Portia was in full on Mission Impossible mode, closing in on her soon to be tasty meal. Absolutely love those little jumping spiders. I bought one to help me get over what used to be a debilitating arachnophobia, named her Lucille. After helping me get over that problem, I felt really bad about her being an only child and ended up getting her another jumping spider friend named Camille. They really are. If you hold one or even stand near one you can see how it watches you and follows what you're doing. Not out of fear but out of genuine curiosity. They won't run away from us like most spiders and they seem to be extremely confident and inquisitive. Remarkable animals.
We have 2 types of jumping spider in our garden and they really do have amazing eyesight. You can make movement 90 degrees to their front, and they always spin round to look at what made the movement. Then they'll either come and investigate, or they run off a short distance, then spin around to see where you are now or if you are still where they left you. 1 type of spider is small and has little compact legs, and the other type has longer legs except for their front legs which are extra long. I later found out that only the males have the longer front legs as they use them to do a dance and tap out a rhythm to entice a female to mate. I used to be heavily arachnophobic, but little guys like these with little attitudes have dulled the fear a bit. If a large spider is on me though, a spontaneous slap dance might still occur. Accompanied by little girl screams from a 50 year old man
Jumping spiders are way too cute. Crab spiders can also be quite striking. A lot of them like to hide in flowers or leaves to ambush their prey, so their natural camouflage will be patterned to blend in with their surroundings.

Every time this Portia footage is on, never fails in provoking a creepy sensation. Her tactics fit perfectly to our understanding! That's eerie, for it's a bug!
Look most humans I know cant build their own homes and source their own food. Their knowledge is well beyond the realm of most of the people filling the world today XD
gdblunt420 but we quickly learn how to and we can get a rough idea how already also we can do maths plan strategies much faster develop tactics use other animals to fight and philosophise
@@Cecilia-ky3uw But the theory of evolution would dictate that over time all animals and plants adapt to their environment based off of coping with predators, prey, environmental obstacles, ect. So you can say they dont use math or evolve by learning from other animals however that ideal is simply false. Not only have they learned from Hundreds if not thousands of species they have encountered over time, those that build homes show a natural talent in engineering and structural integrity. A spider can make a web able to trap creatures many times its weight. A group of beavers can stop a raging river. A group of killer whales can work in tandem while using sonar to map the environmental data in their head and instantly process how to respond to it. None of these are small feats, and though mankind can easily beat most of these achievements, the reality is it's a small number of people who accomplish these feats. Most in the modern era have trouble with basic survival is my point and I stand by it. Have a nice night though ^_^

About 20 years ago, there was an amazing BBC piece on the Indonesian fringed spiders ("Portias"), all set to Portishead tunes. Having done some research, what puzzles academics slightly is that these animals have perhaps 1/1000th the number of neurons that a lion has, but hunting tactics that are more sophisticated.
“At last, she succumbs to his advances and allows him to mate with her, he matched her expectations, alas, she kills him anyway” Most men wanna go out with a bang, but he went out banging
lady spider: 'Omg, he's such a good dancer, I wanna have his kids! ...but he did that one last leg kick just a little off beat, so I have to kill him, dang...'
I hope videos like this help some people come to appreciate spiders and to adopt a “catch and release” policy for any spiders they may find inside their homes. I used to be terrified of these lovely creatures, but through the years I have realized that they are extremely intelligent, peaceful, and deserving of our respect and kindness.
New research has shown that a centuries old theory is true, a tiny brain can work much more efficiently than a large brain. It's like computers, over time they get created more powerful and efficient as they become smaller.
As a long time supporter of Team Jumping Spider, the clever and funny anthropomorphism in the first clip was brilliant. Such a great way of turning these amazing little creatures from something creepy/scary into something fascinating, and Beeb Earth does it very well.
I can't lie - I watched part 2 over and over. I can't get enough of the dancing spider trying to woo/escape his desire. The music and editing are fantastic! Can't wait to share with my granddaughter and terrified-of-spiders son. Oh glee!
Imagine having to dance for your LIFE, while also trying to dodge the killer. I admire that little jumping spider so much. Most human men wouldn't do anything like that for a nice female, let alone for a crazy killer one lol
True, that is what every engineer is both happy/frustrated about. Nature is a rich pool of amazing ideas, executed perfectly and with an efficiancy we are not even close to match. But we are slowly building up. Improvements are beeing made daily.
Because a computer makes life and everything else. DNA code comes from a computer. Why do you think outer space is dark and airless. It is inside a picture tube. Big bang turns it on.
I love Jumping Spiders. Years ago I encountered one in my garden, and as I looked into its eyes eyes eyes, I felt a deep connection with it. Weird, but actually true.🕷

A female had babies recently and passed but ive been making friends with the babies now that they r a little bigger. They r such fun little creatures. That's interesting, they like camera lenses and being watched, especially Phiddipus audax, Bold Jumping Spiders. I've had them pose and ham it up for me and my camera. They're definitely intelligent.
Portia is actually one of the main characters in Adrien Tchaikovsky's "Children of Time" (she is a spider in the book as well). FANTASTIC book, especially if you like spiders.
It's a fantastic book if you love sci-fi, the whole question of alien intelligence and I don't mean that as in necessarily from another world, but a method of communication, societal structure and engineering of a kind unfamiliar to us humans.
There was a spider - not sure of the type - very small - used to be in a crack in the wall at my work. And every day at about 3:00 he would come running out, run all around in weaving, circling patterns and then return to his crack in the wall. Not a hairy type, small as the "a" on my little phone keyboard, and the legs were about as long as a comma, and all around his body, like a little star pattern. Very strange little thing.
Portia the spider reminds me of the ropelling kill scene in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. To think a spider has that level of tactical thinking to kill other spiders is mind blowing for something so tiny. I never kill Fuzzy jumping spiders; they are very helpful and friendly compared to other spiders. I also love how the male tarantula is described as a cowboy wanderer
This documentary is so amazing that at 1:59 you get a spiderman reference. The melody you listen has spiderman´s song leitmotiv but kind of altered. The original melody goes A-C-E, but here, for copyright issues ig, we have A-B-C-E. I may be wrong but i think its cool if they did it on purpose
Wow! Yes! Arthropods can perceive time as being longer than we perceive it, that's how they have cognitive time to move so quickly. Unless tarantulas perceive time as moving more quickly than other spiders and insects do, that must feel like immortality.
The various sound effects used with Portia were hilarious and so ingeniously placed. Kudos to the sound engineer.

Praise the Creator, the Father of Creativity.
some clips seemed cgi
It looks more unrealistic when you see it up close
"He lived up to her expectations, but she kills him anyway."
Jeez remind me to never get married.
Especially to a spider
- Mum, where’s dad?
- Er, dunno, why ask me?
lol :D maybe she didn't like his dance
Hey, quick reminder, don't get married.
He wanted kids so he's getting his wish
I have a pet jumping spider, they're like little cartoon buddies, I'm constantly in awe of how smart they actually are too!
Aww thats adorable. I spotted a female zebra jumping spider on my back yard wall last summer and she kept looking at me while I was trying to get a picture of her. Such a beautiful species
This is why I love spiders, so misunderstood but their methods of hunting and just their own ways of communication and construction are second to none such fascinating and beautiful creatures.
and they're so helpful to us (when we don't bother them).
Who create spiders?
Surely he is the greater
@@عبدالعزيزسعيد-غ9ف I did :)
Agreed well said
Every time this Portia footage is on, never fails in provoking a creepy sensation. Her tactics fit perfectly to our understanding! That's eerie, for it's a bug!
Not a bug. Not an insect.
An arachnid.
They are the intelligence that arachnids managed to reach until now 🥺
Look most humans I know cant build their own homes and source their own food.
Rest well little male jumping spider. We will all miss you.
Im always amazed as to how they manage to record these events so perfectly.
With insects and spiders they often set up indoor habitats that they control and can film more easily.
months and months of sitting around and decades worth of film lol

Portia has actually four superpowers, fourth one is her high-tech sunglasses that the narrator just can't see.
FYI the man you just referred to as "the narrator" is arguably one of the most iconic and well respected natural historians and documentary makers of all time and has had a massively active career spanning well over half a century.
Well, thanks for that!
@@itstitanium1151 No worries. I do apologise though, I apparently forgot to say in my previous comment who he actually is in case you were interested. His name's David Attenborough.
Thanks pal.
I think she was wearing contact lenses, not glasses.
I have four pet jumping spiders and they are exactly as pictured, geniuses. When hunting, they stalk their prey and always strike behind the head 😅
Yes!! I dont have any myself but ive seen how they tilt their heads like dogs and look at thinsg from different angles! They are so smart!
U
These are timeless documents. Thank you all who made them
The main thing I took from this is that jumping spiders are ADORABLE
I just love how spiders are all about traps and strategies, they really overpower stronger insects
“Now we just have to wait..”
“Oh look , a tree cricket right next to the lid!”
*Acting like he didn’t just put that cricket there with his bare hands lol
Can we have a round of applause for all the camerapeople out there filming all of these for us. That's an incredible job.
Clap! Clap! Clap! 👏👏👏
8:43 spider : "Aaaah !!! Close it ! Close it ! I'll miss lunch !!! " 😂
1:35 the way Attenborough says this line is incredible. "Portia...is a genius." XD
Whoa!! How cool
Maybe it’s the brain-body mass ratio?
whoever did the sound effects for this deserves a bloody oscar
Portia still blows my mind! What a smart little creature!!
“At last, she succumbs to his advances and allows him to mate with her, he matched her expectations, alas, she kills him anyway”
Most men wanna go out with a bang, but he went out banging
Lol
lady spider: 'Omg, he's such a good dancer, I wanna have his kids! ...but he did that one last leg kick just a little off beat, so I have to kill him, dang...'
Yeah, its only in insect world and only few insects does that
I hope videos like this help some people come to appreciate spiders and to adopt a “catch and release” policy for any spiders they may find inside their homes. I used to be terrified of these lovely creatures, but through the years I have realized that they are extremely intelligent, peaceful, and deserving of our respect and kindness.
I find a spider that can analyze situations and problem solve particularly disturbing.
Well, count yourself lucky then. Jumping spiders aren’t known to hurt people. Some people keep them as pets.
Why disturbing? I personally find their intelligence a beautiful thing. They are one if my favorite insects.
@@antisimanticath sorry, they're a different kind of arthropod than insects are
New research has shown that a centuries old theory is true, a tiny brain can work much more efficiently than a large brain. It's like computers, over time they get created more powerful and efficient as they become smaller.
@@naturalnashuan so your saying a spider is smarter than a human?
As a long time supporter of Team Jumping Spider, the clever and funny anthropomorphism in the first clip was brilliant.
Such a great way of turning these amazing little creatures from something creepy/scary into something fascinating, and Beeb Earth does it very well.
No matter how many times I’ve seen the first clip through the years, then her hunting strategies are still so fantastic to watch!!! Amazing
Portia is so cuuuteeeeeee❤️🥺✨
Lots of spiders are.
Jumping spiders in general are literally the cutest little fuzz balls.
*5:40** had me crying he dancing omg so cute ha* 🤣♥️♥️🕷
zeFrank1 did one video on that spider where it's a song and dance clip, it's hilarious
Found the female spider.
damn I'd like to dance for you ma😘😍
Yet again the beeb shows me that nature is something to treasure. Such incredible macro lens camerawork with David's voiceover.... I'm spellbound.
I've always loved jumping spiders, you can just see their intelligence. Like you can see that they think, it's incredible.
whoever filmed this, deserves all possible operator's awards. And music director
the 25 meter long web shoots was just unbelievable. It's so satisfying to watch. They're are the real artist 😍😍

Damn, that was at the top 10 anime betrayals.
😭
I can't lie - I watched part 2 over and over. I can't get enough of the dancing spider trying to woo/escape his desire. The music and editing are fantastic! Can't wait to share with my granddaughter and terrified-of-spiders son. Oh glee!
Can we agree that jumping spiders are adorable clever little 8 legged fuzzballs? Its those 2 big eyes. They always look so cute.
Imagine having to dance for your LIFE, while also trying to dodge the killer. I admire that little jumping spider so much. Most human men wouldn't do anything like that for a nice female, let alone for a crazy killer one lol
Be like Simon Cowell sitting there with a shotgun
Most human men would probably choose to die a virgin...😊
Damn spider da real simp literally died just to mate
@MY ANIMALS Male spiders naturally don't live long,
long enough to mate , they die young either way.....so why not die mating?
doesnt matter; had sex.

One of my favorite things in the world is when scientists are baffled. Especially by the natural world :)
Manly yes, but they like it too!
Big ups to that male tarantula; he's got the moves.
Lol! @12:37, my CC reads, "...he carefully delivers his packet of _spam_ ." There's gotta be a Monty Python joke in here somewhere!
12:06 I love the narrator's voice, is so low like he's even feeling the tension between the two spiders and he's so afraid of my man male spider.
you said it 😩
I love Jumping Spiders. Years ago I encountered one in my garden, and as I looked into its eyes eyes eyes, I felt a deep connection with it. Weird, but actually true.🕷
That first one is so brave. I cant imagine having to do that. I have made so many jumling spider friends since learning about them and all of them r wild. A female had babies recently and passed but ive been making friends with the babies now that they r a little bigger. They r such fun little creatures. Its amazing the females of the tarantulas can live 30 years!!
"He matches here expectations but, she kills him anyway". This resonated w/ me on many levels.
Spiders are awesome animals! We see them every day, but their secret life is the different story. Great!
Those little jumping spiders are something else,I remember watching one long ago and then without knowing it he pounced upon a tinier fly…was awestruck, being there at the “right” time.
That's life buddy trying to impress a girl who just wants turn u into an empty shell lmao
Lol, yup
The reason he gets eaten is to give energy to the female that allows her to produce and lay eggs

What I find amazing about these videos is how they actually got the footage. Amazing amazing amazing. The patience that the photographer must have had
How the f they even filmed that
By camera obviously
they record one spider for hours of footage then an editor creates a story out of the footage.
I can imagine it takes a lot of time and dedication. They use Macro lenses which can magnify very tiny things.

Guys, be safe out there!!😂
Jumping spiders are such amazing creatures; but I'm also really impressed with the Darwin's Bark Spider one. The bridge she built so make her trap was so impressive for her size. I'm scared of spiders in person, but they are quite interesting honestly.
I had pet jumping spiders. They like make eye contact... I could tell something more was going on in there it was weird
That guys excitement of the spider catching its prey was the cutest thing ever!
1:50 spider really said “Jarvis show me a good route to this guys Impending doom”
😭😭😭😭
6:10 omg the way she looks at him is like: "wooooooowwww"
There was a spider - not sure of the type - very small - used to be in a crack in the wall at my work. And every day at about 3:00 he would come running out, run all around in weaving, circling patterns and then return to his crack in the wall. Not a hairy type, small as the "a" on my little phone keyboard, and the legs were about as long as a comma, and all around his body, like a little star pattern. Very strange little thing.
So friggin cute, and I love their dance 🤣. My dude puts his 2 little legs up like he's being robbed lmao.
That close-up of pulsating spider guts is something I never knew I didn't need.
8:43 "STAAAAAAAHP IT YOU'RE GIVING ME AWAAAAAAY!!"
I love how it doesn't even attack the intruder it just goes mental on the door
CLOSE THE DAMN DOOR BLYAT
30 years! Some may live as twice long as 17 cicadas! Immortal in the bugs' world!
Wow! Yes! Arthropods can perceive time as being longer than we perceive it, that's how they have cognitive time to move so quickly. Unless tarantulas perceive time as moving more quickly than other spiders and insects do, that must feel like immortality.
Godamn I love Portia with my whole heart.
