Jenny 5 is alive! Johnny 5 is one of the most endearing robots in cinema. He's so emotive with his 'lashes', eyes, and body language. It really is a great feat of prop work to make him move so well, especially when interacting with objects and people. You need to see the sequel asap ✌
"Is he going to fall in love with Ally Sheedy?" Why not, everyone else in the mid-80s did. If this movie had taken place a year earlier, Number 5 might have run into The Goonies: Both movies took place in Astoria, Oregon. Robots appearing in this movie: 1, King Zarkon from Voltron; 2, Leonardo the Ninja Turtle; 3, Dr. Benton Quest; and 5, Frank The Pug.
I think the first one was better but seen some people say they loved the second one more. Ahh yeah, I always thought the pug mighta been cheech marin or somebody before I found that out.
As much as people give Fisher Stevens grief about the “stereotype”, he actually found a mentor and voice coach that taught him the right accent for the region of India, a lot of the right mannerisms, and he just did a good job. Did the script really need the engineer to be an Indian? Probably not, but a lot of the jokes put in Ben’s mouth are dependent upon a linguistic and cultural unfamiliarity with America for them to make sense. It also works as a great contrast, because you start to see where Johnny 5 gets a lot of his personality: it’s a combination of Newton and Ben’s interactions they have in the lab, which must’ve remained in Johnny 5’s memory.
The voice of Johnny 5 was done by Johnny 5's operator, Tim Blaney. He read the lines for Johnny 5 to help the other actors in their role, with the intent of hiring a voice actor later to overdub Tim's voice. However, they liked Tim's portrayal and kept it.
When Jen was distraught over Number 5 getting blown up, I was actually remaining quiet in person so as to not spoil the movie for the person in the screen, then realized what I'd done afterward and that she couldn't, in fact, hear me.

The Saturday Night Fever scene is actually a little bit of an Easter egg...both SNF and Short Circuit were directed by John Badham, who also directed Blue Thunder, WarGames, and Stakeout, all fantastic 80s movies!
As humans we are hard coded to see faces in things, see pareidolia, however when we add human features to things we can really amplify an emotional connection to them and attribute emotional responses to otherwise non-human parts. Though it also runs the risk of causing a negative reaction when we try to make something look too hunan, but it’s off. The uncanny valley in other words; I think that’s also why some people are put off by clowns. They have human features, but the way they behave and sometimes move their faces are not quite right and it triggers a negative reaction.
@@joeb918 Same as why most on-screen aliens are humanoid or at least have some humanoid characteristics. If you try and portray a truly alien-looking non-humanoid creature as a main character (not just a monster) the audience can't relate. Works in print when it's your imagination though.
Whaaaaat? I didn't think I'd ever see any of my favorite reactors get around this one. Totally underrated gem from the era. Wow, really looking forward to watching this one.
I have been slightly obsessed with this movie since childhood (See user name and profile picture, which is a working Johnny Five head I built, running off of a microcomputer and servo controller)
Heard of people hooking up ChatGPT to their little bots. Now they got eyes feeding them input and can interact with reality. Some making their own AI and playing around with those. Just dudes at home tinkering. Haven't come across any amateur who has done both well but plenty of weapons companies messing around with it. Drone lift a robo-puppy with guns that can clear a hotel yet can't tell friend from foe. I wonder who will get to Johnny 5 first?
My dad used to teach an aerobics class at the YMCA in the 80s, and that was one of the songs on the workout tape. I heard that damn song so many damn times.
Semi Fun Fact -- at the Elementary School Activity Day for fifth and sixth grade everyone got t-shirts with whatever name and number they wanted to, and _everyone_ thought I was being too boring by just putting "Johnny" as my name. But yes, my number was 5 so I was Johnny 5 :P . Oh, and PLEASE watch Part 2.
Hey Hey there Jen Murray! Part 2 is ok, worth a watch. The disassembly of the car was hilarious, the other robots reprogrammed to act like the 3 stooges absolutely priceless. Love ❤your reaction as always. Have a good night. 😊
I had this movie on VHS as a kid. It was one of the only movies we had so I watched it like 30 times in one summer. 😂 I was obsessed with how Johnny 5 was put together and built a reasonable facsimile of him out of Lego.
This was a heck of a movie when it came out. There were several different builds, some requiring a number of people to control at once. This movie also brought robotics to the mainstream, influencing many kids to pursue the field. It was also the Legos/Construx/Erector set generation so many motorized creations were born. It was one of the few VHS tapes I wore out as a kid.
That was great, you could tell the exact second when her voice changed during the “Oh No” from movie concern to real concern. There was an audible change in her tone.
Sorry that I missed the premiere, Jen, I only got home after it had passed. This is such a lovely and funny film, I'm so glad that you liked it. Yes, please react to "Short Circuit 2" as it's just as much fun as this. 😊
I remember my dad talking my brother and I to see this when it came out in '86....I was 12 and my little brother was 9. Lol....being a kid in the '80s was thee best! Long live Generation X...
You definitely need to watch number 2 “Los locos kick your ass. Los locos kick your face. Los locos kick your balls INTO OUTER SPACE!”. I never really re-watched this after seeing it as a kid, but it still blew my mind when i realised the “Indian” guy, Ben, was in fact played by Fisher Stevens, who most certainly is not Indian.
This was a blast from the past, this movie came out a year before I was born! Ngl it’s kinda’ wild in retrospect seeing Bobcat Goldthwaite playing an Indian guy.😅😅😅
Robots were very much the thing back in the early ‘80s. Most of the Johnny 5 stuff was more puppetry than actual robotics but he was inspired by things happening in the field at the time. There’s an AWESOME science fiction movie called “The Ice Pirates” that put out a call for any and all robots to populate the futuristic world of the movie and someone clearly had a lot of fun with it. The pimp robot has to be seen to be believed. 😂
Very happy you did this movie. John Badham the director was the cameraman when Stephanie was being interviewed by the news. It took 25 men off screen wearing telemetry suits to move #5's arms and other parts. There were 20 robots and numerous spare parts to film this movie. You recognize Steve Guttenberg and G W Bailey who starred together in Police academy. You will love short circuit 2 as well.
Definitely watch the sequel. An 80's movie I would recommend is Cloak & Dagger. It stars Henry Thomas who played Elliot in E.T. and Dabney Coleman. Not a well known movie but one of my favorite from the 80's
Newton Crosby's co-worker was played by Fisher Stevens. He was also in the 90's TV series "Early Edition" with Kyle Chandler (from Friday Night Lights), but played a co-worker as well. Early Edition was a show about a man (Chandler) who got tomorrow's paper...today! Nice show, and Fisher Stevens directed many of them!
Hello Jen, the movie was filmed in Astoria Oregon and you kept on seeing the Astoria bridge in the movie. It's my favorite place and everyone who knows me, knows I love going there. I live in Vancouver washington, near Portland Oregon. My friend Amy, her boyfriend owns the short circuit house and turns into a bed and breakfast. Shoe roller skates a lot when she's visiting her boyfriend.
This was filmed in my hometown. I was only five at the time... The town has changed A LOT. Also we only get lightning storms once every two or three years... The "sunrise" at 8:33 was actually a sunset that they pretend it was a sunrise
I watched the sequel loads of times as a kid but never got the chance to see this one. Thanks for the glimpse, this one was fun. Loved the reaction Jen!!!
After seeing this in the theater, I thought Short Circuit would be a bigger hit and the toy stores would be loaded with Johnny Five dolls and merch. But I guess it was not enough of a hit.
I watched these movies so much as a kid and I had no idea Fisher Stevens was in brown face. He's so good in these movies. One of the rare instances where people love the performance but say it probably shouldn't be done today. Johnny 5 was my favourite growing up, also I had a big crush on Ally Sheedy 😍😍
Great reaction to this 80s classic Jen....I recommend you also checking out the underrated late 80s sequel 'Short Circuit 2', in my opinion it is just as good as the original.
16:48 "Is he gonna program _them_ to be alive?" That would be a very interesting idea. He probably would've if he knew exactly how _he_ had ended up alive.
This movie was part of the era of cute animatronic characters that were the focus of their movies, or even the actual main characters. This includes ET, Howard the Duck, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batteries Not Included, Mac and Me, and Garbage Pail Kids, to name a few.
Hello Jen! So you like watching movies, Well I have 4 old movies later 70's early 80's, I know you'll love shocking slap stick Comedy, The 1st Slap Shot with Paul Newmen, The 2nd Porky's 1 & 2, and finally Real Men with Jamie's Bulshi and John Ridder, They are 💎 Diamond in the Ruff, You'll love them. 😂!
I LOVE this movie. Being a sci-fi nerd in the 80s, robots were a thing I just loved, and this movie is one of the best robots. I especially love how peaceful and innocent Johnny 5 is, not the typical killer robot from an AI gone wrong story (and if it was that kind of story, Schroder would have been the hero, Crosby the idiot scientist endangering everyone because he couldn't stand his creation being destroyed or because he thought the potential was too important). And the great line, when Crosby asks Johnny 5 who told him it was wrong to kill, and 5 says "I told me." We saw that moment with the cricket. When Stephane explained death to him in terms of the cricket, Number 5 realized he was alive and did not want to die. If he is alive and does not want to die, then other things that are alive do not want to die. Ergo, to make dead is wrong. Also, a minor meme in my household back then (before memes were thing): Fish! Salmon! SUSHI!
"scrotum" was Harris in the police academy series. The story of Johnny 5 does continue in short circuit 2, if you were interested in seeing it. a lot of people saw a similarity between Johnny 5 and WALL-E, at least in the expressive face and the tracks for movement, myself included. I'm glad you enjoyed it! it is a classic for sure.
Even though I was a little kid when this was released in 1986, I still remember seeing it in the theaters, and I’ve continued to enjoyed it and it’s sequel despite their flaws. Yes, they actually made the robots for the movie, and each robot weighed 250 pounds. But #1-4 were built to have the most basic of functions, and in most of the shots when they are in self transport or sitting still, it’s usually a non functional upper body sitting on a powered chassis , but they also had arms and heads that could do very basic movement when they needed them to. Now as far as Number 5, they spent $1.5 million of the $15 million budget creating him, and he had three interchangeable radio controlled heads were built to help properly articulate different facial expressions throughout a scene. But any time you only see Number 5’s arm doing something, like rolling down a window, and you don’t see Number 5 in the scene, it means that it was too complicated for the robot to actually do, and it is one of the puppeteers with a spare arm in that specific shot. And the sound of Number 5’s laser firing, is the same sound effect as the Ghostbuster’s proton pack powering up. 2:19 I don’t know why I feel bad for him, he’s just a robot. Don’t worry Jen, that will change by the end of the movie.
Massive massive childhood favourite of mine! And i still love it 38 years later... Jeez...38 years! How time flies! I always wanted my very own Johnny 5, but never did get one...maybe one day I will 🥰
Great reaction from Jen! And she was having so much fun she didn't see the old switcheroo coming. The 1980's sure had robots at different ends of the spectrum, The Terminator (1984) and Short Circuit/#5 (1986).
Few reactions to this so your shock at the "number 5 death" was exactly the same as I remember as a kid. We think the movie was great with a bad ending but no, it was a facsimile, doppelganger. The sequel deals with trust and emotions so I think you will like it. Also recommend Cocoon and Batteries not included for your 80's watch list.

Fisher Stevens did such a good job playing an Indian guy that actual East Indians thought he was one.

This was filmed in my hometown. I was only five at the time...
The town has changed A LOT.
Also we only get lightning storms once every two or three years...
The "sunrise" at 8:33 was actually a sunset that they pretend it was a sunrise
This was a family favorite when I was a kid. There was a time where I could quote this movie beginning to end I'd seen it so many times.
I wanted a toy johnny 5 like the second movie had
I watched these movies so much as a kid and I had no idea Fisher Stevens was in brown face. He's so good in these movies. One of the rare instances where people love the performance but say it probably shouldn't be done today.
Johnny 5 was my favourite growing up, also I had a big crush on Ally Sheedy 😍😍
"He's so cute!"
Just like me.
"He makes a mess wherever he goes"
Yeah, that's also me.
I watched the heck out of this movie as a kid. The other movie I paired with this one was "Batteries Not Included"
My mom loved this movie. Your reaction to it is bringing back fond memories of her. Thank you.
Great reaction to this 80s classic Jen....I recommend you also checking out the underrated late 80s sequel 'Short Circuit 2', in my opinion it is just as good as the original.
The quote "Life is not a malfunction" describes this film perfectly.
" No disassemble Johnny 5 "
I think that was my tag line in the 90s on my email packets.
16:48 "Is he gonna program _them_ to be alive?"
That would be a very interesting idea.
This movie was my whole childhood. There's a worn out VHS somewhere out there I watched the heck out of.
No disassemble.
I was 6 when I saw this in the theater. Loved it then, love it now. Shared it with my kids. They loved it too.
I loved this movie as a kid. I haven't watched it in years. It was fun revisting it again. Great reaction as always, Jen. 👍
YOu still need to see "Rob Roy". You'll love the music, big time.
One of my favorite movies as a child, and I don't think I've seen anyone else react to it. Awesome!
