I hate how people pretend that Adele suddenly got thin and lost the weight in an instant. If you watched her career from hee first Album in you can see how she gradually lost weight. And the nobody really saw her for a year or so where she just continued her journey and suddenly everyone is offended.
That's true too!
She had weightloss surgery
She earned it and looks great 👍 and now gets hate for getting healthy , it's insane what some people do to deny their obesity.
I hate how some people act like getting thinner is somehow anti-body-positivity. Body positivity to me is about loving your body no matter what it looks like, but I also think that loving your body is taking good care of it. Some people take great care of theirs and weigh 220 lbs, others 110. If Adele changed her habits and lost weight, that in no way comments on anybody else’s health/body.
Also, even if she did have surgery (and I choose to believe her that she did not), it’s HER body. Let her do what she wants! It affects you in no way.
I hate how people were angry about it like she had any obligation to stay a particular size to suit others.
It reminds me of when Cardi B got her teeth fixed, there was loads of discussion around that and people said they “missed her old teeth” she pointed out they did not know her old teeth personally so didn’t understand why they missed them.
Yup!
omg what a great answer
@@Tania-rg7jp very true or if you’re happy in your own skin. They envy you body autonomy!
To me body positivity should be summarize to that sentence : I love and respect my body because it took me that far in life so I would take care of it in all the aspect with the knowledge that I acquired so I can feel good in my life journey.
Totally true!
I’m in Ireland and there was a rather disturbing article written by a plus size Irish journalist about being betrayed when Adele lost weight. It was rather sad 😞
Did you see the article calling operation transformation fatphobic ?
@@becksmurphy8311 I actually hate that programme 😂😂
I saw that! Sooooo ridiculous.
Yeah, I'm also in Europe and I do feel like the mass reaction here hasn't been very positive for Adele actually. She's still laying low as she hasn't released any new music in a while and most people probably aren't aware she lost a lot of weight but if she releases a MV, I'm pretty sure people are gonna have thoughts because for so long she was considered a larger bodied icon.
Oh no. I'll have a look at that
I feel like Lizzo is damned if she does, damned if she doesn’t. She’s either getting grief for not trying to slim down or for trying to. She wasn’t promoting or profiting off of this stuff really. And have you seen her on stage?! She has so much energy and dance skill.
If she's making tic toks about it that's promoting it she's a public figure not a regular joe.
Lizzo rocks. She could've made a living playing the effing flute. I hope she keeps making music.
I understand, but the diet she promoted was problematic. That's just a separate issue than the general backlash against her bopo identity
I feel like she wouldn’t get “damned” if she tried to slim down in a healthy and sustainable way.
She actually was promoting it
Actually a lot of people trashed Adele when she lost weight too. People need to mind their own business and focus on their health and let other people do the same.
This is very true! Adele was given a lot of trouble when she first lost weight.
Yeah, she did. And it was public. This is very disappointing from Abby.
@@melissaenslin4 Idk about that.. she trended on twitter after these posts and most of the comments were positive, and congratulating her on the weightloss despite being a mother and in a middle of a divorce, of course there are always gonna be haters, but Lizzo encountered wayy more backlash especially since she's "supposed" to be body positive
You're right. I could have gone into more detail here but I wasn't going to spend a whole video analyzing their respective Instagram comment section. Adele did get back lash, particularly for the speed/ extreme weight loss that seemed to happen overnight (especially bc the diet itself was so bogus and strange). And while there definitely was some criticism from the bopo community, it wasn't nearly to the extent that lizzo experienced with regards to bopo. That was my point. Not about the weight loss itself.
some did but not as much as lizzo
What frustated me was seeing the people who did defend Lizzo, doing it by applauding her for making healthy choices instead of talking about how bodily autonomy is a right that everyone has.
Thanks for sharing your perspective!
‘Healthy’ choices...
I'm really glad that this video touches on systemic racism. Especially from a Canadian RUclipsr. We often look to the States when we talk about racism, as though it doesn't exist in our own communities, but racism permeates everywhere, and our institutions (and the media, as we see in this video) simply perpetuate these inequities. Thank you for deconstructing a glaring double standard here.
For sure! I'm so glad that part was helpful
yes!! im black and i didn't even think about this perspective!! so interesting thanks to both of you!!
This is the perspective that many conservatives have, like myself have but we are often called racist for arguing it. It’s more racist or prejudice for people to be put on a platform for just the way they look instead of their character and skill. It’s not equality. A white or skinny person would never be put on a pedestal that way. It’s like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said we need to judge each other not by the color of their skin (or how they look) but by the content of their character.
🙌🏻
The USA has racism and hate over- flowing for years. It makes me angry and sad. Many of us wish we lived on Canada. I'm thinking Toronto. :)
Abbey, thank you for consistently contributing a much-needed thoughtful & scientific voice to the conversation in regards to dieting/trends! in the age of being bombarded by so many unsafe practices, this channel is needed now more than ever.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad it's helpful ❤️
@@AbbeysKitchen im so glad you're leaving more contextual responses
Detoxing is not bs! A lot of people have healed themselves through detoxing and a whole plant based diet/lifestyle
Abbey brought race into this and I’m so grateful. Then she consulted a Black woman and I’m living.
This is how it’s done.
What Danni said about the Mammy trope is 100% right. Bigger black women are often pushed into roles of responsibility and caring for others even when they didn’t ask for it
That's how allyship should be. Always. Other people need to take note.
thank you for going in depth with the correlation between fat phobia and race I really appreciated that you took the time to consult with a another black creator
I'm so glad that was helpful!
@@AbbeysKitchen I agree, along with the last bopo video, it was incredibly insightful and I believe this direction of partnering with others when its helpful is a great idea!

Love how Abbey approaches topics with such intelligence, openness, and dignity towards the person she is reviewing, and to herself. Would love to be able to express myself like this!
Thank you so much!
I feel like body positivity is forced on to bigger women of color. Whether we like it or not, we're always seen as advocates for this movement, especially when they're already famous. Women of color, of any body size, can never just exist on Earth.
FACTS
I'm sorry, and I understand that this is not fair. I appreciate you sharing your perspective
This is SUCH a victim response...they did the same to Adele but let me guess, that was the white privilege. Seriously, no one sees WOC as advocates for this movement and WOC can exist just fine it’s just SOME WOC who are so miserable with their choices they choose to believe it’s the worlds fault...GTFOH
Lizzo made herself a body positivity person. Don’t act like other people put that on her she did that to herself
@@cherrywilson6267 hush
Her “nutritionist” should not be a nutritionist
@lucci gucci that’s my point
I don't know about elsewhere but in Canada, "nutritionist" is not a protected word meaning anyone can claim to be a nutritionist without it being fraudulent. A registered dietician is the one that's an actual profession. Not sure if I am really using the right terms here, but what I am saying is that maybe her nutritionist is the nutritionist kind rather than the regulated field of dieticians.
It is definitely concerning advice!
That's so problematic, as Nutritionist is protected (an equivalent to RD) in some provinces (Quebec, Alberta and Nova Scotia), but not in other provinces - it creates SO MUCH confusion with the public. Some thing needs to be done..
Her nutritionist likes to say she is certified by two companies so people won’t look farther than that but one company got shut down by the fda and the other company is just a two week course anyone can take
I love how you can’t say detox with the air quotes. It’s just built in now 😃with how bogus that concept is
Abbey, your allyship though 👍🏾 I appreciate you bringing women of color onto your channel who can speak to these nuances, unpacking these nuances for yourself and acknowledging your privileges and even limitations in some areas. We love to see it 💕
Thank you ❤️
It’s so frustrating that human beings can’t just eat whatever they want and can’t be as fat or as small as they are. 🙄 It will be amazing when we don’t need to have these conversations anymore.
For sure!
It’s not that simple. There are people including celebrities that are promoting and showing other people unhealthy or toxic ways of eating so naturally as humans we want to know if this information is true or not or how good the products are that these people are promoting, thank goodness we have channels like Abbys that help us out with this. People can eat whatever they want and be however small or big. That’s not the point of this at all.
I disagree with you about people being as fat or as small as they want purely because of my own struggles with body image and my relationship with food, and the fact that I have family that are obese and it has dramatic impacts on their health. That has not only affected them, but me as well. I know that a stranger being big or small doesn't affect me directly, but it does affect the people closest to them as well as the health system. Especially if they suffer with an ED, of course people can do want they want but I hold on to that belief. Feel free to disagree with me.
I think it's weird she said she was not doing the detox to loose weight. I mean what if she does want to? There is nothing wrong with that ( I am not saying the detox is a good idea or that she wants to loose weight) I just think it is wrong that she has to clarifie her reassons. At the end her body is hers.
She stated that she wanted to reduce bloating and an upset digestive system after a vacation of heavy drinking and spicy foods. No losing weight and no diet. Just trying to settle her system.
@@bryngarrity5548 thanks! I need to clarify my comment, because I didn't meant that she wanted to loose weight, just that if she wanted to, it wouldn' t be a bad thing
@@isabellalopez5721 it would not be at all. I think the mindset around "fatphobia" is actually getting toxic as hell. I am 250 and am actively trying to lose weight. i did a recent blood test and my doc says i'm 100% healthy with great numbers. but. i FEEL this weight. i am a big person, always have been (a healthy weight for me would be 180-190). and i've always been an athlete. But slowly the number on the scale has climbed since i graduated college and i am no longer healthy. this attack on people who want to lose weight is getting out of hand. obesity is PROVEN to be a contributing factor for many diseases. At some point, humans have to overcome to kneejerk reaction to accuse people of fatphobia and realize that being overweight/obese/fat is not inherently healthy. just like being super skinny and fit is not inherently healthy.
also, people just need to stop saying "detox" full stop. unless you have liver or kidney issues, you're detoxing constantly. ugh haha
@@bryngarrity5548 yes I agree, "fatphobia" Is pretty toxic. It's pretty sad how society makes people with natural big bodys feel like they are doing something wrong. In general society nowadays is messed up as hell. skinny does not equal healthy and a big body does also not equal unhealthy ( like in your case), but in general people doesn't see it like this. I mean somedays I am still struggling with my own body (and I have an average body.) and this problems I have with myselfe come from what society and even my mother have teach me, and that Is just sad. ( I am sorry if my English is bad, I am trying)
@@bryngarrity5548 I agree with you 100%. I am overweight as well and even if the tests don’t show, I feel it. I work a very active job and I want to be my best for it. I’m trying to do better and eat healthier for the sake of how I feel. I want to be my best at my job because I love it.
Scream it louder and LOUDER. I don't know how you get away with this much forward straight talk but I'm SO here for it.
Unfortunately, there are people who come after her because of the straight talk. People don’t like experts much these days :(
I love her though!
I'm glad you find it helpful!
To be fair Adele also got a lot a backlash for her weight loss saying she "starved" herself & didn't do it in a healthy manner and articles asking why she felt the need to lose the weight
You're right. I could have gone into more detail here but I wasn't going to spend a whole video analyzing their respective Instagram comment section. Adele did get back lash, particularly for the speed/ extreme weight loss that seemed to happen overnight (especially bc the diet itself was so bogus and strange). @@AbbeysKitchen Completely understand and I wasn't trying to take away the backlash Lizzo has received & that unfortunately her race comes into play where Adele & Rebels didn't
The things Danni said literally blew my mind!!! Makes me think about how I have so a LOT of self education to do about body positivity and it’s connection to race...
I'm glad it was helpful!
I think people were more annoyed at the diet culture side of things than they were at Lizzo herself, you brought up Adele as well and I remember there was so much drama about that. I think people have gotten to the stage where they are saying enough is enough
I understand that as well!
No, they are putting all their expectations and desires in another people and getting mad when they don't corresponde or want to make a change, both of them were attached for made their choices and live their lives. In general I hate Lizzo's diet and definitely wouldn't work for me, but seems that she is liking and more than that, seems she is in a construction of a better relationship with food and exercise, and more important her health and good well
I have to disagree about Adele being praised, I was shocked by the high number of people saying they felt let down when Adele lost weight because they had lost an idol who looked like them. In fact I would say the negative reaction was much much louder than the positive, at least where I am, in Ireland.
You're right. I could have gone into more detail here but I wasn't going to spend a whole video analyzing their respective Instagram comment section. Adele did get back lash, particularly for the speed/ extreme weight loss that seemed to happen overnight (especially bc the diet itself was so bogus and strange). Yes, but WHO was the majority slamming Lizzo...other black women!!
But it's about the disproportionate amount of hate lizzo got, and the underlying reason behind that
It's not that white people never face hardships, it's that they don't have those hardships with race related hardships on top
@@Jenifer-ij3qz ypu couldn't be further from the truth please stop speaking on black people period. Y'all are ridiculous. You try to spin a false narrative that it's black women attacking lizzo to stir conceal the fact that it's non black people specifically white people constantly tearing her down . You people disgust me
@@theeharajukubarbie8045 But you're doing exactly what you asked Jenifer not to. Jennifer said black people do it. You say don't talk on black people ever. Then you go and say "white people do it". Like don't do it yourself, about any race, it's not right when anyone generalises races.
Yas queen go off 🔥 love your channel cause it actually promotes being healthy WITHOUT restricting! Thanks for all that you do!
I'm so glad it's helpful!
Yasssss we have livers to detox, not foot pads and herb baths 🛀
Yup!
But those feel and smell nice too🥺
The scam that foot pads are.proven to work since they can change to dark colors, as if dirty business removal occurred, are a total rip off. Thank you Abbey for calling this out as a scam!!
I really appreciate that you sought out/gave space on your platform to a POC’s perspective on this issue. I know that this is what SHOULD happen all the time but it often doesn’t. So thank you.
Her “detox” or something more restrictive is the kind of shit I used to do after eating unhealthy for a day or many days. I thought I was “resetting” my body. It never works and I still have issues with binge eating. I appreciate your videos for letting people know this stuff DOES NOT work. As a plus size person, believe me, this stuff doesn’t make you skinny.
Edit: also, I do not blame Lizzo for this. I appreciate you adding that we should be angry with diet culture. I have done this type of stuff way before Lizzo was ever even on the music scene. I appreciate that she was just trying to feel better, I think most of us can relate to that.
It's definitely a problematic diet. Thank you for sharing your experience
Can we just stop it with the “detox” diets already....
😫
It's valid for anyone to want to lose weight, however she should try and set an example to lose weight GRADUALLY and SAFELY, because that detox crap aint it. Also, she might just bounce back to her old ways of eating because the fad diet is not sustainable.
Yeah, exactly it would've been a really nice change to see a celebrity "long-hauling" a weightloss journey.
Except she wasn’t trying to lose weight and it wasn’t a diet. It was a week of getting her body back to “normal” aka not bloated and sore after eating and drinking on vacation. It’s not a diet and it’s barely a detox. I do not understand why so many people got up in arms about it.
For sure. I discussed the problematic diet and why we should be mad that she's promoting it. However, that's a whole separate issue though than me discussing the general backlash against her bopo identity
@@AbbeysKitchen I agree 100% with your points in the video, keep up the great work! :)
I lost 70 pounds in 6 months and have maintained for 11 years (no detox crap). I believe weight loss is mental 💕
I use to be obsessed and "detox" with lemon water every few days. Every since I stopped and started enjoying my favorite coffee (cream and sugar with mocha swirl) while keeping my same balanced diet - I haven't gained a pound and I don't feel the need to "detox". We need to enjoy our lives as women, media and the internet poisons our mind and self love. Ladies eat! Just listen to your doctor but don't sacrifice delicious foods or skip out on gatherings because of food. Be happy!
Wow I can’t believe I just found you this week but I am so thankful. Your content, approach, and knowledge is so needed!! This video is amazing and needs to be shared! 💕💕
That siren sound with noise canceling headphones freaked me out so much😂😂
Sorry! 😂
I like how you mentioned the commercialisation of the body positivity movement, and how Lizzo was just shoved into the role of body positive activist by simply existing. Wouldn’t it be nice if we lived in a world where people were appreciated for their talents and their character, as opposed to how they look?
LMFAOOO Abbey really said “Truth Hurts” too good 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

This video was great Abbey, the tight amount of scrutiny into the "detox" diet but also the right amount compassion and understanding. Hit the nail on the head
Ms. Abbey Sharp, does your brain ever hurt from being 1) so well spoken and 2) speaking to the public in laymen’s terms that we can access and understand? I’m a huge fan, but I wish you didn’t partner with Built Bar. They had moldy bars sent out last year which they didn’t handle well and some controversy regarding donations to BLM that they advertised they were going to do but didn’t. I’ll continue to watch but wanted to be sure to let you know in case you didn’t.
I hate these kinda promotions. She’s the same one going on about how you can get all these Nutrients from normal food yet advertises a bar specifically for that.

I agree that a lot of large WOC are automatically assumed to be body positivity icons and it’s not fair. It’s happened to Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson and many more. With Lizzo though, she has centred her entire brand around being body positive. I do not think her body is anyone else’s business to criticize her and she should do whatever she wants to do with her body but she can’t be surprised when people are confused when she switches from being body positive to doing a juice cleanse.
Thank you abbey sharp coz you have taught me to love the body that I am in. When I was new to my fitness journey, I always feel guilty for whenever I tend to eat something that is “unhealthy”. I never thought of the overlap between how we treat bigger black women and the mammy trope. Very interesting idea
hey abbie! i’ve always wondered: is it “better” to say eat your needed calories in a day of nothing but unhealthy food, or go over your needed intake to get in healthier foods? great vid too!
I think the best is to try not to have just unhealthy food for an entire day. If you crave some seemingly unhealthy things like burgers, you can find some options that give you absolutely no nutritional value, but also delicious options that have great nutritional value.
Nevertheless it is better to eat some more calories to get in your micros if you're lacking that day, in order to give your body what's necessary to function as it's supposed to and manage to process better everything you ate, maybe fruit with low calories, veggies etc.
Neither is good. It’s doesn’t matter that the food is “healthy” if you eat more then necessary you will gain weight. Too much of good thing is still too much. Having unhealthily food may mean you lack proper nutrients and can become deficient
@@stephaniesalvador9223 I agree on that, I just think the question was more like (correct me of course if I am wrong) if you've already had your needed macros aka calories through junk food for instance, and in terms of your health and functionality not strictly weight gain, then would it be better to leave your body deprived of micros for a whole day, or eat a little more to get some in too? I think that with some low calorie but nutri-dense foods you should try to.
let's see what abbey will give as advice it's actually a really nice, to the point, question
I would recommend fuelling yourself on “healthy” food and by that nutritionally dense - this will fuel you better and you will have a more natural eating pattern and eat enough for your body. However, that being said “unhealthy” foods are fine and have these but don’t make them the staple. You won’t have energy or feel good etc and your body may be lacking many vital nutrients
can you please review weight loss clips from popular tv shows (new girl, friends, Brooklyn 99, etc)
Great idea!

You made a fantastic point about how white women were celebrated for losing weight and Lizzo was demonised
For sure!
Adele was ripped to shreds in Europe for loosing weight, plus i've heard many plus size girls on the internet say "oh we have lost Adele, now we only have Lizzo left". They didn't think about that maybe wanting to loose weight was her personal choice.
@@magdalliee yeah I'm a black woman but I dont see where people have been celebrating white womans weightloss and demonizing black womans weightloss. Like Adele and Rebel Willson are 2 examples of white women who have been shamed for losing weight
It was a lie, which she's admitted. White celebrities do NOT a get a pass on weight loss, Rebel Wilson and Adele have both been ripped to shreds for losing weight.
I’m not trying to be adversarial but can you provide a recent example of a white female celebrity who was praised for weight loss? I’m not saying black women aren’t often criticized harder or held to a higher standard in many regards but most celebrities now get slammed for losing weight, regardless of race.
I love this video and we have to get away from body positivity meaning big bodies staying fat and rather it meaning being positive about the body you are in. The body positive movement will cancel anyone who tries to lose weight that is insane. It’s should be about loving yourself through your journey!

Yes yes yes I’m so glad that this was discussed !!! Also could you review Jenn Im ?
On the list!
I suggest the book fear of the black body, I added a quick review on it.
The author argues that the contemporary ideal of slenderness is, at its very core, racialized and racist. Indeed, it was not until the early twentieth century, when racialized attitudes against fatness were already entrenched in the culture, that the medical establishment began its crusade against obesity. An important and original work, Fearing the Black Body argues convincingly that fat phobia isn’t about health at all, but rather a means of using the body to validate race, class, and gender prejudice.
Oprah and Jennifer Hudson come to mind as black women who are public about weight loss and praised for it.
Yes that's true!
Exactly I really don't think it was a race thing. In the racist society that we live in, everything has racial undertones, but I think it is more to do that Lizzo (wheteher she likes it or not) is apart of the bopo movement. She's always preaching about loving here body (the belly insta post) and she does and wears whatever she wants. Which is amazing! Fat ppl in our society are taught to be more reserved and Lizzo challenges that. Adele use to practice that notion. She always wore black, long sleeve gowns or maxi dresses. She never once talked about her body pre-weight loss reveal and started wearing more revealing clothes after. I am most upset that the guest speaker said a factor of the death of George Floyd and Brianna Taylor was their weight. Brianna Taylor was sleeping in her bed. It is really sad to hear someone say that.
@@phenominiallmusic The way I interpreted that comment about George Floyd and Breonna Taylor was different. I don't think she meant to say that their weight was a factor in their being killed. I think what she was trying to explain was that body positivity for people of color is not just about weight, but about being a person of color too. So if you are large and a person of color, there is an extra layer of complication with how the mainstream public perceives or treats you, but that this is also true for any person of color. That by simply not being white, you are in a more complex, possibly dangerous position when you exist in the world (or at least in much of the U.S.).
@@BC-np8cb you put that so well!!!
@@BC-np8cb Okay that makes so much more sense and I completely agree. Thank you for explaining this
Hi Abbey, I recently just saw your videos pop up on my recommended page with Jenn Ims video and I've been binging since. I love how you acknowledge important points in your videos and I just love your attitude towards these issues! Most definitely creates conversation that is much needed, yes queen!!! I've just subscribed and can't wait for future vids.
Omg the detox foot pads 🤦♀️ no celebrity has excuses for not knowing that shit like that is complete bullshit
I was surprised when I saw her pushing the detox stuff. I guess she's officially Hollywood now. I remember when she became a weight watchers spokesperson and people flipped out before as well. It was pretty weird.
OMG ABBEY! You totally heard my comment a while back where I requested you discuss the intersection of race and fatphobia! thank you!
I hope the video was helpful!
I wanted to say I REALLY appreciated your note on how we are all on different stages of our own body positivity journey and not to rip on each other essentially. I think this is true for a lot of things in life. Most of us are trying our best with the tools we have. It's really hard to blame a person since they have had a whole life leading up to this point, were their parents supportive and nurturing, what did they learn in school, where are they from, etc the list goes on. So thank you for speaking up like "hey, we are all on this journey, lets be kind to each other".
Thank you so much! I'm so glad it was helpful
I appreciate how you discussed the intersectionality between racism and larger body sizes for black women. I think Lizzo definitely faces an unfair double standard.
Great video! I often get sad when there finally seems to be celebrities in larger bodies so you actually feel represented on screen, but then diet culture always seems to find them and you have to see their "miracle weight-loss" on the cover of a magazine or in a video headline. I don't care what other people do with their bodies, but it does seem to send a message that they "weren't good enough" as they were. Wishing happiness to all!
Thank you for sharing! Glad you found the vide helpful
Well done Abbey! I appreciate your enlightening us about the racism issue behind the body positivity movement. This is a very interesting point that I would not have checked in with myself (white, average sized woman) otherwise. I always enjoy hearing your no BS commentary about the damaging diet culture we live with.
I'm so glad it was helpful!
When someone says “toxin” in relation to health/fitness/eating style… I immediately stop listening. If you have a liver and kidneys, you are already ridding your body of “toxins.”
Danni was such a good guest. I would love to see her again 😁
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Abbey can you please make a video about food as related to Interstitial Cystitis? Specifically, how to eat intuitively with IC and some recommendations for meals? I’m struggling. Thanks!
Thanks for the suggestion!
IC is an actual nightmare to manage, it would be nice to have some advice on how to eat aside from "cut out sugar and any acidic foods", great suggestion!
@@niamhfitzgerald9473 I was just recently diagnosed and I’m miserable every single day. Thank you for speaking up.it can feel very lonely.
Really good suggestion!
@@ashleyluna9605 I am terribly sorry to hear that. I too have IC and I know the pain and isolation it causes. I am crossing my fingers that you can find relief somehow.
If you haven't already, I highly recommend getting a hot water bottle.
Excellent, so insightful, loved hearing from Danni. Sharing this with my friends - some of who, sadly, supported Lizzo in this.
I'm glad it was helpful!
Another amazing in-depth video. Thank you for this!
So glad it was helpful!
You go Abbey!!! The truth does hurt and that's why we are in this craziness that we are in today because nobody wants to admit the truth.
Yup! I'm glad you found the video helpful 👍
Your delivery was perfect! Also, I appreciate that you invited a guest to share their views.
me watching abbey for the first time: why is she so mean?
me watching abbey now: OH THAT SASS YASSSS
lots of love abbey ❤️ love your videos
❤️thanks!
I did a month long liver detox a nutritionist put me in for a month and it elevated my liver enzyme because I continued the detox shake after the fact.
omg so grateful to hear Danni's input!
I'm glad that was helpful!
I never thought about how society perceives Lizzo vs. Adele. Thank you for sharing such insightful information, Danni!
When did we start feeling like we have to make our bodies do what they’re already doing? Riddle me this - look at all the people who are NOT doing these cleanses and somehow NOT dying? How is this possible? Perhaps our bodies are a step ahead of the detox trend.
Yeah, just maybe, JUST MAYBE, Our bodies are designed to do it. Wouldn’t it be SUPER AWESOME AND CONVINCE if we had a WHOLE ASS ORGAN for this? 🙃
@@juipiterg1580 Nah, probably just need green juice. 😂
Totally!!
I’m obsessed with your videos! I’m learning to gain a healthy relationship with food (I used to only eat bad food and I gained a lot of weight and it made me look down on myself). I’ve been working on eating better and working out without the main focus on weight lost, but on eating well. I’ve not only felt better with my energy, but I feel better about my self-imagine! I don’t even dread healthy eating, because I still can eat things I love!
Thanks, Abbey. Seriously, these videos have been so so helpful!
Thank you for sharing! I'm so glad they are helpful 😊
I loved the video, only one bit I have issues with is the fact that Adele received no backlash or very little backlash for her weight loss which I feel is not true, a lot of people were upset.
But it's about the disproportionate amount of hate lizzo got, and the underlying reason behind that
It's not that white people never face hardships, it's that they don't have those hardships with race related hardships on top
I think people misunderstand what body positivity or self-love is about. As a fat woman, to me, body positivity and self love mean that i should not base my value as a human being on my body size, whether fat or slim. I can be fat and kind, loving, intelligent or i can be fat, unpleasant, unkind, etc. They are separate things. I think the problem is that fat phobic people ascribe negative personal attributes to fat bodies e.g. lazy, dirty, smelly, etc. And ofcourse, also ascribe subjective beauty standards to fat bodies. As a fat woman, i can accept that even though I'm healthy now, science and medicine tell me that i am at higher risk for health problems and i can choose to lose weight for my health and still be body positive and love aspects of my current body while shrinking it. If lizzo wants to lose weight, she can/should!
Thank you for sharing your perspective!
@@AbbeysKitchen Thank YOU! I love your channel. Now ofcourse, losing weight in a healthy, balanced way should be the goal, instead of bogus detox approaches.
Exactly!!!!
I love the way you put this👏🏽
I love that this video took an intersectional approach. As a Black woman I find that conversations about gender and size tend to centre White women and conversations about race tend to centre Black men. But this example of Lizzo is 100% intersectionality at play. I would never blame Lizzo for wanting to change her body. There's privilege associated with moving through the world in a smaller body, with all the societal pressures/hurdles Black women face already, it's understandable that if diet was in fact her motivation, part of her may have wanted to move through the world free of the burdens fatness adds to Blackness and womanhood. It's understandable to want to be less visible & perhaps less oppressed/marginalized in an area that deceivingly seems to be "controllable" or "changeable".
Can you PLEASE do a video on Adele's sirtfood diet? I am really curious about that and if it is healthy or not!!
It's on my list to do a video about this but in the meantime I have a blog post about it you can check out: www.abbeyskitchen.com/the-sirtfood-diet/

Abbey I would love to see video about your nutrition and meal advice for a religious fast. I am a Bahá’i and we have a fast, Ramadan for Muslims, etc. Since we can only eat before dawn and after sunset, it is important that we get all of our daily needs in those two meals.
On my list to discuss this!
"sweat, piss, crap and breathe" my new mantra
😂
We gotta put it on a shirt or water bottle haha
Very insightful Abbey thank you 🙌😊 I am becoming more and more educated on this topic and really value the need for this discussion, as it highlights the prevalent societal problem. Look forward to your next video 🥰 ❤️
Thank you! So glad it was helpful
Those foot pad things are from Japan, they were created as a gag gift item, but unfortunately people in the US found them. I think I can just end my point there.
😫
As far as I know, these thingies oxidize over night and get dark, they don’t pull out any toxins through the skin.
Yes! Love how you talk about this and critique some of the problematic factors here while still being so respectful to Lizzo.
Thank you!
I don't blame her at all. I went to my PCP a couple days ago to ask for help in determining how many calories I should be eating for weight loss. He gave me some willy nilly range and then began telling me about a detox program to clean out my liver. Said many patients also lose weight during it 🙄 if our doctors are snake oil salesman too who do we trust?
Oh no! I'm so sorry 🙁
A physician?
@@katec5105 yup! A physician indeed. I think the program is called standard process/protein or something. I don't know if it's legit but I was just taken aback by the suggestion in response to a completely unrelated question

You are not a failure at loving yourself, if you want to lose weight. Thank you, that was what I needed to hear today ❤
I would LOVE to see a reaction to any of a number of videos in the historical costuming space (I believe Abby Cox and Bernadette Banner both have related videos, but there are many!!) talking about how we've shifted from letting our clothing give us an ideal silhouette to trying to starve and over exercise our bodies into giving us an ideal silhouette.
I'll have a look at those!
Thanks for bringing Danni on, I really appreciated their insights!! 💖💙

Just commenting to thank your for your consistent kindness in your content. Thank you for your work!
I don’t quite get the comments on how Adele could lose weight without massive backlash. Personally I saw loads of articles at the time about how she ‘betrayed’ the body positivity movement and was hurting plus size women. And there were thousands of online comments about how people thought it was wrong she had lost weight. But I agree that Lizzo shouldn’t be getting negative comments either.

This analysis reminds me so much of Michelle’s video (from my thoughts will probably offend you) about how sometimes people want to tell black people how to be black but as long as it doesn’t go against their beliefs 🥸🤦🏻♀️
I'll have a look at that
