Hey everyone! Today, we’re reviewing the What I Eat in a Day (WIEIAD) from Glucose Goddess, aka Jessie Inchauspé, the content creator behind the blood sugar balance trend. 🚨 Jessie has built a massive following by promoting ways to manage glucose spikes, stabilize insulin levels, and prevent energy crashes, but are her recommendations really backed by science-based nutrition? In this video, I’ll break down her meal choices, discuss the potential risks of micromanaging blood sugar, food fears, and restrictive dieting. Let’s separate fact from fiction!

Eating a savory breakfast is a hack I discovered myself before the glucose goddess. I did it because I was so addicted to sweets. I woke up thinking pancakes, French toast, sweet bread and the like. Getting away from sweet breakfast is what helped me break the sugar habit. I finally feel I’m in control not the sugar.

My favorite savory breakfast, which I make a couple hours before I’m going to hike or go to the gym, is savory oats! I do steel cut oats with garlic, onion, bacon or ham, and spinach or kale, and top with a fried egg. It’s so good. I’ve even made it with red quinoa and that works too. What’s your fave savory breakfast?

I’ve been watching the glucose goddess. So far I haven’t heard her say cut out sugar entirely. She simple says eat what you like in a specific order and your sugar levels will improve. @@cydhvib sure it's obviously more useful to people with diabetes, with insulin resistance, etc but I think some advice can be applied for the general population, like eating a salad before a glucose heavy meal (holidays for exemple) or having sugar treats at the end of the meal as dessert and not in the middle of your morning or evening. We all know we eat way more sugar than we should and prediabetes is more and more common these days.

There have been numerous comments on the video you did on GG two years ago explaining that the hacks are nothing like "specific militant rules" as you call them here. In fact, in this same WIEIAD video from French Vogue, Jessie says "The hacks are not a diet that you can fail at. They're like little fairy godmothers that you keep in your pocket and that you use when it's easy to use them. But if at any point this is stressful, then just don't do it. Take care of yourself." For some reason you left this out of your critique. Likewise, she is not anti-carb and has said many times that there are ways to eat oatmeal and fruits for breakfast by using the "clothe your carbs" hack and adding protein and fat (the same thing as your HCCs that you are also trying to promote). She's not anti-bread, just avoids it unclothed at the start of the meal for the same reason. She never tells people they need to cut out sugar and explains how she loves her chocolate cake. In the video you cut out the follow-up in the Vogue Kitchen where she suggests swaps that I think you'd approve of which are very close to the HCC advice. I value the lens you generally provide for those of your audience members who have or are recovering from EDs. But GG's advice is aimed at anyone who wishes to control their blood sugar. They have helped me reverse my prediabetes in just a few weeks, by following some of the hacks, some of the time. I only found out that I had prediabetes a few months ago, and since trying these out I've had the most balanced stable energy of my life. My father has Type 2 diabetes and learning more ways about how we can reduce glucose spikes is really helpful. We were disappointed to learn from his glucose monitors that yes, even well-clothed oatmeal does cause a spike for him, but we both still eat it when we want to and oat milk is still my go-to. We weren't always prediabetic or diabetic and got this way mainly from how we ate which we need to learn how to change. I think in the big picture it will certainly do more good than harm for most people to learn how to make whatever small changes they like in order to eat in a way that manages their blood sugar levels, especially when most people may not even know how insulin resistant they are. The reality is that because of the way the food industry is designed with sugar in everything to get us addicted, the majority of people can benefit from this advice. So, to my mind the severe callout tone of your videos on GG is a disappointing and unwarranted misrepresentation of someone else's work.

Usually I do not leave comments, but this time I felt otherwise.. I think both - Abbey's and Glucose Goddess' - point of views should be taken with a grain of salt. Especially if both people have their own agenda to follow (including all these sponsorships Abbey is having, for instance, selling bread). Also, it is interesting you left out the part of Glucose Goddess video where she is saying: but if you really want a tasty cookie, buy it but it is better to have it as a dessert. I think if you took more time to understand her, you would learn that she is not saying one should follow all these hacks (you see them as "rules" probrably) strictly, all the time. These are hacks, not rules. She is saying herself in her videos that it is not always possible to follow these hacks and it is totally okay. No one should obsess too much about these things. She also says, it is fine to eat chocolate or other sweets, in fact, she loves chocolate herself... Also the same with enjoying a mixed meal - it is completely understandable that it is not always possible to eat veggies first, then protein, etc, just man should make sure it is not just pure carbs but as a Hunger Crushing Combo. So yeah, unfortunately, it makes me question if you really have taken the time to understand her or you just select videos of her that fit with your own agenda..

For reference, I had followed strict macro counting & other meal plans outlined by a fitness brand I followed for 15 years or so. I found your channel refreshing & took the leap to use the guidance I learned from you. While I found empowerment through this lifestyle change, I unfortunately gained 20 pounds. I went to my primary care for workup thinking there was something medical. Per chance, Glucose Goddess appeared in my feed. I applied the things I learned & the weight started to come off, I felt satiated, had less sugar cravings, less migraines, & more energy - despite continuing the same diet. I continue to use what I've learned from the both of you that I feel are complementary. What I do know, is carbs are not demonized. Carbs are not restricted. But, higher fiber/protein or fermented (sourdough) are suggested. I remember watching this video before & thinking, "Abbey isn't going to like that." But the premise, is still to eat what you want, but her example for herself was focused on the science of choosing savory (or sometimes fat/protein) items to be more satiating. Anti-spike is also not suggested for every meal. My particular takeaway wasn't that carbs are bad, but there seems to be a method to enjoy them if that is the path one so takes. And if it's a sandwich, bowl, etc the advice was to eat as is - it's not practical to take it apart.

I follow your approach: Adding and not substracting and see more and more dietitians and nutritionists (like Kylie Sakaida, she's also lovely like you) proposing the same approach and it brings me back to a light space. I can't have savoury breakfasts, I just don't like it and I "forced" myself to have it but felt never satiatied because it didn't taste good. So after the savoury breakfast I ended up eating a sweet biscuit or something just to fill that spot!!

If you'd actually researched her approach to eating you'd find that she recommends using the hacks when it is comfortable and fits your lifestyle, she even said herself that she sometimes doesn't use the hacks for several days/weeks in a row. Also, Anti-Spike is not recommended to use for every meal. She never said to cut out carbs or sugar entirely or that food is "good" or "bad", she simply approaches food in tems of it's blood sugar response in the body, which is scientifically proven. Her channel is obviously about blood glucose hence the focus on the topic.

Thank you for this. Can you clarify what the deal is on blood sugar control & why one would not want to spike if not diabetic? If we are just trying to build muscle and lose fat, should we be concerned about glucose spikes? And why? How are weight loss and these spikes related?

    • @tammymasson2343
      @tammymasson2343 18 минут назад

Repeatedly high, sustained spikes over time can lead to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance then eventually worsens and turns into type 2 diabetes.
The spikes lead to our pancreas releasing insulin, which lowers the blood sugar level. Often there is an over compensation, and the blood sugar drops quite low. This creates the urge to eat again, often driving us to seek out sweet foods for a quick response to the low blood sugar level. This becomes the blood sugar "roller coaster" where we tend to eat more frequently and consume more calories than we need.
When on the roller coaster, it is super hard to control our food choices with willpower. When blood sugar levels are more steady, cravings for sweets are not as strong, and foods with higher nutrition are more naturally appealing and satisfying. It's easier to sense actual hunger over just a desire to eat.
      Hope that is helpful.

I think a more productive way to talk about this kind of stuff would be to just cut straight to the concepts of glycemic index and glycemic load- as a pre diabetic its important for me to understand that things like whole milk will have a better impact on my blood sugar and insulin than oat milk which has a much higher glycemic index. I think referring to these things just as "starchy" and "sweet" is counterproductive because plenty of carby foods are low GI. Berries and pitted fruits and great for blood sugar control and sourdough and rye breads are great for the gut and don't spike blood sugar. It's also true that high GI foods can have adverse affects on people who are not insulin resistant. I think her overall philosophy is good and it's important for people to understand the importance of stable blood sugar (I am "healthy-looking" and "thin" and still struggle with blood sugar no matter what I do, and it's a very uniquely American and very harmful misconception that only bigger people struggle with insulin resistance and weight is a perfect indicator of health and nutrition and I think many people who appear healthy by American standards would be shocked by what's going on with their blood sugar) but she could be a lot more explicit about the concept of glycemic index and also let people know that not everything that tastes sweet or has starch will spike your blood sugar.

If I start the day with carbs, I will spend the rest of the day trying to get my low blood sugar back up to functional levels so I don’t pass out. Oats are the most triggering for a hypoglycaemic episode so I definitely can’t eat them, and strangely so are eggs unless I have them with another form of protein and fat.

What I’ve taken away from a lot of GGs content is that if you’re going to eat sugar, you should eat that you like (aka- enjoy your food)and that if you can’t do every hack every time, don’t stress. She’s chosen to take on the topic of managing blood sugar, which is helpful because of the prevalence of prediabetes and type two diabetes in our society. She’s using science to guide her dietary choices, just as you are. But because you don’t agree with every little thing she does, you use it as a grab for content and views. Be better.

Hi Abbey, Instagram is telling me I need to buy ARMA...Can we talk about it? As a labor and delivery nurse we talk a lot about how important colostrum is, and how it starts building our immune system, but why would I need that as a 35 year old?

I wonder if the increased cancer risk from alcohol is affected by moderate drinkers living longer which increases lifetime cancer risk

I stopped eating breakfast and I am not hungry as much. Most people don't need to eat three meals a day.

I hate the word “hack”. I’m so sick of hearing about new “hacks” for every part of our lives, especially eating. Half the hacks cancel out the other half and they all cause more harm than good by making people obsess about what they’re eating, possibly leading to disordered eating.

I think both channels are catering to different groups (with overlaps) and therein lies the nuance. Abbey, as an otherwise healthy person with a history of ED, looks at hard and fast rules and sees how a they could lead to disordered eating, and that's ok. It's true. But the other lady, talking to an audience that's specifically looking at ways to control their glucose, sees some "hard and fast" (in quotes because I dont think they are rules so much as incorporating "suggestions" or tips/hacks) rules as necessary, especially for an audience who needs them. It's nuanced, and both creators see it as such. Nuance, as we know, is the enemy of easy, short videos and "picking sides". So enjoy both creators and take from them what's helpful for you personally! They're both really saying the same thing; moderation, variation, and enjoyment are the keys to eating in a way you can sustain without feeling deprived.

I think that some of the tips included in the book are just unnecessary for healthy people. We should promote healthy balance as you do. I read the book and it was very interesing, however, we should take some things with a pinch of salt, so just enjoy your carbs even at the beginning of your meal.😅

@abbeyskitchen Have you looked into "non alcoholic" wines and how they compare, as a dietician? I'm so curious. apparently they have some of the health benefits but with just a very small amount of alcohol.
