The spacers on the top of the pickups are there because the metal covers are so much thinner than the plastic. If they weren’t there the pole screws would stick out of the top more than normal. I put metal covers on my P90 V and they came with spacers.
That would be my guess too though they should be nickel silver and have low conductivity but probably would effect the sound. I wonder what these pickups would sound like with a plastic cover instead.

Mine is actually really light like your left handed one, but it is one piece and has a nice swirly grain. It is hands down the best SG I have ever played and one of my all time favorite guitars.
SG’s do balance better with the strap button on the horn. The back of the heel button will neck dive on most style guitars from my experience. Those pickups sounded great to me. The clean tones were rich and ballsy without being muddy like a lot of Gibsons. And the dirt tones were really nasty (in a good way). Pretty sweet fiddle.
I like the fat neck. Actually, I like their thin necks too. I never really notice the neck thickness untill I switch to a different one. After a minute, it's the new normal for me.
Michael Hannigan... Well stated! My 94' SG standard has a fatter neck but my 2020 SG Special P-90 (faded Pelham Blue).has more of a slim taper neck. Both totally different from each other in their necks but nothing like a half hour after playing and Now you're used to it!
@@jonathanhudak2059 yeah, my 92' Standard has a fatter neck too than most SG's I've ever played so maybe Gibson made them that way back then or something? I don't really mind neck thickness tbh. For me, it's more nut width that matters.
@@jubei7259 I find that their necks frequently vary slightly from what their spec is. I mean, I don't know the exact specs, but since they're hand-made, I assume there's quite a bit of tolerance in measurements as long as they have the correct "feel". When my playing gets a litte stale or I'm stuck in a song, I'll swap out a 60s LP for an SG, a 50s LP, a special - whatever. I'm usually worse for the first hour or so, but then when I switch back in an hour or two, or day, or two I feel like I've "unlocked" something I was stuck on. It's all psychological and I can't even begin to explain why or if this happens to everyone. What I am pretty sure about us that anyone could play on a given neck for a week or so and no longer feel that it's different. Maybe some outliers are different like an Ibanez wizard 99 neck or whatever - but some necks are just really, really different. Among Gibson's and Fenders though (not sure about vintage fender and the tiny radius - don't think I ever played one), switching around doesn't see to matter to me much except as I said, maybe to help me with some tiny breakthroughs.

As for the little pads between the pickup cover and the bobbin, I'm guessing since the covers are not soldered in place the pads help reduce unwanted feedback.
@@VidMashUp I've had it happen in the past with unsoldered pickup covers causing unwanted feedback (my personal experience). Why Gibson would place those pads there can only be a guess.
The little pads are insulating the cover from the pickups so theres no strange vibration. It's common practice to put insulating tape on electrical parts that resonate.
@@VidMashUp he’s right though. Covers are usually soldered in place and the whole assembly is wax-potted. The pads are a quicker (and cheaper) alternative
This is usually done on fender p bass pickups so the string doesn't clack on the pole piece , all it is , is reducing the amount the pole pieces sticks out the top of the cover , maybe why they did it here ???
My wife bought me one I gotta say I love it the screws for the bridge are in the plastic bag with the other case candy Great video Trogly and Yes Toni Iommi is my favorite guitar player The Godfather of heavy metal.
Considering the price they asking for this, having no finish there at the neck and it looks like someone took a screw driver or sanding paper to it, sorry but that's unacceptable to me, even if it's hidden beneath covers.

The little felt pieces under the pickup covers are likely there to dampen vibrations and thus feedback. Makes sense since they are not held in place by solder.
The only SG I ever tried that didn’t experience neck dive from was an epiphone ebony Tony Iommi G400 and I think it was due to the position of the strap button on the horn . I’ve never understood why Gibson or Epiphone doesn’t put the strap button there in the first place , if all of the Tony iommi models successfully have it there . And it seems to kill the biggest complaint of the model .
It's not about the placement of the strap buttons as you can see at 24:08, it's about the weight of the body. Heavier bodied examples likely wont neck dive, lighter ones probably will.
I have the epiphone tony iommi sg and the position of the strap button is the same as this one...does it neck dive? Yes. I think it helps of you buy a heavy guitar and not because of the position of the strap button.
The traditional pro III and the SG that I bought from you has drastically different necks. The SG has quite a chunky neck compared to the LP. I'll have to remind my brother who started playing before I did and is a lefty that plays right handed that it is possible to play with a missing finger tip. Of course that happened a few years back and he kind of gave up playing awhile getting used to a missing index finger tip. I think on this guitar I may just leave the sticker in the case or put on the case itself.
The ones on Sweetwater do have the bridge screws for adjusting the intonation installed in all their pics. Funny just how differently they're all adjusted in the pictures though.
Yes it does, a pickup reacts to ferromagnetic stuffs. So when you have metal covers, in sorta way its "resonating more" so you make the pickups into "microphonics" (for example if you scream into the pickup and you hear the voice on the amp) if you want a powerfull (but noice with high gain) sound, you can make copper covers lefting a tiny space between the pickups and the upper face cover (so when the copper plates moves, it induce current to your pickups)

I prefer the Tony Iommi signature sg Epiphone 2015 model that I purchased in about May 2021 after having to check about 20 different online stores just to find one for sale. I finally found a used one for sale for $850 (the same as they cost new) but it was worth it after the incredibly difficult time in finding one for sale. The high-output custom Gibson U.S.A Humbucker pickups on the 2015 model sound just amazing. And since I prefer the "heavier" sounding era of Black Sabbath when Ian Gillan, Ronnie James Dio, & Tony Martin were vocalists in the band, the Epiphone with the humbuckers was the definite choice for me.

The new model year typically launches in the fall as the current model year winds down. The pattern is as follows: YYRRRRRRR YY is the model year RRRRRRR is the number in product for the model year (starts at 0000001)
Love my SG special. Just had to buy it back from a pawnshop but I plan on being buried with that guitar. Or cremated. I don’t really care, but if I’m going to hell I’m bringing that guitar with me.
The regular sg special is good because it has the small lp jr tuners with plastic keys that weigh next to nothing. Mine is really light and has no neck dive.
I was waiting for you to play the lefty in the demo! 🤪 Rick Beato just did a video on playing left handed. Keep up the great work, Mr. Trogly! I look forward to your videos daily. I’m going to support you by buying some merch soon. God bless, my friend. You’re the best!
Tony Iommi also used a Dallas Range Master Treble Booster unit which was providing all his gain until the 1980's when his then newly hired guitar tech threw it away
Mine also did not come with the bridge set screws. I emailed Gibson and received a complete new bridge with screws in less than a week. Fantastic guitar.
The first one or two albums were mainly Gibson P90s on the 'Monkey' (he used another SG too), but after that he had John Birch replace the neck pickup with a custom pickup and had the bridge P90 pickup rewired (overwired).
I just got one last Saturday and I’m in love with it🤘awesome guitar and sounds unbelievable through my Runt🤘 The screws for the bridge were in my Gibson black bag🤘
I bought one from Sweetwater the day they came out and I love it! Mine appears to have a one piece body with nice figuring. I can't find any seams on the body.
The finish flaw under the plastics should of been flagged by QC and fixed unacceptable in a 2k instrument. The guitar is pretty meh overall except for those custom pickups, which epiphone and Gibson seem to be doing a lot lately. That is where the value is with this guitar is the custom voiced pickups and boy do they sound so good. You get the beef of humbucker and the clairty with of a single coil. I'm both a fan of Gibson and epiphone current p-90 offerings. Like that epiphone LP special you reviewed. I've certainly became a p-90 convert. Don't get me wrong I still like humbuckers but now get why so many are drawn to p-90s over humbuckers they are very versatile pickups.
I still have a Schaller 458 in Gold Stashed away, since it was discontinued for something like this. Even Jaydee no longer can build Old Boys with Schaller Bridge like Iommi used because unable to find them
Having a strap button on the horn is worth the upcharge alone....that way you can actually play this guitar standing up and if you are really ambitious gig with it....none of that is possible on standard SG specials with the design-flawed neck-joint strap button that creates neck dive and a forward leaning guitar.
Inspired to play from guys that played Gibsons, but I just like my Ibanez more. But would totally buy an Iommi signature however I’d like a dark color one
Love the neck…. If it makes you play…then maybe(?) it’s worth it…..? Does anyone know of a similar neck profile on any other SG Special releases/years? Don’t know if I want to pay that up-charge? Sounded great though. That would be killer through an AC30!
Didn't mean to buy a "star" guitar but was looking for a nice SG and couldn't refuse a mint Monkey with all the goodies for several hundred off. Now I actually do appreciate all the Iommi-ness of it as an old SG aficionado. What a beautiful fast plek'd board SG. It's got that shimmer chatoyance effect up the wazoo and the macro tone is of the lighter cherry almost orange mahogany. My rightie weighs a massive (not) 6.156 lbs . If my 9 lb Pine Tele fell over on it it would be monkey-cide, the end of the Monkey. 👀
I think the SG Specials usually have pretty chunky necks. At least mine has! That's a big part of the reason why I bought it. Get it? Big part? I'll show myself out.
Since you brought up the left horn is longer than the right I see it immediately, lol! Soon as you took them out of the cases I spotted it right off. Thanks for more informative and great vids.
I wish they'd put the output jack on the side like his other Signatures. After all, this is supposed to be inspired by The Monkey, not a Gibson USA replica. Same goes for the fact that it doesn't have 24 frets
If I wanted to get divorced I could get the custom shop one but I don't even think this is worth the money now after seeing the $1600 one.Since it's pretty different than the custom shop I think they should have done cross inlays like he has on some of his guitars.
Thanks charlie. Go with your bad ass black service Black Sabbath coolness man. I could tell you a digging it and it sounded great. And it doesn't sound anything like my special my SG 2005 Gibson special. Mine's and wine red full gloss. Am I don't have anything like the old time ones. It's got a regular stop bar that you find on the standard it's got the same tuna matic bridge as is on the 2005 standard the pickups I don't know which ones they put on the 2005 standard but mine are 490t1900 uncovered. Which I plant the cover at some point with some Chrome and nickel plated pickup coverage. It only has that mother of pearl inlays on the fingerboard. It does have a different neck shape. Or thickness. It's like in between the thick ones and the skinny ones. It's a very very comfortable neck profile to say the least. Well you were just playing with so cool charlie. And sounded so great once you hit the distortion. I've come to understand that throughout the history of the SG special they are so many iterations it's pretty cool. I love mine. When I first got it I thought I'd be wanting to change out the pickups but the truth is I don't want anymore they do they do what you want them to and they sound real really good so why flop them out. Yeah that's what I would call the flopping out so I don't think there's going to be much better if it's my guitar perfectly. Again I'm just going to be adding pick up wings and nickel plated or Chrome covers on it. Anyway just repeating myself that means it's time to stop the comment thanks again man. You were rocking. Sometimes it's hard on my little Android phone I have a big Android phone LOL to really know what the guitar sounds like. But this guitar sounded great even through my android. The only thing I have a problem with is I can't get over 60 cycle hum. At first I thought that this guitar really didn't have much but then when you were playing lightly or softly with the overdrive it was there. You know and that would drive me crazy. Anyway sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist

Save your money and buy a Jaydee Old Boy……… The SG he has been playing for forty years…….Just Gibson trying to make a buck.. Hopefully my Jaydee will be here in a few weeks…..But MAN it’s been a wait………
Was just about to post the same thing. I've done side by side comparisons of both the Jaydee & Gibson Custom Shop Iommi, & the Jaydee BLOWS the Gibson away. Pickups much hotter and the polished aluminum crucifix inlays DON'T tarnish at all, unlike the sterling silver ones do in the C/S after just one play...only con is Jaydee has about a 16 month wait on their Iommi models, but well worth it imho....
@@VidMashUp Yup, my point is if you want the most authentic Iommi SG, regardless of model, go with Jaydee in England. Longer wait times but well worth it in the end. Gibson just can't compare.
An SG with a heavier body, fatter neck & P90's? For me that's a keeper straight away but I think paying more than you would for a Standard is a bit much, (even though it does have the mop logo). SG's are players' guitars so when you're getting into LP ball parks price-wise, I think Gibson are taking the piss to be quite honest.
Trogly could you please compare this one with Epiphone Tony Iommi SG which was released this year? I am curious what makes over 1000$ price difference :) I consider of buying one of those but I hestitate if it is worth to put over 1000$ more to have Gibson.

The new model year typically launches in the fall as the current model year winds down. It is not uncommon for a new model year model to be produced during the previous model year (example - a 2015 model may have been built in late 2014).
The pattern is as follows:
YYRRRRRRR
YY is the model year
RRRRRRR is the number in product for the model year (starts at 0000001)
Love my SG special.
Check out my custom shop monkey video for that.
Tony Iommi also used a Dallas Range Master Treble Booster unit which was providing all his gain until the 1980's when his then newly hired guitar tech threw it away
did not expect the pieces to fit at 20:31 lmfao
Mine also did not come with the bridge set screws. I emailed Gibson and received a complete new bridge with screws in less than a week. Fantastic guitar.
I love seeing you do videos of Sgs!!! I own a 2016 tribute and a 2019 modern SG and they are soooo much fun!!!
Alex Fotheringham... SGs are awesome guitars! If I could only have one type of electric guitar, for me it'd be SGs all day long!
I didn't realize the old classic sabbath songs were on p90's until just now.
Richie Johnson isn't that amazing?
The first one or two albums were mainly Gibson P90s on the 'Monkey' (he used another SG too), but after that he had John Birch replace the neck pickup with a custom pickup and had the bridge P90 pickup rewired (overwired).
I just got one last Saturday and I’m in love with it🤘awesome guitar and sounds unbelievable through my Runt🤘
The screws for the bridge were in my Gibson black bag🤘
I bought one from Sweetwater the day they came out and I love it! Mine appears to have a one piece body with nice figuring. I can't find any seams on the body.
I bought it from Sweetwater on what I thought was the first day and I haven't received it yet.
Michael Hannigan... How long ago was that if may ask?
@@VidMashUp they only had 4 in stock. They were sold out an hour after I ordered mine.
It's about time Gibson unveiled a Cherry finish and an Ebony finish for an SG. I thought they'd never do it!
no zero fret???
Even Jaydee no longer can build Old Boys with Schaller Bridge like Iommi used because unable to find them
got the 1599 deal . . . . sounds and craftsmanship is tops . . vintage cherry looks nice ,neck is medium c
I own a 50 year old Japanese SG that's awesome. I really hate the strap button on the horn.
Toni iommi. My hero. Just wish his models were accessible to us blue collar folks lol.
It's tonY.
You missed a note- the tailpiece adjustment screws are advertised as being included with the guitar.
Some of these come with the screws, most don't, but Gibson will mail them to you if you ask.
They should just move the strap button to the horn on all SG's and only use lightweight Kluson tuners to eliminate neck dive.
Looks cool, I have an 05 SG Classic, neck looks very similar. My SG Classic is still my favorite guitar.
Nice to hear a review of this guitar where only Black Sabbath isn't Played. You are the first review that played a bit of clean.
Wow great review Austin! Thanks for getting both models and comparing them, this is a really sharp guitar!
Thanks for this one! The neck shape and dimensions was a "mystery" for me. My SG is and 1.73 at nut but thin in thickness(.870). Again thanks
I've seen covered pickups have buzzing issues so those felt pads might be to avoid that.
i’m taking a class right now where we build guitars and some of the mahogany necks are insanely figured
Cool video, the main difference on the custom shop version is the era correct neck joint, the USA has the same body as the current Sg special.
.88 is about in the standard batguard or like the ‘64 335 or 50’s LP..
Having a strap button on the horn is worth the upcharge alone....that way you can actually play this guitar standing up and if you are really ambitious gig with it....none of that is possible on standard SG specials with the design-flawed neck-joint strap button that creates neck dive and a forward leaning guitar.
I put a strap button on the horn of my LP Jr DC and it’s way better balanced. Might do it to my SG too.
This guitar looks great. You seemed particularly impressed.
I grabbed one off the wall at the Gibson garage and was shocked the neck was CHUNKY. Like R8 chunky. Looked awesome though
Apparently the 61 standards that gibson is offering all have chunky necks but that's about what I've heard.
The neck and hairy dog 🐩 comparison was funny
Thanks for supporting us Lefties Trogly!!
like the sg but couldn't figure out the neck dive. sitting down was good though
Given the significant weight difference, i am wondering if there is a noticeable tonal difference between the 2.
I think the SG Specials usually have pretty chunky necks. At least mine has! That's a big part of the reason why I bought it. Get it? Big part? I'll show myself out.
Maybe that heavy SG wont be so neck divey
Lmao for real. The ONLY complaint I have about my SG
Does anyone make left-handed cases?
Since you brought up the left horn is longer than the right I see it immediately, lol! Soon as you took them out of the cases I spotted it right off. Thanks for more informative and great vids.
they should have kept the superflux pickups btw are the john birch superflux pickups p90s?
did you maybe heard something about the Dave Mustaine sigs? I'm sooooo waiting at the Silver Gibson Flying V
mine weighs next to nothing. The woods are definitely premium as is the attention to detail.
I wish they'd put the output jack on the side like his other Signatures. After all, this is supposed to be inspired by The Monkey, not a Gibson USA replica. Same goes for the fact that it doesn't have 24 frets
Did anyone else notice that gibson got rid of the lefty sg specials when the colors changed?
If I wanted to get divorced I could get the custom shop one but I don't even think this is worth the money now after seeing the $1600 one.Since it's pretty different than the custom shop I think they should have done cross inlays like he has on some of his guitars.
Just get divorced it’s worth it
@@jackibberson5126 not the alimony I would have to pay.I wouldn't be able to afford a Epiphone if I did that.
🤘another Iommi SG
Anyway sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist
trophy, remember the big gouge in the face of the head stock below the gibson logo on the custom shop replica? do you think that’s a chunk taken out the vernier where the sg crown inlay used to be? i assume that guitar would’ve came with one. tell me what you think!
Beautiful guitar, the original of course was modified and had that sticker
@@Leo_Safko 21 months and counting….
@@Leo_Safko so, a totally different guitar, basically.
@@VidMashUp Yup, my point is if you want the most authentic Iommi SG, regardless of model, go with Jaydee in England. Longer wait times but well worth it in the end. Gibson just can't compare.
I have two Jaydee Old boys, they are definitely worth the wait and money. perhaps the best guitars I've played. will probably get this one too.
Does darker = heavier? Weight and/or sound? 🤔
What I'm trying to figure out is how many of these have been made
An SG with a heavier body, fatter neck & P90's? For me that's a keeper straight away but I think paying more than you would for a Standard is a bit much, (even though it does have the mop logo). SG's are players' guitars so when you're getting into LP ball parks price-wise, I think Gibson are taking the piss to be quite honest.
Great show. Does the right hand version have the correct monkey sticker? ( The violin should be in right hand)
i think you forgot the thumbnail
Trogly could you please compare this one with Epiphone Tony Iommi SG which was released this year? I am curious what makes over 1000$ price difference :) I consider of buying one of those but I hestitate if it is worth to put over 1000$ more to have Gibson.
Did the heavier right handed one also have neck dive issue?
I wish you would have taken of the poker chip, what if it read treble under it
Is it ebony stained fretboard? My gretsch duo jet has an ebony stained rosewood fretboard
