That price tag seems like madness to me. Even $4000 for the regular non-signature one is really high for what you're getting. $9000+ is completely nonsensical to me for a guitar like that. It's just a LP with a piezo added, smacked around a bit, and with a custom truss rod cover.

So if it has the standard weight relief that late 80s/90s Customs have, would that exclude it from the possibility of it being a early reissue of 60s as you had prosed as a possibility?

Honestly I think Jerry’s vocals were just as important as Layne’s. Layne had an incredible voice, but that band wouldn’t have had sounded like they did without the beautifully creepy harmonies that Jerry did. His voice is why they still sound like AIC with William Duvall.

Jerry is important and everyone is entitled to their own opinion but Layne carried a certsin energy and someone else singing his lines isnt the same. Or good. Not to mention WD sings like the albums and Layne had a whole nother level of volatility to his live singing.

Layne was lightning in a bottle, a one in a million amazing unique singer. He passed away. It is unfair to Jerry and Sean and the AIC guys to not be able to keep going doing what they do. William isnt Layne. Nor should he be expected to be. Jerry is an established creative powerhouse of talent in his own right, can and will do whatever he wants, and people will want to hear it because he is top notch.
Comparing old to new AIC is a waste of time. Cant bring him back, can only be grateful for what he left behind. I look forward to what William and the remaining members will create.

Jerry is/was one of the best rock songwriters PERIOD. He is also one of the best singers/harmonizers, guitar players. He could easily be one of the best to ever play in his genre. He could have sang ALL AIC songs. But, Layne was a beast on vocals. This is one of my all-time favorite bands.

Jerry’s vocals really added that droning dimension to their music that made them sound so “vibey”, if you ask me. He doesn’t hold a candle to Layne in terms of having an iconic voice, but his was just as necessary as Layne. Not to mention he wrote most of their music 🫢

Just not a fan of perfectly fine brand new guitars purposely dinged up and scratched , knifed up by Gibson shop employees, or Fenders for that matter. Then they sell them for double the price, or more. It just never made sense to me. Anytime I have ever dinged one of my own guitars that were still like brand new, the cringe factor would set in, and I’d feel guilty about it for days, if not weeks.

Hi Austin, I found and started watching your channel a couple of months ago and I've got to say that I find it really interesting. What I find especially helpful is when you demo guitars and play the same or similar chord sequences and riffs because I can hear the differences in brands (Gibson, Fender etc.) models, and pickups. I've been playing guitar a long, long time and I find your reviews and demos of different guitars one of the best on youtube for those reasons I've stated. I know it can get boring to play the same stuff every time but I for one find it incredibly useful to hear the subtle differences using the same chord and riffs. That's not to take away from when you play pieces from particular guitarists. I just thought I'd let you know how I felt about it. Thanks for all that you do for the guitar community.

12:12 A piezo is a sensor that is sensitive to physical changes, so that a voltage (signal) is created across it accordingly. For a musical instrument what's relevant is the change in forces applied to its surface, or pressure changes (ie vibrations). Hence a piezo "feels" the vibrations of the strings and the instrument itself, so that when used it can add a more "acoustic"/ natural tone to the sound

I recently looked at a site that had what I believe was a first run wino near $20K. I'm looking at 60 on the first of the year. I dont feel that old but things like this remind me. A friend who plays added a synth pedal to his hear a few years back that required a piezo installed but the way it was installed was on the body in front the bridge. Have a cool effect of two guitars played at once since he still had his axe plugged in separately through a different channel.

Interesting to see the differences in this one vs the one we reviewed about a month ago. For example it looks like they barely put any yellow tinted lacquer on the headstock vs ours which was quite yellow. Similar looking checking but the gouges above the bridge pickup are pretty different for example. Keep an eye on that bridge, ours broke a wound string twice at the bridge, which has never happened to me before. Also the piezo had a little bit of a fit but apparently it's working better now vs last time I used it.

Not in the market for a Gibson really, (I still have my 1968 LP Custom 'Black Beauty') but considering buying the Epiphone version and putting some Monty's PAFs + 50's Loom into it. Recently picked up the Epi 1959 'tribute' with Gibson Custom Shop electronics and I really think it's a great buy - Epi / Gibson hybrid - maybe a sign of things to come? You really did a disservice to Jerry Cantrell with your description of Alice in Chains. Hey, I get it- you really don't know anything about them compared to their real fanbase. And while you may think of them and their vocals, a lot of guitar players have immense respect for Jerry because he truly is a master of making great riffs and producing groundbreaking tone. And if you're going to cover a Jerry Cantrell sig guitar- it would be really good to mention the great stuff the band has done since Layne's passing, as well as Jerry's incredible solo work.
Not trying to dig on ya- but there are a lot of people that know that Jerry is and has been the architect of all things Alice in Chains from day one- and we have placed him very high on the rock pedestal. Now I'd really like to see them release a signature V like the one he's been playing recently.

Grunge was really a terrible label as it really just refers to bands that came out of Seattle- there is no distinct sound you can discern from that- they were all quite different.

It was the first Gibson I ever owned & I've had it since it was pretty much new. Interesting fact about Jerry’s dad. His nickname was Rooster. I’m guessing the JJ stands for Jerry Junior. Also, Jerry rocked G&L rampage guitars hard and the polka dots on the one he played a lot originally were actually burn marks from a blowtorch. He also sang on most of the stuff and he would write all those melodies and harmony together. He knows over a thousand classic cowboy songs by heart and can sing better than most lead singers. What made and makes Alice such a unique sounding band is it’s really more of a dual lead singer band.

Every time I use it with a new band that I join, someone will say "WTF is that, it sounds awesome and different", so there is something to those 70's LP's. I fixed everything wrong with it and still use it until this day. I loved it so much that I sold a 81' custom that was near perfect back then because it didn't feel or sound 1/2 as good as the 74. I recorded and toured with it the whole time and I think it sounds better and better every time I play it. It's gone through 5 pickup changes over the years(sweat and abuse I guess) and it still stands strong. It's still by favorite LP to this day even owning 30 guitars and still own 5 LP's and probably 100 guitars since. The JC is a rip off in my opinion, wine red were the easiest and cheaper Les Pauls to find about 10-20 years ago, I used to see them everywhere and I still see them often. I think people warmed up to them over the years so they are not so generic anymore. I love them so its no biggie to me.

I dont know how much modding someone like Eric Clapton did to his black Strat. Or David Gilmour with his red Strat. Yet both men deservedly received signature guitars. Is it because they were old guitars?

Gilmour's Red Strat was a brandnew '57 reissue, built in 1983, when he bought it directly from Fender's UK warehouse in early 1984. Stock electronics were gutted completely in 1985 and replaced with active EMG SAs set very low in the pickguard to make them sound more transparent, with less output and midrange. It had no traditional tone controls - instead it had a combo of an EXG (treble and bass boost plus mid scoop) and an SPC (mid boost). Gilmour very rarely used the EXG for anything and mostly left it flat. He used the SPC - in moderation - for leads/solos (on "7" at most, never fully cranked). The guitar was first used with these electronics on stage at Live Aid when Gilmour played with Bryan Ferry.
The switch to active EMGs happened because of intolerable levels of 50/60Hz cycle hum and RF noise, caused by lighting rigs/stage electronics and exacerbated by the long signal paths in Gilmours complex guitar rig. The regular Fender single coils the guitar originally had sometimes picked up more noise than string vibrations in that environment.
Gilmour's Black Strat is a completely different animal. It started out as a second-hand late '60s CBS-era sunburst strat that had already been oversprayed/refinished with black paint when it was bought. Endless modifications over the years, too many to go into detail on in a RUclips comment. You can find entire websites and books about that guitar and its different versions. It has had at least three different vibrato systems and half a dozen different necks, including one made by Charvel and - in more recent times - the original neck of the Red Strat! In a way it's the mother of all "partscasters", nothing on and in the Black Strat is orginal, except the wood of the body. And even the body was routed out and refilled to install a Kahler vibrato, then switch back to a vintage Fender-style.
In a way the Black Strat is the Fender equivalent to Neil Young's "Old Black" Gibson. That guitar doesn't have it's original neck either - or anything else, except the wood of the body and (possibly) the neck pickup (under a different cover). People still refer to it as a '53 Les Paul, but it's really a mid-to-late '60s creation with the body of a '53. The "face" of the headstock is actually the one used on SG Standards because the neck was replaced by Gibson at a time when they didn't build any Les Pauls. That's right, the arguably most famous pre-humbucker-era early-'50s Gibson Les Paul on the planet is really a '60s "partscaster" with a '50s body, a '60s SG neck and a '60s Firebird bridge pickup (not a "mini humbucker", same size, but those have pole pieces and are constructed -and sound - differently)!
