  • My review of the new Fujifilm Fujinon 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens! Yes I've Got it at Last! It's a cracker and now at last I can get in that much closer to my subjects. Shooting handheld at 300mm 457 mm focal length (full frame equivalent) and with 5.5 stops of image stabilisation, it's relatively compact and lightweight too! All video shot hand held, with some shots resting elbows on a fence. And yes, it's VERY Sharp!
    Camera used Fuji XT3 and for Audio a Rode Micro + Tascam DR-05X

    I sold my 55-200 in anticipation of buying this lens. Given that I’m still waiting for the new 27 mm 2.8 that I ordered in mid March, I wish I hadn’t sold the 55-200. I can understand your enthusiasm with receiving your lens after what likely felt like a LONG wait. Enjoy your new lens!!

    I got along with the 55-200 for travel, and do love the sharpness and qualities of the 100-400; but it hard to use “ with a moments notice” scenario.

      Thanks for your kind comments! Yep, it's great lens and a recent firmware update has improved the focussing whilst zooming too! I would've loved the 100-400, but practicality, cost and size ruled it out for me. I's used almost on a daily basis on my travels etc! Cheers👍

    I ordered this lens in February and received it right on time when it was released. (For once, I was ahead of the curve.) I used it extensively to shoot a powwow with AF-C and found it to be rapid focusing and very sharp with my X-T4. It's not only a bargain, but also an excellent lens.

    Hi Nigel. Great review. Just to say, I have the 100 to 400 Fuji lens, which is very nice. Image quality etc. But it is very heavy compared to the 70 to 300. I do a fair amount of walking around with my cameras and the 100 to 400 is too heavy for me, to do that. ( I tend to use a Sony RX10MK4 - which is lighter and has a massive zoom). But as you say Fuji lenses do produce some consistently good results. I love my Fuji cameras

    • @NigelHarperPhoto
      @NigelHarperPhoto  2 года назад

      Thanks for your comment! Yes, the 70-300 is a lot more portable and lightweight and I use it a lot. If I could justify (and afford it) then I would love the 100-400, but the portability issue is a problem. Cheers!👍

    In case no one has mentioned it yet, the image stabilizer can be turned off in the menu. I think you can put a shortcut for it on one of the buttons on xt3 and newer cameras. You can also put a shortcut in the customizable menu.

    Fantastic review. Most reviews have insufficient images and video to get a decent look at what a lens can do. You nailed it. Nice vocals too. So envious of you English with your sophisticated accents. Nice pics mate - great vid too. Astia looked good. Do you do a special white balance when you shoot? Or just use Auto, or Outdoors??? Many thanks, Cam from NZ.

    Great review. I’ve wanted one of these lenses for awhile and finally seeing they are becoming available again. But I own a 50-140 (with the 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverter). So I’m having a challenge justifying this newer lens. Though i could use the extra reach, and avoid some cropping to preserve picture quality.

    • @NigelHarperPhoto

      Thanks Bill! Your lens with a 2x converter would give nearly the same reach and I guess with a F5.6 max aperture. The only variable may be picture quality? Cheers!

    I see you have bought the ‘Fewgee’ 70-300. I bought the ‘Foogee’ 70-300 and I reckon mine is just as brilliant😂😂😂😂😂. Seriously though it is a great lens and I am now using it on the X-T5 and it is showing its image quality even more. It certainly coped with the higher Rez sensor and is getting close to the quality of the 50-140. I need to test it more on fast tracked subjects to see how good the pair work together because when I used it on the X-T4 it wasn’t good and regularly didn’t nail focus even in single focus mode where as on an X-T1 body I would nail it every time. Perhaps the Ibis was conflicting with the OIS. So far it is working really well with the X-T5.

    • @NigelHarperPhoto
      @NigelHarperPhoto  Год назад

      OK OK, I know, I've always pronounced it Fewgee! Hahaha and it's probably to late to change now🙃 Anyway, after over a year with the 70-300, I've decided to review it again. I'm still using a pair of X-T3's and sometime in 2023, may go for either the XH2 or XT5, we'll see! Anyway, the one frustrating issue is nailing focus with a moving subject ie bird in flight on full telephoto in single point or multi point focus. The lens hunts and I usually miss the shot. Fuji X-T3 focus system maybe the issue, who knows. Anyway, I'm going to produce a video on this and we'll see if it's the lens, the camera, or my crap technique! Cheers👍

    50 FPS can cropped your sensor down so it means the video is not a real 4K maybe a little bit less 10% and expand back to 4K. so there is a quality differences between the FPS numbers.
    Better to use 4K at 25fps with Eternal during low light or night.

    • @NigelHarperPhoto
      @NigelHarperPhoto  3 года назад

      Yes, I agree! Sometimes I use 25fps, but it's because i often slow my wildlife footage down for a smoother slo mo and shoot 50 fps that works for me. Cheers!

    Question, does 55-200 keep focus when zooming? I meant that 55-200 won't go completely out of focus like 70-300 when you zoom in or out? This important to me as I will use it for video. Thanks.

    • @NigelHarperPhoto
      @NigelHarperPhoto  2 года назад +1

      Hi John, That's a good question! The 70-300 holds focus only if you zoom in or out slowly with the autofocus hunting very slightly. So the slower the better! However, the 55-200 was a lot better in this respect as you can see in my 'Rampa' video which was mostly shot on the 55-200 - ruclips.net/video/DW7AuNYG-tM/видео.html So, rapid zooming with autofocus is not recommended! And although I do mostly shoot video with it (in 4K) I rarely ever zoom whilst shooting. I'm glad you brought this up, as having had the lens now for nearly a year, it's time I did an update and will look at ways to try get around the issue! Cheers👍

    • @johndao5870

    Great video - out of interest, what shutter speed did you film the 50fps footage at? I recently tried 50fps at 100th sec and although it looked great in a 25p timeline slowed down to 25p, it looked really staccato and strange with bird movements at 50p/100th in 25p timeline.

    • @NigelHarperPhoto
      @NigelHarperPhoto  Год назад

      Thank you! The shutter speed I use is double the FPS rate so 50fps is 1/100 sec and in a 50fps timeline usually. Slowing down below 25% in Final Cut is just about OK, but using 'Optical Flow' it smooths any jerkiness out quite well. I shoot everything in 4K, which gives me great cropping flexibility, as mostly I output in 1080P. Cheers👍
