what a beautiful spot in Greece. That place looks really cool. All disciplines of windsurfing have an element of fun to them. Formula gets you on the water in a really light breeze and I always enjoyed the sensation of planing in marginal conditions. Feeling the sail, board and fin and just trying to keep it all in harmony achieving speeds way in excess of the actual wind speed.
that's well said!
That formula board and an 11 or 12 meter sail is what i ride all summer every summer.
I just discover your channel, I love it! Continue and I hope share a windsurf session with you !
see you on the water!
As my daugt taught me windsurfing and will probably never do it again it is always nice to see some father & son action! hope I can learn it to my kids as well. thx for the video!
I taught my 2 sons windsurfing. I can tell you blasting/foiling close one next to each other is one of the most rewarding things out there. Magical.
@@markopanger412 will do that with my kids hopefully :)
it's so nice to be able to share sessions together with my dad and also sister sometimes, it's the best!
It's always good have a FW board in your quiver. There are so many days with good forecast and then it is not enough for slalom. Take out the big board, put 9.6 on it and have fun! And anPatrik AI Formula also doesn't feel too heavy ;)
yes, some of the most fun sessions just flying over relatively flat water :)
Very true!!
Nice to see you touching on this. I recently got into windsurfing 4 years ago and many people I sail with use formula boards and 10.0 sails. I too have a 10.0 sail that I pair on my falcon light wind board. I have little experience sailing smaller boards, but the thrill I get on my setup is far greater than the feeling in a foil. I personally don’t love the feeling when foiling compared to the fin.
Love your idea for vlog! Hope to see you in one of Attica's spots one day!
it's quite a long way from Plataria, but the plan is to make it all the way round greece, but i am taking my time, also need to wait for windy days a lot up north...
I love formula ❤
it's still great fun!
past wekend was held in Murcia the formula windsurf spanish cup, 9 entries and with the rigth conditions was a ton of fun , thight races and smiles in everyone faces, when compared to foil racing , is a bit slower and it needs more specific wind conditios , yet now a days its an afordable material but the fleet is dying
yes, noone new is doing formula
Looking forward to the Mistral Equipe long distance filming. My Equipe is going to be jealous!
coming up :)
Bring on the Mistral Equipe adventure!
That looks great. The weather must have been a welcome for the autumn weather of Germany. What type of board is your Dad sailing? It looks very wide. Lots of Fun!
starboard formula 100, yes the weather is still great here!
Can you suggest some good flat water for Formula Windsurfing in Greece.
Nice vídeo
AWESOME 🌊🏄♂️🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🇬🇷
I have been to that sweet spot as I am local to the quite close windsurfing spot of Koronisia (Amvrakikos Gulf). There is a prediction for 20+ knots SE wind and I plan to go at Ligia Lefkas on Saturday, meet you there?
just read your comment, i was out yesterday in Plataria, was okay but couldn't really find a good spot for this wind direction...
Sieht gut aus! Auf Mistral zu fahren ist eine gute Idee!
zum foilen reicht der wind hier leider oft nicht, aber mit raceboard geht immer was :)
would the formula gear work better for this long trip? just curious how would it handle the chop.
i own a formula gear but never had the chance to use it in chop, I wonder if it would be good for a long windsurf trip.
would work good, on chop it's quite tiring on the legs, but would be way faster, just the problem that the wind isn't consistent enough to be consistently on the plane...
i got a vintage 11.5 Spitfire and its a absolute monster.. i sold both my Formula boards and a big regret
get one again, they're cheap now as well as good fins for it
@@WindsurfingNils I will that's for sure.. I got a Isonic 150 that has similar traits, but the Formula is unique
I think formula is in decline because all tried those wonderful boards with hard to rig ammed sails and with the huge leverage of 70 cm fins. But I have always used y F158 with a camless 9,5 and then 10 sail and a smaller seaweed fin and it is a fantastic feeling!
I'm also doing some windsurf foiling, nice and helpful when wind is poor, but it lacks the feeling... Of the water! Wind and water are the reasons I windsurf since almost 30 years, flying silently over is not the same!
Welcome to greece
Ευχαριστώ!
now try the formula on the foil please😝😝
i think the boom would be a bit long ;)
I had to stop the video at the beginning. I could have sworn that was Vassilki bay. But when I zoomed in I realised it wasn’t.
But it's what you see before you cross onto the island. Always fancied sailing there when on the coach back to the airport.
Me too!
i think Vassiliki only works in summer with the thermal effect, not sure though...
Yes, everything shuts down end of September. Opens end of May. July and August the months.
I know you didn’t like it when you went a couple of years ago. Maybe you caught a bad week. We love it and go every year.
Formula is so boring, sorry. Thanks for mentioning it though.
foilling is more exciting ??
On the contrary, and I do both, a lot, but find foiling boring because you don't feel a thing.
still love it, wouldn't carry around the formula gear in my car all the time so foil definetely has the edge there!
I prefermy Gaastra Vapour 3 Formula Board to Foiling,, still a great discaplin.
i think i had the 2 back in the day, a fantastic board for sure!
This is cool, I still very regularly sail my Formula gear with a 12.5m! I love the feeling of massive power in the big rig
love it!
Are you limited to very light winds, due to the amount of power that such a large sail would create in stronger winds?
@@richardm9688 Yes, with a rig that big, as it gets overpowered quite quickly, I use a 10.7 and a 9.3 for when it windier and I want to use my formula board
@@richardm9688 I use a 10 m2 and a 8,6 m2 with my JP Formula 100, both with a 70 cm Drake fin. That means that your are not limited to very light winds. When the wind increases I jump to a iSonic 77, which I use with 7,8 m2, 7,1 m2(in 20 knots conditions) and 6,0 m2(in 28-32 knots conditions). I have to admit that I prefer sailing on the iSonic 77, but the JP Formula 100 is also a very nice option. My weight is 68 kg.
I would prefer the trip with formula :D
I also brought formula gear last year for cheap light wind experience, since foil setup is damn expensive
SUPER happy with it.
Sailing in 7 knots with partik board and 9.6 gsr. I think I got quite a good pump technique xp (85kg surfer and 70cm Hurricane)
It was magnifesent surfing in the afternoon sun down in croatia even after the foilers got from the water 10m² sails)
I'd prefer that as well, but sadly there just isn't enough wind here for that... takes some getting used to and a lot of power to properly pump the 11 and 12m sails, but then they plane even earlier
Nice video!! Formula is a really nice discipline and it is sad to be forgotten due to cost and marketing reasons. The spot you have visited looks sick! Greece is a global windsurfing paradise due to its geomorphology. There are many more to explore, looking forward for your journey!
will explore as much as possible!
Sounds like a really cool project and looking forward to it. So are you doing it with the Mistral Equipe or some other raceboard? Longboards are so much fun, love my Windsurfer LT. Yesterday on a lightwind session I was just cruising around, jibing, tacking and having fun, while others on short boards were barely planing.
Yes, on a Mistral equipe, already did the first two legs of the trips, just editing it now, i need to lear how to properly ride a raceboard though ;)
@@WindsurfingNilsI can teach you….
I was quite good 35 years ago 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓. But now it’s a 11m flybridge cruiser.
I still hanker after my old windsurfing life in the 80’s
Keep up the great work 👍🏻👍🏻
Very interesting about sunscreen effect on the foil. I wonder what would happen with an application of McLube SailKote to the entire foil?
I still do formula!! don't let the formula die!! :D foil is what foil is because of formula!!
Amen brother!
i think it is already dead unfortunately, noone who didn't use a formula board in the past is going to buy one now :(
It looks absolutly beautiful! (Espcially since we hit 0° in Germany right now) Enjoy a nice journey!
that's why i escaped in time haha
What - you did not visit your mum in 2 years?!
no, they were in germany a couple of times, just didn't have time to visit when they were in greece ;)
Formula next to a foil, 2 of my biggest loves! Nice vid, curious about all the shots in Greece!
don't try on my foil, although could be interesting concept for a video haha
Great to see the formula board.
I ride JP SLW, kinda like formula?
yes, similar, maybe planes 1-2 knots later
GoogleMaps clearly stated that your destination was "Kite Club Greece"... :D awesome landscape and fantastic video, looking forward to more of your Greece vlog :)
P.S. Congrats to plus 6k subscribers :) :)
Yes exactly, were only kiters and one winger other than us at the spot, thank you :)
In my humble opinion, formula windsurfing is an anatomic nightmare, the torsion forces caused by the huge sail on the back, are to much. 40 50 years old sailors that used to race, tend to have get togethers in back surgery rooms :P. Foil reduces the drag, thus reduces the needed sail size, and it is much more maneuverable that big formula boards, thus much more fun. A no brainer to me
that is very true, also had back issues in the past, foil is much lighter on the back!
