    Jamie has not stopped growing from the moment he burned his shoes. He was always funny. But now he is my favorite character. Phil Dunster is crushing that role.
    For me, it is by far the best episode of the season.

    A lot like Nate and the Greek restaurant in the previous episode, Ted and the American restaurant are a lot alike. People see Ted as a cartoonish American stereotype much like the restaurant and it gets a low rating for people unwilling to give it a chance or try to understand it. Ted tries it out because he knows the feeling of being written off by others because of what everyone else thinks. Also, the sunflower is seen as the happiest flower and one that symbolizes loyalty and adoration. Ted stares at the painting of the sunflower and he sees home. He’s loyal to his home but also to his team and his breakthrough on a strategy combines homesickness with wanting to help the team.

    The song in the scene where Jamie teaches Roy to ride a bicycle is "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head", from the movie Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid". Specifically, it is from a scene where Paul Newman and Robert Redford are playing around on a bicycle with Katherine Ross. That scene was all about two men in love with the same woman, which has obvious echoes in the Roy, Jamie and Keeley love triangle, as well as being one more "triangle" hidden in this episode.

    This episode deserves all the awards, especially for the writing: juggling so many subplots, each leading to some kind of character growth or development, yet still making them all easy enough to follow, is _incredibly_ hard, and this script not only pulled it off flawlessly, it made doing so look _easy._

    The night this episode dropped, I had a really bad day. The kind that when you get home the first thing you do is scream into a pillow. So when the episode dropped, I expected to have an okay end to an otherwise bad day.
    I wouldn’t say my soul ascended to heaven, but the ending of the episode left me feeling hopeful-not just for Richmond moving forward, but for my own life too. And I knew you would absolutely love this episode.
    Side note: I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that you not only noticed the homomonument but also left a note explaining its historical significance. I knew Ted Lasso had great writers, I don’t know if one of them is LGBTQ+ or they all did their homework, but that scene with Colin and Trent was absolute perfection.
    Couple of blink-and-you-miss-it moments:
    A) as the camera is panning out on the team singing, if you watch Sam you see him coughing out feathers;
    B) Hannah Waddingham voices “God” in Ted’s hallucinations, and the credits for that line read “God as herself”

Setting that scene there was such a testament to the care the writers have, and just how much they respect their characters and the attention to detail. It deserves to be highlighted, both for the historical significance, but also just acknowledging that they had the respect to do that.

    I love how Jaime recounts his two trips to Amsterdam with his parents. While he can tell the story of the one with his dad, and it includes experiences that most people consider to be big deal moments, he literally says he doesn't really remember it. When he talks about the trip with his mom, going to museums and eating Stroopwaffles, you can tell he remembers every detail and has a connection to it. All his ego driven BS in previous seasons was cultivated by his dad, and the sweet/smart side of him was from his mom. The parent who cared about "being a man" and the parent who just cared about HIM.
    I also love that they gave Rebecca the full romcom treatment this episode. She deserved it- especially with a man that has his life together and keeps her on her toes but completely safe and cared for! (also, I don't think he meant "we did" as schmexy times, but falling in love)
    the Colin storyline just keeps hitting me in the feels! I love that Trent is becoming his mentor!

    I kinda wish the Dutch guy's daughter had been on the houseboat. That would've taken a lot of the tension out of the start of those scenes, where you're not sure if he's creepy or not (as you said, a dangerous situation for her to be in) and they could've still stayed up talking and bonding once she'd gone to bed. But it's a very minor gripe in a very good episode.
    I loved all the Jamie and Roy content. I thought his story about his first trip to Amsterdam was really telling. "Oh, you mean for me? No. I don't think so. I don't really remember." (I'm going from memory but that's pretty much what he said.) Which implies he repressed the memories or at least hasn't dug into that trauma yet. I love the evolution of his character though. Plus every season he has made key coaching decisions that benefit the club. Season 1 - trick plays (including Lasso special) and Moving Sam to offense. You talking in the beginning about Nate made me realize this show is TOP tier in making a good redemption stories. • @aquele4virou3
      @aquele4virou3 Год назад +1

      The problem with Nate is that he was a good guy at the beginning (even though he had the red flags from the start), and he was only shown support by Ted and Beard at first, and then all the others eventually, and he became the worst through actions of his own and he crossed lines Rebecca and Jamie never did. Yes, they are all complex, Rebecca was broken because of Rupert, Jamie was always guarded because of the abuse of his dad. Nate might not have the most perfect relationship with his dad, but he acted out against the people that only treated him well and lifted him up. His harassment of both Colin and Will was abhorrent. Now, I still like Nate and I am liking the route of his redemption, but I also think that while he can be brought back to his sweet self and he still has a good heart, at least professionally I wish he does not comeback, because yeah, forgive, but not forget. Workplace harassment and also that breech of trust, those are things tough to let go. I would like to see him happy and believing in himself more, but not at Richmond.

      I would buy the Nate/Jade redemption if he hadn't already told her, very movingly, why he wanted the window seat at the table -- for his PARENTS -- and she was rude and denied him for zero reason. Just to be cruel. And her refusal actually was part of Nate's buildup to his dark side. I absolutely find them gross together -- she's a bully, and Nate needs to be far away from that if he is to be truly redeemed.

    • @aquele4virou3
      @aquele4virou3 Год назад +2

      @@paramitch Nah, you can’t project this to her. Maybe it was policy. Don’t blame his “buildup to the dark side” on a woman we barely know the background of. Also, since that was his family’s favorite restaurant, she might have seen him before. Nate’s red flags have been there since season one and he was already being gross long before that episode, especially with his treatment of Will. And his main motivation for betraying everyone was his overconfidence over his abilities and how selfish and self-centered he becomes, and nothing she did. She clearly is shown of not being impressed by his act of superiority as an “important manager” and just gets to liking him when he was being genuine. She is not the problem here, she was very professional, maybe a bit rude but again we dont know the reasoning (also, i hear very common for english people, at least i see a lot of people talking about it), and in the end when he stood up for himself, she moved him to the table and just denied his invitation to go out bc she wasn’t interested at the time.
      Tbh, I’m more surprised she likes him now because the way he came back there feeling all important bc of a job and asked again would put me off so much. Nate’s general attitude towards women has always been a little gross, from passing comments spread out since the beginning, to calling Rebecca, his boss, a shrew, to kissing Keeley (they played it down bc they pitied him, but it was an awful thing to do).

    Funny when Ted sniffs the Arthur Bryant BBQ sauce, when Jason doesn’t have a sense of smell. Arthur Bryant is his favourite BBQ sauce. Also the God voice was Hannah, but credited as God as Herself. Ted is a visual learner so the “triangle trip” might be how he learned it.
    Will and his GF broke up, it was discussed in a previous episode, in a scene with Jamie, Roy, and Will.
    Boat Man is like a Dutch version of Ted, that was what I was thinking the whole episode. Also it was very rom-com the whole Rebecca and Boat Man.
    The whole episode is a love letter to Amsterdam, the birthplace of Brendan Hunt’s and Jason Sudeikis’ love for European football.
    Van Gogh and Ted have a lot in common, also Van Gogh killed himself so it might remind him of his dad too.
    Roy learning to ride a bike and being taught by Jamie was so cute! Also it might be a homage to Sarah Niles (Dr Sharon) who doesn’t really know how to ride a bike even though her character does. Watch the FYC Ted Lasso to see the behind the scenes on filming her bike scenes. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE BEHIND THE SCENES OF THEM LEARNING/TEACHING HOW TO RIDE A BIKE!
    Sam was coughing out feathers in the end bit! 😂

    This episode was absolutely outstanding. It felt like I was watching a really well done ensemble anthology movie that tells a bunch of small stories in a big city (a la "Paris, je t'aime"). I thought the Trent/Colin bits were so beautifully done, despite how sad it was hearing Colin's experience.
    I'd swear Isaac was paraphrasing Shakespeare when he was shouting to stop the team from arguing, but I'm not versed enough to place which play it would be from, if it is at all.
    Also fun little side note: the song playing when Ted enters the American restaurant is the same song playing when John Travolta & Uma Thurman enter the 50s restaurant in Pulp Fiction ("Waitin in School" by Ricky Nelson)

    A quick point about Ted as a coach. What Beard said to him in the Pub is accurate. When Ted said to him that it's not about the wins and losses, Beard pounded the table and yelled "DAMNIT, IT IS!" Because they aren't coaching Division 2 college kids anymore. They are coaching professionals. This is their livelihood. His first season he got the team relegated. That is a huge deal and would get most coaches fired. That's also a major loss of revenue for the team and also possibly for players.
    And then they just barely did well enough against championship league competition to make it back tothe premiere league. They have compiled Richmond's record since Ted took over as coach. To this point in season 3, it is 32 wins, 24 losses and 16 draws. Which is OK, but that is with one full season in a lesser league. They had Jamie, who was already one of the best players in the premier league before Ted got there. Plus Danni, who was already a great player in Mexico. (Remember the 2 Aces. Aces?) His record in Premier League only matches is 8 wins, 13 losses and 4 draws. And that includes the 5 straight wins after Zava joined the team. That is not good. Throw in a couple of games they would have lost if it weren't for in-game designs made by Nate and Roy. Nothing to write back to Kansas about. Overall, Dr. Sharon may be responsible for as many wins as Ted. And if the decision was his alone, she never would have been there. OK, so that was much longer than I planned.
    A d how does a film student ( I'm just guessing that here, I don't think you've ever mentioned it) not acknowledge he homage to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? The scene whee Redford says he won't jump off the cliff because he can't swim. Roy even gives the same "There, I said it" head nod. And then when Paul Newman was riding the bicycle around the cabin while Raidroos Keeep Falling on My Head was playing in the soundtrack.

Without the concern of power dynamics and age gaps, Rebecca, despite not knowing this Dutchman, she seems a lot calmer, less stressed. Sure there’s that level of uncertainty about the intentions of the Dutchman, but his equally stoic assuredness and blunt but kind honesty seem to help Rebecca let her guard down a little. “I just need to be vulnerable enough to let someone wonderful love me” Her words S2 (these writers are so good)

It was a very impressive western movie that totally veered from any typical western formula, largely because it was written by William Goldman - the man who wrote 'The Princess Bride'. I cannot recommend enough seeing this movie, even if you don't review it. The dialogue is amazing and the acting by Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Katherine Ross is sensational.
