    I'm having nightmares with highflyer! It's a ticker! New gears, still ticking. Love these mainline warships, I have 4. Good video.

    I've always admired the Mainline Warships. Great models that stand-up well today. A real shame that Mainline 'shut up shop' back circa 1982 as they were ahead of the game detailing-wise. The motors are, perhaps, a little fragile, but with regular servicing, they should keep going. In fact, I've recently picked up both the green and maroon versions (sold as non-runners) and with a good service and diode and bulb replacement (+ a little bit of soldering), both now run very well. Still a bit 'clattery', but still good enough for me. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to seeing more videos soon!

    Hi Sam , this class 42 is one peculiar looking diesel although it is obvious that it was from the German V200 design were it came from . Not quite sure I would call it lovely , quirky more like . Good review as usual ......Peter.

      Peter Shaw Yeah, it's quite a weird looking loco, I'm quite fond of the shape and livery though! :D

    I've always wanted a western! I was blown away by the level of detail your model had despite its age. Looking forward to seeing the new camera. -Mitchell

      Mitchell Thomas Thanks for the comment - I think this one was quite inexpensive on ebay and as you say, is pretty good for what it is! :D

    Just watched as I have just repaired the same locomotive .Poor running and clonking on mine was caused by one of the final drive gears on the axle just spinning round with a chunk missing. New final drive gears can now be bought on ebay from ASIS3D . its running much better. I like how it lights up.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 года назад

      Thanks Paul, yes mine used to do the exact same thing - very well done for fixing yours! I ended up scrapping mine entirely, as the plastic bogie chassis had warped :/
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

      GWR23 Studios Cool, thanks! She's a very dodgy runner though - needs about 5 minutes warm up before she runs properly :)

    The couplings are the hook and loop couplings Lima use on ho gauge stock but you can swap the whole bogie for the ones with suitable large tension lock ones with they would have to be Lima, also those are the Dutch coaches

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  8 лет назад

      Hi, thanks very much for the info! The couplings aren't too bad with those, and they don't cause any de-railments when coupled to the large D couplings, so I think I'll leave it as it is!
      All the best,
      Sam :)

      Was it just your mainline model the had a motor issue or is this the case for all br 42 warships made by mainline? (I wanted to get one as the detail is just stunning compared to hornby's version).

  • @ollieahokas9179

    Two things, these engines are British version of West German V200 class, even the body reminds of them though modified to the English railroads and the second thing, if a electric or Diesel has electric drive, as most of the modern ones, they are either Bo Bos or Co Co.s depending on the number of axles that are driven. But this one is hydraulic, so it is a B´ B´

    Is this made from the same material as the earlier triang stuff was where the shells warped or is it made from polystyrene? Also how does it run? I have a 1979 Kelly model from mainline

    hi sam ! just a bit of info as you were unsure of the age of the loco ? i have exacly the same model "highflyer" got mne around early 80's (82-83 i think ?) and as far as i know mainline as a brand was discontinued by the mid to late 80's so your loco is looking pretty good for around 35 years old ! :)

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 года назад

      Duly noted Kim - yes that sounds like it could be about right - it looks like an early 80s loco!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    Picked one up donkeys years ago in a junk shop. Good looking model for its age but the motor/mechanism was terrible so removed it. Now a dummy and is pushed by my Lima or Bachmann Warships as a double header like they did on the Devon Banks.

    Just tried to get mine running again by borrowing bits from another I bought cheap that had a split gear. Unfortunately the gears or something seem too tight, the motor will run but overheats rapidly - would grease help please? If so, what sort? Thanks - great to see yours running well, but did make me a little green after todays failure!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 года назад +1

      Hi John - I had exactly the same problem - tried to fix mine with parts, never could! I also found that the actual plastic chassis had warped too, meaning that the gears didn't mesh correctly! I've now scrapped mine for parts - good riddance to a horrible mechanism!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    Nice running session there Sam. I think your Mainline class 42 has the edge on my pair of Lima's....they don't have the lighting either. Enjoy your weekend trip & I'll catch up with you next week. Best, John. PS. What you doing with the old camera? lol

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  9 лет назад

      chambs123 Thank you very much- I'm thinking of exchanging the bulbs with LEDs and throwing in a cap for improved performance! Thanks, I'll look forward to next week :)
      I hope to still use the old camera for non-close up shooting (if it survives) its just the close ups that its struggling with (you might notice I haven't been able to get as close to locos recently!)
      Thanks again,
      Sam

    What was with the slightly derailed goods train? Some of the Smith's Vans were tipped up and one had come off the track. You could have chosen a better steamy to show in the background. Get rid of that ugly P2, or I'll give you what for. The diesel sounded like a helicopter with worn rotor-blades. The only thing I really liked was the HST, which sounded like itself and ran more smoothly. That's all I'll say.

    • @SamsTrains
