I've yet to meet a new purple belt that felt like they deserved it.

I keep hearing these descriptions of what a purple belt is and I guess it should be reassuring because they often do describe me....but it's not. I was just "given" one and I really don't feel good about it. I say "given" because I don't feel it was earned and I feel like because I'm near 50 it was awarded on some kind of scale. I'm really fine staying a blue belt. I just want to train and go to the gym.

good mind set but to your coaches defense he may see something you don’t. He may see you are capable so now rise to the occasion and drill harder explore and expand your game

Imposter syndrome. It's normal my man. Your coach knows a lot, trust his abilities. That includes his choices in promotion for reasons he has chisled out over time. OSS

I don't know your size. But if you're going to grapple....most purple belts are horrible with handling strength....and start getting into that area of grading people's bjj based on their inability to execute against strength. I think it's at the purple belt level where you guys really need to understand the importance of coupling strength training...instead of unnecessary berimbola attempts, and inverting....lol
    Congrats on your promotion
