  • Paul Natkin has made a career photographing some of the biggest stars in music. His work has been feautred in Rolling Stone magazine, Newsweek and Spin. He first worked with Keith Richards' on the 1988 Expensive Winos tour to support the album Talk is Cheap. He then joined on during the Steel Wheels tour as their official tour photographer, later also working with them during the Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon tours. Join me as I sit down with the great Paul Natkin!

You got that “eye of a hurricane” feeling if you had an onstage seat during the 2005 tour. We were lucky enough to have onstage “booths” in Moncton. You could really feel the energy and the noise of the crowd. It was a totally unique experience.

Fabulous interview with a talented and fun bloke!
One thing few people talk about is just how damn photogenic the Rolling Stones have always been, from the early years with Brian right up to now (Andrew Loog Oldham knew what he was doing when he removed the decidedly unphotogenic Stu from the line-up!). Other bands might've been more conventionally handsome, but they never looked quite as good as The Stones!

Thank you Peter! I totally agree. The camera loves them. Throw in the fashion and it's a dangerous combination. They had something extremely special!

Justin, excellent discussion with a man who has an incredible eye for taking pictures - really super lovely photos of the band and especially of Keith and Charlie. Amazing! No wonder you model your own picture taking off Paul. I see Paul is credited in the Steel Wheels Atlantic City Box Set as one of the photographers.

In 1990, I got 4 original signed prints mounted on foam-core from Paul... my wife, who worked at a recording studio in Chicago got them as a christmas gift...3 from Steel Wheels of Charlie, Ron and Mick and a studio one of Keith from that session. My treasures!

@@HangFireStonesPodcast Yes, that's a rather nice picture of Charlie. Although the photo of the band from behind is lovely. Like you said not many photos like that showing them taking the final bow from behind. Infact,it may be the only one I know of. Makes it a rather unquie photograph in my book.

Great stories - great pictures - no personality.
    Just like the Stones want.
You don't say no to the Stones.
You only get on a stage between Mick and Keith in front of 80,000 people once.
I'd love to hear the aftermath of that stunt.
I bet Charlie backed him up on that one.
    What do you reckon?

Great interview!! Quick question for you and I don’t know if you know the answer, but since he did a lot of the x-pensive 39:23 winos photographs on Keith’s first tour in particular, do you know the photo that is at the center of the little photo book that comes with live at the Hollywood Palladium? You see a guy handing Keith a patch of a Rolling Stones tongue. That happens to be a friend of mine who always carried that patch with him and said he was going to give that patch to Keith. When he told us he had, no one really believed him until I opened up the booklet and saw it. Is that one of his photographs? If so, does he have that photo for sale?
