It's the best 2-player Star Wars game, period. It's an easier teach with less need to know the lore than War of the Ring, what I would consider it's direct competition. And, the game is designed to have "memorable moments". Much like Root, you probably know if you want to give this a shot. But each time I've played Rebellion, I've enjoyed it and you should too.
Played both War of the Ring and Star Wars Rebellion, and I like Rebellion a lot more. I am not a big Star Wars fan, but the concept of an huge force trying to swat down a the Rebel forces, while those Rebels sabotage every plan you make is executed so well in this game.
I adore both this game and War of the Ring... in fact, I rated them both perfect 10s on BGG. heh Easily two of my all-time favorites. I even invested in the Anniversary Edition for War of the Ring, which was quite pricey... got the Anniversary Edition expansion for it too. But yeah... if you made me pick, I would probably pick Star Wars: Rebellion. I also have more plays of it under my belt.
3:02 My very first game of Rebellion, my brother chose the planet to the left of Coruscant as his rebel base, and I got distracted going elsewhere just before I was about to check it. I literally ended up checking every single other planet in the galaxy, and went through the entire probe deck. My brother won that game. I've only played three times, but I've enjoyed every game I've played (even though I lost two of those). Every time the game clocked in at about 3 hours, so that seems to be about the usual time if the rebels are playing well.
I am making this game last for 3 hours every time. Just add house rules for combat. And it will be amazing and much shorter. No healing No re roling No Combat cards doublle swords are instead bonus dmg (direct hit ) by the number on the hero card. ( instead of re roling ).
Great video! Derek is 100% correct: there is NO BETTER thematic Star Wars experience you can get on the tabletop than Rebellion. I freaking adore Imperial Assault, and played the hell out of the old Decipher CCG, and Rebellion tops them all. It isn't a perfect game, but it is an amazing journey and a ton of fun.
Really more thematic than IA? I looove IA and it's currently #1 for me for more accessible Star Wars thematic games. I'm looking at the complexity of this and bin it in Arkham Horror level of complexity, which is very doable for me, and easy to get to the table.
@@stoogesmetal IMHO, yes. IA is a fun tactical game, but playing Rebellion is literally playing through the original trilogy of films on the table top. IMHO it is less complex than Arkham Horror with some fun "hidden base" bluffing mechanics (for the Rebels) and critical unit positioning puzzles (for the Empire). The asymmetry is one of it's major strengths.
Hmmm. Length is one of the best parts of the game. It takes us about 1.5-2.5 hours normally. Certainty the first play is five with rereading rules and cards, but after that I find it’s actually quite fast moving!
This was my first game when I got into the hobby, so the learning curve was really steep, just getting my head around normal BG terms like rounds and phases added to cognitive load. Around the 8:00 mark - In the movies, Space and Ground Battles are always happening simultaneously - I have zero problem with this.....hence it being called Cinematic Combat.. It stays true to the spirit of these scenes as youre recreating your own version of the OT and Rogue One in a box. Having to always finish a space battle before you even attempt a ground battle would just throw the balance of the game out of whack - and would disregard all the times we've seen someone lead a stealth strike team onto Endor or U-Wings drop off fighters onto the beaches of Scariff. Also General Tagge is pronounced Tag 🙂
I'm absolutely happy about this video...I've only started watching Quackalope since he covered ISS Vanguard with BoardGameCo a few months ago. And, after meeting Derek and his lovely wife at Origins a few years ago, this was truly a great surprise
I played it for the first time today, and It didn't take that long compared to how long I imagined it would take. Best two player non-casual game I've played to date. Note: we played without knowing the meta or the cards before hand, so everything was a surprise, it may take longer once you know what to expect and can plan ahead.
Haha.. I've watched this before my first ever game - I've bought Armada expansions to complement this game.. I've started undercoating and painting this game in preparation for the end of our Lockdown here in Melbourne, to game with my mate when he gets time off from work. I love that the 5 reasons are here, but I am still very much looking forward to playing! Well done guys. Keep up the great work and reviews/critiques.
I've owned this one for years and I've only got it to the table twice. I should sale it but the younger me doesn't want to let the nostalgia go. so on my shelf I sits. never picked up the expansion. maybe I can and surprise myself with it
I play this game a lot with different friends and we all love it. The base game is awful compared to the expansion though. The expansion completely changes combat from being a mind numbing slog to fairly interesting - although that being said combat is still the weakest part of the game. The new cards & heroes really spice the game up and i've yet to play a game that felt similar to a previous one.
I love star wars, but... I bought War of the Ring a year ago and still have yet to get someone to dedicate time to play it, many "oh yeah we should" but no scheduled day for it, and I will not buy any big 2 player asymmetric war games after that.
This is one of my favorite games of all time. The only downside for me is that I don't get to play it as often as I would like. Here's hoping a 2.0 comes along with an included Droid to play against whenever the mood strikes me. Insta buy for me!
Love the episode and the game. Just need to point out, landing troops on the ground and losing a battle in space makes sense and happens in SWRO. But fully agree it takes a lot of time and is quite clunk the battle. But at least in my “head” makes sense! Hehehehe
Right? Like, why wouldn't it make sense? Thematically, it would be fairly difficult to prevent your enemy from landing troops on something the size of the planet, especially with Star Wars technology. Mechanically, I like it because it gives the attacker a chance to see how well the land battle is going while they decide if they want to retreat or not.
Because time is such barrier for Rebellion I bought Liberation (and the Warped World expansion) on PNPArcade. It’s got the same feel but much more accessible. My buddy and I played numerous times in an hour.
When I first read the title I thought it was saying '5 reasons not to play Star Wars Rebillion with Derek', as in like he's a really bad loser or something.
This is easy!!! My favourite game of all time is twilight imperium 4, and I can give you 10 reasons why you shouldn't play it. In no particular order: 1. Length, if you think Rebellion is long, ti4 is 3x longer. 7-10 hours for your first playthrough easily. 2. If you want to chill out and not take things seriously and fool around with space risk. Because this game is so long, you might ruin it for other people who do want to play to win. 3. If you like everything streamlined without lots of stuff to remember. There's a lot of timing windows and special finicky rules in ti4. 4. If you don't like geeky themes like fantasy or sci fi. 5. If you dislike conflict and people breaking deals. This is an inevitability in ti4 and you'll get upset. 6. If you think getting a rule wrong ruins the gaming session and/or is a big rules lawyer. You'll most likely get a rule wrong because there's so many interactions between rules. Even Dane the designer gets rules wrong and rely on fans and changes his mind on rules ruling. 7. If you dislike negotiations. At the end of the day ti4 is political and involves deal making. 8. If you're overly competitive and thinks getting ganged up on and king made against is unfair. Once again, this game is highly political. 9. If you are prone to analysis paralysis. This game is already too long, you'll make it really bad for everyone and be overwhelmed with the choices and randomness. 10. This brings me to #10 - if you hate randomness and prefer perfect information. I can probably name more but this is just off the top of my head and took like 5 minutes to write.
I came to think that tracking damage could be solved by creating a printable PDF record sheet. Since damage does not go up and down, using a recordsheet where you fill circles when ships are damaged, as if it was a form, would avoid the tracking problem with tokens. What do you think?
Sounds like a great idea. Fan created solutions often become changes in games if they solve problems. Put it out there on BGG and see what the community thinks. -West
The game is so long that I only play it during Big Holidays aka mostly gets played 1-2 over December break for me....yet I absolutely love this game and my other half is a fan even with it's win so likely will never leave the collection :)
I'm retired so having a boardgame that takes hours to play is fine, we also play alot of eclipse 2nd edition as both are great for two players, their are so few really good two player games that keep me coming back time and again, I recommend painting the minis if you have the time and skill, as it really enhances the experience.
For me, a long game is not at all a downside... sometimes it is even a quality I want in a game. Some people would prefer to play several 30 minute games over one long 3 hour game, but I am the one who tends to prefer the longer, grander, meatier games. Maybe it is because I grew up playing old-school wargames or something. I'm just used to long games... even all-day games. lol Yeah, all-day games are not something I do as often as when I was a kid, but I try to get several games of TI4 in each year still with my usual group... we just make a Saturday of it. :-)
@@KabukiKid I would purchase TI4 as I adore 4x games, but finding a group here in Spain where I live is difficult especially during a pandemic, so o went with Rebellion and Eclipse 2nd edition, both play well with two players.
The only reason I don't own this game (and everytime I see it I'm tempted to get it) is that I know I'll never get it to the table. Unfortunately the game is too long for my game group.
"I bet an app with a Star Wars IP takes a lot more negotiation to get done than a board game where you already have the licensing for it" - Imperial Assault begs to differ 😄. I've always liked to look at the probe aspect of the game as another level of involvement for the Empire player. It would be easy to cross out systems from a handheld map or tick off drawn systems in an app. But if all you have is cards and your mind, then you need to be a little more careful. And yes, there are fan apps for Rebellion helping with both base checking and producing units.
I just have a laminated map that the Imperial player can just mark up with a dry erase marker as they play... with a cover to keep it hidden from prying rebel eyes. ;-) An app would make it easy too, but I know me and I'd still use the physical map instead.
I love this game hands down my favorite board game I’ve played it way too many times and I agree with a lot of points I think if you are not big in Star wars but enjoy board games I think you can still enjoy the game I’m on the same ship with the dude in the Star Wars shirt
Sorry for english. That's my favorite tabletop game. Like ever. Yeah there is flaws but its still one of the best experiences that i had and i can say more, i get interested in tabletop games and table RPGs because of this game and how immersive it can be.
Rebellion is my favorite game as well but WOW I see you with that incredible, legendary, iconic Star Wars Epic Duels game in the background 👏👏👏👏 That game was THE game for my game group from 2002 to 2012. The amount of homebrewing we did kept it alive and vibrant for over a decade! (Really cool to see the spiritual successor Unmatched continuing on its legacy!)
There's two reasons why I never got this: 1. It seemed like every group that played it asked the same questions, like "Who did you put in Corbonite?" or, "Who did you make a Jedi Master?" It seemed like every group played through the same beats. 2. Related to number 1. If everyone is playing through the same beats, is there enough there to have a different experience? Sure you can make the game easier or harder for yourself by choosing a farther or closer planet for the Rebel Base, but this seems like a game that gives your that magic story only once. If that's the case, then I feel like I'd only pull this game out if I could teach at least one new person to play it.
@@derekfunkhouser364 That's good to hear. It's Star Wars, so it naturally peaked my interest. For example, I prefer Xia, but I still picked up Outer Rim. 😃 It's been so long since I hunted down info for this game, those were the two examples that I remembered offhand. There were more, but I don't remember what they were anymore. It just felt like within one game you would encounter everything and the only difference was which character encountered it and when.
I looooooove this game. This is the first (and so far, only) game that I bought a third party insert for... I also got the Meeple Realty one, btw. This is definitely a case where the insert gets the game setup quickly and also just keeps everything nicely organized. I also got an extra set of dice just to halt the passing of dice back and forth across the table non-stop. lol Not necessary, of course... but just more convenient. :-) I wish FFG would just sell the dice; I ended up getting them from someone who apparently must have parted out a copy of the game or something. As for the combat, I never hated it as much as many seem to, but the expansion is quite excellent and fixes those worries. Not a cheap game to get.. with expansion... and with insert... but I rated this one a perfect 10 on BGG (even before there was an expansion) and it will never leave my collection. Easily one of my all-time favorites. Very much worth the price... and worth the game length. :-)
I think this is better than legion besides for everything including expansions is like 180$ compared to legion where a pack of 5 troops is 46$ that’s insane
Bought both eclipse 2nd edition and rebellion for Xmas 2021, we love eclipse so much we haven't played anything else inc rebellion, rebellion will have to be some game in order to beat eclipse, and I'm a massive SW fan, especially the original movies, I remember seeing the original on cinemas in 77, so I will definitely play it, ( currently painting the minis, sooo many ) but seriously eclipse 2 has so impressed me.
We love this game and that's why it doesn't bother us if a play takes more than 3 hours. (some groups play this game in under 3 or even 2 hours so it depends like so often also on the players). Many great games can take over 3 hours (Terraforming mars, TI, arkham horror, scythe, wow etc.) and they are great anyway or we love them and so the long play time is a good thing. And not all of us know the star wars universe that well but we love this game anyway. And we like the gameplay and also both sides are interesting to play. And even just the base game is cool and yeah the expansion makes it more tactical. So like so often the opinion about a game is very subjectively. So I wouldn't suggest anybody not to play this game because I think the playtime is too long or you have to know the star wars story that well.
It's nice seeing a critical view of this game as I've only ever seen good things. I think the play time is probably the biggest killer for my play group.
I've sold my star wars rebellion because it's simply too much of an effort to put on the table. It's a great game, and I do miss it in my collection, but I'm not seeing myself playing it. :/
Obviously the empire wins, they have 3 death stars and a pile of executioner class ships. I give up. Joking aside what’s an alternative game that does it better? I’m very interested in this game but the play time is a big negative.
I think Rebellion does it very well, it's just that you need to play with a bit of strategy. If you try to direct head-to-head the Empire as the Rebellion obviously it's not going to work. Your job is to weaken the Empire, force it to make tough decisions, misdirect, and accomplish enough to pressure it into defeat.
Lol...1.length?..if you play twilight imperium or eclipse you got the time....theme is a problem in every game if you dont know the characters lol...its not a perfect game but it is fun for sure!
Hmm, Jesse, you're doing this wrong! I'm trying to scrounge my meager 120 CAD together to buy this beautiful game someday, and here you go making it MORE difficult! Not helpful! 😭😭😭
Is there scope to shuffle in some "House Rules"? in to make the sour points a bit sweeter. Perhaps that could be the subject of a future video because I really like the look of this game and I'm a Star Wars nut. And a gaming nut. I'm a bit of a puritan though, I don't think games should come with apps. At least they all should be workable without. I mean I'd hate for the Zombie apocalypse to descend on my street and now half of my games are useless. That would be the worst!
Great series and video. This is one of my most disappointing games I own. We've played it two player and four player, had long games and extremely short games (e.g., I won on 3rd turn). I understand why it's so popular and liked, but since I haven't played it in over a year I really need to sell it.
Or a fun review that (like all RUclips videos and channels) would love to have people click on it. Instead of dying on the algorithm. Go buy a pony and criticize it for not being a horse.

It's been so long since I hunted down info for this game, those were the two examples that I remembered offhand.
Bruh, be happy none of the Disney madness made it into this game to corrupt it.
Why are your arms so tiny Derek
Fair and reasonable
@@derekfunkhouser364 you have to use weights with the movements though...
Quack!
Quack!
That's a great series!!
Oh man! And why didn't you tell what upgardes for SWR yo have?! Great video anyway!
Skipping whole video. Dont want the game to be ruined for me.
XD nice
Obviously the empire wins, they have 3 death stars and a pile of executioner class ships. I give up.
Joking aside what’s an alternative game that does it better? I’m very interested in this game but the play time is a big negative.
@@derekfunkhouser364 yeah I don't expect there is. I am also a pretty avid SW fan so that is a big plus for me.
Hahahaha this game is awesome. Gonna check and see how this thing shakes out 😅
Lol...1.length?..if you play twilight imperium or eclipse you got the time....theme is a problem in every game if you dont know the characters lol...its not a perfect game but it is fun for sure!
Glad your liking the new series!
Fuck you this game is Amazing
Poor Derek LOL
The reason I will never buy and probably never play this: It's a very long two player game.
And this is why its beatiful. You buy colossal amount of content and playing time
My copy with expansion has been left unplayed for years thanks to this video. Thanks for telling me this game sucks.
This smells to me like an attempt to push controversy for clicks.
Or a fun review that (like all RUclips videos and channels) would love to have people click on it. Instead of dying on the algorithm.
Go buy a pony and criticize it for not being a horse.
