Very nice demonstration of available tones/combinations. More versatile than I realized. I love Bohlinger's demos because his playing highlights all the sweet variations of the coil splits and whatnot.
I absolutely love this guy , apart from being a killer player he is a absolute gentleman .
Joey DiVario Matteo agreed
Been looking forward to a review of this for the longest time
These are the modern version of 2004 SG supremes, which I own. They are brutal for heavy , rock and do jazz and clean so great. And 24 frets. The maple cap is ideal. I honestly want to be buried with mine. I don't understand why people aren't buying all the stock out of these. I put it down to ppl just not having the opportunity to play them. Great review 👍
I've been playing an SG for 40 years, just picked up this Blueberry Modern to match my 335 , LOVE it
I hope that gibson will not discontinue this model. I love it! This is the SG that i have been waiting for. Or shall i say this is the guitar that i have been waiting for years!
Amazing guitar! Love it. Great presentation and playing - thanks!
This is an SG I was looking for! And the jack input in finally in the right place to me.
John's having some fun on this one. Blazing rijfs. Good review, very comprehensive.
That's a beautiful looking guitar. picking up my first Custom shop soon
Nice!!! Great demo, John. Thanks!
Great review mate ,now I want one in that color I reckon you nailed it bud top stuff
That maple cap looks amazing tho its not a veneer. love those burstbucker pro pickups 24 frets ebony fretboard with binding and Grover Keystone locking tuners sold !
Amazing guitar and demonstration
A very good sounding and cool guitar ...thanks for the great review!
Great review, John!
Great review man I watch your videos all the time. I got a 2019 hp sg and it sounds a lot like the one you just did . Very similar sound.
Do you know the difference? The modern and the high performance sg,s seem extremely similar . Are there two ranges? Or is one replacing the other? I’m a little confused in what to buy
Nice! I need to check one of these out soon. Great video!
Great job as always John.
I love that guitar SG sweet tone for sure.
Finally video on this guitar there's no videos of this on RUclips
There is an interesting extra tone variation on these pickups and pots configuration: both pickups selected; one as HB and the other as SC. Now, play and lower gradually the SC volume. The tone goes from thin (due to the presence of the SC), to fatter, as you roll down its volume. You can also lower the HB instead.
Love your playing. You definitely got your own voice.
You can tell he's not on autopilot mode like a lot of guitarists.
Man that thing has got tone for days!!
6:15 Full Humper-Love it John🤣
So glad they moved the strap button!
Oh dude, thx for this unique and special review!! I wanted to get one of these beginning this year but i took a sg special, which i love all over and because i had some money left i bought the epiphone version of this guitar *smile* and i have to say, also the epiphone version is so nicely to play and sounds great!!!
Beautiful guitar!
Super clear review, beautimus axe. That blue looks nice, too. In the past, Gibson has tried the blue burst thing and it’s just looked tacky. This is nicely dialed in
I just bought a 2021.. I pray its as bad ass as the one you have from 19!! Damn Im excited !!!
Excellent review - thanks. Would you say its possible to get a P90 sound from the coil tapping options?
Awesome guitar and demo 👋👋👍🎙️🎸🎵🎵🎵
Oh yeah.... great job..... again Sir!!
awesome.... they need to make a seafoam green one and offer more color options
True. The colours now are not my cup of tea at all.
Purdy Nice SG John. Seems great. About 8 years back I went for an Epiphone SG Special with the bolt on neck and simple one volume and tone pots with a kill switch. Tried all the SGs in Music City store here in Asheville and oddly this $179.00 model sang the most out of all of them unplugged. So I bought it. Tuners, pickups, and nut sucked, so upgraded to Grover tuners, tusq nut, and Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded set (JB and Jazz) pickups and switched out the volume push/pull pot to have the split coils option. Worked out great. The single coil mode really competes with the humbucker mode. Sounds pretty similar to this modern but only 22 frets. A very small sample of the pup with the bridge pickup in single coil mode. Don't let the pickup switch fool ya. Luthier wired it ass backwards, but I later fixed that. Would prefer the ebony fretboard over rosewood though. ruclips.net/video/EIHfm1iITPc/видео.html After all upgrades total investment of $375.00

I just ordered one of these beauties and will get it towards the end of January. I can’t wait! I love my SG standard but wanted something with a bit different humbuckers, 24 frets, and locking tuners. That thing looks stunning as well
Hey man congrats and best of luck with it!
Im thinking of getting one also. Could you let me know how it turns out? Thanks!
@@billgleeson3465 for sure man! I can definitely do that! I’m hoping it is similar to my standard and from most of the reviews I’ve seen that seems to be how they are. I can’t wait to get it
I was curious as I was going to get one of these. How did yours turn out? Would you buy it again?
I have a 2017 LP Standard T with this Blueberry Burst color. I love it!
Me too. Never letting it go.
Great demo, thanx! I want one now:)
I absolutely love that color
That's the first Gibson I've been interested in in a long time. And you rock like always.
I do like the split pickups
i love these!!!
John is amazing.
Just got a 2021. It's slightly different. Now comes with grover non locking mini's to remedy neck dive. Works like a charm. Strap button is back to the original location and the maple cap is now exactly half as thick as the guitar. So more maple, it literally is half maple, half mahogany. Looks great on the side of the guitar as the flame maple is visible through the finish. Probably now has a thicker maple cap than a Les Paul. Lovely guitar with a canadian made case.
Hey man! So now there is no neck dive in these!? That’s what’s been holding me back. Thanks!
@@EVH5150iii so it turns out the newer ones have the strap button behind the top horn, so that should fix the neck dive or at least decrease it immensely. I feel like people should be making new videos highlighting this because it’s a major reason people aren’t buying these
I was debating a Gibson sg modern as shown or a Gibson Les Paul Modern. Guitar stores around me do not have the sg modern, but have the standard which I love. If you had to pick one would you go with the sg modern again?
@@bobbeck1869 I’d go with the modern personally, but mostly because I think that the Les Paul is probably the most overrated guitar on Earth. The SG is perfect already but the modern takes all the tone elements of a LP and brings it to the playability and comfort of an SG, they say it’s a hybrid but it’s more like the perfect SG that checks all the boxes. No complains, especially if the strap button is on the top horn (eliminates neck dive almost 100%)
@@scobloosh8242 WOW. thanks for the feedback! I get to the point where I almost pull the trigger, but then stop. I guess because no stores have any around me to try. I was able to play the Gibson Tony Iommi Monkey SG and really liked it.
I’ve played the Les Paul Modern and I’d like to play this one also
The '19 'SG'Maestro I got as an exclusive from AMS has the '57's and itssa SCORCHER !
Thank you PG / JB ! Not a fan of Gibson's Burstbucker. Sounds harsh to me. I do LOVE all the modern features, though. I would love a coil split option on 490R/498T set. Great review, as always. Love the passion JB - cheers!
The 490R/498T pickups, I'm told, has a bit more of a higher output than the Burstbucker. Why would you want to split coil those instead? Personal preference, perhaps?
Sounds great.
It definitely has that SG sound.
Killer SG!
Two color's SG Modern, Blueberry Fade and Trans Black Fade
hi
is it hard to bend the notes after the 12th fret with these 24 frets ?
Great review!... THANKS MAN...
John, how does the maple top amd thicker body factor into weight compensation of the neck with the strap placement and neck placement?
well balanced... light. comfortable.
I work for Gibson and is an awesome company to work for!
That’s really cool, get them to do a seafoam green sg modern
Does it have the bridge closer towards the nut? It looks like it makes your strumming hand closer to the neck.
I think it's great that Gibson has such stiff competition that they have to give people stuff to demo. I love the place guitars are in today. They DID screw the pooch badly for about 20 years, though.
That looks good on you.
Very nice! I wish the would come out with a few more colors. A nice iced team burst, maybe a dirty lemon or tobacco burst.
With the maple cap, how does it compare in sound to a Les Paul?
good luck getting a top that nice. mine looks like a piece of plywood
You know when Gibson are desperado when they start listening to customers.
Absolutely true. Well said.
I guess you could say they finally came to their senses after being out ridin' fences for so long now.
The new guy in charge at Gibson is making a difference
Gotta love today's culture. Even when a company does something great people find a way to be negative and paint themselves as victims.
@@endocry PC libtard bullshit
In the flesh!
great demo.
this is blue and i miss my '64.
How's the neck dive with these heavy tuners?
THE PERFECT SG!!!!
It isn’t mate. It is freaking awesome but the neck dive on this one is super real!!!
@@noire1991 that is the one fatal flaw of the sg. Not enough for me to stop loving it though!
I had one of these 15 years ago they called it an SG Supreme only difference is the compound radius neck as far as I can see. Well and my guitar had 57 classic pickups as well.
Ok boomer
Want one 🤩
I've just bought a 2023 SG Modern in Blueberry burst and I have to admit it's a great guitar. Although Gibson went back to the classic strap pin location, it's not neck diving as regular SGs and remains in position while playing with a strap (I tried with a vinyl Couch strap). I also searched for the Keeley Mod Workstation after seeing that demo and sourced one brand new on Reverb. @johnbohlinger, you're costing me a lot with all your excellent demoes ;-)
idk why but I like the SG for Slide playing . Maybe it's the neck access ? I definitely like Humbuckers for Slide work.
Fitting that as you review a Gibson SG up above your head Sister Rosetta Tharpe looks down on you.
I wish the entire guitar had the blue finish near the neck pickup.
Didn't mention neck dive. Another reviewer said neck dive is still a big issue notwithstanding the relocation of the strap button.
Wow, awesome review. Curious about weight... did it feel heavy?
light
you're the timothy olyphant of guitar reviewers, please don't stop
Locking tuners?
The SG perfected.
On the Premier Guitar Website this sits immediately above an advertisement for Fender!
Yes yes yes !!!
Full maple cap? I must have this.....in TransBlack finish (I couldn't live with that blue).
Although it will still need a full "gutting" and rewiring because I'm sure it still has that pcb bullcrap in it but I like doing that to my Gibbys.
Foghorn Nosehorn None of the new range of Gibsons have the PCB, I believe! At least the Les Pauls don’t, doubt the SG does.
No PCB in the SG Modern for certain
I've got a pewter '85 SG I bought when I was 15. It's got one humbucker (w/tap) and two single coils...with a Kahler! It's as ugly as sin, but I love it.
overdrive or fuzz ?
Is it the pickups? Why does it sound muddy?
Is that a Prince photo back there on the wall?
Sister Rosetta
Is it me or does this maple top make it sound a little brittle. Where as standard sound midrange with a bite on top.
I wish Gibson would offer the new Modern SG's with the same Pelham Blue and Burgundy that the Modern Les Paul's are available in.
That being said these new Modern SG's and Les Paul's are possibly the best SG's and Les Paul's they have ever offered.
Lets see here.
Locking Grover tuners
Ebony fingerboard
Real mother of pearl inlays
Slim assymetrical neck
AA flame maple top
ALL the tones the push pull knobs give you are good
I love the finish but it REALLY bothers me how asymmetrical the flames are on this particular guitar
There's still a pretty good volume difference between humbuck and single.
I got the 2018 HP at a clearance discount of $1300 along with $900 trade value for a 2017 Hp that I got for $1200.
So I'm not about to complain too much about the volume drop since I didn't pay anywhere near full retail.
The 2018 has all the same electronics and specs as the guitar in this video except with rosewood instead of ebony and 57' classics instead of BurstBuckers and a zero fret nut which I honestly prefer and need because I down tune to C# and use thick tight strings.
So being able to adjust the nut has become almost just as crucial as being able to adjust the truss rod.
ANYWAY....There is a substantial volume loss with the coil-split and as you pointed out it is clearly noticeable in this video and even more so in person.
But It definitely does change the tone in an interesting way that is very usable directly thru a nice amp.
Not so much thru a bunch of effects pedals though- probably need to turn most of them off to use coil split.
Always great to see someone keeping it real and simply stating a fact instead of blind devotion or hatred.
Jeez! Of course, you're using just one coil instead of two! Use a compressor and that's it.
Somebody get that man a pedal board, STAT! :-)
Nice
Total guitar Lust- Fuckin Beautiful. That neck is slick and fast. Might be the next one...
I got one as my first Gibson last year and I’m in love with it, would recommend
this is sg-Lp considering what Gibson says:) but not sure i want alnico V for a neck pickup
Sweeeeeet!!!!!
wh Drive level ?
Not much of a modern man when it comes to guitars, but this guitar looks great
I loved my 74 SG...I switched out the tail hum bucket for a super distortion and put in a brass nut...and I loved the ebony neck. I won’t buy a guitar with rosewood neck...u can also use African Blackwood.
It must have had a ton of neck dive with an ebony neck. Bright as hell, too. Unless you meant "ebony fingerboard."
i can't make up my mind because of the alnico V in the neck pickup
Kinda like when you look at Michael Phelps physically and see that he was born to be a swimmer, this dude straight up looks like he was designed to play a guitar.
I wish they'd make sg with chunky neck.
Hey man. I have the 2018 sg hp in blue. It's a great guitar but has a terrible neck dive problem. Did Gibson improve it this year? If they didn't, do you know someone at Gibson that you can tell to fix the problem?
The Keto Life hey bud. I have the same guitar in Mojave Fade. Unfortunately you will need to move the strap button to the very edge of the neck heel. To get an idea- remove the strap button from where it is and without screwing it down yet- just line it up in the center of the neck heel where it traditionally goes but slide it all the way forward so that the outer rim of the button lines up with very front edge of the neck heel.
You could leave maybe a millimeter of room but not much more. The only draw back is that your thumb will probably be up against the button when you are playing the 24th fret and it's a nerve wracking mod the first time you do it- but you will have a supremely comfortable guitar.
Amazing difference.
The traditional spot in the center of the neck heel where its further back won't be enough- it's that extra inch or so that somehow makes all the difference.
I'm not actually suggesting that you do it because I wouldn't want to feel responsible if you don't like there because of how it can kinda seem like it's in the way when you are playing in the very highest position- I just want you to know that this will absolutely transform your SG from the way it feels now into something so perfect.
Just knowing that it's possible and that there is nothing inherently wrong with your guitar might make you feel better and someday you might be ready to go for it.
There is no other way that I have found because as long as that front strap button stays where it is- the guitar is not oriented properly to begin with- so trying to weigh the back end down or something just makes it more uncomfortable.
@@billyarsenault1970 wow. Please write Gibson and tell them about the mod. Maybe I'll take it to GC or Sam Ash and see if they will do it. No reason a 2k axe should have a headstock reaching for the floor. 👍
The Keto Life hey man. The deal is that on 24 fret SG's they put the strap button where it is on your guitar and the one in this video.
But they traditionally put it on the center of the neck heel- so they know.
Google some SG's and you can see where its supposed to go. I'm just suggesting that you move it even more forward than where they traditionally put it just to make it as comfortable as possible because some of the SG's with the traditional button placement still neck dive a bit.
So if you put it as forward as possible you will virtually eliminate any possibility of neck dive and also the guitar will be as comfortable as it can possibly be. The neck heel is a big chunk of mahogany with a substantial amount of finish on it so placing the strap button near the very edge of it is not an issue- it's not going to split or break off. I've done it on every SG I have ever owned so it's no big deal for me anymore- but I can understand that someone might be a bit weary. Anyway- you have a great guitar. I hope you keep it for life. Take care man.
@@billyarsenault1970 thanks man. Thanks for the tip. 👍
