He was really the best late night interviewer. The fact that he's so comfortable during his first show is quite an achievement.

+Thing Thang Craig actually cheated a bit, he'd been friends with Hugh Laurie for years. That's why he was so comfortable with him, lol.

It's funny that at this time, neither Craig nor Hugh were well-known in the US. A small niche audience knew Hugh from "A Bit of Fry & Laurie", "Black Adder", "Jeeves and Wooster", and a few other things. Craig would have been known to fans of "The Drew Carey Show", which I guess? was reasonably popular for a time, but not with anyone I know.
And now Hugh is a world-class star and Craig is primarily known as having been the most innovative TV talk show host since the form was invented.

The Drew Carey Show was a pretty big hit, but Ferguson's character was only really a supporting role, appearing considerably less than the other leads.

So cool to see this early clip. Craig became famous for tearing the question cards later in his career, here you can see him taking quick peeks at his card in front of him. I loved this show with his cold opening, and his fast wit. Gonna miss you Craig, Goeff, and Wavy.

What a difference between the starting out Craig and the established Craig. I don't know what encouraged the 'devil may care' flambouyant Craig but Hallef**kenlujah. Magic happened and changed Late Shows forever. Never afraid to make an idiot of himself, no made up questions, no fake laughter, no 'everything on the set HAS to be 'perfect'. So grateful to youtube for being able to watch a genuinely funny Late Show host do it how it should be done.

I love how Hugh is like "I haven't unpacked my suitcase... I expect to be fired any week," and the show ran for YEARS!! Not to mention, it's WEIRD seeing what the set looked like back then compared to when I started watching. Nice they finally got a budget for the show!!

    •  7 лет назад +5

But that *was* the sentiment. With every TV show it is that, basically: you never know beforehand if it'll work at all. Lots of shows get cancelled after and sometime during their first season.

    • @lindaduncan7181

Jürgen Erhard I know, Patrick Stewart was the same way about ST:TNG. He thought they didn't have a shot, that people would constantly be comparing them to ST:TOS. It's funny, some of the most popular shows, the cast thought that way. I wonder if there are ever any shows where the actors think "WHEN WILL IT END?!"

Blair Brown That does sound a bit arrogant though, that's like saying you cannot reach true success unless you become successful in America, and that simply is not true. I would say that there is a difference between being globally famous and famous in part of the world, and yes in this case that is a difference for Hugh, but he had plenty of real success before. He was already a millionaire and famous in much of Europe.

    • @Frenagon

So I started to enjoy his show less and less .
Then one night he says something about next month and somebody off stage said something to him about there won't be a next month or something like that and he looked really shocked and I guess that's when they broke the news to him on live television that he was going off the air .

We can see the pessimistic outlook of Hugh from here. He gradually gained confidence from the success of House. It has been proven from his later interviews and he has confirmed that too.
Although he was already a credible actor and comedian in UK, this show really does mean somethings to him. Good to see a such talented men finally gains his well-deserved confidence. And for me personally I am so touched by such growth.
PS Seems that Craig and Hugh know each others for a long time right?

@Matthew075 You're right. David Duchovny was the first guest when he actually became the permanent host. He and several other people who were competing for the job did try-out shows first. This show was one of those, as Melissa133012 wrote above.

If I remember correct, his very 1st Late Late as a host was on Columbus Day 2004. I remember the joke about Italian people being proud of Columbus and native indians finally knowing where they are from. Something like that, anyone remember? On July 22/2009 I was happy member of the live audience.

That was his first show as official/full-time host on January 3, 2005. However, this episode with Hugh Laurie was as a guest host on November 10, 2004, as mentioned in the description under the video, during the 4 month span of time between Kilborn's departure and the start of Ferguson's tenure.
