WR Smith's Grasshopper Clock: Part 2 The Feet

  • The feet for the clock are turned using both a shop made trepanning tool and form tool on an old Atlas lathe and a CNC Sherline lathe.

    Great video Robert, lots of info. Why not leave in the Sherline at the end to polish ?? Instead of moving the piece to another lathe??? Ralph

      Hi Ralph...notice the white rag on my Atlas bed when I polish?...on the Sherline that rag on the bed is too close to the center-line for my liking...I worry about it catching up...with the Atlas I have more elbow room and I feel better about the procedure...kinda personal preference I guess...bob

      I use Kling wrap on the Sherline CNC and my 1980's Sears/Sherline...when polishing...most times...sometimes I forget...bob (:

    Bob, great video. Can you do a 2 minute video on your home made bit that you used to cut relief in your forming tool?

      Joe...that is a regular slip pin...they are made from some type of spring steel...I center drilled a piece of aluminum to fit the pin and I pressed the slip pin into it...now I had something to hold it as I hand held the piece at approximately 8 degrees and rotated it slowly on my bench grinder wheel until the point that was forming on the end of the slip pin fit into my drilled hole about .25"...then I turned it 90 degrees and ground it into a D bit configuration...I have thick skin but I bet I'd take a lot of flack for this...but I love the bits...I actually have about 6 different sizes...I make a bunch of form tools...I've got a Kennedy box that is 90% full of HSS bits for different jobs...next video I'll make a couple more form tools that work quite well on a small Sherline......bob

      Bob, when you say slip pin, is that the same thing as a roll pin? I went back a looked at the tool again was not able to see the end. The flat part of the D bit is at the split of the pin? Thank you for answering this newbies questions. I appreciate that you take the time.

      Hi Joe...I'm getting old...stupid mistakes like calling a roll pin a slip pin is way too common for me lately...ur right it is a roll pin...take a look at 7:05 minutes in...the pin is sitting on my vice waiting for it's turn in the chuck...and yes the split of the pin is in the center of the flat part of the D bit...that should help, but next grasshopper clock video is the making of the pillars and I'll be making at the least one new form tool using a roll pin bit...let me know what you need to see and I'll slip it in for sure...thanks for the question...I learn too...bob...FYI I just got back from lunch with an old clock-maker friend who I still make parts for...and tomorrow I've got a pretty small ratchet to make for a carriage clock he's working on...think I might try for a video...I think it might be interesting for some folk...and trying to get a video of it might be a bit of a interesting challenge for me too...stay tuned...

    What about using oil to cut down the chatter ?? Ralph

      Good question Ralph...I believe brass is kinda self-lubricating...and sulfur based cutting fluids can stain the brass...that being said...I do keep Tap Magic nearby...the only chatter I could not stop on these feet was the plunge cut straight into the brass rod with no side relief to each side of the radius...I kinda expected this to happen...with a small lathe like the Sherline the amount of cutting edge needs to be small on form tools...by cutting the relief on either side the cutting edge size was cut in half...I most likely could have made that cut by plunging in like that using the back gears on my Atlas...but I like to plunge cut on the Sherline because of the speed control...brass loves to dig in (that is the reason I use zero top rake on lathe cutters with brass and I polish the backside of drill bits before using on brass)...if you dig in making one of these radii...you end up throwing the part away...just my thoughts...bob
