I am very glad you reacted to this movie. I saw this in theatres as a kid. We were all sadden when #5 was blown up only to be happy he was still alive. You will enjoy short circuit 2. When he said Johnny 5 we had an idea there would be another one but not sure when. Hob knobing was a term used to mingle or have a conversation with people. The movie #5 was dancing to was Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta the top disco movie of the 70's directed by John Badham who directed Short Circuit. Also John was the cameraman when the news reporters were interviewing Stephanie. It was said it took 20 guys in telemetry suits off screen to move #5 around like his arms and fingers mostly. Don't squeeze the Charmin was the line spoken by Mr Whipple for Charmin toliet paper back in the 80's in that commercial. He reprogrammed the other robots to act like the Three Stooges
"wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too?" was the old slogan from Dr. Pepper soda.

I randomly ran across this video, and I loved it. I haven't had this much fun watching a review in ages! I am glad you enjoyed this film, it was the first movie I remember making me cry as a kid.

Fun Fact: The sound of Johnny 5's (Tim Blaney) laser firing is the same effect as the Ghostbusters' Proton Packs powering up.
Location Location Fact: Filmed in the town of Astoria, OR, where also The Goonies (1985) and Kindergarten Cop (1990) were filmed. Stephanie's (Ally Sheedy) house still exists and is located in Astoria, OR. In November of 2019 it sold for $340,000.
Casting Notes Fact: In this film and Short Circuit 2 (1988), Johnny 5's voice was provided by puppeteer Tim Blaney. This casting decision was made due to the director's belief that real-time interaction with the robot prop would make the interaction seem more natural on-screen than if they edited his voice in during post-production.
Movie Magic Fact: Many of the little tricks done by Johnny 5 (Tim Blaney) on-screen (like flipping through book pages in a blink of the eye and tossing a washer into the air in a mimic of a scene from an old gangster movie he saw) were done using relatively simple, yet ingenious slight-of-hand prop effects. For instance, the pages were flipped using an air hose, while the washer was flipped using a piece of string at both ends sideways. Not only did this save money for the producers for the actual robot and the screenplay, but they proved to be remarkably effective in getting just the right look needed for the scenes.

everyone is so surpised that Numnber 5 has a parachute, but they explain in the beginning of the movie they planned on using the robots as paratroopers.
Really glad you decided to react to this movie. I probably hadn't seen this movie in over 30 years. So it prompted me to go find the movie and watch it as well before watching this. Reminded me of how much I loved Johnny 5 back in the day. Really fun movie. And the robot work in this is really impressive. If they made this today the robot would be mostly CGI and probably wouldn't look half as good. Anyways, really fun reaction. Glad you enjoyed it :)

Part of WALL*E's design was inspired by Johnny 5. Once you see it, you always see it....
I was a kid living in a small town in the US when this came out and saw this in theaters and I loved Number 5. If they had made a cuddly stuffed animal of him (like they did for E.T. and Gizmo from Gremlins), I would have been begging my parents to get it for me, but nobody in the toy business cashed in and made such a thing. Regarding some of your questions, most of the US used big blue mailboxes, but some small towns would be slow to standardize or liked being quirky (maybe they had a town official in charge of purchases who loved all things British, for example) and might not have the typical mailboxes and phone booths (but that got more unusual as time passed and the US lost more regional identity and standardized more). Then again, someone on the movie may have needed to add props for the production design and either couldn’t get the standard US props or just wanted to use British versions for fun. 🤷♀️ The movie with Travolta is Saturday Night Fever and the program with the three guys slapping each other and making noises was The Three Stooges. Hobnobbing just means having light chitchat and hanging out with others at a party (AKA socializing). Also, “Wouldn’t you like to be a Pepper too?” was an old ad campaign for the soda Dr. Pepper (it was everywhere in the early ‘80s, from commercials to magazine ads, to billboards).

The slap stick comedy is the 3 Stooges; Larry, Moe, and Curly. U could react to that they are hilarious. The robot ur probably thinking of was R2D2 from Star Wars. The don't squeeze the Charmin was a commercial from the 80s, it was a toilet paper commercial

I bet you 100% Johnny 5 in a alternate universe would most likely give up being a robot to become a human being just to be with her. But sometimes we never get a choice on who we are. Sense Johnny 5 is gonna be a robot for life, He cannot experience other certain things organically but then again, It might not be a bad thing either.

Come on if you thought there was anything lewd with the robot dancing with Stephanie then I fear for any man offering to dance with you lol. Hardly anyone reacts to this movie so your reactions were funny. The test of consciousness joke was implying the rabbi was unwilling to give money so he said god could have what he wants if the money is thrown up, knowing it would all fall back down, where as the other two would donate whatever fell inside or outside a circle.
