I was very hesitant at first since I had a crappy experience with an Epiphone years ago! When these newer customs got released, they spoke to me right away. The headstock, ebony and over look just made them more desirable compared to the old ugly headstock. I upgraded my bridge pickup also with a Duncan Custom.
A band member of my brothers had a wine red les paul custom in 2009. Best looking guitar I've ever seen. Got to play it a handful of times. Wish they made more in wine red
I had a 2012 Les Paul Classic Custom in Wine Red that I regretably sold right before they got discontinued. That thing literally was like a weight relieved Les Paul Custom with a slimmer neck, baked maple fretboard, the split diamond inlay like a LPC, and the Classic 57 pickups sounded great. The only difference was no back binding which I didn't care about. It was the only new Gibson I'd ever bought and it was $1800. I've been considering a Wino to replace it 🥹

Great review! I've been interested in Epiphone les Pauls for a while: I was looking at the Prophecy LP before, but realised I wasn't a hardcore metal player, I was also keen on the Epiphone modern LP, but it was the custom that really seemed right for me. Like you, I'm not really a Jerry Cantrell fan, it was more the features of the guitar that got me interested! 👍
I've been wanting one since they were released. Waited till I found one for a good deal. Ended up finding one on zzounds, used for $700 with original case. Mint condition I would say. I have a few Epiphone LP's and this is the second best one I have. The best being a 2003 Korean made LP standard flame top.
Great video. The recent Epi LP customs are great and the 'wino' looks great, too. Every guitarist should own an Epi 'inspired by Gibson' LPC. It's a 'purple patch' guitar for the brand. No doubt.
I really do like Alice in Chains, great music with great harmonization in there singing, very sweet. I love the Wine Red look of these and you can see wood grain on the front and more so on the back of mine, such a sweet looking Les Paul Custom. I really like the 98T Pro, it sounds really good in the comparison I did between my Gibson LP Studio HP that came with the 498T in the bridge. Like you , I did swap out the Alnico Classic Pro with a SD 59 and of course had a fret dressing to make the guitar as best as it can be. Definitely one of favorite guitars to play right now that I own. The price point is really good as well, especially since you get a nice hard case with it.
Epiphone have really stepped up their game in recent years, now if they could just get the QC to match this example on all their guitars they would be amazing!

Those Epiphone Custom's you spoke about from the late 80's, with that different headstock, narrow at the top, are known as the elitist range, but it has always been my understanding that they were Japanese not Korean made. I was thinking about getting the Epi Cantrell until I found out the body is chambered. The stock Epiphone probuckers are excellent Pups.
I think the elitist was later, the headstock on the elitist is different. I’m no expert but the elitist was produced from 2002 to 2008 from what I can find online, the guitar I’m taking about was already old when I got it in ‘97/‘98.
No issues with high frets or anything, would benefit from taking some time with a fret end file to really smooth the fret ends off but had no particularly sharp frets or fret sprout.
