I also struggled with this concept and my Russian teacher at the time (some years ago) gave me exactly the same advice as you did in the video: Just use "только" if at all in doubt.

It seems that your main word is только and you add лишь to emphasize its meaning. It is rarely used and doesn't really change anything. I suggest to avoid it.

I also translated the same example on translate.yandex.com; with "почему" it translated as "why does he have 2 phones ?" and with зачем" it translated as "why does he need 2 phones ?". Because of two things: • No distraction since its a guy • Its also help full because of the masculine and feminine nouns and etc in the Russian language, so its lot better to learn from a guy, because you won't get mixed up with female nouns and such
