    I bought a leadscrew from kingston Engineering in England. They were very pleasant to do business with.

    Hello Jan. in this video you are seen adjusting a screw which is attached to the lower half nut. (5 min 18 sec). I understand that this is used to control the depth of engagement of the half nut with the leadscrew. However, what is the optimum depth of engagement and how is that determined????
    Happy new year to you. Andrew

      Thnks, happy new year to you too! I cannot see that there is an actual specification for what I assume you can refer to as the backlash in the leadscrew/half-nut system, but the value for backlash given in the spec sheet for the cross- and compound slide screw/nut is 0.004", so I guess we cannot be that far away if we use this for the longitudenal feed as well. However, I would say that the optimum value is where you have minimum play but are still able to move the saddle freely

      @@jansverrehaugjord9934 Thank you Jan. I’m not sure if we were speaking about the same item. It’s LA6 on the Apron Assembly (diagram LA). Since asking my question I have found on page 30 (Super 7 Lathe Operation and Maintenance Manual) a paragraph headed Apron which says:
      “The 2BA x 13/4” cap head screw ( parts list LA6) must be so adjusted that the leadscrew nut will not close sufficiently to cause it to bind on the leadscrew.”
      I therefore assume that the screw pushes apart the two halves of the leadscrew half nut sufficiently to stop the binding. A case of trial and error.

      @@andrewdolinskiatcarpathian Sorry, forgot to mention the stop screw. You are of course right, this is how you adjust the play. I thought you meant what the actual desired value for this was.

      @@jansverrehaugjord9934 Thank you. I now understand your original reply. I will experiment with my stop screw.
      I just bought a quick change gearbox and will be fitting it. I suspect that the stop screw will need to be adjusted once I fit the gearbox.

      @@andrewdolinskiatcarpathian That is possible, depending on the condition of the leadscrew. Normally, as the leadscrew and nut wears, you will have more play. The idea is that you loosen the stop screw to allow you to close the half nuts a small amount so that the nut fits better ie. with less play

    Looking forward to watching this post! I left a long comment on your last video with some setup questions. If you have any answers that’d be great. I’m sure this will be helpful info as well. 👍

    Hi Jan, love your videos. Are you familiar with the ml10 ? im wanting to make a new leadscrew for it but cant find any information on it.

    • @jansverrehaugjord9934
      @jansverrehaugjord9934  4 года назад

      Thnks. yes, I know the ML10. You can get parts for this lathe from Myford, but I cannot see the leadscrew advertized. However, mine is the same as for the ML7, just shorter. Hence you might buy this and just shorten it. There may also be better used examples available on Ebay.co.uk? Or buy a suitable length of ACME threaded rod and make. If I remember correctly, it is 3/4" diameter, 8 TPI left-handed

      @@drehmaschineklein6626 Having looked into this a bit further I see that the new "automatically add subtitles" possibility with RUclips suggests to use a 3rd party software to make this happen. I am now using Camtasia for my video projects both for these "hobby" videos as well as at work as part of making electronic manuals, so will see if they have a function to interpret the speech and make subtitles out of this. If not, then we are back to making subtitles/captions by writing them, which is a lot of work. These machining videos are purely non-profit and made primarily for (other) amateur machinists like myself to help understand or look at a particular machine, describing a technique in the renovation process, how I solve certain issues etc. I sometimes have time to take the effort while editing.. other times not really "feel like it" :) Anyway, maybe I can help you if there is a specific question you have about what is documented in the video? Just write in Spanish or German if either suits you, then I can translate. We can also communicate on email or eg. Messenger or WhatsApp.
