Is there a special tool required to push in the bushings on drives that have them?
Bushing Driver set
@halemarine5991 the little ones in the pinion carrier have to be set deep, I wonder if bushing driver that fits that hole in the HF set. We'll see
@FourthWayRanch Harbor Freight sell them
@halemarine5991 I got that set, 130 bucks, dunno if it was worth it, nothing for the 1" bushings. I had to cut them out with die grinder toilet, The HF bushing puller didn't work
My trans isn't spinning, just put new plates in it. I was thinking the pump might be bad but weird thing is it was working the last time the boat was in the water because I still had reverse but no drive. I've made sure nothing is clogged up and cleaned the whole thing out and I'm pretty positive I put everything back in it the way it should be. My pump has some minor scratches on it but doesn't seem that bad really. Still though I'm starting to believe the pump is the problem the more I think about it. Also have a problem with front seal blowing out, I'm guessing the control valve is causing that? Because I believe it's been getting hot too.
Definitely pump set for the other rotation if it is the case iron transmission
Could also be low pressure
I'm pretty sure the rotation was right as well. I could be wrong though I'll spin it 180 and see what happens!
What is the best fluid to run? Dexron III?
What direction is your flywheel turning? Reverse will apply with as little as 10 psi
Question for you: Why use Dex3 when Mobil 424 is required from velvet drive? V-drives
Right from the 1004,1005 service manual
Dexron lll, type F,
Great Videos Man! I have a question for you. I rebuilt my 72C Velvet Drive about 7 years ago. Last Weekend the pump seal failed catastrophically. Half the fluid drains in 5 seconds. The boat was running cruise speed and it was like it was pulled into neutral. I shut it down and got towed in. I have the full rebuild kit to replace everything. People are telling me to replace the seal and put in back in. I'm thinking is better to replace the clutches but I'm not a transmission expert. I would be very interested in your opinion. Thank You
I will post a video later today discussing this issue. It is common problem nowadays.
If it helps please go to my website halemarine.com and send me a donation through the QR code

@@halemarine5991I watched the new video. I greatly appreciate the explanation. Comments are turned off or I would have posted on that video. When would be a good time to give you a call? I want to confirm I'm looking at the right pump you mentioned and I have a question about the rest of the transmission. Thank you Sir

What is the model number of your transmission
Hey Chris! first of all, thank you for lively videos! We have a Marine "Borg-Warner VelvetDrive AS7-71C" when we put our transmission into reverse, everything is perfect and normal, but when we put it into forward it spins the shaft (slower than usually) and with little to no power (slipping or not engaging properly) to the point that I could stop the shaft from spinning with my hands
Does this mean that the forward clutch is warn and needs replacement in most cases?
Also do you have a video of how to put the forward assemble drum back together without a bench press?
Many thanks for your amazing videos!
Forward plates or internal leak. Like oring wore or
Sealing ring
Check out my video on my 1017-004 overhaul
Hey Chris, I started taking my no tagged 71c apart for overhaul. It has the 2.10 reduction with the oil return above the planetary. The large bearing the back of the 71C case is bad. I cant seem to find the part number for it as it has 13 ball bearings in it and the most I've seen from replacement websites is 12. The case is an earlier 2 bushing case. Thanks for any help you can give me. Also the Phenolic washer was solid metal and THICK. Should I replace the washer or keep whats in there since there was no wear on it
Hello
Can you send me a picture of the bearing and a picture of the housing it is located.
Send the pic to sales@halemarine.com
Best regards
Chris
Still need cores?
Yes
The whole country needs cores, cuz they ain't making em anymore. ☹️ They'd rather sell you a backwards volvo drive or a 12k lb outboard. 🤣
Hi I have a Velvet drive 1:1 AS1- 71c, red tag, serial number is 105456...
it only has 1 x reverse clutch disc, is that Normal? Rob
Yes
@@halemarine5991 tha ks ki day for the confirmation, be very well. Rob
Your welcome
What tool is that for spear headed circlops?
What transmission are you working on.?
@@halemarine5991 T72-1F, I posted videos of the disassembly on my vhannel

@halemarine5991 T72 - T18.
Do we need a special tool to push in the bushings?
@FourthWayRanch Bushing Driver set
How to know its a 70 or 71 serie without the tag?
In most cases the overall length of the transmission will tell what Series it is. Measure from where the transmission mounts to the engine back to the output coupling.
Ok i will do that.I bought the boat with a bad transmission it is a ski nautique 1979.The transmission goes in foward and reverse but when you put it in neutral the prop will stop spinning but if you rev the engine e little bit the will start spinning and will not stop.So in neutral you will stil move forward.I checked the selecter it works perfect with the cable.I shift in the neutral with the cable(direct on the trans shifter)and stil same issue.I red online that most posibel is clutch sticked together.Or the control valve.I bought a clutch set on skidim and i am planning on rebuilding it this weekend. How to check if the control valve works good? Thanks for the info
@@john-patricknuboer8060 I am pretty sure it's not the selector valve. The Forward Clutch Pack is bad .
Can a bad valve make a clutch pak go bad?And is the clutch pak the anything i would need to rebuild it?
@@john-patricknuboer8060 Clutch Pack failure is usually operator error. High speed shift or running a ground. Yes you must rebuild the clutch packs
Message: Hi there, I've been viewing your You Tube videos on 10 17 005
BorgWarner transmissions. I've been asked to refurbish the unit for my boss's
boat. He has supplied what appears to be a generic kit for the unit. . . I've
disassembled and upon rebuild the input shaft is stiff to turn after the
reverse clutch cover is tightened. This is tightened against the springs. I
cant remember if this spun easily before disassembly. Can you advise me please
?
The 1017 should have 2 Bronze and 1 Steel plate.
Thankyou. Yes I've replaced with new plates on the reverse clutch exactly as they came out. However should the unit turn freely after reassembly?
@@petegl581 Yes
Why is it that the lower snap ring in the forward clutch doesn't seem to fit into its appropriate groove? You suggest it's just a spacer. Is it necessary make this fit? The circlip just popped out during disassembly.
It is a Spacer
Yes like I said in the Video
