🌠🚂Hi and welcome to Aidan's Railways🚂🌠
✅1st: My channel is aimed at adult model makers and collectors of railway related models.
✅2nd: My channel also covers visits to railways around the U.K. in various gauges.
✅3rd: My channel also covers events that myself and my brother attend in relation to his classic car collection.
✅ Aidans railways is a channel where i shall bring you reviews of railway related models, the construction of various layouts in different gauges (OO, OO9, N, O & G).
✅For years i have collected models, locomotives, rolling stock and scenery with the plan to build Aidan's Railways.
✅I have used the term "Railways" because there will ultimately be more than one railway and in various gauges.
✅I have a real passion for railways and model making.
💖So follow me as i go through reviewing my stock, New Purchase's, Constructing the Railways and getting Inspiration from our Days out and visiting railways and related locations💖
This model was purchased from Durham Trains Of Stanley.

The greatest enjoyment I get from model/toy trains is finding and repairing old locomotives. Cant afford new stuff so thats what I do. Nice find for you, well done and thanks for sharing. Nice looking model too.
I totally agree. I find it very therapeutic fault finding and repairing model’s. also get great satisfaction from it too
Totally agree with you there. There's no better buzz than getting a cheap non-runner and stripping it down, servicing and repairing it and getting it running well again! I bought a green Triang 31, D5572 from my local second hand shop for £10. He had sold it at £30 and the buyer brought it back cos it wouldn't run, so I took a chance on it and it was the filthiest internally that I've ever seen. I thoroughly cleaned it before servicing it and now I have a good runner. Now looking for more to do! I really enjoy it.
Yes, there is indeed something very therapeutic and cathartic about bringing older models back to life, especially when they look as good as these old Mainline models.
I had the Mainline Warship, dating from around 1978/79. How durable is the magnetic strength of the magnet in the motor bogie? I had an example and after only 3 years from new the model ran very poorly, slow and low power, still under warranty it was sent for repair and returned in full working order. I suspect they remagnetised the motor in the bogie
Hi Aidan, I have the same model D823 it wouldn’t at all I stripped it down to the bear bones , I now have it running quite well until I put the boogies back on then everything stops. Am I missing something . Thanks Alan
Hi Alan. I honestly couldn't say without actually being able to see the model my self. Really sorry
No problem thank you 😊
Thanks for putting this up, very helpful in my dismantling of Kelly the BR Blue version (who also had a driver in the cab). Just one point, mine too had the light only working at one end. I realised that the green wire at the dummy boogie side was attached to the wrong red wire. After unsoldering and re-soldering to the other red wire it worked fine.
Glad it helped! Thank you for getting touch
The driver in the cab is factory fitted.
Hi, that is great to know. It's a shame that more manufacturers don't do this as standard. Thank you
thanks for a great video
Glad you liked it!
Nice job Aidan, well worth a fiver glad you didn't hack it up 👍
_Thanks 👍_
I have fashioned some phosphor bronze and made pickups for the power bogie too, much improved running now.
Hi Nigel, Brilliant!😀👍
Hello Aidan, I think that this is a very good instructional video on how to repair ( from the comments below ) a common problem with Mainline Warships, ( a slipping wheel on axle is another recurring problem ). In your case, D823 Hermes, had broken wires due to poor soldered connection. With all due respect, and bearing in mind your difficulty in re-soldering the detached wires ( Richard Kessler's comment below is also helpful ) part of the problem could be the lack of slack in wire on sharp curves eventually causing the soldered connection to break., therefore consideration should be given to using an insulated plug & socket to attach the trailing, current collecting wires to the leading power bogie wires. As there is sufficient space within the chassis to accomodate the suggested plug&socket and associated wire from the trailing power collection bogie, this would resolve the problem of tight wiring, and also allow either the leading or trailing bogie to be removed without the need to unsolder any interconnecting wires. I also appreciate the warning about NOT over tightening the body to chassis screws, this is easily done ( do not ask how I know ! ). In the event over tightening does occur, you need to araldite in an appropriate sized nut to allow a bolt to hold it all together. Thank you for a very good, and informative video, with greetings from Australia.
Thank you Philip. I must confess this episode was made some time ago and the loco has not seen much use in that time. It may be time to revisit this model and possibly make some mods to it. Cheers Philip
Hi Aidan. Just wanted to thank you for this video, as I used it to help me with an identical problem. I purchased a VGC, boxed, BR Blue example in working order, for £20. I decided to service it prior to running it, at which point those pesky wires fell off!
Having watched your video for the first time prior to buying the loco (I wanted to find out whether purchasing a Mainline Warship was worth the risk), I knew exactly where to look for guidance when I encountered the problem.
I am very happy with my Mainline Warship. It has provided me with a very cost-effective way of adding a member of this class to my fleet.
Cheers,
Stephen
Just found your channel, nice job. Odd how they used a power bogie housing in the trailing. The 45 wasnt like that. What I might have done soldering wise would have been with new wire, then poke the tails up through the hole, then join them mid way to the existing then covered the join with heat shrink. Gives yourself more room and removes the risk of accidentally melting any part of the frame
Thanks 👍
Great video . Hope you keep it or sell it on as is. This shows how far back the current Bachmann warship tooling goes. Some components are still being used and they got the mileage out of those moulds!
Hi Alan and thank you for watching. Yes I do believe I shall keep this one. I will look out for another to use for the project this was intended for. After such a simple fix seems wrong not to keep it. Yes Bachmann have certainly had some use from those mould’s 😆
nice model - it looks comparable to the Lima warship in terms of detail although it looks the Mainline one is slightly better. Although is that horizontal line near the base of the body slightly too deep/pronounced?
From what I understand has or had been using this tooling for quite some time since acquiring it. It's not a bad model and runs quite well. Cheers
Wow Aidan, very interesting and informative. Because I have exactly the same Mainline Class 42 in maroon named Hermes. Bought like new and very good running from a collector. Cheers Norbert
Brilliant. We have many similar items
Just found your channel subbed 😀
Great 👍. Thank you 😀
When I bought mine many years ago it had driver and second man in the cab, I assumed it was factory fitted (I might be wrong) mine is BR Green, I should try and use it more on my model railway club's layout :)
Hi there. It may be that they were as standard. Since filming I have heard from others that theirs also have a crew fitted. Food for thought with manufacturers I think 🤔
Mainline catalogue 1981 days the model includes the driver
Says
Hi um I need some help with my mainline class 45 as one of the bogies are half out its socket and it doesn't move at all so If u could help please do
Doesn't matter now I went to a repair shop and it turns out 50% of the trains insides were missing
All i could really do is refer to this video for some guidance. However there are a many groups on Facebook where you can post pictures of the offending item and get greater insight from people within the group. Without images it is very hard to guide you. sorry but i hope this helps
Interesting and useful too as I've just dug out a Mainline class 45, which looks like a really good model and which seems to have a very similar design chassis and motor to your Warship. And I can already see some wires have become unsoldered as in yours. But it's quite a different chassis and motor design from the Triang, Hornby and Lima diesels I've serviced before. So before I give it a service it's good to watch someone else doing it on a video. You didn't show the motor being serviced i.e. cleaning commutator, oiling bearings etc. Did you make another video showing that or is there one online somewhere? Sam's Trains has done a service video for mainline 4-6-0 steam locos but the motor in those look quite different from the motor in the Mainline diesels.
Hi Steve. It has been a while since I made this video. If I remember correctly when I made the video it was more of a repair fault finding video. I have not actually serviced it as when repaired it seemed to run really well. Maybe in the future as it requires a service I will do a video covering it.
Thank you for getting in touch.
Cheers
I am thinking about getting two Class 42 warships for my Layout
Hi Lewis👋. Great.
I would like to have one in each livery eventually. Cheers 👍
@@AidansRailways my pleasure looking forward to your Next video cheers.Lewis : )👍
Thank you Lewis , don’t forget in the meantime to check the channel page where there are many more. Thank you again 👍
@@AidansRailways a bit off topic but I have thought about one day getting a Small car and take out the original engine and fit a Merlin V12 engine in the car and a Merlin engine is larger than the car I am going use which will mean that I have to modify the car slightly in order to get the engine in and my aim is to get the car in the guiness book of world records and I am going challenge a bugatti veyron owner and he or she may think my car does not stand a chance but if you've seen top gear where they used a stock transit van and raced it against a Holden maloo pickup and the transit ended up winning whilst transporting a jaguar turbocharged engine in back of the van
Yeah you’ll have to do some serious mods.
We used to put much bigger engines into small hatchbacks when I was younger and they needed a lot of mods structurally
Good job but if you had just pushed up the bogie assembly, inserted screw then soldered wires you wouldn’t have had to struggle with short wires as they end up in the same spot anyway
Hi Les, thank you for the great advice. Cheers
Great video Aidan I have a mainline warship in br blue
Cheers David. I had not intended to fix this one but to cannibalise it for another project. But when I took it apart and saw what was wrong it seemed wrong not to fix it. I did see a boxed blue mainline Warship at the shop last week for £20 and nearly picked it up 😆. Does yours run well?
Aidans Railways yes it runs well it has 1 light though because the other a wire has come out dope the bulb and I don’t think it can be fixed but I don’t mind
Bought mine s/hand many years ago. Awful runner and sounded terrible. Gave up stripped out motor and it double heads with my Lima and Bachmann Warships. Detail is good for it's time(better than Lima) but wheels are fine scale and can cause problems.
I've got the same model ,bought off ebay for thirty pounds, ripped off wouldn't run ,seller refunded ,kept loco, stripped it the large cog had slipped out of position in motor reset it ,still wont run
Hi John. I picked mine up at the model shop (Durham Trains Of Stanley) as a non runner with the intention to use it for another project but after repairing it very easily i chose to keep the model in its current state. If you are finding it hard to get your motor running ,Ebay have stacks of these motor bogies online and very cheaply. I have to say i have been very lucky on Ebay as i have not really had any issues with items i have bought (usually fitting the description given) If i have bought a non runner its usually for a reason (repair or parts)
