    Anyone who told you Big Trouble in Little China is "bad" is out of their mind, even if they qualify it as "so bad it's good." Nope. It's just good. Great, in fact.

    Jack doesn't need the girl. She spent the whole movie making fun of him. Jack denied the girl, got the money he was after and continued his chosen life of traveling the open road.
    He is living his best life.
    Best ending.

    This doesn't really fall under the "so bad it's good" umbrella. It's definitely wacky and certainly cheesy, but it's not accidental. The "bat shit" tone of the film is entirely intentional. "So bad it's good" better describes films that were intended to be serious, but were so so poorly rendered that they ended up being unintentionally hilarious.

      There's this strange zone where some bad movies will embrace their suckiness (in whole or in part), but I don't think that applies here either, because they're still built on lameness, while Big Trouble doesn't have that failing to overcome/exploit. It just has fun with over-the-top weirdness and cheese.

    John Carpenter was inspired to make this after seeing a Chinese fantasy adventure movie called "Zu: Warriors from The Magic Mountain" (1983) directed by Tsui Hark. Known as "The Steven Spielberg of Hong Kong" for his crowd-pleasing, often FX-driven blockbuster movies, Tsui Hark in turn was inspired by the first "Star Wars." He actually hired some of the Star Wars FX team to make "Zu:WFTMM." "Zu" is a similarly bizzare, cinematic experience, akin to a fever dream or acid trip, much like this movie.
    The script for "Big Trouble" was originally a Western. Jack was a cowboy who loses his horse instead of his truck. The idea was inspired by events from actual history, the "Tong Wars": During the 1860's rival gangs of Chinese criminal factions did indeed fight in the streets of San Francisco Chinatown for supremacy and dominance over smuggling, prostitution, gambling, and various other criminal enterprises. The HBO series "Warrior" is set during these events. Writer Gary Goldman was inspired by other Chinese fantasy movies similar to Zu Warriors. A common trope are conflicts between centuries old secret societies with supernatural martial arts abilities. Many Chinese criminal orginazations are some of those centuries-old secret societies upon which those legends and folklore are based. Goldman imagined the Tong Wars being a continuation of one of those centuries-old supernatural feuds and how it could be amusing for a stereotypical cowboy hero to find himself in a Chinese fantasy adventure underneath 1860's San Francisco.
    The studio and the director changed it to a modern setting so that the "real" world would seem more familar to the audience, so the supernatural underworld would feel that much more bizarre and alien. Chinese Tongs and organized crime operating in The US was still a thing in the 80's but they weren't shooting each other in the streets.

    This reaction video is something. Its funny because the way shes so confused and lost watching it is **exactly** how Jack feels experiencing it and how the filmmakers expected (western🙄) audiences to experience, and that makes it brilliant.
    Although some of this reaction is just ridiculous, like have they ever heard of editing? Weird stuff lol😂😂😂

  • @monsterlair
    @monsterlair Год назад +6

    The only way someone can call Big Trouble in Little China "bad" is if their cinematic vocabulary was formed only during the first 10 years of the current millennium, when every other damn movie had to be gritty and dark because of 9/11.

    • @Starlet_Blossom
      @Starlet_Blossom  Год назад

      I mean I loved the movie... it's just very bizzare and random at times that's why I said it's so bad it's good. It not being gritty and dark has nothing to do with it.

    • @monsterlair

      @@Starlet_Blossom I should have been more clear, what i said was not a criticism of you or this reaction, which i really enjoyed.
      I'm questioning those who recommended this as a "serious so bad it's good movie" to you.
      When i think of serious movies that are so bad they are good, the laughs are always unintentional. I think of direct-to-video, bad dialogue, cheap effects and trying to make something cool and awesome with not enough money or craftsmanship. The kind of stuff Relettermedia watches.
      Big trouble in Little China does not fit this description. It is not serious, it's very tounge-in-cheek and every comedic beat is intentional. It had a sizeable budget of around $25M that is all up on the screen.
      My guess is that this recommendation came your way, not because it fit what you asked for, but simply because they wanted you to see it. 🙂

    The phone was so they could try to bluff their way past the security guards at the front desk by posing as telephone repairmen. When he walks in, if you listen, he says something like, (I’m paraphrasing) “Ok, guys, we’ll get your service back up real soon, (he points to the side door & says) “this must be the way to the main panel” During that time, Wang is translating in Chinese for Jack.
    That’s why they have the phone..

    Kurt Russell was supposed to be the lead, traditional hero, that's what he and director Carpenter told the studios to get the film bankrolled. But they always intended Jack to be sidekick to Wang. The joke is Jack thinks he's Batman, but he's really Robin. Lol

    Some films are ridiculous due to the lack of vision in script or directing. John Carpenter's Big Trouble was designed in script to be wild from the jump. Jack was the audience. When Jack was confused Carpenter knew the audience would also be confused.

    Lol the whole point of the movie is Jack is the sidekick he is useless. The only thing he can do is catch a bottle, so the potion he took enhances his natural ability so he could catch the knife meant to kill him. Also I think jack was posing as a telephone repair guy checking the lines that's why he carried a phone in, he had no other valid prop to sell his story. Salt water implies a diverted natural water source so a way back out to escape.

    The deal about salt water is San Franciso is on the ocean coast. So the water being saltwater being a big deal is they could be drown in the ocean which is very very deep.

  • @vapoet
    @vapoet Год назад +3

    The salty water is important because they are in San Francisco. The water is at lest from the bay, if not the ocean itself. San Francisco is a series of hills, meaning they went a LONG way down in that elevator. There are a lot of underground levels. I'm glad you figured out about Jack. The scene at the very beginning was added because the studio execs didn't like that Jack was a sidekick, not a hero. They needed to say "He showed great courage."

    That fight with the Truck is deliberately strange and confusing to put the audience in the same position as Jack. The weirdness escalates steadily until the end when Jack has kind of acclimated himself to the madness of Little China. It also allows them to vomit exposition at the audience without slowing anything down as the plot rollercoasters forward.
    It never occurred to me that they were put in wheel chairs when they got captured because Lo Pan is an a-hole and makes people come before him in wheelchairs so he doesn't have to look up to them.
