Remember: uncover your plants during the day so they dont become sun-sensitive and get weak/leggy in the dark!
I like how you did the double layer over the plants! It's never occurred to me to do that! I usually put in electric fence posts to keep the covers from crushing the plants. Your double layer is MUCH better! For next year, too late this year, it's been into the low 20's. I harvested all I could before it froze and still feeling blessed!! Prayers for your goats! God bless!
I saw living traditions Homestead do it once! I love how we all can learn new things by keeping up with each other!
We're only have a dog in a fenced in backyard, but we used to having horrible runoff problems from our neighbors. We had a French drain installed in 2022 and we get NO puddles. You may have to install drainage to your pond to help your various areas drier for your animals.
Around us those that can afford it install field tile. That's what it needs. Almost all of the 9.5 acres is this way. Field tile is expensive and an undertaking, and I'm grateful there are many ways to raise livestock. This only happens when it rains and it recedes in a couple days. But it rains often enough to not have small animals permanently out on it.
as someone who is also based in ky and raises goats (we raise feinting/myotonic goats) it is interesting to see how you prepare for freezes! we are relatively new to raising goats, this is our second winter with them, so thank you for showing what you do to help your herd!
No problem!!
You look so pretty with your hair down in a side braid. ❤❤❤
Oh thank you!!
I hope Shindy recovers quickly and that no other goats suffer from our crazy up and down temperatures!!! I know you and I discussed the expense of tiling in the fields before. Have you ever looked online to see what grants or funding might be available in your county for soil conservation or agriculture improvements? At one time, we received funding to have a pond built on our farm. Your local ASCS office my have funds to help get your fields tiled. Just a thought! Thanks for sharing your day with us!!! Stay safe!!
I should ABSOLUTELY look into that!! Thank You! I know we don't qualify for a few things because we don't have 10 acres...
The water on the ground is just the way my ground is. I have to garden above ground in containers. I have a tiny garden. But I saw that and yeah, exactly the way my ground is. Turns into a swamp.
It's a blessing and a curse!
I raised dairy goats many years. One year I tarped the kidding pen to avoid drafts. Bad idea. 3 of my babies got pneumonia. Vet treated and told me must have a lot of air exchange. Never had a problem again. I use loose housing with access to pasture 24/7. I have gravel on the floor and deep litter to have a good drainage. My pastures are all on sloped ground which helps.
That's super helpful! This is the 3rd time I've seen something like it. The barn is open to the pasture all the time and has good ventilation. Deep litter dirt floor.
Wow, so much last minute stuff done and you got a lovely batch of greens to enjoy too! The early morning pictures of the frost was beautiful, really cool to see all the plants with the crystals of ice on them and am glad you were able to capture that and share it with us. Interesting to see the shifting of the bucks around, and appreciated hearing the reasons why. Hoping Shindy does well with the treatment, and am with you it's better safe seeing the symptoms she has (plus the weather coming in) than sorry.💚 💚
Thank you!! Shindy just got her second injection and surely sounds congested!! Poor babe.
Sorry about Shindy getting sick. I hope you caught it in time and she's feeling better soon. Does the barn have a heater to keep it a bit warmer or is that not needed are the goats are acclimated to the cold? Heather, that braid looks so cute on you.
Whoa! I just checked and our temps got down to 19 last night. I'm not ready for cold and winterrrr!! I've started wearing my cuddl-duds under my jeans and two layers of tops, as well as sitting with a small space heater on my feet. Sometimes I wish I could have stayed in peri-menopause where I was always warm!
We use the barn floor as a heater. Usually we are not super cold until January and February, I Clean out the barn in November so there is a 6 week period of buildup that creates a composting type of heat on the floor for the coolest times. It works well. Buckets of water in the kidding stalls rarely freeze!
There's always way too much to do when a cold snap comes! Poor Shindy! Earlier this year one of my goats had a cold with a deep raspy cough. I tried different things which didn't work, what did was giving her oregano oil softgels everyday for a while. Hope Shindy gets better soon and no others get sick!
She is feeling much better today!! Thank you!! ♥♥
@@SageandStoneHomestead That's so good to hear.
I lost all my broccoli and cabbage.😫 We just didn't have time to get it covered and we had a drizzly rain that we weren't expecting so by the time we could mess with them they were all wet and I figured they would freeze regardless. We had to choose between that and buttoning up some things on the barn. I haven't been out to check the goats yet but I hope they did ok. I hope Shindy gets better quickly!❤
I'm sure your goats are fine! So sorry about your plants. Sometimes water helps them get through a freeze or frost believe it or not!
@@SageandStoneHomestead I'm pretty bummed but didn't really know what to do or have time to do it. Oh well.
That is okay. It happens to everyone! Some years and seasons are just really full and this freeze came earlier than I expected!
@@SageandStoneHomestead I always have a million questions but I have another one lol. I learn so much from your channel! I left a bunch of pole beans on the plants to save seed. They got huge but weren't dry yet. I pulled them before the freeze. Can I still save the seeds? Same with a cucumber I was trying to save seeds from. It's huge but hadn't turned yellow or anything.
You can always try. Dry them out and do a germination test with a damp paper towel in a plastic bag! ♥
Oh, poor little Nefarious. Doesn’t know what to make of a water puddle😊
Poor confused precious baby 🤣❤️❤️
Nefarious says “no thank you, I will not jump the puddle.”
"It's not worth it mom. I'll be fine over here all alone."
Keep us updated on Shindi. Love all the goats.
I shall!! She was munching on hay really well this evening!
Thats great
@@SageandStoneHomestead
I harvested last of spinach and kale from under a few inches of snow this week lol. Hello from Manitoba 🇨🇦 😊
Hello!! You know how to survive the cold for sure!
mind blowing y'all are getting hit before we are up here in Yankeeville. That wet sneeze activated my spidey senses too. Great work!
Thank you!!! She definitely is congested!!
It was super cold last night in ohio on trick or treating night the 31st it snowed. I was shocked i dont remember getting smow so early. Great video as always.
Someone else said they got snow in PA! They are close to the Ohio border. Brr!
Your flowers have been so beautiful!!
Thank you! This was our best flower year.
I can't wait until tomorrow because the freeze will be over for awhile. I am not ready for the cold. I have all of my fall/winter plants covered with clear totes, plastic sheeting and clear tarps so I'll be removing them tomorrow morning. But whoa I'm not ready for any cold. I'm freezing just thinking about it.
The clear containers are smart!!
@@SageandStoneHomestead I got that idea from a RUclips gardener Wayland Smalley. He gardens even in the winter by using clear containers, plastic sheeting, and cold frames with hay surrounding them.
Very cool! (or, not, haha!)
You might want to look into the pneumonia vaccine for the goats. I decided to do it this year because I’m anticipating a very up and down winter. :)
We don't vaccinate the goats here!
I LOVE the chomps grass fed beef sticks, they are soooo good. Your tea roses are big and beautiful. I like the greenhouse inside the greenhouse, that's a great idea for future reference.
Works well in spring when you have a small house and need to protect the spring seedlings from a late freeze! ❤️
I feel for your little goat. I'm just catching up since my Son and I are recovering from flu. The cold side of it hasn't been too bad aside from the cough, but the pain it caused has been brutal. I haven't forgotten about the jam recipe, I've just been in no fit state to look for it yet. Your hat is really cute!
That's fine! Get well soon, the colds and flus this year are relentless!! Hugs!
I just went through all that yesterday! ( well not the goat part as I don’t have goats 🤦♀️). Anyway…great job Heather 🤍🥰 and I love seeing your hair down! Beautiful
Thank you!! My hair has really thinned out and It's hard to figure out what to do with it. I used to wear 2 braids that were this thick. Now it's one!
It still looks very nice down but wth is happening?! Both me and my twin have been experiencing thinning & loss. We are 46 so it seems a bit premature. I noticed my daughter, who is 29, is having some loss & bald patches too. One guess of mine is it could be related to EMF's. They have increased exponentially these past few years. Our use of smart devices and wifi should be limited or non-existent imo.
I have no idea. I've heard that Covid has made some people's hair thin? I had 4 babies but my youngest is almost 6 so I'm wondering what's going on??
WOW That kept you very busy. Praying for Shindy so she gets better and I am also praying for the other goats not to get sick.
We have drastic temperature drop here as well. The day before was 35C= 95F with hot winds. This is yesterday's temp. 30C= 86F. Today is going to be 20C=68F.
Thank you so much for sharing. Love and Blessings to you all. ❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏 Doris, Penrith 🇦🇺🦘
Wow that is a serious drop in temp!! Sheesh!!
Awesome video 🥰😊
Thanks!!
I’m sure you could use taller T-posts to reset your tunnel. Would give more support and stop it from slumping over when weighted down.
Need to do it!
Beautiful braid 😊
Thank you! 😊
I love your beanie! 😊
Thank you!! I got it off Etsy last year ♥
Does your greenhouse just keep itself warm enough with the sun or do you have a heat source of some type? Really enjoy your content!
We only use the sun but could heat it slightly with the bluetti and a space heater if needed!
Maybe learn homeopathy and she won't hate you+
We know a lot about homeopathy actually, enough to know I can't keep up with plussing dosing her as often as needed with that type of treatment.
