After a long wait - the Adam Jones Flying V is finally here! "Collector's Editions" from Gibson are always very pricey, but this one was tagged at 20k. I initially feared these would be a tough sell for Gibson so held off when I saw 18 of them on Gibson USA's website, but I was shocked after 36 hours most of those had sold through so FOMO got the best of me and I broke down and bought one. Occasionally, due to canceled/fraudulent orders, one or two would pop up on the website again. As of two weeks after launch, Gibson is sold out of theirs and a few more have popped up at dealers. Overall, even in a weak market, the Adam Jones Custom Shop Flying V Collector's edition was a success! That is likely due in part that they were pretty limited at 50 units. Gibson selling at least half of those direct kept the values strong. Will we see a regular release from Gibson or an Epiphone? Time will tell... but I'm betting on at least an Epiphone.

Yo, I hope we don’t talk about reverse silverburst for the next 6 months like we did with silverburst.
He is so overrated
We'll reverse it and talk about it for 6 minutes
The monkey paw curls
Amen
Reverse Antigua would look like a stained toilet bowl.
Paying $20k for a guitar is absolutely nuts. 😮
It's disgusting. I laugh at people who spend like that. I have $700 guitars better than these insanely priced pieces of wood.
Gibson said it's ok. 🤣
Not even for one “that looks pretyyy darn good”? 😂 Now,who the fu(k that actually has to work for a living, is gonna buy this “guitar”?
@@davidking2835 They have either lost all concern for the working person/musician, or they want to book as many passengers on the USS Gibson before the ship goes down.
People like that earn $20K in a week.
20k and they couldn't even get the burst even. Ugh…
you can tell too its not subtle
Yeah, we'll see if everybody shreds this the same as they did the one from the other day. Gibson advertises this as a meticulously applied burst😅
The paint job is TRASH...!
First thing I noticed and thought "I mean, there are plenty of Epiphones with properly applied bursts" 🤷♂
$3,000 guitar, $17,000 Adam Jones doodle.
$1,200.00 at best...
To each their own, but this seems like a total miss to me
You are not alone....
And, just my worthless opinion, I like the logo on the headstock, but the rest is uglier than homeade sin.
More trash from Gibson. I'll take a regular ass, run of the mill black V any day of the week.
"they're even nice enough to give you (pickguard) screws"
And only $20k. I'm bowled over by such acts of generosity 😂
they also provided 'dings', so you don't have to worry about it.
Those are tone screws..and dings
LMFAO 😂😂
We are truly not worthy
They missed an opportunity to print "go screw yourself" on the bag
Man, if I dropped $20k on that thing I would feel like such a.... Tool!!!
You would be a 'TOOL'
Good one. Tool is one of those nerd bands, not awful but I don't get It. Mediocre at best. Trying way too hard to be weird.
@@Mikebvanhalenjust like you with this comment.
$20,000.00 = One 61 sg TV Yellow, a Marshall jcm800 full stack, and a great weekend at the Bunny Ranch. 😁
lol
Bunny Ranch!!! Yes!!!!!!!!!!! Hahahahaha
The Bunny Ranch 😂🤙 Glove up, my friend
Better save some for penicillin.
The COA damage is so Gibson it's almost comic.
Tom Murphy aging the COA is a new spec!
The upper toggle switch on the upper wing was first done by Randy Rhoads on his polka dot V.
I liked the location on his original Concord on the top side of the upper wing.
Even the knobs and the strat jackplate are Randy’s style
@@Darth.ShredderIt's not a great location, trust me. If you have the toggle towards you for the neck pickup, and lean into the guitar at all, your abdomen hits the switch and kicks it to the middle position. I have one of the Music Zoo's RR 1.5, and that's what happens with it. Great idea that didn't work very well
@@JokersWild70 I had one of the originals. I didn't say it was in a great location - just that I liked it better on the side than the location on this one.I had one of the original Jacksons when they came with half vintage trem and half with Floyds, ong before the Music Zoo versions. .Never had a problem.but then again I didn't play it much.
1:40 This is my question. Other than manufactured scarcity, I'm not seeing anything that justifies the price tag.
It's sort of a Gibson thing, like $999.00 PAF's
Might as well have put the toggle switch on the headstock😂
that was fuckin funny!!! cheers brother!!!
Hilarious Bruh.....👍😂🤘
I'm digging that idea let's put it to Gibson 😅
😂
Nope. I don't care for silverburst reverse or not, I hate the headstock, it doesn't sound great and its $20,000. Serious fail.
$20,000 regardless of what kind of guitar it is makes it absolutely absurd. 🤢🤢🤮
I bet rockstars/musicians pay just as much or more for a custom guitar. A lot of them are collectors too.
that burst on the top is shameful
Firewood
It's nice that they are still practicing on getting the "aging" right on the $20,000 guitars. What a pig this one turned out to be. OMG!
You can buy a guitar or a 32 ford roadster
**ROFLcopter**
Yes.
It's absolutely awful. D- for sure and would be an F if it wasn't a Gibson. The front strap button is stupid..
In a few years time this video might well appear in a documentary about why Gibson guitars bit the dust.
The toggle switch placement comes from Randy Rhoads’ Sandoval V. Which is why Zakk had some guitars with it there.
Wow.. This is bound to be the final nail in the coffin for Gibson's insanely priced Adam Jones phenomena. And they should pitch this one in before nailing it down.
Hey CC So what you're trying to say is that you ordered one eh? 😂😂 jk!
@@jonathanhudak2059 Brother, that thing is a hot mess!
Sadly whoever was going to buy them from the get is still gonna buy them. They aren't for normal consumers
@cataclysmicconverter lol it's neat but not for $20,000
I am a fan of tool, but I find this guitar hilarious for a guy part of a band that refused to attend the awards shows. So here’s a new guitar that is made to look VOS…yet Adam Jones has only had his ORIGINAL one for two years….that is laughable. Anyway, they found a way to sell 50 UGLY guitars for crazy money so congrats Gibson. Had this been a regular run of obtainable guitars, it would be a major non-selling failure.
I dig it but that toggle location is so foolish. Headstock also kinda kills it. Price tag is ludicrous. Maybe I don’t dig it 😂
Looks like a $1000 Dean 🤣
Except add 19K, and it can be yours! LOL
With a hangover. 👽
I beg to differ... at least on the Dean you get a competent person laying on the paint and doing the fade far more evenly.
Honestly in this case I think even the dean would look way better
@@jeffschmitt5866 true!
That headstock is begging for a String Butler.
And here I am nervous about dropping 1700 for a Strat.....
Right? I'm the same way.
At least you get a great guitar that stays in tune.....🎸🤘🎸
There's 50 suckers in this world.. it would've been great if this never sold out.
It hasn't. There's one available on AMS.
Better to buy Bitcoin. 😂😂😂
@@VidMashUp 49 suckers* I'm sure it'll sell soon unfortunately. What does this do? It gives Gibson the idea that they can put a ridiculous price on just about anything and it will still sell.
$20k! Talk about paying for the brand. The neck dive is courtesy of the strap button, near the neck, being in the wrong location. If the strap button was on the back of the guitar, near the neck joint, it would balance out. All of my V's the strap buttons are near the neck joint, and they have no neck dive. I doubt you'll be drilling a better location on the overpriced toy.
Edit: I hate 'aged' guitars. When I lay down cash for a new guitar, I want as close to flawless as possible. To me 'aged' screams used, so just buy a used instrument, and keep more money in your bank account.
That burst paint job looks like crap. $20k is absurd. This is a $2k guitar at a 10x price point. Pretty cringe.
It’d be a cool paint job if they didn’t do such a horrible job on the burst. The silver on the left side of the guitar is thinner than the right side. You’d think for that kind of money the paint job would be perfect.
I noticed that. Something I would definitely reject a guitar for (and have). It looks like they had a trainee paint it. WHY, GIBSON?
They should just say “Adam Jones painted this one”. And voila, another 10k
Forget it, Jake . . . it's Gibson.
well it looks like that the paint on adams one is fucked up too
@@hifibrony wow. Been trying to think of a way to sum up Gibson horrible QC, lack of give-a-shit, and insanely high prices.......that was perfect, quote Chinatown 👌.
1958 Flying V body was Korina, not Mahogany...
Yeap, Limba wood, do you know where the word Korina comes from...?
Having somehow won an IP lawsuit against Dean for its V (despite allowing almost 40 years of production, the law of estoppel that follows from that inaction, and the obvious differences between the guitars, including the headstock - which wasn’t the Flying V’s even if the split design featured on the Futura), doesn’t it strike anyone as odd that Gibson is now effectively reproducing a Dean guitar design here? Truly a golden law here: he who has the gold makes the law.
Gibson came up with the headstock prior to Dean and it was in the texas lawsuit iirc
@@ad1170 I already mentioned the Futura headstock. I also said it was not the Flying V’s. The use of Futura headstock with the V was Dean’s combination. Although both design elements were separate Gibson ideas, the latter let Dean use this combination of elements for 46 years. Which is where the law of estoppel comes in. With significant variations that render the Dean guitar quite distinct, it is impossible to confuse the Dean with a Gibson. Which is where the law of de minimis comes in.
The fact that a Texas court came to such an awful ruling brings no credit to the court. Quite the reverse. There’s a reason the a Norwegians use the word “Texas” to mean “crazy” or “wild”. From my perspective (as a retired multi-jurisdiction lawyer), it looks completely wrong. But hey, if it’s all grand to you, then that’s just ‘texas’ eh?
it is so overpriced, shockingly so.
7to 8 hundred would be a pretty decent price
How nice of Gibson to Murphy Lab age your COA booklet!
😂
Was just seeing someone complaining on their RUclips channel that Kirk Hammet was out of control with all the signatures he has but I'd say this and Slash's signatures got him best. What was that one song you were playing was it a tribute to a famous musician who just passed that was from Canada? Somgs lika April Wine . Been a fan of Seymour Duncan pickups since my brother installed some in his lawsuit era Electra. That took that guitar to a whole new height of playing.i like that they put that jack on the side but it and the toggle should be roght yhere with the rest of the controls. Having the side instead of the top.
This is so much worse than I could have imagined.
LOL fill that huge low cavitity with some foam wrapped fishing weights to balance it 😳
Then toss it in the lake. 💥
@@TranceMasterJack😂
diver's weight on the strap
I was thinking exactly the same 🤣
I just bought a standard Adam and I’m not a fan of tool but I’m a fan of silver burst I’m in love with mine ❤
That's gunna be a big no way from me. Misses everywhere
This just proves to me that "collecters" will buy any musical instrument regardless of cost just for "bragging rights" ...Gibson makes suckers of you all...20 damn grand?????? For 500 dollars worth of materials and labour at best? Jeeeeeeezus
And I just want to add each to their own you or Trogly can do what the heck they want with their own money I couldn't care less...this is just my honest opinion...it's not only the price it's the godawful finish!! (Again just my opinion)...it's just not a nice finish and don't get me started on Voc..and relicing instruments!!...so collectors want 100% clean instruments with as few blemishes and fingerprints as humanly possible because it's for a collection right? (thus it becoming nothing more that a lump of "look how much money I have and the expensive stuff I have"...it's no longer a musical instrument it's now just an ornament)......unless it's Reliced!!...where some dude at Gibson has gone to work at the ornament with keys screwdriver's and scraping the thing on the sidewalk (I have seen Stewmac do this).....it's a little backwards right?..
I think it's a cool looking guitar but I never have liked the aged guitar style. If I was going to spend money on anything I want it to be spotless and new.
Yeah. When you look at that thing, it looks like someone played it after eating a bag of greasy potato chips. Not to mention all the dents. I'm starting to think this fake aging thing has run it's course. At least I hope it has. They're thrilled to do it of course because they don't have to worry about QA. When I bought a gloss Silverburst, I rejected the first 3 because they were so lazy with the finish. Finally, 3 years and 4 guitars later, I got a perfect one. I'm sure those three rejects became "aged" and went out at $3k more after they banged some keys on them.
@@VidMashUp All good points. However if the actual finish is lopsided and not even a speck of caring went into the basic aspects, not even v.o.s. or relicing can be an excuse. At least the actual guitars that have aged to, as Trog puts it, level 4 have been constructed with care and diligence. These new ones are just.....meh. Funny, the way that saved Gibson from basically bankruptcy was to make production guitars that are as well made as the knockoffs but use "genuine" pickups and hardware....the metal is cast differently?....and charge insane prices...bold move Cotton 😳
You could buy 20 better guitars for 20k instead buying one hunk of junk, yikes
That headstock looks like a clubfoot.
Its cool austin... its just not 20k cool. His lp's were cool till they made 50 million of them id rather get a real norlan era silver burst.
I'm glad I haven't got the bug to own one of these relic guitars, or a signature model for that matter. I really just want to wear out my own guitars. The pricing is certainly helping that feeling along.
Everyone that owns a Les Paul has a signature guitar. 👍
I own 1 and yes ots a signature hahahahha shot
Even if I won the lottery I still wouldn’t pay that much money for this one
Relic guitars are a joke. You need to wear it in yourself so you know the damn thing gets played...
Why on earth would you put that much reverb on ?
Good review, been looking forward to this one. It's a neat enough guitar, but personally wouldn't pay $7k for one, let alone 20k. The weight is the biggest let down for me - a lot of AJ's tone comes from the weight of those old LPCs and to have a cert describe his preference for heavy guitars and some of them are sub-7lb?? Cash grab and Cesar/Adam have jumped the shark!! If you're an AJ fan and bought one to play then enjoy! But I pity those who bought them as investment pieces - still not entirely sold out and I think prices for these might only go DOWN, given they're generally considered something of a joke. Bit of a sad moment for Gibson and Adam Jones overall.
Good vid. $20,000 silver burst that probably doesn't sound any better than a $800 prs. Would be a fair down payment on a house.
That headstock was also used on the Reverse Flying V.
$20K for that?!? Ridiculous.
why in the h*ll would he put the switch tip on the upper bout!!???
Idk man... call me a hater but the more I see Gibson come up with these haf assed things, the less I want to give them any money lol. Sold my fretless wonder a few years ago, doubt I'm gonna get a Gibby ever again =/ (unless I see a piece that I can flip lol)
Does that switch get in the way of your arm. I think i would be tempted to wire it for just the bridge pick-up and take that switch out.
I'll be honest, I have never liked the forked headstock of Dean guitars, kinda the same yet opposite end of the spectrum on why I dislike headless. Its too big and just doesn't look/feel right to me. Now granted, I am in the minority here, but I kinda don't mind the Gibson version. It doesn't seem too overly gawdy to me.
Hey Austin, I reckon you could give those pickup heights a bit of a tweak to achieve a better balance. From the shots at the end, I'd say you're neck pickup is a bit too low and that's probably contributing to it seeming to lack as much pick related dynamics. Due to the bridge being so much hotter, I'd dial the raise the neck pickup and dial that in first and then set the bridge so that the output more or less seems at unity between the two.
That is the best thing about having a bridge pickup that is roughly twice as hot as your neck though. You can match the output between them so much easier while having the pickups positioned at the optimal height relative to the strings in order to have the string moving in the "sweet spot" of the pickups magnetic field.
Otherwise, I don't mind the headstock, I just think it's a bit quirky and I really do love the unique specs of this guitar.
I’m a regular viewer but I’m an outsider. I don’t own any Gibson’s but I love the history and I respect the brand immensely. Your documentation is fantastic! However. I don’t understand the point of buying a guitar like this. It seems like recently Gibson releases “rare” or “one off” or “limited runs” every other month. Do you think this will catch up with them? Whats the point of buying a brand new guitar with a price tag of $20k? What kind of person buys a brand new $20k Gibson? Do you think they will hold their value overtime? Are these releases just an easy way to make a quick buck off of Gibson collectors? Am I wrong to believe that since Gibson is making these super limited runs more common, that the used market overall for “rare” “limited” “one off” Gibsons will eventually start to deflate in value? These are the questions that I want answered. Love the videos!
FYI I hand bffed away the VOS of a J-45 Vintage (2019) and it looks way better and still vintage, as the laquer is still very thin and sunken in the grain of the guitar.
Oh good another Adam Jones guitar
Gibson uses veneer...Gibson's semi-hollowbodies like the ES-335 and ES-339 have tops and backs constructed of layers (either 3 or 4) of maple veneer. My understanding is that the veneers are assembled in successive cross-grain layers with the top layer having its grain longitudinal to the length of the guitar. The tops and backs are approximately 1/4" in thickness after layup.
I hope they make a standard run. I love unique guitars like this. Dean would get me close but it’s not the same. I’ve been looking for the 2001 re issue of the 59 version. Very hard to find.
The thing with that head stock, it flies in the face of having straight string pull. Does it matter or not?
I bet the long pot is so you can adjust it up for easy access in that otherwise really cramped control layout.
Hey Troggo, why is it the guitars in Mod shop (for all the good that it is) has imperfections and flaws? And why are the prices the same as fellow guitars without flaws?
Is it just me or is the burst on the front really uneven and inconsistent
Is it possible to weight the cavity in the body to help with the balance
20k and the string alignment over the fretboard is shifted towards the low E string... good one! 😂
So what’s the purpose of Adam using a different value pot in his guitfiddles??
Brake angle looks pretty full on I have a washburn thats very similar
Don't know if it's just me but the string spacing at the nut on the low E looks way off, too close to the edge of the nut
can you put the guitar under the black light , next time if you review a new gibson Murphy lab or relic guitar , want to see how it glow.
Hard Pass... The selector switch location...
So, that's where you draw the line huh?😂
@@shelbyavant5081 more to it than that. But it's a starting point. I don't care for the reverse silver and the price is completely ridiculous.
@@NitroModelsAndComics yeah, I think he made it pretty real at the end when he said less than 10 grand.
there was one in the murphy lab in the gibson garage when i went to nashville. It plays well but not 20k well
Please no more Adam Jones. I’m glad I learned who he was because he’s a great musician but we don’t need 5 Adam Jones signature models a week. It’s just too much. Also, too much Greeny and no mention of Peter Green or Gary Moore who owned the guitar and used it on iconic records for the majority of its life.
can you feel the finish checking ..? especially the neck, just curious, because i never hand on a gibson factory relic guitar .
Yes you can feel the checking in the neck, it’s subtle. I have one of the Gibson Les Paul Custom Adam Jones V2, they have the same Murphy Lab treatment, the checking on those guitars are incredible. I really love mine, I think beyond the VOS treatment those checking lines looks gorgeous
But do they look like real checking? You shouldn't be able to feel it.
They should have made it a Floyd rose guitar and then the crazy headstock would never be an issue. Duncan distortion is always a great pickup
Floyd and regular price
@@alijankhan3330it’s a marketing exercise from G, the price is almost irrelevant. There are thousands of ppl in the US alone that 20k is $20 to you, finding 50 fools is easy money.
That burst is so uneven on the top. Treble side has more silver than the bass side. Doesn't look $20000 good
"Slightly" overpriced.
Would Jones get a cut of sales or have a say in the pricing?
20,000 seems like an eyewatering amount of money?
The Deans had a maple top
Hamers did too
Weirdly- I liked the pick guard
Extra screws? More like extra screwed
I think it’s pretty sweet. Nothing like it I’ve seen and, yeah, love Tool too. Cool how the paint changes based on the angle you view it. Not for everyone, and that’s fine, but I like it.
What pickups
It’s mind boggling that you spent 20k on such garbage.
An Epi model with the same pickups and a normal headstock… yeah I’d be interested.
Would have been nice to hear the Epi rig vs Gibson without the pedals... I think it's be so close and maybe the Epi even better considering the Epi has the Seymour Duncan which the Gibson version ignored... Hard to compare tones when you dump huge amounts of modulation on top, but maybe that's to get people to spend more...
Even if money was no object, it's not for me. I would happily have bought a Greeny if I had the means, but not this.
20k ain't no way.
I like the pickups, but all V’s should have the input jack located there.
For 20k, you could live with a decent luthier while he makes your guitar. For 20k I'd want apollo 11 parts on it. Criminal.
Finally, its here! Hes not in love with that top, but hes in love with the awful spray job on the perimeter of the silverburst V??? WTH is going on with these perimeter spray jobs??? It SOUNDS good tho
Good job🥉🥉🥉
Thanks Sgt!
Did they give gold screws for the pickguard?
VOS screws
@@MfGrimm0503outside of the Murphy light age, nothing seems VOS’ed? Pickup covers, tuners, “goddy Gibson logo”, etc. Only thing I CAN note is the backplate screws backdropped on a gold Gibson custom medallion toggle plate. Outside of that, even the control cavity plate screws are silver. Check around 2:35 they’ll be there plain as day.
The pick guard should've been clear. That might have worked. They cut so many corners to charge so much. Not even close to worth 20k. If you bought this Trog, you're going to loose about 5 or 10 grand selling it.
I'm sure Trog and Gibson have a "deal" worked out.
Tool, or Fool.. they are mocking you with this guitar.
Dude you need a better amp for the dirt and distortion tones.
AMS actually has one in stock. #46
Really need to find a person to demo these guitars.

wow! i bought a dean flying v for 80$ and it surpassed all expectation! kinda funny that the Gibson version is 20k? and the v body guitars are the least expensive to produce! the dean ive got has the highest quality rosewood fret board ive ever seen on a production guitar. i cant see the value here 20k? you know they will make more if they need to right?
