What's the nubbin on your board?

  • I get asked this one quite a bit - so here is the explanation.
Go google anti-cavitation plate. You'll find them on all outboard engines.
The first ever session I had on the FD I didn't bother securing the cable and was horrified at how much the prop cavities - it was almost unusable.
Then I taped it and it was much better but still noisy and needed to be buried if you were expecting max thrust..
So then I did some research and this was the result.
Made with 2 thin sheets of G10, a carbon plate and some epoxy :-)
    marginal gain, but worth keeping!

This anti-cavitation would be more efficient, being btw the propeller and the foil, imo, since the propeller generates a real cavitation.

The air surface interaction is a ventilation, nope a cavitation, but being more downward, it could stop it too as well..

Very true on the definitions, but it's air on the prop either way and stopping as much as you can makes it quieter and more efficient. It's not a massive difference, but it all helps, and I hate the noise it makes.. like a nice quiet ride :-)

Very cool. I’m thinking of printing up a new motor mount now that has the plate built in and covers the wire custom to my preferred mast.
