At some point almost all Brazilian Jiu Jitsu students say “I’m training more, but my BJJ is getting worse! Why?!” In this video I explain why this happens, and why you should embrace that feeling! It happens to BJJ white belts, blue belts, purple, belts, brown belts, and yes, even black belts!
I believe skill acquisition and progression in Jiu Jitsu follows four levels in a cyclical nature:
    1) You become unconsciously bad
    2) You become consciously bad
    3) You become consciously good
    4) You become unconsciously good
Watch this video and learn about each of these levels, and how you can better embrace this feeling when it crops up during your journey!
If this video brought any value to you it would mean the world if you hit that like button, left a comment to share your thoughts on the subject, and subscribed to our channel.
I am grateful for you, friends!

I’m watching this after just getting spiritually beaten down after losing time and time and time and time again from classmates clearly better than me. And this video helps a little. Thank you

You never know that newbie’s background - could be a wrestler - I came in fresh, but with almost 30 years martial arts experience - you just never know…

Professor, you nailed it! Man I still feel like this as a purple belt! Peers ask me how long you’ve been training and when they hear my response, they’re like wow you must know a lot! My response is no not really. There’s so much to learn. Thanks for sharing.

I totally agree. A good example is when you first start as a white belt you may seem to be struggling for a long time and feel you're not improving.
Then a new guy comes in and you roll them for the first time and realize how much you've learned and improved.

Doing this for almost half a year and I feel like I lost momentum. Meaning that in the begning I was jumping on the oponent, attacking all the time, and now I am just brawling with my partners for hours and many times I don't get them tapped....

I was recently (Nov. 2022) promoted to brown belt by my very well-known instructor(s), but don't feel that I know enough to represent the belt well. I've taken to returning to mastering the basics. I don't want my black belt until I feel it... Is this a wrong sentiment? BTW, I train 4-5 times per week and I rarely miss class...

When I got my blue belt a few months ago I felt the same! Wanted it so hard and once I got it, I felt that I didn’t “deserved” yet. I fell that I’m better than the white belts but there’s still an effort to tap a few of them out.

I swear to god i remember when this actually happened to me and i remember that i once just raged in training and punched the opponent and knocked him out since im a MMA fighter and i have a very good striking..So please do never rage and not knock someone out accidentelly pleaseee

I legit get worse... I know because
Train 10-15 times a week. Get worse.
Take time off for whatever reason, come back - smash.
Train again 10 times a week. Get worse. Not subbing anyone
Take time off for whatever reason, Come back - sub everyone.
Train again 8 times a week. Get worse. Tapped by lower belts.
Take time off for whatever reason, Come back - sub upper belts.
    Mind = blown.

My man, check this idea out. This is probably the source of that feeling which very well could be a sign of your growth, as counter-intuitive as that might seem.
