An honest review of a great place. Food looks mouth-watering. Wales is a beautiful and so are the Welsh. I am not British but was welcome everywhere I went: In Cardiff, to the far west, to the north, everywhere I went. Now back in Singapore, but I hope to bring my family there one day for a lovely holiday! Bore da!!
Hi Gary, my wife and I had a weekend break here after seeing your review. The restaurant was perfect and the views over the fields were amazing. You do an amazing job, and we now try to visit restaurants you've reviewed. I've been to Andy's twice, and you are right, it's a 10* family restaurant serving amazing food. Keep up the great work!!
I think it was nice you called out the chef and complimented him on his work. So many people are quick to complain but never give anybody a pat on the back for a good experience. Well done Mate 👍
Wow , serendipity on steroids . Pukkah food , without all the ridiculous decorations , and embellishment . My kinda food , . Honest and unfettered . Gary’s enthusiasm for the whole package was so apparent . The reviews are a master class for food critics . Thank you Gary .
Well Gary, imagine my surprise when I see you visiting my home town !! I lived three miles up the valley from Llangynwyd, the correct named location of The Old House. I had my 18th birthday meal in the Corner House, which is the second of the only two pub/restaurants in what is known locally as, Top LLan. The Old House has changed so much. It was just a little pub, with dining but it looks so different. I moved from Maesteg about 30 years ago and have visited there a few times since and I tell you what, that valley is as beautiful now as I remember it. I was so lucky to grow up in a place with such incredible surroundings. The food looked lovely, but then, it is good home- made Welsh cooking !. So glad you enjoyed it all and it was an extra special nostalgic treat for me to watch. You certainly chose well. Diolch yn Fawr.(Thanks a lot)
Gary, you honestly are such a pleasant and cozy host. Christmas time here, and difficult for me (first without mum, Dad's been gone nearly 14 years now) but enjoying a meal with you feels like home. Thank you.
The fact that you have so many comments less than an hour after posting the video speaks volumes about how popular you are Gary , the rapidly increasing number of fans are eagerly awaiting to watch and enjoy every new blog , great review as usual best wishes to you and your boy the cameraman 👍
Must say you're a bit of my new RUclips hero after hearing your story. Keep making these wonderful videos. I really enjoy and appreciate what you and your cameraman/son do.
That pub and the scenery were amazing, and you had great weather to shine on some amazing looking food. This pub is so lucky to have a team that offers great food with the best ingredients 🤗
Superb value here. And it's good to see everything is made in-house. I've been to far too many restaurants who can't even be bothered to make their own battered onion rings. Fantastic channel, Gary. Thank you!
What a find Gary . Was this restaurant sugguested by someone? WE have been to Wales and found the food unappealing. The surroundings around this restaurant are breathtaking. Harriet and I have to take another look. Great video ! Always a class act. All the best mate 👍👍 Jim and Harriet
I've been watching your channel for a while now and just realised I wasn't subscribed. I am now! I've never even been to the UK and will probably never visit these restaurants but I really enjoy the reviews. You're so genuine, polite and fair, and I love the no no nonsense approach.
Your description.....I was eating every bite with you! lol What a bargain for £18.50, gorgeous views, service and apparently brilliant quality food! No surprise it was one of your favourites
I live about 4 miles away from the old house, and have had many a meal there over the last 50yrs or so, but haven't been there since the take over and refurbishment. Looks really nice, but a little too nice for me. We like the "OLD" bit in the name, as it used to have amazing ambiance and you felt like a person that mattered to the staff, and everything was a bit more personal. Of course, luckily nothing lasts forever, otherwise we would still be living in caves. LOL. Great review by the way, and thanks for the 10 /10 for our lovely area. I am so lucky to have a better view than that from my front patio.
I went to Wales to see The Stereophonics live at the millennium centre, one of the best days of my life. We stayed in a town called Barry for 2 days and it was such a beautiful country.
I love your enthusiasm Gary when a meal like this gets to the point of no words to describe for most of us ,but you always find the right words to express the meal in front of you ,enough that it makes me want to join you lol another great review 😊
Love these wales videos. So many food vloggers somehow miss wales out. I love my country, I’m glad you enjoyed the food and our beautiful countryside! 🏴
I've never taken any notice of reviewers and critics, whether it be for theatre, cinema, music or whatever. It's just the view of one person. What is meat to one is poison to another. Then, I came across this gentleman. Telling us all how it really is. So much so, I visited one of the establishments that Gary, recommended. The review was spot on. Well done sir. Honesty without presentation. Most refreshing.
Recently discovered your videos Gary, and I have to say, I cannot stop watching. You seem to be gathering quite a following and I can see why. Honest, enjoyable reviews with total integrity. Bravo sir.
Oh wow! I don't live far from Maesteg and I never thought I'd see it featured on RUclips. Wales is often forgotten about online 😂 I haven't been to Old House and didn't know it existed. But it's such a beautiful pub, I will have to make a trip.
How could you go wrong? Outdoors, bathed in great and glorious sunshine, green fields and great vistas covered in daisies and dandelions, and a gorgeous slice of Welsh Lamb. Jealous doesn't describe it! Felt every bite, again, jealously, love it!
Hey Gary, your head must be swelling with all the lovely comments made. I think the folks have forgotten it's a good critic channel, so thinking bout food (just for a change,) it looks really quite fine😉
Hi Gary and Mr Cameraman Well the views alone here were a 10 for me, what a great place. I can't believe the value of the meal that was outstanding, and the food was amazing. You fell on your feet here Gary. Chris.
Gary we stayed at this hotel for a weekend following your review OMG the best weekend the best staff and you missed the Sunday roast which was the best I’ve ever eaten so thank YOU for a lovely weekend xxxxx
Wales ❤ absolutely breathtaking location and pub. Made up for you both that the weather was lovely. Thank you for taking us along Gary, not been here, yet... Ps According to my Welsh - Scouse 92 year old mum. Welsh lamb isn't what it used to be. Rest assured I will let her know. 👌
I know Welsh hill farmers that produce lamb and it is still every bit as good. Have look at this really beautiful short film. It's about a such a person. ruclips.net/video/qNl7qmKIEAs/видео.html
Thought you were going to do a survey when the clip board came out. Fantastic views at the end. "Far a way a voice is calling...." The team from Wales will know.
The Old House definitely ticked all the boxes by the looks of it and deserved the 10 star rating. The surprising thing for me Gary was you were speechless now is that a first on your channel? 😂😂😂😂
Back to the Valleys on December 16th and getting back to running the roads in winter. Nothing toughens you up like a bit of Joe Calzaghe training in the rain and snow in the beacons, and the valleys in general. Sooo many really good pub grubs around that are not on the map. Bronllys town is superb Gary so much to choose from, of course, a summer's day helps, but keep Bronllys on your map for next summer Gary. It's just a few clicks down the road from where the RAF train, our military and the such. Beautiful is an overused word but not for there.
Thanks Gary for the recommendation we from south Wales but didn't know about it. We had lunch there today and enjoyed it and the staff said how nice you both were.
The Skirrid inn in Monmouthshire, Wales, at over 900 years old, The Skirrid Inn is Wales’ oldest pub and truly one of a kind. An old Court House where they used to hang people in there and is haunted. Has ghost hunts, accommodation, and wonderful food. Nice video, thanks.
I have mint gravy on lots of things , lamb, beef , I even put mint in chicken gravy , I might be weird but who made the ‘ rule’ it’s only to be had with lamb lol
Hi Gary, I’m an Aussie that loves your work. I have a Welsh mate, born in Port Talbot, that has been a resident of my town (Margaret River) for longer than he has lived in Wales. He came here for the surf, and we couldn’t get rid of the bugger. He loves it here, but he and his wife (she’s a Pom, but she’s lovely) try to get home to visit family as they can. He has been umming and ahhring about going for a visit, as none of us are getting any younger. But I reckon your video might just tip him in the right direction. Bless you!🙏🙏
Thank you for watching all the way from Australia Tim, I can understand completely why you’re friend would want to return as it’s a beautiful part of the world 🏴🏴🇦🇺🇦🇺
As a local of the area, I’d like to add to this review with a little insight of the community. The Old House (which has a claim to being one of the oldest pubs in all of the UK, not just Wales, but I believe is pipped to the post slightly), was very much a communal pub in the village. The food on offer was the comforting sort, home-cooking and large portions, as well as being particularly cheap. It wasn’t gourmet, but it was always tasty and filling. The Llynfi Valley, also happens to contain some of the most impoverished parts of the UK, and has very few restaurants on offer. Most of the eateries consist of pubs, cafés, and kebab shops. The Old House (and its’ neighbour, the Corner House) was somewhere the family would go quite regularly. In the last ten years, the family that owned the pub sold it on to someone new, who came along and revitalised the premises. They did away with some of the more traditional fare, in favour of restaurant quality menus, and added on to the building. Whereas the business used to operate as a local pub that also served meals, it went on to become a restaurant that also serves alcohol. For many, it’s become seen as pretentious, too expensive (especially for the “small” portion sizes). Given that it’s an area with little of money, a lot of people prioritise quantity over quality. These aren’t opinions that I share. I think the new owner(s) have done a fabulous job of bringing an à la carte menu to the venue, while maintaining a strong Welsh tradition, and not out-pricing local people. The portion sizes are more than reasonable for the price point as well, and the staff are incredible. I always recommend that the naysayers go up during the lunchtime offering so they can sample it and see how good it really is. A lot of people like to try and put others off. They’ve done amazing things to really emphasise the gorgeous scenery the valley has to offer. 10/10 establishment on our doorstep.
Well said... I'm a fellow local (born not living) and recently visited. It's about time we had a place like this serving good quality fare. Hardly anyone from the top of the Valley would visit but I'm seeing lots of people move into Maesteg due to house prices... I predict more gentrification over the coming decades...
Well done Gary its great when you go to visit these local eatery's and show all of us what's available still in the country, support your local business.
Brilliant review and your spot on, the food is stunning. If you ever get back, try the sticky rib starter & you won't be disappointed. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable as well, I'm laying in bed in one of the garden rooms while writing this. Thanks again for the review, much appreciated 👍👍.
You know what..... If the USA had our kind of history we would never hear the end of it. Lets be proud of our great Heritage, History, Inns & Gary's. Another great looking pub you have visited to chalk on our to visit list. Thanks!
Hi Gary just witched the old House pub in Maesteg. Wow haven't been there in years. We only live 20 mins away in Bridgend. Already booked a table . Well done Gary you have done it again Glad you enjoyed our wonderful country.
Thanks for the review Gary that meal looked amazing especially the Lamb. It’s been years since we last visited Wales but we might have to give it a try when we are back in the UK.
An actual food review vlogger who trys food that I want to eat and mixes it up a bit, rather than eating constant burgers, English breakfasts and fish and chips like the other channels do... Keep up the good work!
Glad you had a good time in my homeland. Never been to that place but always keen for a good meal. There will be a welcome in the valleys for Gary. Peace dude ✌️
Leeks and bacon ! lovely, like cabbage and bacon or sprouts an..........Stunning looking place. Mint sauce on the side for me, my god that dessert looked a picture...cheers.
What a hidden gem of a place fantastic. When you think what other channels pay for fast food tosh this is awesome value. The care and attention to detail service etc brilliant 😋😋😋😋😋😋
Our favourite local💕 we absolutely love it! Definitely a must 👌 we have also stayed new years eve at one if the beautiful rooms! Proud to call it our local 🥰
Wow. What a stunning place. How could you not give that a 10*. The portion size was certainly good and it all looked amazing. Maybe one day I'll get to visit there. 😀
I found this video very helpful in understanding the 4 P rule in Marketing: "Product, price, place, and promotion". The Place is historic, peaceful and picturesque, the food of high quality and savoury, the promotion done cascade like (main menu, set menu and Sunday lunch) which allows people of varied income levels to receive an offer and come to visit the old pub, which leads to the fourth of the ps: the pricing. Very enjoyable episode. Thank you Gary.
I totally agree Gary its an obvious 10/10 and i have been nearby to Neath before.... tempting to stay their for more time in such a great old pub- excellent choice, weather, location and pub Excellent!😊😅😂

I don’t know how people still rubbish British food when absolute gems like this place exist. I’m definitely making a special journey to that pub.
I agree with you completely Paul 💯💯🏴🏴
Absolutely agree with you Paul! unfortunately thought it is because the majority of tourists to the UK just visit London :(
There is nothing at all wrong with British food ... I think it's Superb ... Who can beat a Full on Sunday Roast
I would say Britain is the best in world for pub food, other types of cuisine not so much.
Nothing to do with london. Theres great places in london. Its because people are ignorant@_Cheer_Bear
You're a gent, Gary. The way you spoke about your son in the Q&A has touched us all. He's lucky to have you as a Dad. New favourite channel on RUclips!

The team from Wales will know.
lol it did look look like that Keith 😂
The Old House definitely ticked all the boxes by the looks of it and deserved the 10 star rating. The surprising thing for me Gary was you were speechless now is that a first on your channel? 😂😂😂😂
I've been here and the food was top, the location is stunning
It actually was 😳😂
😂😂😂
Back to the Valleys on December 16th and getting back to running the roads in winter. Nothing toughens you up like a bit of Joe Calzaghe training in the rain and snow in the beacons, and the valleys in general. Sooo many really good pub grubs around that are not on the map. Bronllys town is superb Gary so much to choose from, of course, a summer's day helps, but keep Bronllys on your map for next summer Gary. It's just a few clicks down the road from where the RAF train, our military and the such. Beautiful is an overused word but not for there.
Thank you very much for the info Jason
Thanks Gary for the recommendation we from south Wales but didn't know about it. We had lunch there today and enjoyed it and the staff said how nice you both were.
Wow that’s fantastic and the staff were lovely 👌👌👌👌
The Skirrid inn in Monmouthshire, Wales, at over 900 years old, The Skirrid Inn is Wales’ oldest pub and truly one of a kind.
An old Court House where they used to hang people in there and is haunted. Has ghost hunts, accommodation, and wonderful food. Nice video, thanks.
Thank you very much for the information. It’s really appreciated.
I cannot recall the last time I had mint gravy. Now I know what I'll be making for dinner. Yum.
Please do enjoy it
I have mint gravy on lots of things , lamb, beef , I even put mint in chicken gravy , I might be weird but who made the ‘ rule’ it’s only to be had with lamb lol
Bless you!🙏🙏
Thank you for watching all the way from Australia Tim, I can understand completely why you’re friend would want to return as it’s a beautiful part of the world 🏴🏴🇦🇺🇦🇺
Unbelievable premises. Wow! With food to match.
This was wonderful
Another really good review. Well done and thank you!
Thank you very much, Sarah 🌹
There's lovely!

I think you are spot on, a great comment
Well done Gary its great when you go to visit these local eatery's and show all of us what's available still in the country, support your local business.
It is better to support local businesses. They never let me down.

I really hope you have a fantastic visit, Wayne. Please let me know how it goes.

Thank you very much, this was excellent
An actual food review vlogger who trys food that I want to eat and mixes it up a bit, rather than eating constant burgers, English breakfasts and fish and chips like the other channels do... Keep up the good work!
Thank you David. I do try to mix it up
We're the first!!! Just for info, we're eating in york (forest) because of you! Thanks!!!
Have fun! Let me know how it goes Simon
Smiles and chuckles. Fresh and new, yet heart-warming and familiar.

It’s a beautiful place
Love your channel
That’s very kind to say, thank you very much 🏴
Wow. What a stunning place. How could you not give that a 10*. The portion size was certainly good and it all looked amazing. Maybe one day I'll get to visit there. 😀
If you visit you won’t be disappointed
I found this video very helpful in understanding the 4 P rule in Marketing: "Product, price, place, and promotion". The Place is historic, peaceful and picturesque, the food of high quality and savoury, the promotion done cascade like (main menu, set menu and Sunday lunch) which allows people of varied income levels to receive an offer and come to visit the old pub, which leads to the fourth of the ps: the pricing. Very enjoyable episode. Thank you Gary.
Thank you very much for your lovely comment. It’s really appreciate.
Hearty, honest food, thanks for sharing the experience👍

No question, 10/10 as soon as that landed on your table, Gary. Sprouting brocolli is one of my favourite veggies, I prefer it to asparagus.
This was simply outstanding and excellent value
