    As a psychologist the whole concept of telling someone that they have to forgive the person that caused their trauma is more than problematic!

    • @antiantipoda
      @antiantipoda 4 года назад +338

      "Have to forgive" OMFFFG. As a trauma survivor, forgiving is amazing if someone owns up to what they did, accept your anger and agree to move on. It's impossible if the person that harmed you refuses to admit responsibility, or behave like a decent human being. Anger, however righteous, is harmful to the one that feels it. Sometimes it is inevitable, as anger is still better than denial. Now that I saw the clip: this is horrifying. Therapy, years of therapy, not a crash diet, please.

      @@ellauglov8891 the concept of forgiveness can be helpful IF the person is ready to do so and it is their free choice. It can create a feeling of regaining control, getting out of the victim narrative and creating space for your own personal development and leaving the incident behind without freeing the person who caused the trauma from the consequences of their action. However, the act of not forgiving and intentionally saying “I do not want to forgive” instead of I’m not able to can lead to regaining autonomy and self efficacy as well. Taking the anger and using it as a tool of knowing what you want and how you want to be treated by people and as freeing motivation can also be a way to cope with trauma and it is therapeutically speaking valid. Take your time and do not feel forced! (Sorry if my grammar is off, English is my second language)

    • @antiantipoda
      @antiantipoda 4 года назад +47

      @@ellauglov8891 I'm not a therapist, but I have experience with trauma. You can reach forgiveness - as I have in some cases - or not, as I haven't in others. Let's see if I can explain. Say someone chops your arm off. In one case the person admits they mishandled a tool and it has cost you an arm, they accept their responsibility and ask if you could ever forgive them. In another case the person turns to you and says "Oh, you got a booboo, too bad." In a third case the person flees never to be seen again. You will be angry anyway, after all, you have lost something precious. In the first case, you were validated by the person who hurt you, on the others you weren't. If you can't "forgive", or resolve that anger, it tends to get misdirected at the world and make your own life harder. It's like your base level of grumpy goes up long term and you can't appreciate the nice people, the ones that are trying to help because you mistrust everything. That's where therapy comes in, to help you understand that your anger is valid, but for you to try and lower your general distrust. That's how it has worked for me. I hope I was able to help.

    As a therapist, hearing someone be told they need to forgive their rapist in order to heal made me want to cry. That's one of the most damaging things I've ever heard anyone say to a survivor. For anyone wondering, you can absolutely process your trauma and live a meaningful and wonderful and incredible life while forever hating the guts of the person who abused you. Forgiveness is important to some people, but not a requirement for healing for all people. We're all different and if you can't see a future where forgiveness is something you can achieve, that doesn't mean you won't ever be well.

      Thank you, this is something I still struggle with. When my granddad died I opened up about what happened, then spent years apologising to his dead soul that I told. Eventually I was told that just because someone dies, it doesn't make them an angel (he was bad, death doesn't erase that). Now that my father did some messed up shite I can't forgive him, and everyone thinks I should (the "he's still your dad" comments make me see red). Good to know from a professional that I don't have to forgive to move on.

She started using the elliptical for less than an hour a few days a week and eventually worked up to using the elliptical every day. THEN she started doing more intense workouts, so it’s strange to me she had all these contestants working out like athletes their first day. I get that it’s a tv show, and they want results fast but this is unrealistic and she knows that because she didn’t start out doing the most in the gym.

Many of us who have had this type of trauma suffer from various types of eating disorders and mental issues from not only being assaulted, but the stigma and how others treat us after.

It was only a theory, but the researchers suggested that people who had been sexually abused used food as a coping mechanism and the weight gain was subconsciously used to make them feel safe because they believed they were sexually undesirable. It's heartbreaking and not talked about enough. And shows like this made by people who really just want to make money make me so angry.

      This is only anecdotal, of course, but the majority of the people on My 600lb Life have some sort of trauma: abusive parent(s), sexual trauma (childhood and adult). They explicitly say that they have used food to cope with their issues; part of treatment is going into therapy to address the cause of the eating. Many of them also come from homes where food was used to show love or is a bond among siblings.

    tw: ed
    this is just my personal experience with why you should never lose weight for someone else- growing up my mom used to always criticize and make jokes about my weight. i was tired of it so when i was 14 i decided to go on what i thought was a health journey. it looked like i was doing all the right things, i started exercising more and eating better.BUT the problem with weight loss for someone else is that the feeling becomes addictive- i got obsessed with other people being proud of me. after that, the weight loss never felt like enough because i was scared that my mom would be ashamed of me again if i did something as simple as eating a cookie. When my dad started telling me i didn’t eat enough and i needed to stop losing weight because i was making myself sick it felt like a compliment, like i was SO GOOD at weight loss that i’d achieved and far surpassed my goals. when my mom started saying that too it was just the most frustrating thing in the world because all i could think was “screw you this is what you wanted me to do” “i did this for you, because of you”
    and yeah that’s kind of it. i’m almost 18 now and i’m technically in ana recovery but i relapse so often i’m not even sure you can call it that. my best advice is that if you’re making lifestyle choices, make sure your heart is in the right place

    As a future RD, this video makes me want to cry and scream. I feel so bad for these people they're trying to "help." The one woman is straight-up confessing and apologizing for eating refried beans and rice--literally two of the most amazing, nutrient-dense foods out there!! Not only is their information unscientific, but it truly is "inhumane" as you put it. Wow.

    It infuriates me how they say "it will make your mind body and soul feel good to get a revenge body", then the producers and team treat the participants like numbers.

    The best revenge is living a happy life and not thinking about revenge anymore.
    I feel bad for all the Kardashians. They grew up in this toxic bubble and all the money can't buy happiness and self love.

    💥💥💥IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE , TURN IT UP 💥💥💥
    Btw I love how neither khloe nor her super duper Hollywood doctors seem to think about the fact that people lose weight at a different speed and in different ways

    Can we also just talk about how it's absolutely possible to move forward and heal and thrive WITHOUT forgiving your abuser? You do not have to forgive, you do not have to forget. And you can still heal. This 'forgive and forget' idea was built for people with an obsession with getting even with those who've wronged them in superficial ways that don't actually affect their life, not for those who were harmed in such a cruel way that creates deep psychological trauma that affects their day-to-day life. It's insensitive and counterproductive.

    Thanks for reviewing this show! That clip of Chloe talking to the lady saying she was going to drop her, wow just wow 😳 that hurt me hearing her say that. Smh

    As a fellow woman who has been assaulted: you do not ever have to forgive the person that violated you and your human right to keep your body as a safe space that is only for you to decide how to be touched and held. Ever. I have forgiven the person that assaulted me in many many ways but that is something I will never forgive him.

    I was on this show 💁🏻‍♀️ I am not in any of the clips here but Harley was my trainer. you’re not wrong about much of what you’ve said here, but ALOT of the editing that goes into this show manipulates what actually happened to look a certain way. Just remember it’s reality tv 🙃 if you want to know more about the experience in depth and then critique it I’m happy to answer questions!

    I absolutely loathe the concept of a revenge body. The concept is wrong on so many levels.

    Abbey, I love your videos. You are so good at phrasing what I am thinking - I am just in front of my screen, nodding, being like "yes", "yep", "exactly". I really enjoy how you back up your opinions with scientific proof. In addition, I am learning new things. Thanks so much for this content!

    You should review an episode of “eat yourself sexy”! It’s dramatized of course but it focuses more on eating whole foods and such and I’d be interested in seeing you review it 🧐

    As an exercise scientist and menstrual cycle educator I am legit worried about how this type of exercise (and nutrition) is impacting these women’s hormones. This type of diet and exercise can lead to a loss of period really quick which presents a host of problems.

    Thankyou for shedding light on this! I honestly can't believe the show was allowed on air, if I was to see this show in my most vulnerable mindset it would have been so damaging. This is the type of show I would hope my younger sister, family and friends are never exposed to because the messages are so toxic. Love your channel and thankyou for providing such great information xx

    Can I just say thank you so so much for this video- and all of them actually! It makes me want to cry.
    As someone who really struggles with a healthy relationship with food because of past diets, and has really benefited from your commentary, I really really appreciate It! I have been yo-yoing in weight for so long, so the fact that you educate us on how some foods fill an emotional need, and that’s okay, has changed me. Because I don’t restrict, I now understand more about what my body craves more than ever, and I’m definitely heading in a good direction. I never thought I’d get to a point where I looked at a container of ice cream, and passed on It because I really didn’t feel like any. And I never thought I could ever eat a piece of candy again, without extreme guilt and disgust. So thank you so much for your content. Even though these shows promote so much bad, watching you explain things actually helps makes your points more clear to me.
    Love ya!!! 💕
