do multiple hard session long rounds. Which is awesome, love it. I’ll get smashed for a total of 20 minutes and at the end I’m so exhausted, my body feels like it’s dying and my brain is scattering. Here’s where the bad starts. My brain scatters, and all the negativity in my life comes forefront. I’m rolling, losing or winning I still feel like I’m losing. I walk out the door feeling not so sure about anything. BJJ, myself, Confidence issues come up. and at that point of exhaustion I break down at the breeze of the wind. I hate it. I know this is a slump and I know I’ll get out of it. But it’s still tough. Thanks for the video chewy.
Yes, to all of that! Also, any time I've had a white belt take advantage of my bad days, I always use that opportunity to help boost their ego and compliment the specifics about what they were able to take advantage of without acting like I'm having a bad day. Do this especially with those you like rolling with. Definitely want to make those people feel good about training and continue coming in. Seen too many white belts not continue.
The most powerful thing I ever did was begin eating healthy all the time. After experiencing it myself I have to wonder how much of the world's mental health problems could be at minimum significantly improved with a healthy diet.
You’d be surprised. Not only is there plenty professional research on it; people in my family have done considerable research of their own on this subject.
As a new BJJ student who's training daily (but a decade of Judo prior), my bad days are still everyday. My Judo skills don't seem to be transferring which is getting more aggravating !
Keep at it. I believe that any day of training is a good day. But I also train to improve, not to win, so every scenario is a learning experience. As for your Judo, I feel that since Judo is primarily standing based it does not apply well to the ground aspect. BJJ players move different than Judokan and wrestlers.
Work the judo skills that translate well, such as sacrifice throws and things like yoko wakare or tomoe nagae, these are effectively fake guard pulls and most people will set their weight into you thinking you are pulling guard, as for the ground techniques, just keep coming, they are two different martial arts but you can take the aspects from each that work with the other and apply them
Thanks for the video and advice. I am a blue belt who has been training for about 3 and half years but recently haven’t been training much due to injuries, and moving to places with no gym. But recently started to get back into it at a new gym and the first day there I had a really good day, but then I got really sick and wasn’t sleeping at all and I went back tonight and such a bad day there. Was getting beat by people i should have been better than. My gas tank was abysmal and I pretty much gassed in my first roll and so that sucked to where I felt I couldnt really train well cause i had no breath or energy it was not a good day. reasons as to why was the sickness, lack of consistent training, and my ego being inflated, even though i haven’t been training. I was feeling pretty down and still am but I hope to go in the next day realizing that this was a bad day and i have had bad days before and they will happen again, but I hope to manage them better and be more humble about it. Turn these experiences as learning lessons and not to dwell on it too much. Anyways this comment is long enough and thanks again for the video.
1 year white belt thanks again for the constant feedback. It really put ego in check and bad days are just learning lessons. if I can accept the defeat as a learning experience. Its a win.
I am 38 years old and just started BJJ Oct 21 of last year, 2022. I am getting great feedback from my classmates on what I am taking in each class as I roll. Overall they have said I am goin in the right direction and have excellent instincts as well as my breathing which I had a hard time with in the beginning. Yesterday however, I decided to order out 3 hours before class; a Fish Sandwich and some fries on the side. Now, I haven't had fried food in 6 months ever since I changed my eating habits. I noticed it was due to allergic reactions and I would have bad inflammation in my lower back and was 40lbs heavier than now. Went to class and I was DYING!!!! Food is number one on my list! So yes! I was asking myself that same question of What Went Wrong! Thankyou for this video!!! ...not sure why I had the cravings for fried food.
BJJ reminds a bit of body building, its never enough and there is always some one bigger younger and better then you, its also high lt addictive :))) i you work or create and do BJJ on the side, there should be no bad days., its just days at the gym, they all more or less hard as you already winning in life and managed to come to train., if you do tho live BJJ - its a good day if you Healthy and injury free.
as a bjj beginner i can say good days are when the better ones are in a good mood and let me work bad days are when they want to kill me. It has nothing to do with me 😂
Keep in mind also that we don't live in vacuum--the people around us will have an effect on our days, and sometimes it's alright to have a rough day/week/month if you're going through some stuff with/for a loved one.
I'm only 3 months in, but here I am, binging bjj videos with a cold, eager to get back on the matt so that I can work on guard retention and positional dominance / control

Hey Chewy, Could you make a video about techniques that are so odd or cheap they could be called 'meme moves'? I only know about the dummy sweep in regards to meme technique
Hey I've got a 'Bob' question? I think it's a good one too. (I've been watching for years and haven't seen this come up..) Can I get pointed in the right direction to ask this question?
Great advice - I used to eat too little or too much before class - really affected me - now I try to eat just a banana 🍌 about an hour before class - I saw Rickson do this between fights in Japan. 😜
@@communicationcandy1707 no how it is groomed. One side connects the the goatee area higher than the other side. I noticed it because I mess up and do that sometimes too lol
A good day is showing up to training, working hard and not getting injured.

Thanks Paul, this is the good shit that keeps me showing up

Good day: you showed up and training.
Bad day: you choose to not go train and stay at home

I still drink on the weekends but I basically don't drink at all during the week, completely for BJJ.
I noticed this as well, i decided to start drinking more regularly
