depends on the turbo upgrade if its just a moderate boost standard will be fine as long a you dont flog it hard if its heavy boost or a moderate boost + more fuel its well worth the piston upgrade. its normally the more fuel part that catches people off guard even with upgraded pistons some people think its ok to just dump more fuel and end up blowing there engines.

Would be a real shame to have to pull the whole engine back out prematurely, to replace a rusted / corroded leaking original plug?

Because of video editing, you dont see what con rods are fitted to the new pistons?
New rods, original rods? 1HD-T (FT/FTE) Rods?
    Why does that matter?
The MAJOR difference between the Factory Turbo Motors from Toyota & the stock standard 1HZ is the Con Rods!
The turbo motor, 1HD-T / FT & FTE, & the 1HZ difference - is that the turbo motors have con rods with a special oil gallery that the 1HZ’s DONT have.
The Oil Gallery runs all the way up through the con rod to the top where the con rod wraps around the gudgeon pin that connects the piston.
This gallery continues out the top of the con rod in what is called an oil squirter nozzle.
Oil squirts out of the top of the con rod upwards onto the underside of the piston crown.
The standard 1HZ’s DONT have this oil squirter feature to squirt oil under the piston crown.
What is the purpose of the oil squirter con rod on the factory turbo HD/FT &FTE motors?
That oil wicks heat of combustion on top of the piston, away into the sump, where the oil gets pumped out to an oil cooler & the excess heat is shed back to the atmosphere.
The turbo motors, produce a heap more heat on top of the piston crown than the naturally aspirated 1HZ and it’s the job of the oil squirters to wick that heat away into the sump oil to cool it through the oil cooler before the aluminium in the piston crown starts to first distort, then melt!
When you turbo a standard 1HZ and you don’t put 1HD-T / FT or FTE con rods with oil squirters in, you don’t get this under piston crown cooling.
The heat of combustion under high boost pressures from a turbo under load can exceed 650Degrees C which is the point at which the alloy in the piston crown starts to “creep” then deform just prior to melting.
This is why turbo motors you run EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) gauges to monitor the temperatures in the combustion chamber.
If you rebuild a 1HZ without adding oil squirter con rods from a 1HD-T / FT or FTE, then you run the risk of melting pistons with high boost numbers once you get under load on a long uphill run with a load on.
You need that oil under the piston crown, to wick away that excessive temps to prevent piston damage from excess heat.
It’s NOT just as simple as bolting a turbo onto a 1HZ, they just don’t last like the factory turbo 1HD-T/FT & FTE’s that have the oil squirters.
Seemingly the first thing many tyros do the moment they bolt a C26 turbo kit on their 1HZ is put it in to be tuned on a dyno & go for Max boost (40 pounds) to try and increase the fuel input to match and get Max HP.
And for a short while it works, but it doesn’t last!
The 1HZs were never designed or built to run turbo boost pressures and temps.
Without oil squirter rods, oil cooler & a intercooler to keep temps down inside the combustion chamber, you will just destroy a 1HZ by adding a turbo.
    My 2C

You can get a adapter or make an adapter to fit a turbo also, apparently they are surposed to flow just as good as a genuine turbo manifold.. the adapters are available on eBay and it's just a piece of plate with holes to bolt to the stock manifold with bugle head bolts and studs to bolt the turbo on.. they are a couple of hundred bucks but cheaper than a new manifold but I'm cheap and will make my own and make it thicker to have room for a egt sensor fitted into the side of the adapter plate to get before turbo egt..

New head, oil pump, alternator, 3inch exhaust from dump pipe back. All up around $8500.. Had the fuel pump rebuilt 2yrs ago so add another $2000. Also replaced the clutch for a heavy duty and an exchange gearbox from 360 gearboxes in Melbourne, it’s an upgrade box for towing. This is in a 105 cruiser. I’m comfortable with the spend as we own the vehicle which is set up for touring and to replace would have been out of our budget.
