I bought a brand new Greg Noll 9'4" square tail, three stringers, square. blue glass fin. 1962. In the trunk it stuck out a mile behind my Dad's 57 Ford Fairlane on the way home. But he did put a red rag on the end. I was proud as hell.

Mark Foo was ahead of his time. He was one of the first to chase swells around the globe when he could afford it. He worked hard to cultivate friendships with photographers so he could get his photos on the cover or in the magazines. His ego was out of control but he came from Chinese royalty and an over-achieving family so that's understandable. His father was a Washington diplomat and one of his relatives was the first Oriental to become a licensed doctor in the United States. Mark taught me about all the secret spots on Oahu. He loved living on an island because as long as he could drive he could find offshore waves. He didn't always try to promote himself. He was the most stoked on a day where he surfed an out of the way break and got a big barrel with no one watching. Other surfers didn't like the way he tried to get everyone's attention. He even had a television show near the end of his career. Now, decades later, he's largely forgotten. Just like Johnny Rotten. Mark was a good surfer, but he didn't have the skills, that say, his Sunset Beach surfing partner, Bobby Owens, did. But he left an indelible mark on the sport. His article in surfing magazine about surviving a 100 foot left that broke on him at Waimea Bay should stand the test of time. I met some incredible people in my surfing life, like Rick Griffin and Ron Stoner, two important artists that captured surfing at its finest. I feel lucky that I spent so much time surfing instead of slaving away all the time like my father did.

My final memory of DW came on 7/3/83, in St. Louis Mo., on a sweltering hot summer day, as The Boys played before 75,000 in St. Louis Busch Stadium. When he walked out, I did NOT recognize him. It had been almost a year since I'd last seen him, on Labor Day, 1982, [9/4] in Colorado, at Red Rocks . ----The difference was dramatic, & heartbreaking.
