Be Smart With BJJ Training - More Is Not Always Better

  • Most people think the secret to getting better at BJJ is simply training more. That the only thing they lack is some extra rolling or mat time.
    While more mat time definitely helps someone with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. What some people, like myself, have discovered is that there can be too much of a good thing. And you need to be smart with your BJJ training so that you avoid overtraining.
    As I share in this video. Back in 2010 when I had the chance to finally do BJJ full time without any other distractions. I started training like a mad man.
    I'd often train twice a day and once a day on the weekends. So I'd go 7 days a week with no rest.
    Eventually I started to become run down from this super high volume of training. And even worse was the fact that the payoff for more than doubling of my training volume was minimal.
    I touched on this subject because I was asked a question from a viewer Lee who says he's training BJJ 6 days a week right now. But he says he felt better when he was only training 3 days a week. He feels the need to continue the 6 days a week to better his Brazilian Jiujitsu but is wondering if he should drop back down.
    Hopefully if you're having the same question this video will help you.

    BJJ is so addictive. In my experience, it is harder to be discipline and not train jiu jitsu rather than train. I used to just train only jiu jitsu 5,6 days a week for a year + and it did not work out for me. My jiu jitsu just didn't get any better and I start having tightness and pain in my lower back. I took 9 months off jiu jitsu to regroup. I came back with a better calisthenic/lifting routine 4x a week and train jiu jitsu only twice a week + 30 mins of stretching after class. I find that now my jiu jitsu are getting better at a faster rate, my body is stronger and pain free. BJJ is not easy on the body. BJJ is a martial art not a strength conditioning or a recovery program. Having the discipline/ long term mindset to find the sustainable way to train BJJ and maintain a strong, pain free body is not talk about enough in the community. Thank you for this video Nick. I really enjoyed your channel. :D

      GREAT GREAT channel I love it. Instead of addressing how to do a technique you address the training and experiences of learning jiu jitsu. The body IS a finite resource and I always said this to my training partners in different words. I would tell them take care of your body cause you can't go to Walmart and get another ACL, watch your takedowns cause you can't go to Target and get another pain-free spine. Subscribed and thank you.

    I just started BJJ a couple months ago and I’m an obsessive person. I’m finding what you said to be spot on. More so on the injury front. Couple that with two nights of softball and I’m thrashing my body at 37. I think I will scale back to only 3 days of drills/rolling with maybe a technique focus day. Awesome advice.

    Nice advice Chew. I'll be 41 in just a few days and I know for my long term survival in BJJ 2 days per week is key for me. I work hard during those 2 classes, but anymore and it would put me over the top. Something I think lots of folks(especially us that have full time jobs, kids and their sports) don't take into account that these are stresses, not in a negative sense, but stresses. Both of my kids play sports and the past 2 and a half months it has been 2-3 games per week with many Saturdays fully taken up by these ball games. I know that I will never be the best with this amount of time, but if I stay with it for the next 20+ years, I'll be great.

    As a 45 yr old brown belt with Rheumatoid disease and 30+ years of martial arts (not all BJJ, of course), I find the message in this video to be very wise. Too many folks in BJJ compare themselves to elite athletes and competitors, and expect that if we aren't going all out all the time, we aren't doing it right. If I went "all out" all the time I'd be hurt and unable to train at all (I know, I've done it. I ain't 25 any more!). Consistency and focus are the keys to improvement, not always intensity. Thanks so much for the videos. I love your channel!

    i tried rolling 5 days a week but my body never felt like it had recovered fully even after a 2 day rest. i still do 5 days but i just roll 3. i can now drill techniques all week and still have a good amount of energy to roll.

      John Arroway: 37 year-old here, training 5-6 times a week for the past 5 months, white belt. It's been tough on the body, but I supplement well and try to take it easy on the days I really feel tired but still don't want to miss the class...in these cases I just drill or roll with lighter opponents forcing myself to develop my game on my back instead of guard passing. Other days, when feeling rested I pick out harder and heavier opponents and roll with passion. So far I've been in two tourneys, with a 3rd and 2nd place (last Sunday!). Keep it up, buddy! Not like when we were 20, but we can still be hard as nails!!

    everyone talks about days of training but not hours of training. classes are usually 1 to 1.5 hours. what's the strategy? class and independent training all day? morning class then a night class? what constitutes training? weights and cardiovascular is included in with the defintions of bjj training? it's be really nice to see a weekly strategy broken down by hours covering all aspects of training as its done in other sports.

    I train 6 times a week then do a quick lifting after bjj and when I get a small injury I still show up to technique class (fundamentals) and skip the rolling and skip the weight lifting too. I do end up feeling good but injuries end up healing slower

  • @oldercloudify

    this really resonated with me. I'm about to turn 42, and I'm starting to feel it. I've been training consistently for six days a week. I've been able to do this because I don't have children, and my job schedule accommodates such a high volume of training. I'm starting to feel the aches and pains more -especially when I drill takedowns a lot. I decided to scale back and take one additional day off, and moderate my output at class. Rather than going hard each class, it's better to go hard 1-2 days a week. I also work on mobility and flexibility. It's definitely a walk or marathon, rather than a sprint.

    36 yrld newbie to BJJ but been working out a long time. I like to get an hour workout in every day. But the days after I roll I have been doing 1 hr yoga for bjj or for runners, athletes, etc, then some drill conditioning. A spoon of l-glutamine in my acai spinach kale shake does wonders too. The only way I can describe it is giving my muscles a nice cold glass of water to drink. The next day I feel limber, energized and relaxed. HTH

    I started with judo for 3 years then I did bjj i got addicted to lifting weights and became bored of grappling ! I’m going back to bjj now as I find it easier on the body compared to judo! I think 3 times a week bjj is enough for a recreational hobby especially if you have a job and like to train cardio or weights. That’s just my two cents. I love your channel by the way.

    Knock on wood, no serious injuries yet. I’ll be starting a new semester of classes soon and take off 2 days each week

    Such an underrated topic. I understand we are all superheroes and vikings but there comes the moment when you can''t wank or even sleep normally and it is not nice.
    I tend to miss 2-3 weeks every 10-12 sessions as not only do I feel the damage but learning 10 new techniques every week is useless to me. This time off helps me understand and recover. Its vital to rest and to listen to your body. Fuck the egos and be smooth.

    I train at AOJ and we have guys that train multiple times a day everyday. and that's fine if you want to be a world champ but, if you want to just enjoy the sport it's not needed. I train every other day and if I'm dead tired I just ask my partner to lightly roll and work on techniques. usually the older guys are super receptive lol.

    During the week we usually roll light to moderate and we drill self defense, submissions, and defense. Weekends are for all out open mats. If you roll at a high intensity 6 days a week your body is going to shut down on you. Sometimes I'm wanting for more rolling time but I realize that my instructions know what they are doing as they have been doing this longer than me so I go with the program... not to mention, drilling/practice is what makes perfection, not live rolls.

So i decided to scale back to 2x group lessons and 2x private class and 1x open mat so (5x) +/- 6-7 hours, plus 2 hours mma / kickboxing, in total 9 hours. I also hit the gym 2-3 times per week compound exercises 45 mins and I take one day rest! It is going way better now. I train this much because I want to compete in December.

    Mid 50’s here. 3 days a week seems to be my max. I can do 5 days a week, but I’ll have to take the entire next week off for recovery.
    Also, during roll sessions, I try not to go hard all the time. In fact, I save the last roll for 100% against someone my level.
    I used to defend hard, but I noticed that can damage my joints too. So, if I’m defending 80%, and I still can get out, I generally tap. If a girl is using proper technique, I normally tap also.
    As for advancing in Jiu Jitsu, I like to study instructionals. It goes so much more in-depth than the class.
    Then when I come to class, I try to implement what I learned. Then go back to instructionals when things don’t go right as planned. It’s usually because I forgot a crucial step.

    • @JD2jr.
      @JD2jr. 7 лет назад +3

      I don't know what that question was actually asking, but I had a few judo matches with a blind guy. It's really not that much different rolling with someone who is blind because really, 90% of what you do is by feel anyway. We would start with both people gripping the other, but otherwise, same thing.

    • @practicemoreted5542
      @practicemoreted5542 7 лет назад +5

      That's pretty amazing. Always thought blind people would have a slight disadvantage but I've seen black belts roll with their eyes closed because they don't really need them to know what's going on. To answer your indirect question, Lee Sin is a champion from the popular video game League of Legends. He is a blind shaolin monk of sorts, uses sound and vibration to see the environment.

    3x a week is my optimal amount of jui jitsu. I am older and I need a day to heal up. I still work out on the other days. But my normal workouts are nothing compared to jui jitsu.

    I love working out and fitness I train twice a week and I feel great unless you plan on competing and you’re just training for self defense I think 2-3 days is great you stay fresh plus how many fights are you gonna get into in real life.

    • @davideric8250

      BJJ is fun but I would not say its the best for self-defense. If you want self-defense there are better arts like Boxing, Wrestling etc..

    • @davideric8250
      @davideric8250 4 года назад

      MT is maybe the best as most fights occur in close contact standing up

    I only train 2-4 times a week so 3 days on average: and I’m a purple belt who taps out black belts. Some guys need to train 5-6 days a week. Everyone is different.

    Yeah I did this my third week including running and lifting weights and hitting practice hard 3-5 times a week on the third week my body over heated and just shut down especially since I was wearing too many clothes and not use to the GI ... so yeah take it easy .
    Also I'm 29 and was wondering if I was too old to start , fuck it , jump in train smart and listen to body ... screw age

    At almost 50, I'm good with 3 days, 2 of jittsu, 1 MMA. Two more days of light weight-training, 2 other days of nothing. I'm learning, not feeling blown out or injured...but, my question, how do you have a 'light' training day? Every time I go there, it's like a war. :)

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  7 лет назад +1

      Light day for me is movement, drilling active recovery work. No hard rolling and no heavy lifting.

    I train in the early morning due to my work schedule. I am 43. I do crossfit with my wife on Monday Wednesday Thursday and bjj Tuesday and Friday. Been doing this since I started bjj 8 months ago. Been doing crossfit much longer. My joints are starting to hurt. I may be over training especially for my age. I am thinking about cutting out Thursday Crossfit and making it a rest day. I was a Marine so I tend to be stubborn but I am feeling it. I wrestled a lot when I was younger so being back on the mat is awesome.
    Sorry for so much background information. I just want you to know where I am coming from.
    What do you think?

    • @Papasquatch73

      Saturday and Sunday are my off days. Saturday I go to chiropractic and massage. Then just veg out. Sunday is church and chores. No stretching or foam rolling on those days

    • @andrewandrew5489
      @andrewandrew5489 7 лет назад +1

      Ohana7 it depends on if your only doing technique, or if you are sparring. also, there's flexibility training, weight training and so forth. work on what's gonna make you better. and how much mental capacity you have also.. I mean, somethings take more time than others to process.. but if your rolling with little guys go all day! lol.

    your body will eventually wear out,- knees , etc.. just you wait and see... study bjj as a hobby , which will preserve your body and allow you to be able to walk when your older. trust me even RG is all beat up and has a few regrets. becoming the goat at bjj won't hit you any jackpot financially, those benefits are reserved for pro ball

    I don't give a fuck,best thing to improve is studying techniques 2hours every day and really try to understand them,then use them against a resesting partner in sparring,because there is no "perfect technique" so imo drilling is overrated.

    I humbly disagree with saying its not beneficial to go more than 5 days a week. Everyone is different. Im 21. I train 6 days a week, multiple times a day some days. I get optimal sleep and my nutrition is good. My body is hardly ever beat up and I roll hard almost every training session.

    • @thatguyjosh2322
      @thatguyjosh2322 4 года назад +1

      You're 21 so your body is still very young and resilient. I'm 30 and 6 days a week of hard training would kill my knees, shoulders and fingers. No more than 4 days a week with only 2 days of all out sparring.
