Why the (normal) ALFA ROMEO GIULIA is a Sedan like no other 🇮🇹 (english vid)

  • Ciao, I am Luca, a Journo from PiediPesanti, a RUclips automotive channel and blog from Italy 🇮🇹
    A lot has been said about the Italian sport Sedan #Giulia that is bringing back #AlfaRomeo to life (and to RWD), especially about the 2.9 V6 510 hp Quadrifoglio.
    But what about the "normal" 2.0 280hp #Veloce AWD? How much does it cost to own? Is it reliable?
    I try to respond to your questions in our first video in english.

    Great video Luca. Regarding fuel consumption on long journeys - I recently did a relaxed drive across France in my 2018 Veloce with very little hard acceleration, mostly in 8th gear - which of course is overdrive. 40 miles per gallon was easily achievable. On quiet roads in England, staying below 70 mph, 42 mpg is possible. Of course high mpg is not the purpose of this car. In normal mixed driving on England's slow and busy roads 36-38 mpg is the normal consumption if it's not driven hard.
    This Veloce is a truly brilliant car, with 0 - 60 mph times very similar to a 4 litre Maserati or a 5 litre Mustang, whose fuel consumption is of course vastly greater. Top speed of 150mph is also similar. A low weight of 1400 kg is part of the reason - those aluminium panels really make a difference. The perfect balance of the car is another factor in its fabulous handling and driveability. The sheer joy of driving this beautiful car is expressed very well in this excellent review. Many thanks.

    I am in Canada. In the early 1990s I had an Alfa Romeo 164L. It didn’t like the snow, it didn’t like the rain, sometimes overheated, but I LOVED driving it - it was a manual. I am now seriously thinking about getting a Giulia. I would like to have it as a kind of a retirement gift to myself…

    I needed to replace my Ford Edge and fortunately my wife reminded me that we had been in the Alfa store to have her 500 Abarth serviced and that we should look at Alfa's. We drove out with a Ferrari red Stelvio and I could not be happier. The design is beautiful, especially the front aspect, and I love the performance and the fuel mileage. Never mind that I am 93.6 % Italian (23 and me). I have owned 4 Merdeces and 5 Porsches the latest being a 996 Twin Turbo. Alfa makes a great car!

    I always loved the way Alfa Romeo made the Giulia. The car was built beautifully. I sat in the giulia at the Orange County Auto Show in anahein California and the seats were very comfortable and I also loved the way they also had put in those huge bull horn paddle shifters. One day this year I'll buy one of my own.

    Nice video. I have owned two Giulia 2.0 280hp in the US. First was a 2017 drove it to 100,000 miles and now have a 2022. Both were (are) daily drivers. A couple of things I noticed are the quick steering ratio (as the reviewer mentioned), 32-33 miles per gallon on the highway traveling 70 miles per hour, the placement of the engine (it's weight / inertia) nearly 100% behind the front axle (check where Audi positions the engine), the carbon fiber driveshaft, the ZF transmission which holds high revs upon and right after hard acceleration assuming you'll want to mash the pedal again plus slightly downshifts on declines to help save brakes. The hood is light aluminum and this car is perfect for long 80-83 mile per hour cruises even if there are steep hills.

    Hi, thanks for the english video, appreciate it a lot, I look forward to more of the stuff like this. • @luca__2649
      @luca__2649  3 года назад +6

      Hi Peter! thanks for stopping by!
      It depends a lot about your average milage and cost of fuel. Here in Italy the gas engine is also charged with the "superbollo" (supertax) because is above 250hp. The 210 diesel it is really pleasant in highway driving due to the powerful torque. at 130km/h (italian legal speed) it runs 16/17kms with 1 liter diesel while the gas 280hp can go up to 13 km with a liter. The diesel can be also very funny in tight corners as with all that torque tends to oversteer almost immediately while the gas is a bit more tricky. Two great engines, in the end: in my personal opinion if you drive more than 25,000kms per year (and gas is more expensive) maybe you could consider the diesel, otherwise i'd personally go for gas. 💪🏻

    • @Sam-W
      @Sam-W 3 года назад

    Hello Luca, you are totally right about the standard 2 liter Giulia. I love mine, and it doesn't even have the paddle shift. It is an amazing car, I hate to stop driving it. The best car I have ever owned. The Quadrifoglio would only mean trouble...505 horse power doesn't make sense on public roads...you just can't use the car's potential But the standard Giulia is perfect. Love your video. Thank you.

      I have finally tested a QV and it was too extreme for me. A bit too uncomfortable for a daily driver. Brembo brakes took 20 min to warm up and get a gradual feel. Really more of a street-legal racing car. Veloce is a much better driver. Less torque, ok, but with 8 gears and a quick transmission you feel quick enough.

    Had to laugh when you said the most annoying thing was the start-stop... So relatable. Can be 'fixed' with a chiptune though, my start-stop magically stopped working.
    Had a 147 1.9 JTDm, which was fun to drive, and while the handling was a bit quirky and tricky, it was still a ton of fun. It was pretty reliable but had a lot of cosmetic issues (squeaks and rattles only only months after buying, leaking glue in the interior after a few years, armrest failing, ...) - but nothing serious, until the gearbox tore itself apart after 360k km.
    The 2.0Giulia however is leagues ahead of it and has been super reliable, very solidly build, now have driven it for 2 years with 40k km on the clock. It is just an absolutely brilliant daily driver. Also got the 2.0l for taxation reasons, and the original 200bhp was holding it back, but the chiptune brought it to 280/300bhp (it's the same engine) really made it come to live, and it's more than enough for a daily driver.

      Ciao Jacopo. (ma sei italiano?) 'course you can deselect the start and stop system by the dedicated button on the left side of the steering wheel! :) (there is no strange question whatsoever!) Comparing the Golf to a Giulia is quite impossible. I love the Golf but RWD is always RWD. Another world, another story. The steering of the Alfa is just beyond everything else and the joy of driving given by this machine is difficult to achieve with almost anything else. Having said that, Golf R is faster. I'd personally go for the Giulia because is RWD architecture.

Resto dietro alla colonna B. Idem all’entrata!
