Seriously considering a SG Modern. I have an SG Standard and the SG '61 Reissue. I've started moving from Les Paul to SG guitars. They are just so much lighter.
12:40 i like that you mention that. It is really hard to explain to other people when we dont like guitars which significantly wider (widening?) necks, same issue with Ibanez guitars, really thin neck on the back, really wide if you are on the 15th fret, making it uncomfortable to grab somehow, the thumb ends on a really weird position (mid neck, almost horizontal) The only brand I have noticed has necks that dont go too wide on higher frets, are Yamahas😮
I purchased the 61 reissue and checked it out. The neck was really flimsy and seemed to bend back and forth way to easy not feeling sturdy at all. The guitar had a slight fret buzz on the E string I couldn't resolve. I sent it back and got the SG modern. The SG modern neck was much more stable and the pro burst bucker pickups sound awesome. The playability in my opinion is excellent but it did take about a week to get used to. The tones are incredible. Highly recommend this guitar. My opinion.
Boy that bridge just sounds AMAZING, the tone overall with the ( band ) behind you was AWESOME. Great description to call it a hybrid/ LP / SG. Pardon the pun on that you can't put your finger on the ( width 12th fret plus ) . Great review.
That is one damn beautiful SG. I think, if they are going to do an asymmetrical neck carve, they should slowly flip which end is thicker as they move down the neck. Fatter at the bass side up by the nut, and slowly working its way to thicker at the treble side as you go toward the bridge. It may give your thumb somewhere to sit comfortably.
Bought a SG modern in Blueberry for the burstbuckers but ended up loving that maple clarity and bite most. Compared to the SG Standard sound so crystal clear, but still growled like a SG should. Made the standard sound muddy. In this guitar the maple thick cap is really throwing something nice in the mix, back off the tone your back in SG standard territory. I have a huge amount of guitars vintage, custom shop- this is hanging up there with the best (to my surprise).
I own this guitar. Ordered it in 2019 when it was introduced. The figure on mine is much, much nicer imo. Love this guitar, but don't play it as much as some of the others in my collection. I can respect the overall score. I personally do appreciate the modern features
Have had a Blueberry Fade SG Modern for at least 6 months now, and it's probably gotten more play time than any of the guitars that I currently own. I absolutely love this guitar. That said, like you, I don't use the coil taps very much, if at all, but they're there if I want to use them. However, as far as playing the guitar and it feeling good in my hands I absolutely love it! Mine is actually heavier, I went for one a little over 8 lb in hopes of having a guitar with a bit better balance, and I definitely get that with the heavier model. I'll grant I haven't tried out one of 61 reissues, but I can't imagine liking the Vintage version better. But, like I said, I haven't tried one, so I can't definitively say that. Nonetheless, it's definitely in the top three, possibly higher, in my current collection. I absolutely love this SG! I also have a Les Paul Modern (Seafoam Green) and the ES Modern Supreme (Bourbon Burst) and if something were going to outrank the SG Modern in terms of what I own, it would be the ES Modern Supreme. However, that is a totally different Beast, so it's kind of hard to compare that to the SG. Just my $0.02.
U just gotta play B4 u buy many sh's don't have the dive. I got my SG standard a month ago and there is absolutely no neck dive. I can even walk around standing up no dive.
@@grapejuice2589 I agree...always best to play it first if one has the opportunity. You were lucky to get one with no neck dive, matter of fact it was miraculous.
These modern Gibson SGs are great! It's great that there is some guitar development and we don't need to use those 1960s type SGs forever! A lot of things in this world have improved since the 60s!
How is tuning stability with this on your center strings? I’m truly curious how stable as Gibson history we all know I wondered. Had they somehow corrected that with the nut design or any position movement of the tuners thanks again sounds like a stupid question but I have a lot of Gibson guitars, and I love this one. I think it’ll be great for the stage And I can’t wait to rock it. Thanks man. 2:316:21
I got one three years ago. Best guitar to play sitting down. Most uncomfortable guitar I've ever played standing up, too much neck dive. I traded for a LP, and never looked back. Add a bigsby, and it should be perfect. What happened to the tuners? They were locking Grover's and 24 frets when it came out.
I have the Epiphone version. My first SG and the neck is fantastic! It has totally turned me on to SG's! Coil tap is awesome too. I usually play it in p90 mode.
I fully understand you on the width beyond the 22th fret. . If you have the comparison of a '61 slim tapered neck from ,& down the 12th fret I love to hear from you..... Please in metric centimeters,; a lot more acurate than inches etc... . Greetz 🎸 from Holland 🇳🇱
I have no idea why people still try to compare this guitar to the Les Paul because it's two completely different guitars. Forget the history. It's a 100% different animal vs LP.
I bought mine in late 2021, it came with authentically shattered clear knobs. I emailed Gibson with a photograph and explanation of the authentic problem and they in turn asked me what my problem was and if I could send them a picture. No, you didn't read incorrectly, I told them the problem and provided evidence and they authentically asked in return if I had a problem. I now authentically do not do business with Gibson and Guitar Center authentically purchased the guitar from me.

Hi John, How does the SG Modern sounds compared to the ps s2 custom 24? My dilemma is I would like to have the les paul sound with the playability of a PRS, maybe the Gibson sg modern is the solution
Great Video, thank you Does the sound of the SG Modern lean more towards Les Paul or SG Standard? And which guitar would you prefer, Les Paul Studio or SG Modern?
Didn’t care for the coil taps other than it sounded like an acoustic in the middle with both taps engaged. I wish you would have demo’d taping just the neck and just the bridge in middle position. I hope to compare it with the Epiphone modern! Great review!
I ordered one blind because the specs on that look like it's my ultimate SG guitar, but sadly, the so-called medium jumbo frets were closer to feeling like a fretless guitar and I sent it back after playing it for 5 minutes as no setup in the world can fix that issue without a refret.
That is one beautiful SG it looks like a piece of glass on the top and bottom I would love to have to have one like that but it would take me a long time to same up my spare money for that, I not saying it's not worth that because you can clearly see it is but that's a little a bit of money for me to turn loose of right now. I wish you luck and best wishes my friend.
You can’t put your finger on why you can’t get your hand around the neck? Gibson needs to make more instruments that have 24 frets. What would be neat is if they follow this modern take on the SGI up with a similar take on the original 1961 version with three humbucking pickups and the full compliment of frets.
I just bought one of the blueberry fades over the weekend. I really like it - I would most likely never own an SG otherwise (not a fan of the classic look on them). I was already used to the neck though, having a 2018 Les Paul Std. HP with the same neck; that neck is an odd little duck and did take some getting used to at first. Lol, it's kinda the mullet of guitar necks, thick enough at the top to make cording comfortable if you throw your thumb over, and thin enough from the middle to the bottom of the neck for proper thumb placement when soloing 'shredder-style' (or wanna-be shredder in my case 😂). Take all of my positive appraisal with a huge heap of salt - outside of my stable of explorers, I'm more of an ESP and Jackson guy even though I don't really play metal anymore. The classic feel and vibe that Gibson offers in many of their models is lost on me.
