    Today we take a look at the NEW for 2019 Gibson Modern Collection "Modern SG." This guitar really took my by surprise. While it might look like just the same old HP High Performance SG that was offered earlier in 2019, these are VERY different spec wise when you get into the key details. To say they are the same, would be a complete insult.
    I really enjoyed this SG... except for the neck diving.

    Just as an update, the neck dive issue on this is just because they moved the strap button to the upper horn for some reason. I have this model and moved mine to the normal location and all is well with the world. They have corrected this fairly early on in production. And they also changed the tuners to lighter weight non locking ones. Though the locking tuners don't effect mine now that I moved the strap button.
    Over all, this one is a keeper for me!

    • @roberte03915
      @roberte03915 10 месяцев назад +1

      Aha. That would explain the contradicting information and confusion I've seen in some places about the strap button and locking vs. non-locking tuners.

    Looks like my dream SG!
    24 frets filling up that awkward space between neck pup and neck.
    Output jack on the bottom.
    Maple top is a surprise and I love the fade finish and most importantly - NO pickguard!
    Hope the whole is at least equal to the sum of the parts!

    As a metal guy, this is the only 2019 that really caught my eye. All 24 frets are pretty east to get at. The finish is a lil over the top. Give me a classic Cherry with a bat wing pick guard with the same specs... sold.

    • @unleashthefury111
      @unleashthefury111 5 лет назад +11

      Metal guy myself...cherry red and bat wing pick gaurd does not equal metal to me, it equals vintage/classic. They need to make this a little bit longer scale length

    • @BubbaZen10
      @BubbaZen10 5 лет назад +4

      Yeah, i think this looks more "metal" than the classic look too. Classic look in cherry pretty much equals Angus. ;)

    • @agras7494

      Unleash The Fury longer scale? I do not see any reason for that. 24,75 scale gives certain tone to guitar which in my opinion is more metal than longer scales have. Think Dimebag and many others. There are allready big collection of longer scaled guitars if you want strat or dj0ntstick tone. But that’s just my opinion.

    • @GameboyFanatic

      Maybe reverse the colors on the classic with these specs, nice black finish on the body with a rich red bat wing pick guard.

    Those last two frets really improve the look of the SG. The gap between the neck pickup has always bothered me (particularly on the small pick guarded SGs). It looks so good. The flamed maple top is also a nice fancy touch (I really don't understand why the modern Les Paul doesn't have a flame top.)

    Definitely among the greatest SGs I've ever gotten my hands on! My local music store held a Gibson 2019 preview about a year ago and I was blown away by the modern SG. The standards were definitely no slouch either. The Les Pauls weren't as great, though. Be that as it may, 2019 definitely is a great SG year judging by my experience!

      Brandon Ivey
      Lots of jazz guys playing 335 style guitars play sitting down thus the output jack being on the top instead of the side. If it’s on the top just get a 90 degree angle cable jack to reduce the chance of breaking something.

    I have a 2013 SG 61 Reissue. I love the way the guitar plays and sounds, but pretty much left it at home due to neck dive. Not anymore though, once I rectified the neck dive by 'doing the Mr Tony Iommi' ~ move the strap button to the top horn.

  • @HVA58

    Just got one of the blueberry fade ones, and it is absolutely gorgeous! Sounds great, and certainly has plenty of bite. Yes, the neck dive is a problem, but a nice suede or leather strap helps a whole lot.

    Picked up a 2018 lefty HP-2 about a month ago, best guitar I've ever played, really have bonded with it. Best part is I have no desire to change anything or tweak it at all, as I tinker with anything, but this thing has everything I could ever want on a guitar, locking tuners, titanium zero fret nut, titanium saddles, bad ass electronics, nothing to do but play it...

    You can very likely fix the dents in the ebony board by placing a water-soaked paper towel (folded a few times so the towel is thicker) on the dents and laying a hot soldering iron tip on the spots for a few seconds. The water will steam the wood and cause the dents to expand into bumps that you can lightly sand flat.

    Thank you for your detailed review of the Modern SG. I should be in a position to buy one in a couple of months. I bought a 1961 SG standard way back in 1974 and was basically a slave to it for many years in club bands. I gifted it to my granddaughter in 2011. I hope to become re-acquainted with The guitar but this time under better conditions.

    I've had the Epiphone version of this guitar for over two years. It's almost exactly the same and is a fantastic guitar completely stock, second hand for $400. It's not my main guitar. My mainstays are super strat, modern style guitars with hard tails and humbuckers. The SG is my roots blues guitar. I moved the strap button to the top horn tip to alleviate the neck dive. It resonates/sustains, rings loud unplugged, stays in tune and the Epi pro buckers sound great. This thing has some serious honk to it and gives me the down home Allman Bros vibe I wanted. Never letting it go.

      The sg hp is better ('more options) but bad tuning (it does not stay in tune)
      the bb pro's are decent with too much brightness and not so powerful like 498t
      the sh1 490r sound better for the beck (blues warm tone) so it's different here :tight and bright
      the stock action was too high
      what els e?
      but good dip switch

    Glad you like it. It’s a beautiful guitar for certain and all that matters is how much you like and play it. I think I’d prefer satin nickel on all my chrome pieces and 57’classics instead of BurstBuckers but that just my taste. The one thing that would be cool is if you want a neat trem system you should get the duesenberg les trem ii. It can be a little pricey in the US but it looks great and no drilling or permanent mods required. It’s literally plug and play

    Speaking of Richlite, I never knew what exactly it was until recently. It a form of Micarta. It’s layers of paper and epoxy resin. The stuff is damn near indestructible. They use various types of textile paper made just to make Richlite with. I’m familiar with it because Richlite and Micarta are most often used on high performance and custom knives. Like military and survival knives. It’s the best handle material there is. It actually gets more grippy when it’s wet.

    Love the spec on this one. The only things I would change out are the bridge/tailpiece (for heavier ones) and those clear knobs, not a fan of those at all. The tones are somewhere between an SG and a LP which I like a lot and then there are the split tones which give it an extra bit of diversity. I have to say, Gibson are on the right track.

  • @jubei7259
    @jubei7259 5 лет назад +3

    For the record, I love SG's so when I hear Gibson have made a pretty one, with a maple cap & ebony fretboard I'm interested. It looks like they've got just about everything right with the design of this one. I don't care for the coil split/tap nonsense (I'm yet to hear one that sounds any good) but I'm a bit picky with my guitars so if there are people that like them then hey, you do you. I'd still take the Pepsi challenge with this one against my '92 Standard though. I've played & owned a lot of them & although I've got a '61R that's pretty damned sweet, the '92 is the best SG I've ever played. I do think $2 Grand is a lot to pay for an SG however.

    Great review! I would absolutely love it if you would review the Epiphone version of this..the Epiphone Modern Figured SG which has a lot of the same features plus has the Peter Green “out of phase” switch as well as different humbuckers that do coil split. I’ve got one on order but it’s a couple months out so if you review and disapprove, I have time to cancel my order. I too am curious about the thickness of the maple cap and suspect that the figured portion may be a veneer. I’m hoping the total depth of the maple itself is similar to this Gibson. I think the maple kinda brightens up the tone. I can always darken the tone easily but I can’t brighten up a tone that starts off dark. Please review the 2020 Epiphone Modern Figured SG…

    Fantastic review and very thorough. I've yet to play one and was concerned about neck dive. Interesting that the neck is called a slim taper, but the measurements (0.85 at 1st fret, 0.95 at 12th fret) are the typical measurements of the Gibson rounded C neck profile like what is on the ES-335's. All of the slim taper necks that I have are typically 0.81 thickness at the first fret.

    always wish i didn't hate the horns. I love lightweight guitars, love gibson, and the SGs were played by the great Big Brother & The Holding Company on Cheap Thrills, one of the great guitar albums. The band later switched to Fender (sponsor) but those old psychedelic SG tones were incredible

    The split settings work surprisingly well with dirt.

    This is the best SG I've ever seen. They're good guitars and always have been but this is my favorite by a longshot

    That's beautiful. Reminds me of SG Supreme (maple top & 24 frets)

    I will DEFINITELY pick one of these up at the end of the year when guitar center will have these close to a grand b-stock.

      How likely is that? This one seems more competively priced than the HP version from last year. Thick maple cap, compound radius, ebony board.. I'm guessing these will sell

    Well as a Jackson Guy, gotta admit that's a neat SG and would buy it. Ebony Fingerboard, compound radius and 24 frets and maple top. Not bad

    Hey Trogly, to get a good feeling for the neck profiles, Wildwood apparently measures the thickness of each guitar that comes through their shop at the first and twelfth frets. 0.84-0.95 is reasonably chunky. Since I've been looking for a chunky axe, their website has been a great resource as far as figuring out which factory models come with a profile I might like. (60's LP is like 0.8-0.9, 50's is like 0.9-1.0, putting your SG directly between the two).
    For my part, I hate having the output jack on the side of the guitar. Anything involving fixing two round surfaces to one another is going to be less reliable than flat ones, and there's nothing more annoying than a loose output jack. Also, my preferred angle while sitting seems to be guitar on a strap, resting between my two legs, which for obvious reasons complicates the side output jack. Give me a classic style SG output jack type coming out of the front of the guitar and I'll be happy.

    :49, door number 3. At one time, the '64 SG Standard outsold EVERYTHING for years on end. Glad its carried on.

    I've owned 3 Gibson SG's of which none have had neck dive, my Epiphone on the other hand has the worst neck dive I've ever experienced . I would suggest trying as many as they have to find one that is not a neck diver ! That said, nice demo man !

    Thank you so much for this in-depth review -- I own this very axe.. damn cool --- wear a jean shirt and a spiked leather strap? This is just sick... come on... maple + mahogany body.. Ebony - Mother f pearl .. splitting pickups .. black flame .. the sounds are great ... i played a old school 78 LP custom for lifetime .. the wt. difference .. ya see i have my custom and light wt.. and nice cutout 24 neck..
