Hi Mike - It is always a good idea to clean the wheels with a strong solvent cleaner such as the Prep Wipes or Prep Spray prior to applying a primer. Doing so will remove the oils from your hands, dust floating in the air that landed on the surface, or any other type of contaminant that may have gotten on the surface of the substrate after it was sandblasted.

The Wheel Coating Clear can be applied during the normal recoat times (before 1 hour or after 5 days) set forth on the label. If you’re unable to recoat during that time, then you should wait 5 days.
We would suggest a couple of light coats, then 1 medium coat of Clear over the paint. Heavy application of an alkyd-based Clear could result is a slight amber tone.

@PARABOLOUS you need to make sure you scuff before painting with a 3M Scotch Bright pad and then follow that with our Prep Spray. The scuffing and prep spray will help the wheel coating bond with the wheel.

Hi Mike - Rims should be removed, cleaned well using Grease and Wax Remover, sanded to dull the finish. Once sanded, clean again and allow to dry.
Once dry, you can apply the Wheel paint, following the label instructions. It’s best to allow the paint to cure for 5 days. Good luck - and be sure to share your finished product with us! We'd love to see!

    Hello Beno!
Although we would recommend using our Wheel Coating over CS101 -- Automotive Metallic would be a fine application on wheels, as long as you clean with Prep Spray, use Adhesion Promoter, and consider using a clear coat. :)

Sanding will help, but cleaning with our Grease and Wax Remover will remove contamination from the surface, which is important to any paint application... hope this helps... thank you..

Definitely use our Wheel Coating, as it is specially formulated for wheel application. We wouldn't recommend Paint Shop for application on wheels

The High Performance Wheel Coating completely cures 7 days after its final application. After 7 days the product will achieve it’s maximum hardness therefore one should wait 7 days prior to installing and driving with the freshly applied coating.

I used the prep wipes as suggested and they were a definite necessity to remove all the excess dust. 2 coats of primer, 2 coats of color, & 2 coats of clear. The wheels turned out pretty nice. I see the cure time is 7 days. Is there anything keeping me from putting the wheels on and driving on them after 24 hours? Obviously I would wait the 7 days before washing or waxing them.

@jaxsurfken12 Sounds like a couple of things, Did you paint in the direct sun or on a humid day and how far did you hold the can from the wheel when spraying? All will lead to a dusy type effect as the paint is literally drying before it hits the wheel. Rescuff and shoot primer where needed. Spray in the shade on a day that his relatively low humidity.

This particular wheel coating will work even without the use of primer or adhesive promoter?

would sanding the rim and cleaning it with alcohol allow the paint to stick longer? thanks!

I am having my aluminum alloy wheels sandblasted, do I still need to use PW100 prep wipe or PS100 prep spray? I plan to use 2-3 coats of DAP1690 self etching primer followed by 2-3 coats of HWP102 graphite finishing with 2-3 coats of HWP103 clear.

    Hello,
Quick question, is it ok to use Duplicolor Automotive Metallic CS101 (Chorme) on wheels?
I know it's more for trimmings, but wheels don't get as hot as brake calipers, so I was wondering if there would be any problems using it.
