Why Losing Your Passion for BJJ is Normal (How to Reignite It)

  • This might come as a surprised for you. But I don't think I'm passionate about BJJ, at least not all the time.
Here's what I mean. The definition for passion is "a barely controllable emotion."
And so if we use that definition. I haven't been constantly passionate about Brazilian Jiu-jitsu since I was a White Belt.
Now I still enjoy BJJ training, but it's closer to a relationship. Where it comes in ebbs and flows. Like a relationship with a person where sometimes you can't get enough of the person and other times not so much.
And I bring this up because our question today is about losing the passion for BJJ and I hear this from people all the time.
They say things like "I've lost the passion for Brazilian Jiujitsu. I just doesn't feel the same."
So you want to make sure that you're not trying to compare your current emotions to the emotions of the past, especially the beginning.
Along with this I share a few practical ideas on how to spark the passion for your training. Like trying new techniques or options.
I hope the video is helpful with your BJJ training.

Got my Blue Belt after a year of training (17/12/22) … still kept going 3-4 times a week but now it feels like I’ve lost my desire a bunch… I used to do it because I thought it was about impressing people & proving them wrong… but then I realised no one actually cares about you at all & now im stuck

Losing interest, a rut, decline, could also be a symptom of the body reacting to too much stress.
You undergo a lot of stress doing jiu-jitsu or any rigorous exercise. It might be "good stress" as far as your mind is concerned but it's still stress as far as the body is concerned so the body starts shutting things down to preserve itself. It sends signals to the body like pain, fatigue, tiredness, loss of interest, to tell it that rest is needed.
Now you couple that with your other stressors in life - be it long days at work, school, other life obligations - and it's no wonder you might need to rest or cut down the intensity. Other sports activities believe in rest in between training but in jiu-jitsu culture it is often encouraged to train as much as possible and sometimes that's way too much.

Wow I really needed this video. In my 5 years of training I have had a lot of ups and downs. Sometimes I'm really excited to go train and other times I'm just going through the motions. Im in a terrible rut right now but ill get through it. Being in a rut can be rough but it helps to hear someone with more experience put it into perspective. Thanks for the advise Chewy

I always loved the guy ritchie (who's a renzo gracie black belt) quote about bjj "it goes from being something you have to make a real effort to do to being something you just do". I compare it to playing guitar or another instrument. its almost like I want bjj to be the same something that's hardwired into my brain.

I'm going through this right now. Before Covid I was all in, studying in my mind, watching videos, I didn't feel lost. Then Covid came and everything shut down, after the restrictions in NYC started to go away I went back. The first day back was so bad that I forgot how to tie my belt lol. I keep going 1-3 times a week, but my hunger and confidence level is just not what is was. It's been about 1 month heading into 2 months and I am just trying to figure out how to find that hunger, confidence and game all over again.

This is my problem. I'm 45, which alot of aches and pain and back problems. I can't move like I used to. I keep losing to white belts who are 25 and young. Sometimes I can get them but that is on a good day. These younger guys have cardio for days. It is hard to keep losing when you used to win more.

A dogg yo-I live about an hour from Chewy’s gym and actually train with some people who train with him at my club. The road the gym’s on is US Highway 31W, Dixie Highway.
To locals who know what the traffic and pedestrians are like, it’s sometimes referred to as “Dixie Die-way.” Sadly, ‘tis one of the most dangerous roads in the state.
Hence, you hear squealing brakes and blaring sirens on quite a few Chewjitsu videos. 😬🚔

Hey Chewie. Do you have any advice on dealing with knuckle joint pain? I'm a new white belt (I've been practicing about five months) and older (just turned 50) and the other night at practice my knuckle joints were hurting so badly that I couldn't really get/maintain a strong grip. I've noticed this being a problem for the past month or so, with some days being not so bad, and some days being like last night.

Gary- try some finger sleeves. You can get them on Amazon cheap. My wife uses a set that goes over her two middle fingers on each hand. She was having some bad knuckle pain and those have alleviated most of it.
Also could it be your game? I typically only had issues with knuckle pain when I was learning spider guard. I have played it so much that it doesn't bother me anymore.

    • @garybolenable
      @garybolenable 5 лет назад

@@crowdaddy13 - I think it was a combination of spider guard and practicing maintaining guard, a lot. Because my guard sweep is practically non-existent, I tend to rely on death grips. I did order some finger sleeves though. Hopefully between them and the suggestions by Brent and Concepcion (yep, I'm trying it all), It will start improving.

So before this summer, I had been slowly losing my passion for jiu-jitsu, but during the summer break, there was an official jiu-jitsu summer camp kinda thing I went to. We could train every day of the week multiple times a day with super high-level people there which was super awesome. But during the normal, compulsory training, the space was super full as we were about 60 kids in there (the entire group was 180 kids big but we were separated into three groups to keep it somewhat manageable) so it was not super fun training. But the evenings were great. I decided to do the optional BJJ class (the camp was about German ju-jutsu but German ju-jutsu is in the same organization as BJJ, JJJ and Hanbo-jutsu so there were optional BJJ and Hanbo-jutsu classes so we could expand our horizon so to speak) because I sucked on the ground (and still do but less) and it was super fun. That entire experience just completely re-ignited my passion and now, it's stronger than ever before. I still look forward to training, especially as I can do it only on fridays and also not during school holidays. Luckily, the guy who previously was the co-instructor now does most of the classes and always does a bit of rolling at the end which is a true morale-booster as drilling combinations with little resistance gets boring fast.
As for the reason why I originally came: I am a subscriber to your newsletter (the one who originally subbed only for the ebook planning to unsub immediately but then stayed due to the pure goodness it is and whom you had a little chat with) and my inbox was getting kinda full but I didn't want to just delete all the vaöuable bjj/life lesson the emails contain so I summarized them. Ended up with exactly 3 pages.

Nathan- there are a few good escapes from kasa or "scarf hold". Since you are a taller guy, if they are keeping their head up too high and you can push their head back, you can reach up with the leg and pull them down. There's also some good bumps where you can bump him up above you, scramble to your knees and go for the back. The main thing is keeping him from grabbing the arm on the same side he's laying on.
Try Jason Scully- 23 Positional Escapes in 11 Minutes. At 7.45 he has multiple escapes from scarf hold. Most are basically the same ones Ive learned at my gym and work pretty good.

And in all honesty, at 140 lbs, it's always going to be tough under side control, especially with guys 75-100 lbs bigger. Even with good technique you will struggle. My gym has monsters, and I am always being crushed.
