They worked together on stage in a comedy skit with Stephen Fry and Rowan Atkinson a long time ago, it is on youtube somewhere. Masters of their craft! Thank you for posting this excellent video.
This may be one of the most important videos I've ever watched. First time I watched this Ferguson fellow and it was all thanks to Hugh. And it was so good I decided to keep going and so I have spent hours on end watching Craig.
When 'House' came out, my only exposure to Hugh Laurie was in 'Blackadder', so I immediately had to find out if he was a Brit who could sound American, an American who could sound British, or maybe Canadian... Imagine my surprise when I discovered that he's actually a Guatemalan performance artist, born Hugo Laredos, and has been doing his "Hugh Laurie" act for over 40 years! And by 'discovered' I mean 'made up to see how many people don't read the whole comment before they start hating'. :-)
There are so many accents in Britain that you can't even imagine. Americans call it all "British accent" and that's also the case with "American accent" thing.
unfortunately Americans seem to have forgotten how to come with original ideas where TV and Cinema is concerned. Thankfully the UK is picking up our slack in our hour of need. Thank you UK for bringing a sense of originality to an otherwise predictable entertainment industry! In all seriousness I think it mainly has to do with the fact that American production companies aim almost exclusively to children / teens / young adults while the UK still sees the need for adult programming.
Ferg, I'm British and have been watching Hugh on T.V, since I was knee high to a grass hopper. I was laughing at Kelliop's epic ignorance. But I do sincerely and unreservedly apologise from the bottom of my heart that my country inflicted Simon Carroll on the world. I think after we produced so many good actors the universe needed some kind of balance and he was spawned.
Thank you so much! You're the only person that knows what they're talking about on youtube! I had a lot of American's raging at me when I posted a comment because they thought Ireland was part of Britian! Which we all know, only Northern Ireland is part of the UK, not GB.
I can't stop watching this it's comedy gold! It's almost like it's prepared, the way they're bouncing jokes of each other and generally being silly, but they just have a similar sense of humour. I have to say though the excessive laughter puts me off (e.g. clapping at 2:27 just for sitting back down?!) but that's how american audiences seem to be.
...erm... yes he is. He was born in Glasgow which is in Scotland, which is a part of Great Britan making him British. He's not English but he is British.
@Fergufool That's kinda nice to hear! It's almost like some American audiences can't distinguish between what REALLY deserves a laugh and something that is just slightly humourous because all the laughter seems the same intensity. I find it a bit offputting tbh!
@Fergufool i agree with you . i have DVDs of both English and american whose line is it anyway and you do notice the difference in audience reaction . clap and laugh only when the performers do something worthy of it . i admit Hugh Laurie and Craig Ferguson are very funny together .
Look, I'm a Brit, we call it an American Accent because that's what it is. Even though there are different American accents, they are accents FROM America. We're not trying to be disrespectful. It's just like a load of Americans call it a British accent, which is actually worse cause, they imediatly asume the only British accent is the posh, up-market one that very few people actually speak like.
it used to be that parents tried to marry their daughters off as soon as possible, but now it's a given that all fathers don't want their daughters to even date, and even some mothers are like that too. women becoming more independent made the custom of early marriage die off, but the aversion to daughters having sex is still going strong. I know there are reasons for it, but it still seems silly.
John Cleese, Simon Pegg, Michael Caine, Ian McKellen (FUCKING GANDALF), Sean Connery (JAMES IAUSFN BOND), Christopher Lee (SARUMAN DUDE), Anthony Hopkins (HANNIBALOLOL), Daniel Day-Lewis, Colin Firth, Ben Kingsley, Roger Moore, Liam Neeson (Ras "THE NINJA" al ghuUuUul), Gary Oldman... that's the ones i could think of now, oh, and YEAH, HUGH LAURIE. He is Brittish. I'm not from the UK or anything, so if your about to insult me about being British then don't... cause i'm not, lol.
I always enjoy when craig has english guests on the show, still have hard time with comming with terms hugh's english lol, always heard him use an american accent instead of an english one, it kind of confuses me you know. :)
Hey brits, don't get angry if people outside UK gets confused about being brit, being welsh, english or whatever. Every country has its things, I mean, many people call americans yankies, and as far as I know yankies are (or were??)those in the north part of U.S. I'm spanish, and yesterday I watched a british series' episode where they said someone was from Spain and she's crearly from latin america and spoke like them.If it means no harm,if it isn't xenophobic or mean,Its not that important! :)
@Fergufool George Carlin quit school, at 15 years of age... Truman Capote didn't go to University. They were two American's who didn't need so called "higher education". Mark Twain said: "I never let schooling get in the way of my education."
As I said, I know the reasons for it, but it still seams silly. And the aversion to daughters having sex is not just caused by wanting to protect and to stop unwanted pregnancies. My friend's parents don't want to even hear that their precious MARRIED daughter might be having sex. They want grandchildren, but still will be sad when she gets pregnant because it's proof of sex. I think it has more to do with the irrational association between virginity and innocence.
@4:34 - it's not ridiculous! Just look at your God-damn thighs, man! ;-) Okay, I've now discovered that Craig Ferguson interviewing Hugh Laurie is the best thing that could ever happen to entertainment!
yeah, it causes frustration to no end. they're not allowed to sleep in the same room at her parents' house. the thing is, whenever I bring it up to anyone over 60, they usually respond with, "That's a bit extreme, but I can understand. That's their little girl, after all." my brother thinks it's fine, and always says that he would be happiest if his little girls became nuns. of course, he expects grandchildren from his son. the sexual double standard is a pet peeve of mine.
i'm so used to hearing hugh laurie with an american accent that it is weird watching him in the show black adder with Rowan Atkinson with his british accent i do wonder though if he has lost the british accent
Interestingly enough, Hugh Laurie _did_ have a show about old houses and butlers. Two of them, if I'm not mistaken. While he was living in Britain. His home country. Because he's British.
So according to this practice, one could say that Londoners live on and in Great Britain, while Anglesey residents are in but not on. And if Scotland seceded, Glaswegians would be on but not in Great Britain whilst Orcadians would be right out. How could anyone be confused? :) And by the way, if England is a country, what is the UK? Or vice versa? Okay, throttle that pedant!! Let's get back to Craigy and Hugh cuddling.
@Fergufool Isn't it the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland? Calling people from Northern Ireland British will anger about half the people there and you can get Irish passports if you live there.
That's one way of looking at it, which is valid, but you could also say (as some do) that American audiences are relaxed and lively, versus uptight and dull British ones. Either way, the clapping wasn't for them sitting back down but for the joke that preceded it. And please don't assume that any recorded show is an accurate representation of American audiences. Between editing, recorded laughter and applause getting added in and producers prodding audience reaction, it's not all real.
Hmm..So how is it when andy murray wins! he's british, but when he loses he scottish? Example he loses the wimbledon final he's no longer british, but scottish again!
I've never liked the show house, I only know hugh from a bit of fry and laurie as well as jeeves and wooster. None of my friends here in Canada have heard of his old shows but they all know house, oh well lol
brits do less shows with lower budgets because they have an incredibly small film industry compared to hollywood. in fact, the only film industry in the wold that is on the same level money-wise is bollywood. add to that, britain has a way smaller population than the united states, so there are LESS actors to begin with.
Emma Thompson called him the sexiest man she's ever met. There was another person who said that... but I forget who they are... nonetheless.. this guy is hot in person. Fuck film. Fuck PR. People that know you.. and find you HOT...are the true labeler's... of who you are.
They worked together on stage in a comedy skit with Stephen Fry and Rowan Atkinson a long time ago, it is on youtube somewhere. Masters of their craft! Thank you for posting this excellent video.
I cant get enough of watching Hugh and the two of them together is priceless.
superb interview... both people have a sense of humor

And by 'discovered' I mean 'made up to see how many people don't read the whole comment before they start hating'. :-)
I was half expecting him to come in with his cane! Silly how watching the show for years made me think that Hugh Laurie+Jeans+Cane=House
These two are just too adorable together...
There are so many accents in Britain that you can't even imagine. Americans call it all "British accent" and that's also the case with "American accent" thing.
"Are you having an worldly pleasures?"
"No. As a matter of fact, I send them back."
:D
why the hell is this interview only 11 minutes????
have i been watching too much House mkv's, or is Hugh Laurie clutching his right thigh?
unfortunately Americans seem to have forgotten how to come with original ideas where TV and Cinema is concerned. Thankfully the UK is picking up our slack in our hour of need. BEST.INTERVIEW.EVER
So weird to hear Hugh in his native tongue. He does a great American accent. This is the first time I've seen him not on the show.
Wearing jeans like a boss
I can't stop watching this it's comedy gold! It's almost like it's prepared, the way they're bouncing jokes of each other and generally being silly, but they just have a similar sense of humour. I have to say though the excessive laughter puts me off (e.g. clapping at 2:27 just for sitting back down?!) but that's how american audiences seem to be.
I love Simon!! I wish I could hear you Brits arguing all these posts. I'd just sit and smile & just enjoy your accents
...erm... yes he is. He was born in Glasgow which is in Scotland, which is a part of Great Britan making him British. He's not English but he is British.
Whats funny is Hugh been a tv actor in England for 20+ years, his skit show black mamba is real funny
Yep! He is "the House I'd like in my underpants" LOL
Lol it's not the "character" that's sexy, it's the actor ;)
one of the sexiest men everrrr
i love him
that is a really nice tie
LOL. That's what it was like for me when I found out he was British and heard his real accent.
@Fergufool That's kinda nice to hear! It's almost like some American audiences can't distinguish between what REALLY deserves a laugh and something that is just slightly humourous because all the laughter seems the same intensity. I find it a bit offputting tbh!
About 60% of the talented actors in American TV and movies are Canadian or English.
@Fergufool i agree with you . i have DVDs of both English and american whose line is it anyway and you do notice the difference in audience reaction . clap and laugh only when the performers do something worthy of it . i admit Hugh Laurie and Craig Ferguson are very funny together .
lol 7:28 is so totally true.
"If you're going to do that again, would you mind switching off your microphone?"
Look, I'm a Brit, we call it an American Accent because that's what it is. Even though there are different American accents, they are accents FROM America. We're not trying to be disrespectful.

I love Hugh Laurie so much like I don't even just all of the love
Quality... not quantity!!!
Without a doubt this was my most favourite interview followed by the Jim Parsons nd Kaley Cuoco

5:13 .. Don't you mean Extreme "House" Makeover, Craig? ;)
Hey brits, don't get angry if people outside UK gets confused about being brit, being welsh, english or whatever. Diced carrot...Billy Connelly reference
?????????????? Criag is Scottish....Scotland is part of the island known as Britain...hence he is British!! What planet are you on????
He's british for sure, he just isn't english.
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are Great Britain, hence British, accept it.
@crazypianolady when you get used to it you start to block it out but it can get annoying at times...
"effete" is just the french word for powerless.
.... Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Jude Law, Gerard Butler, Rowan Atkinson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Paul Bettany, Ricky Gervais, some more British actors :)
I hate to ask but, what's that word he uses at 04:05?
Hahaha i love them both!
i love craig! he's witty, fun and his accent isn't very thick! if he wasn't married....maybe. but in a mature kind of way, he's sexy
those are the worst jeans ever on television
Wait. 5th May 2008? That was my sixteenth birthday
@Fergufool
George Carlin quit school, at 15 years of age...
Truman Capote didn't go to University. They were
two American's who didn't need so called "higher
education".
Mark Twain said:
"I never let schooling get in the way of my education."
I think his American accent is sexy
woah I scroll down to read the comments for a little while and then when I scroll back up they're both invading personal space in a very enjoyable way
01:24 = Hugasm + Fergasm~!!!!
As I said, I know the reasons for it, but it still seams silly. And the aversion to daughters having sex is not just caused by wanting to protect and to stop unwanted pregnancies. he definitely is a US citizen - his citizenship ceremony was broadcast on the show in 2008 ;-)
@4:34 - it's not ridiculous! Just look at your God-damn thighs, man! ;-) Okay, I've now discovered that Craig Ferguson interviewing Hugh Laurie is the best thing that could ever happen to entertainment!
one person missed the like button over there...
It's not a matter of cutting school, it's that our schools don't care to teach the distinction..
Well, because there aren't as many accents and as diverse one as in the UK... and UK is a much, MUCH smaller country...
is afeet (sp?) a British word? Never heard it before. Can anyone spell it correctly for me?
yeah, it causes frustration to no end. they're not allowed to sleep in the same room at her parents' house. the thing is, whenever I bring it up to anyone over 60, they usually respond with, "That's a bit extreme, but I can understand. Benedict Cumberbatch. Stephen Fry. Patrick Stewart.
How is he not British? Can you hear him?
This was meant as a joke, but I guess many saw offense to it. eh, what can I say, sorry?
@Fergufool I'm American and I totally agree. I hate hate hate it. It's about as bad as the excessive "wooo" for hot guys. Just stop.
The pure ignorance of that statement is truly painful. Please go back to school and try listening in Geography this time.
He's British.
He can't stop talking about the airplanes, can he?
Interestingly enough, Hugh Laurie _did_ have a show about old houses and butlers. Two of them, if I'm not mistaken. While he was living in Britain. His home country.
Because he's British.
@Fergufool there is no island called Great Britain though. It's called simply Britain.
So according to this practice, one could say that Londoners live on and in Great Britain, while Anglesey residents are in but not on. And if Scotland seceded, Glaswegians would be on but not in Great Britain whilst Orcadians would be right out. How could anyone be confused? :)

Hugh has more brain cells than Craig.
@Fergufool Isn't it the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland? Calling people from Northern Ireland British will anger about half the people there and you can get Irish passports if you live there.
Didn't you know? I hear they have a sign that tells the audience to laugh and clap.
@Fergufool This is the best explanation ever given, and definitely one worth passing on, not to mention awesome and entertaining: ?v=rNu8XDBSn10
effete
@Brittme2011 wow did you just say that? how embarrassing for you to be trying to correct someone and needing to be corrected
He's not British. He's English.
regarding the info for the video, Craig Ferguson is not british, he's scottish
you do realise when people say that its said as a joke.... must have gone right over your head
That's one way of looking at it, which is valid, but you could also say (as some do) that American audiences are relaxed and lively, versus uptight and dull British ones. Don't like the tie.. C:
LOL seriously
actually Craig Ferguson is Scottish, but he's not British any more because he's a US citizen, making him a Scottish American.
