Beneficial insects are an amazing solution. That's what we use both in the greenhouse, grow rooms and out in the garden.

  • @OrganicMommaGA

I've heard both regarding DE, as well - that the microscopic sharp edges cut the exoskeleton of the insect, causing it to lose moisture to a fatal degree. It's so difficult to manage insects like aphids (especially in a greenhouse setting), but I think you're doing a good job at least knocking down their numbers. Our pest control guy basically said for certain ants, if you get rid of them (the ones that farm aphids), you'll no longer have an aphid problem but other ants can move in when there are not earthworms present in significant numbers. And whereas ALL types of ants do not farm aphids, many do. So - between the DE and NEEM on the plants, along with spraying, maybe adding some earthworms to your raised beds might offer a longer-term solution? Earthworms likely create more disruptions underground for ant tunnels and pathways, causing them to move elsewhere.

$4/bale!! What a blessing!!! Stock up on hay while you can! Hopefully all the rain we've been getting will make hay much more plentiful this year!! I have this coming winter's hay spoken for, which is a huge blessing. Some years it's a worry whether you can even find any!!

We have Two hay sources and one of them seems to never run dry which is very nice! They can be up to 3x the price as this hay though so we are first in line with this farm and the past 3 years we have purchased all their extra.

Been slowly catching up on your vids after vacation. You have inspired me to finally read about the neem tree! The oil we use for pesticides comes from the seeds, but oil made from the leaves apparently is used topically for dark spots/acne. Neem oil pesticide is toxic to fish, so be mindful where you use it! The neem tree is in the mahogany family, and affectionately called "Indias lilac", they grow best in hot, dry, tropical climates. Their seed is grown inside a fruit that is edible.

This so far has been my best year of “fighting” aphids. All my garden is in ground and this year I decided to leave all wildflowers that come up instead of planting flowers known to “help”. Plus some “weeds” here and there. Plus morning glory is invasive here. My observation is that the aphids have been going to the morning glory first and a few of the wildflower plants. Once the aphids have overtaken I’ve noticed the lady bugs showing up. Once too bad I carefully extract the invaded “weed” and dispose of it. So far so good and a lot less overall work.
Caterpillar is probably my biggest issue every spring but I’ve decided to only plant the crops they like in the fall/winter to hopefully avoid them a bit more.

5 year's gardening, and so far, this year was the worst, haver !! Caterpillars! Stinky bugs, you name it ! I love butterflies 🦋 but not this many .
I got so tired that after one harvest of my tomatoes I endup pulling all them out ! I couldn't eat them ... neither they will either !
If I need to use pesticides!? Might well go to the grocery store .
I usually use a solution of water and dish soap. Workes wonders , and I spray it in the evening due to the polunaters .

Over the years I’ve noticed aphids tend to go for high nitrogen items. It might be that your raised bed mix or fertilizer is attracting them with the amount of nitrogen. When we lived in Florida I used to plant yard long noodle beans as a sacrificial crop. They stayed on that and left other things alone.

Aphids and other pests indicate stressed plants, usually from poor soil health. After treatment I’d look at what might be missing. We use organic materials (off season) and goat manure/compost, aerobic, to inoculate our gardens with excellent results. Your raised bed soil is pretty new and may benefit from good compost tea. You put rabbit manure in didn’t you? That is a great help. Hope the aphids don’t bother you again.

I use DE in my chicken coop against mites. I've tried a couple different ways to use it and one involves diluting the DE in water and spraying it with a spray bottle. This method leaves behind a nice even coating of DE once it dries. It might also work like that on plants but I've never tried it :)

If you put some bricks or blocks under your hay pallets to get them a just few more inches off the ground, they would get some more air flow and distance from the moisture and it would help even more. We are blessed with a barn that has a hay loft above, even still there are leaks in the wall that let driving rain and snow in. Keeping your hay dry is a challenge.

Not much of an aphid problem here as our sparrows take care of them, but the slugs have more than taken their place. Hoping to see maybe one or two whole leaves of lettuce this season, but even that feels optimistic.
Did you end up doing anything else with the elderflower? I know you made cordial syrup. If you've strawberries yet, elderflower fritters go wonderfully with a bit of elderflower syrup and sliced fresh strawberries (and the elderflower stems make perfect handles).

Ha, there I am saying to you in email I can't usually grow lettuce in my garden at this time of year because the ants are a nightmare for farming aphids on it, and you had this ready to post. The aphids can't survive on healthy plants, because they need them low in sugars, or else they crystallise. The ants create the problem by tunnelling under plants and starving them of water, and nutrients. I can't swear to it, but either the roots die back 'air pruning' around the ant nest tunnels, the ants chew them back, or it's a combination of the two. Because I've had plants with big root balls whittled down to nearly nothing by them. It's a constant battle with the commercial compost that ended up being absolute rubbish in my beds, so it's constantly trying to become hydrophobic too. It's ant and aphid paradise!

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
