These are the modern version of 2004 SG supremes, which I own. They are brutal for heavy , rock and do jazz and clean so great. And 24 frets. The maple cap is ideal. I honestly want to be buried with mine. I don't understand why people aren't buying all the stock out of these. I put it down to ppl just not having the opportunity to play them. Great review 👍

There is an interesting extra tone variation on these pickups and pots configuration: both pickups selected; one as HB and the other as SC. Now, play and lower gradually the SC volume. The tone goes from thin (due to the presence of the SC), to fatter, as you roll down its volume. You can also lower the HB instead.

Purdy Nice SG John. Seems great. About 8 years back I went for an Epiphone SG Special with the bolt on neck and simple one volume and tone pots with a kill switch. Tried all the SGs in Music City store here in Asheville and oddly this $179.00 model sang the most out of all of them unplugged. So I bought it. Tuners, pickups, and nut sucked, so upgraded to Grover tuners, tusq nut, and Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded set (JB and Jazz) pickups and switched out the volume push/pull pot to have the split coils option. Worked out great. The single coil mode really competes with the humbucker mode. Sounds pretty similar to this modern but only 22 frets. A very small sample of the pup with the bridge pickup in single coil mode. Don't let the pickup switch fool ya. Luthier wired it ass backwards, but I later fixed that. Would prefer the ebony fretboard over rosewood though. ruclips.net/video/EIHfm1iITPc/видео.html After all upgrades total investment of $375.00

Just got a 2021. It's slightly different. Now comes with grover non locking mini's to remedy neck dive. Works like a charm. Strap button is back to the original location and the maple cap is now exactly half as thick as the guitar. So more maple, it literally is half maple, half mahogany. Looks great on the side of the guitar as the flame maple is visible through the finish. Probably now has a thicker maple cap than a Les Paul. Lovely guitar with a canadian made case.

I was debating a Gibson sg modern as shown or a Gibson Les Paul Modern. Guitar stores around me do not have the sg modern, but have the standard which I love. If you had to pick one would you go with the sg modern again?

    • @scobloosh8242
      @scobloosh8242 Год назад

@@bobbeck1869 I’d go with the modern personally, but mostly because I think that the Les Paul is probably the most overrated guitar on Earth. The SG is perfect already but the modern takes all the tone elements of a LP and brings it to the playability and comfort of an SG, they say it’s a hybrid but it’s more like the perfect SG that checks all the boxes. No complains, especially if the strap button is on the top horn (eliminates neck dive almost 100%)

I've just bought a 2023 SG Modern in Blueberry burst and I have to admit it's a great guitar. Although Gibson went back to the classic strap pin location, it's not neck diving as regular SGs and remains in position while playing with a strap (I tried with a vinyl Couch strap). That being said these new Modern SG's and Les Paul's are possibly the best SG's and Les Paul's they have ever offered.
    Lets see here.
    Locking Grover tuners

I got the 2018 HP at a clearance discount of $1300 along with $900 trade value for a 2017 Hp that I got for $1200.
So I'm not about to complain too much about the volume drop since I didn't pay anywhere near full retail.
The 2018 has all the same electronics and specs as the guitar in this video except with rosewood instead of ebony and 57' classics instead of BurstBuckers and a zero fret nut which I honestly prefer and need because I down tune to C# and use thick tight strings.
So being able to adjust the nut has become almost just as crucial as being able to adjust the truss rod.
ANYWAY....There is a substantial volume loss with the coil-split and as you pointed out it is clearly noticeable in this video and even more so in person.
But It definitely does change the tone in an interesting way that is very usable directly thru a nice amp.
Not so much thru a bunch of effects pedals though- probably need to turn most of them off to use coil split.
Always great to see someone keeping it real and simply stating a fact instead of blind devotion or hatred.

The Keto Life hey bud. I have the same guitar in Mojave Fade. Unfortunately you will need to move the strap button to the very edge of the neck heel. To get an idea- remove the strap button from where it is and without screwing it down yet- just line it up in the center of the neck heel where it traditionally goes but slide it all the way forward so that the outer rim of the button lines up with very front edge of the neck heel.
You could leave maybe a millimeter of room but not much more. The only draw back is that your thumb will probably be up against the button when you are playing the 24th fret and it's a nerve wracking mod the first time you do it- but you will have a supremely comfortable guitar.
      Amazing difference.
The traditional spot in the center of the neck heel where its further back won't be enough- it's that extra inch or so that somehow makes all the difference.
I'm not actually suggesting that you do it because I wouldn't want to feel responsible if you don't like there because of how it can kinda seem like it's in the way when you are playing in the very highest position- I just want you to know that this will absolutely transform your SG from the way it feels now into something so perfect.
Just knowing that it's possible and that there is nothing inherently wrong with your guitar might make you feel better and someday you might be ready to go for it.
There is no other way that I have found because as long as that front strap button stays where it is- the guitar is not oriented properly to begin with- so trying to weigh the back end down or something just makes it more uncomfortable.

@@billyarsenault1970 wow. Please write Gibson and tell them about the mod. Maybe I'll take it to GC or Sam Ash and see if they will do it. No reason a 2k axe should have a headstock reaching for the floor. 👍

The Keto Life hey man. The deal is that on 24 fret SG's they put the strap button where it is on your guitar and the one in this video.
But they traditionally put it on the center of the neck heel- so they know.
Google some SG's and you can see where its supposed to go. I'm just suggesting that you move it even more forward than where they traditionally put it just to make it as comfortable as possible because some of the SG's with the traditional button placement still neck dive a bit.
So if you put it as forward as possible you will virtually eliminate any possibility of neck dive and also the guitar will be as comfortable as it can possibly be. The neck heel is a big chunk of mahogany with a substantial amount of finish on it so placing the strap button near the very edge of it is not an issue- it's not going to split or break off. I've done it on every SG I have ever owned so it's no big deal for me anymore- but I can understand that someone might be a bit weary. Anyway- you have a great guitar. I hope you keep it for life. Take care man.
