The Ola thing is even sweeter when you find out the name was Toheeb’s suggestion because his own dad’s name is Ola. This cast, man. I love them all so much. And I LOVE Sam’s dad so much. He is perfection, exactly how I would have wanted him to be.
"Shut up and dribble" was a reference to something said to LeBron James. The day after this episode aired, LeBron was spotted wearing an AFC Richmond hoodie. Also! Since you mentioned Trent's T-shirt game... they found that shirt at a thrift shop. The day after this episode aired (again, same day), the university's gift shop had to issue a statement: "They didn't have to ask permission to use it so we weren't prepared, that shirt is out of print, we're making more, we never expected to need so many, please have patience, they're coming!" 😁
Ah, that makes sense. They do draw a lot from real life on this show. And I love that about Trent's T-shirt 😂 I love shopping for things I've seen characters wear, but I didn't think about it being out of print. I'm glad they're bringing it back for people who want it!
At the end of episode 6 on the team bus, Trent was wearing a Midlake t-shirt. Midlake is a local indie band in Denton, Texas. They were amazed to see their logo in the episode.
Also love the callback that was Nate’s dad’s grand gesture, a lot of people think it was a bit much but remember in the first season Nate said he was a cartographer, so it totally fits his character
I think the writers are really pushing for him this season. His story arc makes perfect sense, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're also ramping him up to get him that much deserved nomination. We all know he deserves it ❤️
I could easily watch a whole episode of Ted Lasso characters trying to do impressions of each other. Dani is so adorable when he tries to act aggressive.
By the way, did you notice THE GREAT ESCAPE theme playing when the bottle gets passed around? Such a great way to pay tribute to the film, especially considering how teamwork is such an important aspect of that movie too.
I believe a huge part of Jamie’s new outlook is because he’s no longer playing or living his life to impress his shitty father. That moment after Man City in season 2 was a real catalyst moment for Jamie, just like I believe Sam calling out Dubai Air was a really catalyst moment for Trent realizing he wanted to write things that we important instead of petty. The Cranberries song over all the London shops opening was 100% a reference to You’ve Got Mail.
Great point! And I hadn't thought about the Cranberries and You've Got Mail 😱 I love that movie, but I haven't seen it in year, so I didn't make the connection. Thank you for pointing it out!
You know what I love about these recaps and reviews? Even though I'm at LEAST twice her age (plus a bit), Movie Night at Jacqui's is like watching my favorite show with a good friend. :) When I first watch it, I think "oh, man - I can't wait to hear what Jacqui says about this scene!" A nice happiness break in a sometimes-crappy world. :)
I love how her reaction to Nate scenes have gone from anger to “Oh no, poor Nate!” and not in the sarcastic way that that reads. To make a redemption arc for a character is one thing. To make us dislike them, and _then_ redeem them, is a massive accomplishment
Way way back in episode 3 of season 1, in the article Trent wrote -- he said, "If the Lasso way is wrong, it's hard to imagine being right." Now, Trent is convinced that the Lasso Way is definitely right!
3:05 Sense and Sensibility. The story of a girl in a love triangle between the one that makes sense, and the one she really loves. Literature. It's a great metaphor.

£100k for a first edition of sense and sensibility. Remember Nate’s dad was a cartographer. The U.K. Home Secretary is exactly like the fictional Ted Lasso one. Jamie knows the system Ted wants to play as he played it at Man City.
And Sam getting backlash for doing the right thing is, as well as the obvious LeBron connection, in a UK football context it's also likely gotta be a reference to the backlash received by Marcus Rashford for his activism for school meals and other societal change he speaks out for. There was a lot of racism directed towards him and "shut up and dribble" has racist messaging itself if you understand the full context of it. The UK Home Secretary is definitely a toxic waste of space.
I knew this was going to be an amazing episode when it opened with "Dreams" by The Cranberries. The whole soundtrack for this particular episode was on point. We need more of Ola in this show. He's absolutely outstanding. On top of the "Shut Up and Dribble" being a reference to what Fox News said about Lebron James after he criticized Trump, Sam mentioning people loving him for playing until he misses a penalty kick is also a reference to three black England soccer players (Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford) that received racist abuse after missing their penalty kicks during the Euro 2020 Final. Fun little tidbit, when Jamie sets up the formation on the board to explain why he needs to be the central player in total football, he creates the same formation that Roy set up in his "5 dicks tied to one dick" drill (which surprisingly, this isnt the first time I've heard of a version of the dick string drill being used in sports. I never experienced it personally, but I'd heard stories of it being used as a drastic measure to correct bad technique for people competing in Hammer Throw)
So glad you released this today, which was bad day for me, had to go to ER for fall Monday where i fell from a tow truck and hurt my leg. This should be the last time an episode comes out late. Just been dealing with some stuff behind the scenes that's put me behind, but these will be coming out much quicker from now on 😊
YES. This and episode 6 were a 1-2 punch of top tier Ted. The clowns feigning outrage over this show "becoming political" are just up to their usual horseshit. This was phenomenal television.
I dont like when shows or videogames get overly political...BUT, this show does it in such a way that it doesnt feel forced, and the writing is phenomenal! I LOVE TED LASSO!
Personally, I've never seen this show as overly political, just addressing realities of people's lives. It would be completely unrealistic to have a show featuring international players in England without addressing their different experiences, and points of view. Ted Lasso just handles it very respectfully, and as always, chooses to find the positive in it. Massive props to the writers for that 😄
Love the juxtaposition of the locker room scene in this episode where Sam hugs and find comfort in his dad--- to the locker room scene where Jamie punches his dad and gets hugged by Roy.
For my money (which is laughable) this episode is simply one of the finest hours in television history. 🤣🤬😭🥰 Great reaction as always Jacqui, you're a Real One. 👍✌❤
Thank you! And I absolutely agree--Ted Lasso has knocked it out of the park with this episode (and the last one). I'm really hoping they stick the landing at the end of the season! ❤️
@@movienightwithjacqui I have confidence in the writing team (especially Brett), they haven't let us down yet. I'm just glad the writers strike didn't come any earlier, though I completely support the WGA (and unions in general). ✊
Waiting for your reaction to 3-8 because that was a doozy. This episode was one of the funniest of the season though. Plus, it led to Richmond working their way out of their losing streak.
Oh, the other thing: funniest line of the SEASON, as far as I'm concerned: Rebecca's brilliant "The Eiffel Tower is just a lamppost with a publicist!" Whoever wrote that needs a raise STAT (along with the rest of the WGA... speaking of which, thank Goddess they finished writing this season before the strike started!)
I freaking love the Major League reference. "Juuuuust a bit outside." Ted also had one in season 1, "Win the whole fucking thing" Also its fun cause the beginning premise was kinda like Major League. Owner who wants the team to lose.
So completely love your reaction to this episode. Been waiting for this, and it is truly a worthy reaction for the genius that this show displays in each episode. I found the next episode bittersweet, but again a necessary step in the storyline, which a few twists and turns, but setting up what will be the conclusion of this arc. I heard an interview with Brendan where he was talking about consideration for a fourth season, but I have a strong belief that it cannot continue in it's present form. BTW - since I conveyed the theory, I still think the Shite in Nining Armor" is still Jamie. The setup is truly leading to that, and I feel her ex-date's girlfriend was a red herring to throw off the theorists. We shall see. I believe that all storylines will come to a conclusion at the end, but in a way that they could be picked up again. I'm dying to hear your reaction to Episode 8, I have soooo many things to say. (Not that I don't always). Being a writer, I seem to always write a book ... sorry! Much love to you! Your reactions always bring a greater life to my enjoyment of this remarkable show. Much love!
Honestly next episode has one of the best character moments for Jamie. Calling back to “accountability matters.” Was so proud of him! When Trent talks about the inevitable “conclusion” does bum me out because it could be referring to the show as a whole.
"I'm not saying that Jack is like Rupert..." I _am_ saying it. I've been saying it since she and Keeley first hooked up. Jack is absolutely radiating red flags and Keeley is just too enamored to see them. It would not surprise me at all, in fact, if we find out that Jack's offer to fund Keeley's venture in the first place was just so she could sleep with her. Nor will I be surprised when Keeley is unceremoniously tossed aside for the next pretty young woman who catches Jack's eye. But this, it would seem, is a mistake Keeley needs to make for herself, and thank goodness she'll have Rebecca to help pick her up afterwards.
I think #4 will be “gezellig,” and Rebecca will be the one to suggest it (callback to Ted’s “got to leave space to let God walk into the room”). Also, the last word Roy says before that conversation begins is, “Shame.” In the same episode we get another GoT alum.
Love all your reactions Jacqui! It’s so amazing you got into Ted Lasso. Have you seen the original promo vids that the character is base on? Check those out and then come back with a new light on Ted. 😊😊😊
I found it a bit hand-wavey that there was no financial repercussions for the team after burning a bridge with their main sponsor. A social media startup (Bantr) doesn’t have the same sponsorship dollars as an international oil conglomerate. It’s just a loose string that never gets satisfactorily explained
To be fair it depends on the size of the contract especially for a team that was mired in mediocrity for years, also venture capitalist concerns aren’t exactly short of money either, if I remember rightly it’s Jack who is behind both and is the boss of the VC funding both Bantr & Keeley. For me the most unrealistic thing relating to your point is the fact that they weren’t sponsored by a betting website like so many lower end Premier League & Championship clubs are (thankfully something else that is now being phased out)
Tbh, what happened to Sam’s restaurant was actually mild when you compare to the abuse and worse that real footballers get for just how they play before you even get close to any political statement they might make.
No major spoilers here since this post was a year ago and I'm aware that you've long since finished the series -- but there are so many warning bells here with Jack. I was absolutely livid when she defaced the book. To me it says "Hey, I bought this rare thing that is special to you, but you can only have it after I've made sure that its only value is in how it makes you think of me." Classic narcissist behavior. Once you see it, you realize it's present in almost every thing she does from the very beginning.
Yeah a lot of the weird "anti woke" corners of the internet were angry about this plotline but I noticed just as many responses from folks who actually live in the UK say they went too soft on that character compared to reality.
Jack is giving SO MANY RED FLAGS. Run Keeley, RUN! Red Flag #1 for me: Jack writing in a priceless *FIRST EDITION* book?! You don’t write in a Jane Austen novel with purple glitter pen! She’s bad news. Also, I don’t like the fact she was love bombing Keeley, that gave me the Ick. And the fact Jack is taking away screen time for scenes between Rebecca and Keeley…I’m not a fan. Jack needs to GO AWAY! Her only purpose is that she gave us Bi Keeley. Also 3:05…. The Sense and Sensibility of the Rom-Communism that is Ted Lasso. Keeley (Kate Winslet’s Marianne) and Jack (Greg Wise’s John Willoughby) will break up after very ugly scandal (probably caused by Jack), and Keeley will go back and be happy with Roy (RIP Alan Rickman, Colonel Brandon). And Ted and Rebecca are Elinor and Edward (Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant). It all fits so perfectly and the signs are all there. And in the bar with Keeley, Rebecca was spinning her ring…A LASSO RING. Do I need to spell it out? I don’t think so because her person, her true love…is literally on her LEFT RING FINGER.

Thanks! Been meaning to put it up all season, but better late than never, I guess 😄
I love your videos, they bring so much joy after a long day of work. Keep up the great work.
Love the juxtaposition of the locker room scene in this episode where Sam hugs and find comfort in his dad--- to the locker room scene where Jamie punches his dad and gets hugged by Roy.
Even as a reaction, this episode brought me to tears (in the best way)
Red strings around team *members* :D
Glad you got my joke 😏
Adorable reaction.
For my money (which is laughable) this episode is simply one of the finest hours in television history. 🤣🤬😭🥰
Great reaction as always Jacqui, you're a Real One. 👍✌❤
Jamie Tartt Guti-ing all over the place.
"Juuuuust a bit outside." Ted also had one in season 1, "Win the whole fucking thing"
Also its fun cause the beginning premise was kinda like Major League. Owner who wants the team to lose.
One of the best episodes of the show!
Much love!
40:55 "Red strings around team _members_" indeed!
Honestly next episode has one of the best character moments for Jamie. Calling back to “accountability matters.” Was so proud of him!
When Trent talks about the inevitable “conclusion” does bum me out because it could be referring to the show as a whole.
"I'm not saying that Jack is like Rupert..."
I _am_ saying it.
We love it too Jacqui
I believe there is no #4 for Total Football. The idea being that the work is never done and you can never truly perfect things.
Ooh, I like that! Great point!
I think #4 will be “gezellig,” and Rebecca will be the one to suggest it (callback to Ted’s “got to leave space to let God walk into the room”). Also, the last word Roy says before that conversation begins is, “Shame.” In the same episode we get another GoT alum.
@@richbininger8859 I do like that theory.
As much as I loved Sunflowers...this might be my favorite episode.
Nonso Anozie is really good in "Sweet Tooth" too
Superb! I loved Sweet Tooth
Love all your reactions Jacqui! It’s so amazing you got into Ted Lasso. Have you seen the original promo vids that the character is base on? Check those out and then come back with a new light on Ted. 😊😊😊
I did seasons 1 and 2, and the original skits on my old channel, if you're interested :)

Don't even waste your time. If anyone sends a troll comment. We've got em ✊🏽
For me the most unrealistic thing relating to your point is the fact that they weren’t sponsored by a betting website like so many lower end Premier League & Championship clubs are (thankfully something else that is now being phased out)
The new "comedic" sound effects are quite distracting. Other than that, great reaction as always.
Tbh, what happened to Sam’s restaurant was actually mild when you compare to the abuse and worse that real footballers get for just how they play before you even get close to any political statement they might make.
24:53 Me!
Respect!
👍🏾
Just a nomination? Not a win?
He deserves a win, but the fact that he hasn't even been nominated is a crime. At the very least, give him that 😄
Our real life Home Secretary in the UK is even more of a racist, a fascist and a bigot than the Home Secretary in this episode
Yeah a lot of the weird "anti woke" corners of the internet were angry about this plotline but I noticed just as many responses from folks who actually live in the UK say they went too soft on that character compared to reality.
From the character's name it seems they had the previous Home Sec Priti Patel in mind as well!
It's an amalgamation of the both of then.
God is not a woman. God is Morgan Freeman
