FUJIFILM XF70-300mm or XF50-140mm2.8 IN BIRDS/WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

- In this video I tried to used the new XF70-300mm F4-5.6 and my all around lens 50-140mm 2.8 in birding. Both lenses I tried in taking videos as well as in photos. Both lenses give a satisfactory sharpness and detailed subjects. Autofocus on both were also fast using the xt4 as a body camera.
On the reach of both lenses in this particular field of photography the 70-300mm has the advantage. The 50-140mm can do but you need to crop your images that will change and reduce the quality and pixels of your original images.

I think for wildlife most people would be better getting the 70-300mm because of the longer focal length. It will give you better reach that you need, especially for smaller birds-the longer the better generally. Even if you had the 50-140 f2.8 then put a 2x T.C on the focal length is still shorter at around 280mm and a max aperture of F5.6 anyway so no advantage (and could be a bit softer due to using teleconverter). My main frustration with the 70-300mm is that here in the UK it's still on pre-order!
Hi Steve, yes for me 70-300 is more better in wildlife, the 50-140 i usually used it as my multi purpose camera specially in portraits and events but in wildlife reach is not that good, yes even when you pun teleconverter still not enough, but when your subjects is near 2-3 meters and no problem very nice depth of field and so sharp in f8.
Here in Netherlands I waited for almost 2 weeks also before I recieved this lens..

So both lenses are sharp, I don't shoot much wildlife here in Iceland but I want a telephoto for landscapes and it looks like the 70-300 is more portable and obviously good value for money. Salamat for the upload if you ever want to visit Iceland I'm sure me and my asawa could show you around 😉
Yes but the 70-300 I think is better for you specially when you always travel it is lighter than the 50-140 and macro capabilities of 70-300 is way better than the 50-140. Good luck! Thanks for visiting my channel

This is the kind of comparison i wanted. Thank you. Even if the 50 to 140 is a red lens. I need the range on the 70 to 300mm. Maybe if i wait a little more i can get the teased 160 to 800.

How come a lot of the photos are taken at f8? Wouldn't using the f2.8 at 2.8 have shown the background separation better vs the 300mm?

I have a question if you don't mind. I'm considering the 50-140, and I happen to have the same backpack you used here. How does the 50-140 fit inside? Did you manage to put both lenses and camera in main compartment?

Yes I made 3 compartments, at the center the 50-140mm and on the side the 70-300 and 80mm. But sometime it depends on the event or photography I do. When it includes portrait I always get the 50-140, on Wildlife I just get the 70-300 and same with lanscape only the 16mm

Yes it is. For me in bigger birds i always used f8
Personally I think you are wasting your time with both lenses if bird photography is your aim, minimum get the 100-400 and the 1.4 and or a 600mm and use it with an adepter, both Nikon And canon mount lenses can be used with a fringer AF adapter.
Thank you for your comment! Anyway 300mm is fine for me and I prefer not to used teleconverter..I do love photographing birds and I am already satisfied with the results of the photos. Yes I know 400 has a longer reach but what i have just said 300mm is fine for me.. and also I am fine with my Crop Sensor Fuji camera that i have for now. Again thank you.
