I don't usually care about celebrity stuff, but she is really awesome for this. I have bipolar 1 disorder with psychotic features and it makes daily life really difficult, even in between manic / depressive episodes. I feel that Selena opening up to the world about having bipolar and having to go to the hospital for it makes a very big difference in the public perception of bipolar and mental health hospitalizations. People look up to celebrities and I think that people are more accepting of a celebrity that they like or idolize.
Stuff like this bridges the gap in people's minds between bipolar disorder and themselves. This shows them directly that people with bipolar are not unrelatable monsters that commit crimes and hurt people. The media like to push the narrative that people with certain mental health conditions are like heartless, explosive, aliens. Her doing this is directly reversing that stigma and I respect the hell out of that.
P.S. - I don't know why the director said that she's "broken". I feel like that's not a very nice thing to say about someone even when they say it about themselves. My bipolar does not make me "broken", it's just a part of me that functions a little differently than the average person. I would much rather be me than just an average person with an average life. That doesn't sound broken to me at all...

A lot of people give in to hiding their illness by using substances. It's admirable and incredibly wholesome that she's using the resources available, not only to help better herself but also so that she can try to make a positive impact on other's lives. These are the celebrities who deserve to be represented as role models to people. They are real people who share their real struggles in life and the importance of taking care of yourself.
The people who glamorize their lives and act like everything is perfect all the time aren't relatable and actually do more harm than good to people who look up to them.

Having a nervous breakdown mixed with having Lupus, being Bipolar and a heavy dose of Anxiety is no joke. I'm just a no one (without the insane pressures that she's under) and I had a complete breakdown in 2011, between being Bipolar my self and developing an anxiety that basically made me Agoraphobic, it took a long time to get back to some kind of normal. With the family, fans & support Selena has around her, it'll be hard at times but she's a fighter and she'll get better a little bit each day.
If you know someone who is Bipolar, I swear that we're not A-holes, out of no where it just happens, we know it and its a struggle to control it. Same with Anxiety, give that person a hug once in a while, it means a lot even if we don't show it.

I am sayin this because you got diagnosed with bi polar and schizophrenia which I don’t think is a thing. There’s something called Schizoaffective disorder which is basically bipolar plus schizophrenia. And also look into ctpsd because it’s lot more common then ptsd and a bit different. Hope this helps! Those disorders are no joke!! It’s life threatening and causes an extreme amount of distress for the individual! And of course can effect others around them but mainly the individual!! At age 34 in 2009 I went through a breakdown. I would wake up at 6am to get ready for work, sit in the lounge with a coffee and start crying. After 2weeks of this happening, I asked myself what is happening.
I lost all conference in myself and couldn't cope with life. I did something stupid and was admitted to a hospital for 2weeks. Hospital was ok as everyone couldn't lie about why they were there. I feel going through that has changed me for the better. Ive become more self aware and more engaged in life, even though i still have my ups and downs still causing me to become unemployed sometimes.

I was diagnosed with bipolar 2 over 20 years ago, but just started taking care of myself 5 years ago. I'm always inspired when I see public figures be open about their diagnosis. Sadly, there's still a lot of stigma around mental illness and the best way to combat that is to openly share your lived experience.
For others who were recently diagnosed and looking for support, NAMI and Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance are great resources. Lots of educational material and support groups.

I dont like when ppl who got a diagnosis for mental illness in a moment of their life think of themselves as broken or say “I’m broken right now, but one day I’ll be whole”
I myself am guilty of this, but as I get older and I’ve lived with my depression and PTSD longer I realize I was never broken, things out of my control happened to me, people treated me in ways they shouldn’t have and my mind did the best it could with the few tools I was given to cope
The aftermath is the physical stuff like the depression or anxiety
But the amazing thing about human beings is we can go through the worst things and witness terrible things but we don’t give up
We may stumble but we keep trying…that isn’t being broken it’s unbelievable strength
Idk who needs to hear this…but I promise it gets better, in the end you always have to be your own best friend, be kind to yourself and never give up on yourself

Okay, fine. I have bipolar too. And I know that I can live fully happy life. And got remission. But she doesnt say ANYTHING about the meds. And its really important part, the treatment. We dont cure from bipolar. It always stick around. And therapy is really really important because it gives us knowledge about illness and how to cope with it. But its not depression. so its not just therapy, its the meds too. One day we may dont need them if we got remission, but its a long long journey to get there. And in every moment we can got episode. And then,.again, we need meds. I do yoga, i meditate. And i work with people with diagnosis from 9 years. And I think the psychoeducation and changes in the way we live is the most important, right after meds. I live with it from 12 years. And, now I know, that people with bipolar got a little different structure of brain, in some parts. So, what I wanted to say - do not be afraid to go psychiatrist and do not be afraid of meds. You will be, finally yourself. In "between"

For 10 years, I refused to take any medication, but medication saved my life especially Lamotrigine. Last year was the worse major depressive episode that I’ve experienced and psychosis made it worse. Right now, I feel great. I exercise, eat healthy, and I have a lot of other outlets to help me. I wish her program would help educate people on the importance of medication and seeing a psychiatrist.
