  • A short tribute to the late Mark Foo who died at Mavericks on December 23, 1994 (aged 36)
Foo was a notable professional big wave surfer whose death at Mavericks shocked the surfing world. It had long been thought someone might die on this perilous wave, but not someone of Foo's stature.
He once famously said "If you want to ride the ultimate wave, you have to be willing to pay the ultimate price"
This video features some rare footage of Mark surfing in his native Hawaii at the famous Waimea Bay, as well as his final moment in Half Moon Bay in Northern California upon the infamous wave of Mavericks that took his life.
The gentle instrumental surf track in the video is "Beyond the Surf" by the Tandems.
Mark Sheldon Foo (February 5, 1958 -- December 23, 1994) Rest in peace.

Mark Foo was ahead of his time. He was one of the first to chase swells around the globe when he could afford it. He worked hard to cultivate friendships with photographers so he could get his photos on the cover or in the magazines. His ego was out of control but he came from Chinese royalty and an over-achieving family so that's understandable. His father was a Washington diplomat and one of his relatives was the first Oriental to become a licensed doctor in the United States. Mark taught me about all the secret spots on Oahu. He loved living on an island because as long as he could drive he could find offshore waves. He didn't always try to promote himself. He was the most stoked on a day where he surfed an out of the way break and got a big barrel with no one watching. Other surfers didn't like the way he tried to get everyone's attention. He even had a television show near the end of his career. Now, decades later, he's largely forgotten. Just like Johnny Rotten. Mark was a good surfer, but he didn't have the skills, that say, his Sunset Beach surfing partner, Bobby Owens, did. But he left an indelible mark on the sport. His article in surfing magazine about surviving a 100 foot left that broke on him at Waimea Bay should stand the test of time. I met some incredible people in my surfing life, like Rick Griffin and Ron Stoner, two important artists that captured surfing at its finest. I feel lucky that I spent so much time surfing instead of slaving away all the time like my father did.
