    I was an extreme anorexic when this show was on and it actually saved my life. It played a very important role in helping me explain to others what I was going through and made me feel seen. From a recovered anorexic's point of view, this show was crucial to my recovery and it helped me bridge conversations that I didn't have the vocabulary for before this show existed.

    Idk if Abbey watched more than the first 2 seasons because Dr Jensen in the later seasons worked super hard to show both ends what they deal with is a mental illness, and used them to talk to each other to get to the root of their traumas.
    Also, they had a Dr who had 2 or 3 seasons to work with anorexic and bulimic individuals to teach watchers the dangers of undereating and disordered eating
    Dr Jensen also consistently showed the underweight people issues they're putting their bodies through with pictures from other patients and at times real body samples and tissues

The "superskinny" participants are absolutely not idealized, and the diet plans in the "ominous red folders" are elucidated in later seasons. Also, there are countless educational portions discussing the dangers of disordered eating - both over AND under. I think while a lot of your criticism is definitely valid, I think when it comes to the language used we shouldn't forget that this started airing 12 years ago and also that this is a British TV show. From my experience, British people are often a lot more straightforward and what we might perceive as insensitive in the way they phrase things. As the intended audience and the participants grew up in that culture, they likely had less issues with it that let's say an American audience might have.

      Im Welsh, we can be shy but loud and aren't shy about being offensive. Its a bit like the idea British people say sorry all the time, we arent sorry, we're just sorry we had to say sorry.

    In early seasons, this show did show the “supper skinny” how them being underweight could negatively affect their health. There were also many segments on EDs. I feel like Abbey just watched a few episodes and is overly critiquing for shock value. The show wasn’t one that encouraged mass weight changes immediately. They were given healthy plans to get on the path they wanted. I don’t think the show necessarily shamed the people. It was more of an eye opener of how serious their habits could get.

It just shows people being rehabilitated into eating normally, but like, how could this help a viewer exactly? Anyway the show is ancient I doubt it would ever pass ethics approval now! I now look back on that and realise I wasn’t big and has contributed to my disordered eating and unhealthy relationship with food. My mum ended up getting weight loss surgery and says I eat too much because I eat more then her and that’s what I need to do to lose weight. I eat between 1500-1800 Cals a day and my diet is very balanced (my weight is health related not because I eat too much) . She as a result of her surgery needs iron injections and refuses to eat a balanced diet. She thinks a pack of 2 minute noodles is enough for lunch and I begged her to have some veggies or tuna with it and she’s like I can’t eat both. It had a special capsule on anorexia (and other restrictive disorders) throughout the seasons and it also talked a lot about binging disorders. I also liked the fact that the skinny person was rarely called anorexic, which is not common. After the few days where meals were swapped between the super skinny and the super size, each had a 3 month plan to follow. Also, the show was always hinting at mental disorders without diagnosing anyone (which is very difficult to do). For example, a trigger such as failure in university or a death was often associated to picking bad food habits. Anyway, I personally liked the show and I kinda disagree with Abbey’s opinion (very rare).

    To be honest as someone who was obese basically their entire life I liked this show because it showed me how outrageous my binges would be in the eyes of others (even if the portions weren't as huge as the obese guest's). It really helped me address my emotional eating by seeing the disgusted reactions from the gaunt guests as they were presented with a smorgasbord that I thought looked delicious... Really was a slap of reality I needed. It was also reaffirming to see the realizations from the obese guest after the first two days or so of "force feeding" the gaunt guest, the realization that the massive amounts of food wasn't delicious but was actually disgusting, it made me look at myself and self correct my own portions.
    I can see why people would think this show was outrageous, and it was at times, but at the end of the clinic when the super skinny was actually rebuilding an appetite and the super sized just felt bad for having gorged themselves for so long... Those realizations sometimes only happen through outrageous situations.

    Hmm. I have lots of thoughts on this:
    “The sole goal of the show is to manipulate weight, or BMI. Not improve health”. Ummm no it isn’t. On the show two people with eating disorders are shocked and taught how they’re hurting themselves eating/staving the way they do. At the end, they always realize that they need to change. And they get a healthy eating plan before they leave. The “superskinny” has the goal to steadily gain weight, and the “supersize” to lose weight. This video seems disingenuous. I’ve been watching this show on and off since I was in high school, not little clips. When someone who eats 5000 calories a day and weighs like 600 lbs loses weight, that’s a good thing. When someone who eats a minuscule 500-1200 calories a day (literally. Ive seen episodes where the superskinny one eats maybe a couple hundred calories a day and only chugs tea and coffee to keep them going) and is significantly underweight begins to *gain* weight, that’s a good thing.
    “Seeing improvements in your blood pressure or your a1c doesn’t drive ratings like dropping those dramatic lbs” you mean like a stone or two? When someone is very morbidly obese, dropping like a stone in 3 months is not some crazy radical change.
    About how they fly the “supersize” person to meet someone worse off then them in the US....yeah. The person they meet doesn’t want them to end up in the same situation. With a plethora of horrible health issues, lost limbs from the diabetes, etc. It is a “terrifying glimpse into their future”. I’ve seen it firsthand. It’s fucking terrible dealing with the things the people they fly out to meet have to deal with. People don’t think they’ll ever get to that point...until they wake up and they already ARE. Same with any addiction.
    “The premise of the show puts the supersize against the super skinny” no it doesn’t....the idea is to get them to help each other learn that they both need to change their eating habits to live a better and healthier life. And the “superskinny” people *are* “subjected to the same body shaming fear factor experience”. They’re shown what terrible things that can happen to their body if they continue to stave themselves. And they can’t fly them out to meet someone worse off then them because people worse off then them are already dead. Dead from losing the fight against their anorexia. “Even though arguably, their health is in equal and in some cases even greater danger” yes. Of course it is. It’s not arguable. Neither of them are healthy. Again, that’s the point of the show....
    “They show erroneously suggests disorder eating is only an issue in the superskinny individual” mmm no it doesn’t.
    “Force feeding a chronic under eater HUGE portions of food for a few days in order to immediately stimulate and appreciation of eating is ill informed and dangerous”. They’re not force fed shit. Most don’t even eat a fraction of the food on the plate. Which again, is the point of the show. They all sign up for the show, they know what’s going to happen when they get to the house. You’re so close to the point.
    And about the reddit part: its one of *those* kinds of threads. Like the pro Ana tumblr tag. If you go to an eating disorder forum like that, you’re gonna find posts talking about or promoting eating disorders. Shocker.
    “The show does not prompt realistic behavioral changes” yes, that’s why both people on the show get, again, healthy eating plans to help them moving forward.
    “They’re told to eat a diet so extremely different than what their body and palate is accustomed to, there is no way in hell anyone could reasonably expect it to be sustained” yeah no shit. It’s not meant to be their new long term diet. It’s just for a couple of days so they can gain perspective on what they’re doing to themselves. That’s the point of the show.
    And again, the “superskinny” RARELY actually eats the “supersize” portion. Some only take a couple bites, most eat, again, a fraction of the food, and very few get their appetite back fairly quickly and actually get hungry and finish the meal.
    And childhood obesity is bad. It’s all on their parents. If a 10 year old kid is eating deep fried foods and ice cream all day every day and not exercising....that’s bad. And it’s the parents’ fault. I don’t understand how someone could argue the opposite. Coming from someone who was very overweight as a child...It was my family who taught and encouraged my bad eating habits from a very young age.

      “On the show two people with eating disorders are shocked and taught how they’re hurting themselves eating/starving the way they do. At the end they always realize that they need to change, and they get a healthy eating plan before they leave.” You are very naive or just uneducated. First, do you not think that they don’t know what they do is wrong? As Abby said, a lot of people with eating disorders are on healthcare careers (someone at the facility I work is a neurosurgery resident in the last year of residency, so almost a neurosurgeon. Some of the other clients are nursing students). They don’t just realize, “oh wow, I have been hurting myself, I’m going to change now” because of the show. That’s not how it works, if it were that easy nobody would be struggling. Doesn’t matter what plan they get, they very likely follow it for the amount the show lasts, and then go back to their old eating behaviors, especially the superskinny people. Recovering from an eating disorder is extremely hard. So much so that the success rate are low. Depending on the ED, the success rate can be less than 50%. So half the people or more don’t recover. For those who do recover it can take years, even decades for them to be able to say they recovered. I would like to see all those people now, to see how successful they were at recovery and how much it was due to the program. But I have a pretty good idea. I’ve only been working at an ED treatment facility for a very short time, and I’ve seen a lot of people leave when they are not ready. Some have tried multiple programs all around the country, and are still trying to recover. I work for a very prestigious company in the ED treatment community, so they know what they are doing. Is is also not the work of one doctor. There is a huge team of professionals helping these people. From RDs, to doctors, to psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, behavioral health technicians, etc. and treatment is still not effective for some. Point is, it is not as simple as the show makes it seem, and their “treatment” was probably NOT effective for most of the people that went through it.

Dr Christian always highlights the health risks of the people's diets, and in the later series they do tune into past traumas linked to their bad habits. Yes it's shocking to see each participants terrible diet, but that was their actual diet, and I find it strange how you think the show shouldn't have disclosed the truth of what they've been eating. The participants certainly expressed how it had helped them at the end of each episode. At the end of the day it's an (older) entertainment tv show, not a documentary so of course it's going to have the shock elements and extra side 'bits' about the nation's bums etc. Definitely didn't trigger or offend me, I found it gave a good perspective

  • @cancel2394
    @cancel2394 3 года назад +33

    Here is how I watch the show:
    2 people with eating disorders check in and swap meals, which shows the "superskinny" that they could be taking a lot better care of themselves, opens up the door as to why they have no appetite (smoking, caffine addiction, ect), and revitalizes their love for food by eating such rich meals (or reminding them even though they don't like the "supersized" meal types, that they can eat a lot more of what they Do like )
    The "supersize" look across the table as well at the underweight person and the food that weighs the same as the person in some cases, and usually takes up to want to feed them, wants them to take better care when faced with such small meals like. Oatmeal. Canned corn. Or just. Water. So now the "supersize" sees they are eating too much and putting themselves at risk, and want to help the other person be better, its a very give and take show when I watch, granted, I skip all the medical scare tactics (im hypochondriac enough) but the other thing they don't show is the meal plan the doctor gives them at the end to suggest better ways to eat, and I love that they don't come back with Impossible changes like TBL forces, its 1 or 2 stones difference for the "superskinny" and "supersize" alike, and sometimes you cant even 'see' the weight change, so its more about the health than appearance as well

  • @sollyfan
    @sollyfan 3 года назад +103

    It actually made both parties realize how they treated themselves, the “super size” could see how someone else ate their food and really struggled with it, the “super skinny” saw how they underfed themselves when someone ate what they ate in a day, a lot of eyes were opened and almost all of them made a recovery and live a healthy life with a healthy diet

      I agree! This show has not only educated me a lot with how being obese/overweight is affecting my body, but has also inspired me to workout more and change my eating habit. It definitely doesn’t seem like she’s watched many episodes considering she didn’t touch about how he goes over the health impacts both over eating and under eating can have on the body. I watched quite a lot of UK based health shows and UK shows in general and they're very straightforward with how they approach harder topics. Seems like she needs to do more research.

And yet all she does is continue to promote restrictive eating to her young impressionable audience as the only solution to aesthetic issues such as weight and acne. She's stuck in a cycle and yet continues to think fully cutting out a food group is the solution.

    I low key enjoyed the food portion tubes at the beginning of the show, it really gave the participant a visual shock as to how much/how little they were eating (although it was very wasteful) and it was clear to me as a casual viewer that *both* participants were suffering in their own way; everyone should have been offered more support and counseling ---maybe they were but it wasn't on camera. Dr. Christian always seemed like a very caring doctor towards both participants. The outrage here is a bit much, this program was first and foremost for entertainment---the adults who signed the contract with the BBC were aware of what they were doing they knew that the experiment was temporary.

    I understand the concern about refeeding syndrome, but the "super-skinny" person is not actually made to eat the "super-sized" person's meals. The meals are put in front of them and they try to eat what they can, which often is just a normal meal's worth of food (which is more than they normally eat). Also, the "super-skinny" people are not the extremely low-weight anorexics who are at risk for refeeding syndrome in the first place. People at risk were probably excluded as candidates to appear on the show.

      @@zoecoates4677 The point of them switching foods is to watch others eating their portion sizes and to help them see how much more/ little they can eat than they already do. It kick starts the supersized individuals to see they don't need as much food as they are eating and helps decrease their appetite a bit before they go onto their diet. It kick starts the superskinny individuals to see they can eat more food than they have been eating and helps improve their appetites before they move on to their diet The doctor constantly expresses how both sides are bad and even sends the people home with healthy diet plans. Many of the people on the show sustain the diets and become happier after leaving it. I agree with a few things that you said, but disagree with most. I've seen a few episodes, and frankly, there's nothing wrong with the "scared straight" format of the show. It tells ppl the actual truth about what can happen to them if they continue to eat poorly (whether it's undereating, or overeating...and they do in fact discuss the health ramifications of undereating).
    The cold hard truth is that whether or not a metabolic state is improved, maintaining an obese BMI is never healthy. It absolutely comes down to weight loss. It's doing ppl a disservice to claim otherwise.

      I hear what you are saying but saying that "there's nothing wrong with the scared straight format" is extremely problematic and just because it seems fine on the show does not make it fine for those people IRL. I know from experience how extremely traumatic it can be to be told 'the truth', when most of the time 'the truth' is actually utter shit, because it's rooted in fatphobia. There are much better ways to approach people, especially without fatphobic language. Weight can be a side effect of deeper issues (which they do explore to some extent on the show), but now that I've just started ED recovery I know that it's not about weight, eating habits and your relationship with food are deeply rooted and fatphobia is not going to fix trauma or our obsession with weight. On this, "it comes down to weight loss" is also again problematic. The show makes it seem as though weight loss/weight gain exists in a vacuum, when actually it is about finding the healthiest and unique body for each unique person, a body that allows them to live freely (without actively controlling weight ). Absolutely no mention about how these people could improve health with behaviors whilst weight just does its own thing.

    • @DianaBecker1
      @DianaBecker1 3 года назад +1

      @@celestenorthfinocchi I'm focusing on the physical aspect of weight, whereas you're focusing on the psychological one. If someone can get to a point where they're no longer obsessed with food and able to live their day to day life happily at a weight that falls into the obese range, it still doesn't change the fact that there are huge health ramifications that go along with carrying that extra weight. That's what I meant when I pointed out that it does, in fact, come down to weight loss when we're talking about physical health consequences. I don't see anything problematic with that. 🤷‍♀️

      American culture can seem quite oversensitive about superficial things when compared to European culture. Maybe we are a little less sensitive to hurting anyones feelings and more focused on facts. The biggest loser show (super-duper over the top and ONLY focused on the results at the scale) was waaaay worse than this, when it comes to destroying the participants health.
      1. The participants always have a health check before they are allowed to swap diets,
      2. The Dr. in this show is an actual doctor and the show is totally in line with the facts known about nutrition at the time,
      3. They only swap diets for 4-5 days. They are not overly focused on the results on the scale in the end, but are actually focused on the lifestyle change and the underlying psychological reasons for eating too much or too little.
      Some later shows focuses on follow-up to see if the lifestyle change had worked. Maybe it is just not sitting well that the show uses the US as a very bad example? It must hurt a little to see ones country being presented as the fat peoples hell like that. It is quite extreme, but then again, it is an extreme problem they are trying to solve.
      US lost the battle to obesity, sad but true. Food production is not regulated according to health risks and food corporations and the privatized healthcare industry are allowed to ride on the backs and earn a great living of the poor souls that get addicted to crap food.
      In Europe many countries have free healthcare and I think this is why it is accepted to talk openly about health risks when continuing with an unhealthy lifestyle, it is a sort of collective, societal problem, not a perfect system, but very different from an individualized culture with more focus on personal choices and freedom.

      @@AbbeysKitchen kinda feels like you half watched one episode of season one and missed the entire point of the show. It wasn't about fat shaming it was about waking people (willing participants) up to unhealthy eating habits that were making them unhappy, and educating them on healthy ones, under OR overweight. It had more science and evidence than any other show of it's time, and spoke about specific vitamin deficiency impacts and how to include more in the diet. It also gave air time to a wide range of human bodies and normalised diversity in a pretty respectful way - either end of the spectrum, especially in later seasons where there was a segment (not Jillian lol) about eating disorders and pulling apart diet fads. While definitely problematic by today's standards, this show was (and arguably still is) far more balanced than most, and included disclaimers and helpline info etc before and afterwards. As someone who suffered from an ED this show helped me so much by readjusting my perspective and focusing on health not a number on a scale (it wasn't a final weigh in it was a 3 month check in, and it was always about how they had changed their habits and were just at the beginning of their journey). It seemed like you were looking for reasons to hate on this show and kinda missed all the positives about it? Usually I am so on board with all your vids but this one seemed over the top and excessively negative and made me feel bad for being able to enjoy this show despite its (admittedly many) flaws. hoping to see some more balanced, uplifting & positive content in future (while still calling out diet culture bs of course!!!) Just my 2 cents :)

    Ummmm, why is everyone in the comments like "this show is not problematic at all"... I remember watching it as a fat child and it wasn't okay at all. I remember the segment where they'd put some snacks at a public place with a hidden camera, then shame total strangers for how much they ate, there was also that Gillian "Ban big bums" segment where she approached random women at the mall, measured their bums and got them enrolled in her extreme weightloss program while shaming them, then there was a segment with Anna, a normal sized woman who literally nobody would call fat, trying all the fad diets while talking negatively about her body... EVERY comment section of an episode of Supersize superskinny is FULL of people with anorexia coming to trigger themselves so much so that it's a running joke. Do I need to continue?

      @@PlaceboEllie True. But at some point we have to let go and accept an adult's consent at face value and not preemptively call "abuse/coercion" at every opportunity. If we are using your "gray" view of "consent = coercion when money is involved," we will have to assume that egg donors are being coerced, and that participants in clinical trials for new drugs are being coerced, as both groups receive money in exchange for their consent and participation. These participants are adults, and we need to give them the respect of accepting their consent. They consented to participate in something that you find distasteful, and that is their choice.

To me as someone who never struggled with weight and EDs, it really opened my eyes to how other people may feel around food and I think it made me feel LESS judgemental as it was obvious that they are not "just lazy" or whatever, that there are many issues behind these extreme eating patterns. Absolutely agree that contrasting extreme had the purpose of showing that you should strive to be in the middle rather than either extremely restricting or binging. The bum thing is cringe for sure but I think that was simply the British non-PC humour of the time.

    The show does not say that losing weight is the biggest sign of success like Abbey mentioned. It is about developing proper eating habits and adding variety into the diet. That being said, while losing/gaining weight isn't the main part of the show, it is a big chunk of it. But you have to realize that these people (especially the super skinnies) are largely at risk. It is often the case that if the super skinny lost any more weight they would have organ failure. If the super sizer gained any more weight they are more likely to develop one of the several risk factors associated with obesity. Another thing I will say is that these people signed up for the show!! They knew what it would be like and always reported that it was a wake up call for them. Also, why are scare tactics not acceptable? They're certainly accepted when it comes to smoking. I do agree that the show should've shown what types of meals they start eating in order to change their health.
