Carnivorous Snail Eats Hermit Crab Alive!

  • These carnivorous snails (Agaronia propatula) are found on beaches throughout the Pacific coast of Central America. They move slowly through the wet sand until they encounter a potential prey item at which point they pounce. After grabing their prey, they force it toward the back of their pseudopod (foot) which forms a large pouch that will eventually engulf the food item. The snail will then bury itself into the sand where it will enjoy its meal in peace. These snails can even be convinced to attack a human finger as you can see here! If you don't believe us, see for yourself at • Carnivorous Sea Snail ... !
    Video recorded on Playa Grande on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

      Well, that's not entirely a joke. In fact crabs leave their shells...problem is they only do it to get a new one, so you barely can see them without them on.

    I don't get the logic of saving the crab and killing the snail. They are both wild animals, neither of them is a pet. They are both in their natural habitat, not a setup. Both the snail and the crab kill other animals to eat. The crab was already stung and paralyzed by the snail. So why do people want to save the crab? I don't get it.

    • @chaotixthefox
      @chaotixthefox 6 лет назад +5

      flaggschiffen Ah yes, the paralyzed crab was struggling after being eaten...
      Looks more like a simple ambush. Not to mention the shell would be between the crab and the snail.

    • @midnight8341
      @midnight8341 6 лет назад +12

      Well, firstly, it is a basic human instinct to try and help those in need. It is actually proven that by the context of a nature documentary, you can make people team up with the lion or the gnu, just by showing them how desperately the lion needs that meat or how desperately the gnu is trying to not be eaten.
      Seeing the hermit crab helplessly being eaten by a snail, our first instinct would be to help the crab, because it's in life danger and because it's easier to read the emotions of a crab then a snail or project emotions onto them.
      So, these people are not stupid, they're just listening to their hearts, which tells them that it's wrong that this specific hermit crab has to die right now...

      and killing them all was way worse. the spider got its hard earned meal and you killed it for it? my opinion on this matter is that you are very stupid. thats like saying *oh a tiger just got a zebra i better shot them both*. i would go away from it as if i never heard the fly why you may ask? well because the spider worked on a trap that could give it food and now it has kids. the fly didnt see it coming so the spider got a reward for working (like you working for money but this spider does it for food) and then some random person heard this and kills the spider for? working hard and getting a reward. you trigger me alot.

      I don't suggest anyone do anything, myself at least. I say I would however on the basis I like hermit crabs, in fact I would keep it if it was alright and say this is the crab I saved from certain death. I also have a tendency to feel sorry for things in the event of their death cause I can empathize despite death being natural as I don't want to die despite that just being nature. I don't think most people suggest it matters greatly so much as they are expressing their wishes. If you think that's a problem then plot twist, you were the snowflake the whole time!!! WHAAAAAA???

      Yes they can; I've kept nearly a dozen as pets and got to see them switch shells on more than one occasion -- the affair is usually over with in less than 3 seconds, even for the large ones.
      I suppose the crab just didn't have the mental faculty to understand what was happening to it and didn't understand the nature of the threat it was facing until it was already too late. If I had to guess, the crab probably detected it was under attack too late and probably withdrew into its shell on instinct to protect itself the only way it knows how, not realizing that would make things worse.

    • @trickydiagram5267
      @trickydiagram5267 6 лет назад +5

      Cone snails use harpoons containing a powerful venom to paralyze its prey. The hermit crab was presumably stabbed by said harpoon and would have lost all but the most minute motor functions in the span of two seconds at best.

    • @midnight8341
      @midnight8341 6 лет назад +4

      KeenoMajeeno1 hermit crabs are not attached to their shells... They live inside them and use their "spare" legs to hold themselves inside or to slide in and out of these. If you try to get one out of it's shell, you will most likely hurt it, but not because it is somehow organically attached to his shell (like snails), but because it will hold on to it with brute force, no matter what you do...
