Cautionary Tale Of Talking During Rolling In BJJ

  • In this video I share a cautionary tale about talking during rolling from when I was a BJJ White Belt. I share the story from my Brazilian Jiujitsu training because I received a question about talking during rolling. I know this will not be the most groundbreaking question and answer video I've ever done, but I do have a fun story to share with it and I hope you enjoy the video.
When it comes to talking during Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, it's going to happen. Part of the reason why so many of us stick to Jiu-jitsu is the bonding that happens on the mat. We are in a place where we train and exercises. But it's also a place where we get to know each other in person, not digitally, and become friends.
I know that one of the reason I've continued to train for so long is 100% the community of people inside the gym.
With that said, ever gym is different. In my gym we talk shit to each other constantly in a fun and laughing way. Some gyms don't do this. So ultimately look to the leaders of your gym to figure out what is acceptable.
But I hope you find the story entertaining and enjoy the video. And if you have a question about talking during BJJ training then I hope it's useful to you!
    Thanks for watching!

My talking during a roll consists of “shit” “fuck” “noooo” and giggling like Johnny Knoxville when I’m in danger. All followed by “Thanks man” and a hand shake.

Not just saying something funny either, for example Chewie mentioned shit talking with his training partner. It was evident that the two of them are okay with the smack talk, but if your partner isn't, then you shouldn't engage in that type of thing while training in your gym. In competition, that's a whole other discussion (though I personally don't like it there either because I find it unsportsmanlike).

In my gym, a moderate amount of chatter is pretty standard. Only once did a newer student announce to our instructor she "tapped everyone in class." They were politely told such talk is taboo and they apologized. Sometimes it's a lack of self awareness. Most of the time the chat is after a roll, a brief "that was a nice sweep/ you really caught me w/ that sub." Respectful, no ego. Other times it's more like, "can you show me how you did that/ what can I do from that position?" Genuine, trying to learn from the roll. Personally, I talk. And this video won't change that. When I roll with lower belts, I let them know at the start they can work what they like, I'm not here to smash them. I let them advance according to their skill level. I will help them through positions and submissions, likewise. With anyone "on my level" I'm generally silent during the roll and will complement/thank them afterward. I legit have to focus and this is time for me to improve on myself. Also, I'm 36 and usually need to conserve my energy for these rolls. When I roll with brown and black belts, again, I'm focusing and trying to conserve energy. Occasionally, if anything, a light hearted, self depricating, "oh no!" or "this isn't good." will slip out. Sometimes when I'm really getting smashed I'll ask coach why he's doing this to me, I thought we were friends.. Of course, I know why he does it. Hell, I'm paying good money for it. 😂🤣😂

I'll usually say something like "Dont give up!" and "Keep working it!". I do this for 2 reasons, 1: if I'm defending it, I dont want them to stop believing in the sub. 2: I like to work my escapes and see if during live rolling if I can get out of a almost or sunk in sub.

I only get a few hours of the week with these guys, and I give a crap about them, and I sure as heck am not going to be talking when our teacher is, so rolling is the best time to talk. But usually when I talk, I am asking my partner how work was while he is sinking in an arm bar.

I am SO that guy, but not in like a mean-spirited way. I just like compliment people on a move I didn't see coming, mention something that happened last roll, whatever. Even when I'm going pretty hard, I just don't feel any mental or emotional pressure, so as long as I'm not out of breath, I'm just like hanging out with a friend while fighting them. It's odd because it's the opposite when I used to do striking stuff. I was completely silent start to finish.

Great video. Actually very refreshing to hear. At my gym we tend to talk, and I have always preferred some sort of talking during a roll. Usually if somebody submits me kind of saying that was awesome. That’s about the extent of it though. And yeah, never talk Someone threw moves when they’re beating you. It’s an obvious face saving thing. For my part, whenever I am rolling with somebody it is out of fellowship so a secret part of me is rooting for them, and the other part of me that has that fellowship with them also knows that they deserve nothing less than my best. So if they got a submission on me then not only did they earn it but it was awesome and I am proud of them for it. But I’m gonna try my best too

Then the higher belts I train with regularly look over laughing saying he is a white belt lol Then they go roll with that guy and leg lock him 😂 Most guys are pretty cool about it though. Only been training 8 months so lots to learn. Probably doesn’t help that 3 of those months I focused on mma instead. Signed up for a tournament coming up so focusing on just bjj for now. Then back to mma. It’s more fun when someone is in your guard and you can hammer fist them in the head while trapping one of their arms and cutting the angle for arm lock. Bjj is easy compared to mma training lol Still fun though I enjoy it.

The client manager in me understands that all information is good, and the 37-year-old in me understands that it doesn't diminish my ability. I used to train with a brown belt that was maybe a blue belt at best. He talked me through every submission I ever put him through. Finally I got to the point where I would crank the submission in the middle of him talking. People pulled me aside and told me that he was doing it to everyone including the higher belts. The professor had to tell him to quit teaching everyone mid roll. One time he freaked out during a sweep I hit him with, screamed it was illegal, went to the workout section of the school and started throwing the dumbbell weights around... Not kidding. Also, I'm not bragging... I'm nothing special. I get smoked all the time. He just wasn't a real brown belt and was insecure about it.

I knew a teenager that would try to start such deep conversations it took you away from rolling. Wether he was winning or losing he was constantly saying stuff to try to get you sucked into a conversation. A lot of white belts that rolled with him would get so distracted they were barely even rolling. I just wouldn't say anything when I rolled with him. He was also a white belt, he wasnt even bad he put up a pretty good fight most of the time for how new he was but idk man.

We talk more after the fact. Like if I slipped a triangle or armbar, we'll wait for the round to finish and then critique each other positively. Never has it been a negative experience for me.
But it's worth noting too, I'm a lower belt and upper belts will help me finish all the time. "Hey adjust this" or "dont forget your hook" or whatever. It never comes across to me as them talking themselves out of a loss, more that they're helping me get better at my game. There's hardly a better learning opportunity than live rolling and finding yourself in an organic position to say "hey, this is where you need to get that hook in". Maybe it's just a rapport thing? But I'd have never thought I was doing someone a disservice helping them finish a choke so thank you for sharing that. I'll be mindful in the future if I find myself doing that and someone is getting upset.

At my gym we do the 'talking through it' thing a lot of the time. It isn't seen the way you described, as in talking our way out of a loss. Higher tier belts just wanna help you catch up sometimes, man. The reality is our blue belts can submit the white belts 9/10 times anyway so that one consolation win doesn't really matter as much as learning it right. That being said I know you described an open mat situation, and those are definitely more competitive from what I've found.

In my gym the teachers always encourage us to talk while we're rolling, they say that if you can not hold a conversation comfortably then we are rolling too hard to learn the techniques well and we should calm down a bit. They gave us the advice that if your opponent is going too hard on you (not just submitting you, but rather being a bit reckless) you could just throw a question at him , to force him to slow down a and answer it.

My instructor makes small talk with us while we're rolling with each other. During my third class ever I was getting smashed and the instructor asked me from across the room, "hey Billy, do you know the name of that meteor shower tonight?"... I thought he was testing me to see if I could be distracted, so I ignored him. He kept asking me, "hey Billy... You ignoring me?"
"I'm fighting for my life here!"
      ...
Other times help put us in a mock match with real stakes, and then he cracks jokes the whole time and we're trying to fight each other laughing.

My second roll ever was with this one blue belt guy in the gym. he kept saying mad weird shit in my ear and he got to my back but I was defending the choke so he gave me a nuggy. I really didnt know or talk to this guy like that but I had about 3 months of wrestling experience so I knew basic concepts. I got a reversal and got to his back and gave him a nuggy and proceeded to constantly pressure him but he just curled up into a ball and didnt even try to get back on top.

@@Ezio9791 Its when somebody aggressively rubs their knuckles on the top of your head. The stereotypical bully move lol. I'm sure he was doing it in a joking manner but it still felt good letting him know that I could "bully" him right back.

@@Yerr_ItsNick Oh yeah that's a dick move because it can really hurt if they do it hard but it's still like "hahaha i'm just messing with you man xDDD"

Yes it is cool when amongst friends or just keeping it I. A culturally playful school. But things like “whoops” or “oh oh” I don’t like. I’ll take that as a tap. Or like you said they start coaching as you turn the tide. Great post as always.

I am one of the biggest guys in my school and I'm a blue belt, so I normally go a little lighter on the white belts. I have a decent amount of knowledge to know when I'm in trouble or something like that so I defend well. There will be times where I will kind of give them a favorable position to see what they will do and many times they don't take it and usually end up with a bunch of nothing on their end. Now I know how to escape or sweep, but I normally coach them through an option they didn't realize was there. It won't be some amazing rarely seen before technique. It's just that them being inexperienced didn't realize the capabilities from that position. So after I show them I say "Ok, lets go back to that position, but do it for real this time." At that point I'm in a bit more trouble now, but I am decent at defending. I see the smile on their face and that makes me happy because they walked away with something. A few times I got to see the fruits of their labor when they tried the same thing on someone else and I'm in the corner with the Pai Mei beard stroke. Should I stop? Or should I go through the roll and maybe take the time after to show them something?
